Guides were great but there was a problem… Matthew and Henry were amazing guides on the volcano boarding. They made us feel very safe. 5 stars for them and the overall tour. Several local guys came along to help carry boards if we desired and I was disappointed to be told that without anyone taking them up on their offer (as was the case in our group), they don’t earn any money and it’s up to us to offer some money if we’re able. If that’s true, it is confusing for several reasons. 1) These men were definitely working and helping. Without them, the work for Henry and Matthew would have been a lot and might have detracted from their ability to do the amazing job they did. 2) The boards and clothing were stored where we picked the local guys up and it seemed like they were responsible for the gear. So either they are being taken advantage of or they are in fact being paid something. 3) Lastly, $35x7(in our group) is a lot of money in Nicaragua and I find it greedy that some of that money can’t make it to them considering points 1 & 2. I respect the company for helping locals get the chance to earn money for their families from tourists. I do not respect it being up to us to pay their wage when they clearly played a role in the comfort and logistics of the tour. Maybe I’m missing a piece of information here. However, these are my feelings based on the information I have.

I signed up for the volcano boarding and it did not disappoint! $35 for the tour not including the $10 entrance fee to the park. Bring an extra $5 if you do not want to carry your board up the volcano - it’s a bit awkward and can be heavy. Great vibes on the bus and while hiking! Would definitely recommend! Come ready for a chicken bus rave at the end! Did this tour with my mom and she raves about it! Mom approved!

Honestly the best hostel in Leon. Conmen area are nice but pretty hot, maybe a fan or two would do the work. The pool is nice, there is a restaurant as well which is nice and not that pricy. They helped me a lot with a shuttle to Guatemala, I booked with them the volcano tour which was amazing, you get a shirt, the guide was nice and fun, and also it turn into a party, lots of fun and alcohol. All this good cost me 35$ and you get a free night if you book with them the volcano!! (What?! Yes!!!) Thanks Bigfoot ❤️

The volcano boarding was NOT what they promised! They promised “breakfast cooked on the volcano” which we didn’t get. They promised “drinks and fruit snacks” on the volcano which we never got. They promised lunch when we got back which we never received. They promised a “RADAR-gun” to measure speed, but it was just the guy roughly estimating based on his smartphone. They promised “a lot of photos” and there wasn’t even a single photo of my wife going down the volcano! Not one! The guide was nice, but we paid 30 dollars per person because we were promised all these things which we never got. And when we told them and showed them their own website, we didn’t get anything even though we had paid for it. So, if you want to do a tour, just know that it doesn’t include everything they say it includes.

Bigfoot Hostel is a MUST visit in Nicaragua! The rooms are super clean and comfy and the place is run amazing by Nunu! The manager! She is an active problem solver that will make everything you need happen, always with a smile. Big shout out to Corbin, one of the volunteers who does the volcano boarding! (Once in a lifetime experience, you can not miss it) Who was very patient and kind with me during the hike. He never left me alone and walked side by side with me! Thank you so much Corbin you were great! Bigfoot Hostel knows how to party but also rocks at Customer Service!! Thank you for a great time again guys!

We did the volcano boarding with big foot and it was unreal. Great staff on board the chicken bus, take the time with hike and explain how to properly volcano board. Lester was great host, making the bus fun and volcano boarding safe with a lot of history. The dinner with the local family was delicious and great fun to see some local kids. Back on the bus to finish the party was unreal.

The sunset volcano boarding experience with Bigfoot hostel was a fantastic experience! They were so accommodating and the dinner with the Nicaraguan family was such a special treat. The hike itself was manageable for anyone in reasonable shape. I will say we were the only family on the tour (it is a hostel after all, mostly single backpackers of a great variety of nationalities). Overall it was one of favorite excursions of our time in Nicaragua.

Volcano boarding was an awesome experience! Full day of adventure fun. Good vibes & positive energy. The weather threatened us but we prevailed. Our guides made the experience better being ready to turn up but also giving us proper guidance to keep us safe. There was food, drinks, and music the entire time. Our group was large & that made the experience that much better. I would do this tour every time I’m in Nicaragua. Highly recommend.

We had book a volcano boarding tour with this hostel but didn't stay for any night. The tour is really great. The guide gave great explanation about the volcano, the region and how to ride your board. On the way back to the city, we had quite a party. The bus looks like a disco. Really a nice experience.

The hostel has a great backpacker vibe and all the staff are so helpful. We did the volcano boarding tour and our guide was great. We loved the bar and the social spaces too. I highly recommend to do the boarding here, where we got a free night!

Volcano hostel was quiet so if you need a rest from traveling, this is the perfect place..We had a private room with bathroom.. The room was small but clean and the bed was comfortable. And the dog was the cuteness.A small shop which had most of the things you would need.. Overall a good place to stay.. I would recommend it..

Didn’t stay at the hostel but if you’re going to do the volcano boarding 100% do it with them!! It was one of the best experiences I had we did it with Gerard I believe and it was an unforgettable experience. The price included the volcano boarding drinks, snacks, marshmallows, and dinner. Really great!

This is probably the most unorganized hostel I’ve stayed in. Lack of management. First the check in was 2 hours delayed, without any notice. Then we finally got our beds. The bed I was supposed to have was occupied. A the next one didn’t have a locker connected, because someone had taken it.? The room looked super messy. Then we got moved to another room which smells of chemicals that give you a bad headache. The new bed had multiple stains on the the linen. they changed it as they should, when I told them., but it doesn’t feel like anybody is in control. I would come for a cheap drink, but save the night for a more organized place

  • 2/5 Andrew W. 2 years ago on Google
pretty average hostel thats main selling point is its price. I mean, for $6 a night, you really can’t complain and honestly if you are really looking to save some money and enjoy a nice party atmosphere (I actually thought the atmosphere was a perfect blend of party and chill because I only took one night to sleep. That being said the dorms are rough — stuffy, dark, hot as a sauna and like a tomb. The wire cage on my bed forming my locker was torn and tattered and in the night when I was getting out of bed I scraped myself on a rusty spike which was not fun. Luckily I have my tetanus vaccine haha. Also the fan / ventilator has no cover and when I reached out to grab my water my hand got clipped by the spinning blades and then was bleeding All that said its a budget hostel and if you’re looking to save a buck and will be drunk enough to sleep through the sauna dorms you could do it. I would recommend spending a few more dollars and going to ViaVia across the street. Also, the volcano boarding is cool and an experience, but its basically like sledding down a hill at low speed. Glad I did it but it was pretty overhyped

I did the way with my friend from Leon to Antigua with them, and I'm very happy with the service. In time front of our hostel, the first shuttle from Nica to Honduras was not that confortable 😅 but I need to say that the first driver (who came back to his family in Honduras on the way) was a truly angel, and took care of us like we were his kids! I want to thank him again! And then, when we changed, the shuttle was very much better and the guy drived a bit crazy... But what a long drive... So yeah, go with them! They are nice!!

Amazing time! The hostel is clean, and provide a lot of activities to be able to meet other travellers. The restaurant next door is also very good with cheap prices. I would highly recommend for anyone looking for a party hostel in Leon!

We did not stay here but we joined in with the pub crawl on a Saturday and I have to leave a 5 star review as it was great! Its a good way to meet people and very well organised. Jason from Bigfoot is lovely, and it’s also really good value as you get your first drink free in most of the places, definitely recommend.

Great place! We stayed in a private room. No wifi in the rooms but it worked in the common area. It's a very clean hostel, all the staff is really nice. The Volcano boarding was amazing!

The staff is amazing and very helpful. lot's of options for activities organized by the hostel. Good location. Volcano boarding was an amazing experience. Loved it. The only problem is that the citchen is not functioning and without equipment.

Volcano boarding with Bigfoot was an overall good experience! Well organised trip, friendly tour guide and clear instructions. After your slide down you’ll get some watermelon and a beer, which hit the spot. Also if you book the morning trip they offer a free night (dorm) that day (if there is capacity). Overall nothing to complain about: 5 stars Note: payment only in cash Our stay in the hostel was just ok. Loud music until late is what we already expected, so will not complain about that. Dorms are also ok. Con’s: The real downside is their is not really a kitchen Pro’s: Pool is nice though, and they have free drinking water. Also the pub crawl was amazing: shoutout to the volunteers that made it happen! Overall would recommend to do the volcano boarding here, and just join the pub crawl!

I had a great time at Bigfoot. Their volcano boarding was dope and beer pong nights are legendary. Definitely the best place to stay in Leon if you're looking for an affordable and fun backpacker hostel

  • 3/5 Abbie J. 2 years ago on Google
We did the sunset volcano boarding. The event itself is fun and includes a lot for the price. Vibes were good but be warned for solo female backpackers / any females - the male guides were very hands on and tactile once they had alcohol and seemed to purposely be pouring it down girls throats to take advantage of them. Besides that, the actual volcano boarding is fun.

If you come to Leon you must go volcano boarding and you must stay at Bigfoot! Super fun bar, great people from all over, decent rooms w good lockers and great location. Not to mention how epic the volcano boarding was! Had a great time here, made some amazing memories and some awesome new friends!

Beware! To begin: Dirty sheets, bed bugs, stinky, doors that don’t lock properly (in the bathrooms either) If you want to do volcano boarding spend a bit more and go with a better company, the eye equipment they gave us was broken and we all got rocks in our eyes, we got injured because of the broken boards they gave us and they didn’t even care. The shuttle driver hit a dog and didn’t even care to slow down or stop. It was pretty traumatizing

Staff are great and place is constantly being cleaned, volcano boarding was the best experience of our whole trip, downside was air con only being on between 6pm-6am in the room even when you pay 10USD a night extra for it but if you’re out all day it doesn’t really matter. Wasn’t too noisy in the private room even with the parties going on in the bar

I really liked the Bigfoot Hostel. The daily events are very good and a lot of fun. The volunteer workers do a great job and always help you. Valentine could really help me to find the right activities for me. She does a great job. The temperature of the rooms was perfect.

The hostel is a wonderful place where you can meet people from all over the world. The volcano boarding was a lot of fun, and the hostel also organizes dinner and parties afterward. Every evening, there's a different party, and they often arrange beach cleanups, which is only a 20 minutes away. The location is incredible, just a 5-minute walk to most of the attractions. The staff is very friendly and helped me with everything. I highly recommend it.

It's a party hostel so if you like quite place then you need to stay a bit far from this hostel because it gets really loud once sun sets. Great place to stay and enjoy the León and Volcan boarding. Even though this is a party hostel, all of the dorm mates were respectful and quiet. :) Only concern I had here: I left my stuffs on my bed and didn't use the locker until I realize that there is no restriction on premise. I see outside people come to the party, and they roam around the hostel (kitchen, swimming pool, restrooms). I even see some guys came in and took the pictures of swimming pool area, kitchen, and showers, and then they left. After seeing it, I started using the locker. I definitely recommend this place if noise does not bother you much.

Just had a wonderful time here, could share this experience with people from all over the world. Bigfoot has many services to offer, I took a shuttle with them and also went to Telica Sunset and El Hoyo camping, just AMAZING, the employees are really sweet!! My experience with the volcano boarding tour was just amazing, Jared was our guide and we had a lot of fun, just the fact that it’s a bit scary to slide down but once you follow the guides instructions everything goes smoothly 😂 Just loved this whole experience and wanted to thank Bigfoot for my few days here!!

Disclaimer: we didn't sleep here but we spent lots of time here! Make sure you book the volcano boarding with these guys - they really are the original and best. We absolutely loved every minute of it and Lester was a fantastic guide. His attention and professionalism are beyond compare. Thank you guys for making our Leon trip amazing! The vibe in the hostel is awesome too so even if you're not staying, try visit at least!

Booked the volcano boarding with Bigfoot. It was a great day, our guide Sergio was full of energy and we were given everything we needed for the boarding. The tour included so much more as well such as a free t-shirt, snacks, a couple drinks, dinner, bonfire with marshmallows (weather permitting), and pictures/videos. Would highly recommend!

This was my first hostel experience and I can’t complain. Room had no windows but with the fans and ac it was totally okay. Some people had problems opening the door, but i didn’t. Simple rooms and bathrooms and a nice chill area. The hostel was partying every night beerpong, pub crawl or chickbus party. My favorite thing was the sunset on the beach. It was really beautiful and the drive back to the hostel was really fun. The volcano boarding for me was worth it. It was fun and I had no complications, but others in my group did. Some boards were really run down and they couldn’t gain speed. Please fix this problem!! All in all I had a very pleasant stay at bigfoot :)

Did not stay here but paid $35 dollars for volcano boarding tour. Inexperienced guides risked our lives during thunderstorm. Zero first aid training or general outdoors experience. Old and tired equipment. Nails sticking out of the boards cut two riders. Dinner at a "local family"s place was nice. They all seemed miserable, as if they were not fairly compensated for the food. Upon receiving critism both guide and hostel owner were rude and dismissive. I employ all travellers to avoid this accomodation and tour. Terrible experience.

The Hostel BigFoot was an incredible experience. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with a friendly and vibrant atmosphere. The parties organized by the hostel were lively and provided the perfect opportunity to meet other travelers. Furthermore, the offered tours were thrilling. Volcano boarding, in particular, was a unique adventure. Descending the slopes of an active volcano on an improvised sled is an experience I will never forget. The adrenaline and stunning landscape made this activity unforgettable. The Hostel BigFoot's staff was exceptional as well, always willing to help and provide useful information about the region. Comfortable and clean accommodations rounded off the experience. I highly recommend this hostel to all travelers seeking fun, adventure, and a memorable stay.

Volcano boarding experience was fun. Crew was great. Fun and helpful. I enjoyed the tour. However, they gave me 12:15 pm - 1 pm pick up window from my hotel and showed up at 1:40 pm. That’s 85 mins of wait with 40 mins of delay. They try to pass this on other tourists but if they do this everyday, they should be able to predict better. Don’t punish people who are on time. I hope they improve this part of the experience.

I stayed here for 3 nights with a group of friends and we had a great time. The hostel has a party atmosphere, which is great for backpackers and those looking for some fun. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The rooms are basic and there were regular power cuts which is think is normal for the area. We did the volcano boarding and had a really good day. Only downside to the volcano boarding was the goggles, they were so scratched up that you couldn’t really see anything when going down which was a shame.

  • 5/5 Luke B. 1 year ago on Google
The Volcano boarding was an amazing day out and we’re delighted we chose to go with Bigfoot! The party bus to and from the Volcano was great fun and the staff made sure everyone was having a good time. Upon reaching the volcano, there is an option to pay a bit extra to get your equipment carried. If you carry yourself, it’s also fine as there was plenty of stops. The guide knew a lot about the area and explained lots about different volcano components which was very interesting. We were well briefed and felt very safe. Gorgeous snacks and drinks afterwards to enjoy the sunset 🌅 All in all, very memorable experience, good price and we met some great people too!

We didn't stay in the hostel, just drove to Leon for Volcano Boarding. The experience was amazing! The climb to the top of the volcano isn't for the weak, wait, yes it is! With a little self-talk and the fact the group of 40 people wait for you at 3 rest stops on the way up is motivational. The view is spectacular! We did the sunset boarding at 1pm, it's about an hour drive there and an hour to go up. You can slide down anywhere from slow to super fast, I did 30km down. Our guide is very professional, Jared Lisconini. The price was amazing, it includes the drive, snacks, drinks, dinner, a shirt and a bonfire! Like really?! I so recommend!! You can pay $5 for locals to take your board up. At the end the same locals drive back and keep serving the drinks in the magic school bus and they're sooo kind. Remember to tip the locals, also YOUNG crowds, like college town but fun!

(Translated by Google) The hostel offers everything you need for travelers. Lockers for luggage (if some were not in tact), a large courtyard with seating for relaxing and a bar for a beer in the evening. The dormitories were a bit cramped and rather dark, at night also a bit stuffy. We stayed one night because it was included in the shuttle service we booked. When we got there the world's grumpiest receptionist said we need to pay extra because there were no cheap dorm beds left that were included in our shuttle ticket. I explained that this is not my problem as I reserved the beds via email a week in advance. The recpetionist then chose to ingore us and someone else had to show us the way to our beds. When we checked out at 2 am to get the shuttle we had to pay for our tab by card (they don't accept cash because they don't have change). They sneakily charged me an extra 15 USD for the dorm without showing me the amount on the credit card machine. I had to argue again that free beds were included in our shuttle ticket and they had to transfer the money back to me. During our time there I heard many other people arguing about money.

This review is only for the shuttle as we didn’t stay there. We booked our shuttle from SJDS to Leon. The price was the same as pretty much every other place. They were quick to answer and to confirme our reservation. It said to be there at 9h for 9h30 (lol). We got there at 9h15 and the shuttle wasn’t there yet. It’s not an issue in itself but it’a not the best start. We met with our driver and got on the car. At this point, we think we are the only one in the shuttle and the driver never said anything differently. He drove at 60km/h on a 80-90km/h route for 2h... and we noticed we were going towards Granada. We then understood that there would be more people with us. We ended up being 7 passengers + driver in a rather small van. We also made a LOT of detours to go the hostels, Managua airport and so on... The thing that annoyed us is that at no point we were told that we would to granada and managua AND that we were going so slowly that everyone (including the chicken bus) passed us. Next time we will be using the chicken bus instead as it is cheaper and takes about the same time.

We stayed in Bigfoot hostel for 4 nights. It was amazing. The staff was especially great. We also did the volcano boarding with them which was wonderful. The guide spoke perfect English and the whole experience was great. Would definitely recommend.

(Translated by Google) Free accommodation if you book a direct bus from Antigua to Leon, This is the first time in the world There are a lot of parties and the atmosphere is too weak. Volcano boarding? Go up an hour and get 20 seconds down to $ 25.

The price and location cannot be beat. This hostel has great service and friendly staff, and their extra activities make things worthwhile. The facilities and rooms are quite spartan, and there's definitely a party atmosphere better suited to a younger crowd. I highly recommend the Dark History tour; it's a great overview of the local fortress and the bleaker history of the area (plus all-you-can-drink rum).

Amazing experience. Part of a large group, they were very accommodating and easy to plan with. A key feature of our time in Nicaragua!

Really fun day out and very special activity! The hike up the volcano is pretty short but it gets very very windy on top (a bit difficult if you're wearing contact lenses). The boarding itself is easy and not scary at all..you can go as fast or slow as you want. Bring plenty of sunscreen and a hat that wont blow off! Also included in the price at Bigfoot are a beer, a mojito and two more drinks back at the hostel, so well worth it.

The staff was really good, but the restrooms were dirty all the time.

Great boarding tour, really fun and friendly guide with good explanations and great English, and driving there in the back of the truck was half the fun! Great views from the top, I found the boarding scarier than expected but a great adrenaline rush! Free drinks included and the speed gun makes this the best choice for sure as they're all the same price. A bit of waiting around at the start so you really don't need to be there for 9am as they say but other than that, we loved it - exceeded our expectations!

I had an accident on my motorbike and sprained my ankle whilst driving back from cerro negro (not on their tour). They saw me, gave me a lift and helped me ride my bike back to León. I don’t know what I would have done without them and was very touched by their kindness. Thank you José - you are a STAR :)

Such a fun a lively place definitely one of the highlights of my Central America trip staying here. The staff are very welcoming and create such a lovely environment for everyone. The volcano boarding is such good value for money and is an experience I will remember forever. The experience itself is made so much better by the personalities of the volunteers and guides had fun for the whole seven hours. Can recommend doing the boarding on a Tuesday so you can go to the beach party after. There is always something going on no matter the day of the week. Will be returning to Bigfoot in the future when I get the chance.

The rooms were great! The beds have curtains and AC which was amazing! I also did the sunset hike up Tikal volcano with Lester as my guide and both the hike and him were amazing! The views from the volcano were incredible and getting to see such an active crater was surreal! We also had dinner prepared by local family who live at the bottom of the volcano in their home and it was delicious! Definitely a once in a life time experience and I would recommend the hike, the guide, and the food to everyone who comes to Leon:)

Absolutely amazing! Axel was the best guide. The party bus back was so fun!!! We were doing shots hanging from the ceiling. I didn’t go too fast on the volcano boarding but it wasn’t as scary as I thought!

We did the volcano boarding tour with Joshua this morning with my wife and two daughters (11, 10). It was fantastic! We expected a spectacular ride and it was. The guidance was perfect and Joshua explained the important things and some interesting about the volcanos with his very good English. What we did not expert were the unvelievable beautiful views during the climbing of the famous volcano by sunrise. The climbing alone was worth the tour, and then the desert ride had yet to come…

Volcano boarding was marvellous experience!!!! The journey before was even more spectacular. We were hiking up before dusk the stars seemed to be so bright and so close!! Then we sat down on the top of the volcano and we watched an incredible sunrise. After that we got proper safety instructions how to ride on the board from Axel. You’ll also get breakfast from local family, which feels so authentic and snack on the way back. I would absolutely recommend this unforgettable experience. Huge thank for all from BIGFoot team. Especially Axel the guide and Louis the driver :))))
