I couldn't visit it But just seeing the church from the sea gives me an idea of how beautiful it is and what work it brought to the people who lived here.

Standing proud in an area of exceptional beauty, the seaside town of Portovenere provides history, colour and romance in equal measure. It lies at the south-western tip of the aptly-named Golfo dei Poeti (Gulf of Poets), overlooking the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto. Once the playground of Lord Byron, it's a jewel of Liguria's Riviera di Levante. Portovenere, the three islands it faces, and the nearby five villages known as the Cinque Terre, have been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997

Worth seeing up close. Built in 1198 ! Grey and white striped marble striking exterior. The front doors of chapel are are WOW-worthy. Gothic 3-D of a bunch of characters with names but no explanatory plaque. Who are these folks? Photos here.

So cool to visit a church built in the 4th century. That would have been just after Constantine stopped the persecution of the Christians. It is not an operational church though. Wear good shoes with good grips. The stairs leading to the church are made of stone and years of wear have made them slippery. You will also see some great views from up there. Check out the grotto to the right of it where people go swimming. If you like adventure, you might want to take a dip there too!

5 Stars? No, it’s a 10 Stars place, park your car outside, it’s a 5 minute along the shore to enter the Church area, take your time, it’s a beautiful spot. After you are done with the Church area, don’t take the same route out, take the path that is going uphill, walk inside the alley, you will be surprised to see lots old buildings or houses, you won’t get lost, it’s a one way down to the main entrance

Beautiful views. A little steep but worth the view. Make sure you wear good shoes due to the cobblestones. There are also quite a few steps which made me feel a little dizzy. But it was a lovely walk - a bit like a maze

Beautiful little church. However, the strong point is really the view. My god is beautiful.

Stunning building, inside and out! Loved the front doors with the 3D sculptures. The interior, although small, is beautiful and well worth the visit. ❤️

Wonderful and unexpected little jewel overlooking the sea. A temple first, and a church later, it is an interesting piece of history and natural infused architecture.

Wow, what a view you get from the top of that church. Just wonderfull. I would definitely recommend visiting this church even though it takes a little effort to get on top.

Amazing combination of church, castle, hill, sea, coast and beautiful street. Love it. In the church it was very cool while outside was super hot, nice to sit down in this blessed place.

This is one of my favorite places to visit in all of Italy! The structure of the church and the picturesque scenery of the ocean is absolutely breathtaking.

Worth a quick visit for some nice photos and then the short hike to Castello Doria. Duration > 30’ max.

Most beautiful place we found in our vacation in Italy. Near the church there are multiple beautiful views on the ocean. Also the little nearby is absolutely beautiful.
