Dochula Pass is a beautiful mountain pass located between Thimphu and Punakha in Bhutan. Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, the eldest Queen Mother of Bhutan built 108 memorial chortens known as “Druk Wangyal Chortens” at Dochula Pass in honour of the fourth king, His Majesty King Jigme Singye Wangchuck.

Dochula pass is located on the way to Punakha from Thimphu. The pass is a popular location among tourists as it offers a stunning 360 degree panoramic view of the Himalayan mountain range. The view is especially scenic on clear, winter days with snowcapped mountains forming a majestic backdrop to the tranquility of the 108 chortens gracing the mountain pass. Bhutanese families enjoy visiting the pass during holidays and weekends to picnic and simply enjoy the scenery. It is common to see families and groups of friends seated amongst the chortens, enjoying a packed lunch and hot tea. For tourists this is an ideal location to capture beautiful pictures of the Himalayan mountain range during clear, warm days. Samll cafeteria is there where you can enjoy hot lunch/snacks . This is free entry location.

A beautiful and scenic historical place to stop on your travel between Thimphu and Punakha or Wangdue districts. One of the best breath-taking spots in Thimphu to experience snowfall and wintry beauty. There are 108 stupas signifying the 108 pieces in Buddhist rosary. Circumambulate to gain merits and shed-off your past sins. Tourists stop here for picturesque Himalayan mountain views, experience meditation like Milarepa and then of course attend Druk Wangyel Tshechu.

Absolutely amazing views of the southern portion of the Himalayas including Bhutan’s highest peak and the highest unclimbed peak of the world, Gangkar Puensum. Just do note that the temperatures can get quite cold here as you are located at 3100 m above sea level.

This is an absolute beautiful place where you get to see panoramic view of Himalaya and snow clad peaks on a clear day if you are lucky. I had the incredible opportunity to visit Dochula Pass in June, and it was nothing short of amazing. Nestled at an altitude of 3,100 meters, this mountain pass offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayas. Our journey to Dochula Pass began early in the morning, as we drove through the winding roads from Thimphu. As we ascended, the lush greenery and vibrant flora made the journey itself an enchanting experience. When we finally reached the pass, the sight that greeted us was absolutely stunning. The most iconic feature of Dochula Pass is the 108 chortens (stupas), known as the Druk Wangyal Chortens. These stupas were built in honor of Bhutanese soldiers who lost their lives in a battle against Indian insurgents. Walking among these chortens, you can feel the deep sense of history and spirituality that permeates the area. One of the highlights of my visit was the clear view of the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas. On a clear day, you can see several of Bhutan's highest peaks, including Gangkar Puensum, the highest unclimbed mountain in the world. We were fortunate to have good weather, and the sight of the majestic mountains against the clear blue sky was simply awe-inspiring. There is also a lovely cafe at Dochula Pass where we enjoyed a warm cup of traditional Bhutanese tea. Sitting there, sipping tea and taking in the serene beauty of the landscape, was an experience I will cherish forever. The cool, crisp mountain air and the tranquil ambiance made it a perfect spot for relaxation and reflection. In addition to the natural beauty, Dochula Pass also hosts the Dochula Druk Wangyal Festival in December, which celebrates Bhutanese culture and traditions with vibrant performances and festivities. Although I visited in June, the stories of this festival added another layer of cultural richness to my understanding of the place. Overall, my visit to Dochula Pass was an unforgettable experience. The combination of stunning natural scenery, historical significance, and peaceful atmosphere makes it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Bhutan. I highly recommend taking the time to explore this beautiful pass and soak in all it has to offer.

Located on the road between Thimphu and Punakha, the pass is renowned for its 108 memorial chortens, known as the Druk Wangyal Chortens, which were built by Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuk, the eldest Queen Mother. This sacred site also features the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang, a temple dedicated to the fourth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. The pass is not only a place of spiritual significance but also hosts the annual Dochula Druk Wangyel Festival. Nestled like a dragon on it’s heavenly perch, the Dochula Pass is a theatre from which to see the Himalayan mountains parade right before you like queens vying for a highly (forgive the pun) coveted crown. On a clear winter’s day, one can see the entire breadth of the ‘Roof of the World’ framed by a shade of blue that will make all the oceans jealous. But on summers, a veil of clouds give the pass an air of mystery and enchantment. But the true Queen among them all is this place- the Dochula Pass, whose head is crowned by the 108 chortens where faith and a thousand prayers resound and reign over the world below.
