البازيلكا أحد المعالم الأثرية الأجمل في مدينة لبدة الكبرى أسست على يد الامبراطور سبتيموس سويروس وذلك في عهد حكم الاسرة السويرية للمدينة ولذلك سميت بهذا الاسم . اما اسم البازيلكا في فن العمارة الرومانية يقصد به دار القضاء . وتتموضع البازيلكا في موقع مميز من المدينة حيث أنها تطل على الشارع المعمد وعلى الساحة السويرية. مميزات الموقع عرفنا أن البازيلكا تطل على الشارع المعمد ومن المعلوم أن مسار حركة السياح والزوار للمدينة يبتدئ من قوس النصر ثم حمامات هادريان والملعب الأولمبي ثم معبد الحوريات وكل هذه المواقع على نفس الشارع ثم الساحة السويرية والبازيلكا السويرية ... ونصيحتي لزوار المدينة قبل الدخول لها شراء خريطة المعالم الأثرية بالمدينة ويمكنكم الحصول عليها من أحد المتاجر قبل الدخول للآثار او من كتاب الأطلس الوطني لليبيا تأليف مفتاح ونيس .......... كتبه . مصطفى قرطع

One of the best preserved ancient city at the Mediterranean Sea. Leptis - originally a Berber settelment, dated on the 7th century BC, expanded later on by Phoenicians traders. In the 5th century the Greeks unsucessfully attempted to colonize Tripolitania (Oea, Sabratha and Leptis). After the Third Punic War it became a part of the Roman Republic. The city was greatly developed in the 2nd century AD, during the reigning of Septimus Severus. The term Magna was added by the Romans to distinguish it from another Leptis in Tunisia. Its gradual declining began after the earthquake in year 365, and in the 10th century the city ceasted to exist. It was recovered in the 1930's by Italians. In year 1987 Leptis Magna was terribly flooded, but restored quickly with the assist of the UNESCO. One day is not enough to admire art of our predecessors.

Kota ini didirikan oleh kaum Phoenician sekitar 1100 SM yang diberi nama Lpqy. Kota ini belum mencapai kejayaannya sampai Kartago menjadi kekuatan utama di Laut Mediterania pada abad ke-4 SM dan tetap menjadi bagian dari wilayah kekuasaan Kartago sampai akhir Perang Punic ketiga pada 146 SM dan kemudian menjadi bagian dari Republik Romawi. Leptis Magna tetap seperti itu sampai masa pemerintahan Kaisar Roma Tiberius, ketika kota dan daerah sekitarnya secara resmi dimasukkan ke dalam kerajaan sebagai bagian dari provinsi Afrika. Kota itu segera menjadi salah satu kota terkemuka Romawi Afrika dan menjadi sebuah pos perdagangan utama. Leptis Magna adalah kota ketiga terpenting di Afrika, menyaingi Kartago dan Alexandria.

Severan Basilica is perhaps Lepcis 'most famous monument, after Severus' Arch. These two monuments belong together. The arch was presented to Emperor Septimius Severus (r. 193 to 211) on the occasion of his visit in 203 AD, and the emperor responded by introducing the basilica, which was part of a larger project of urban renewal, which is frankly a bit unimaginable, although the ornate columns in the basilica are remarkable.

Leptis Magna , located in western Libya, North Africa, was a Phoenician city founded by Tyre in the 7th century BCE .Leptis Magna was enlarged and embellished by Septimius Severus, who was born there and later became emperor. It was one of the most beautiful cities of the world.
