The actual name of the Castle is Schalun, most likely derived from the Old Rhaetian Word "scaluna", which means large staircase. It was built around the end of the 12th century, but it was emptied and burned down already by the 14th century. After changing different owners, it now belongs to the municipality of Vaduz since 1933.

The hike is nice, the views awesome, but the ruins are so-so.

Ruins of the 12th century Schalun Castle. A good viewpoint to the Rhine Valley from 847 m a.s.l. height. There is not much left out of the old castle these days, but overall it's a place worth visiting while hiking nearby.

Nice place to stop and admire the view. Only criticism I have is that there don’t seem to be any facilities for walkers the whole way up here from the main castle in the city?!

A fairly easy hike on a nicely groomed path to the ruins of Schalun Castle.

Fun hike. Go up via the normal road, then after visiting the ruined go down through the other, more adventurous path on the right side. The views should be epic, we didn't see anything because of the clouds.

Walked a long way, the trail is beautiful, the castle ruin is a piece of history and the remaining part still looks the significance of the castle back in it time.

It's a a bit of hiking but it's one of the easiest to get without using a car. You should definitely go here if you want to
