Amazing experience, the food was delicious. We took the smoked pork belly and octopus with sweet potatoes, along with cheese and olives (and red wine). The place is small and cozy, you feel like at home. The service was good, everyone was very nice and welcoming. At the end of the night they even offered us two bottles of liquor to "drink how much we want and get drunk" If you are in Lisbon, visit this place (but remember to reserve a table!)

Amazing dinner, super tasty food and perfect service. Our waiter was one of the nicest person serving food I’ve found in Lisbon. We loved the octopus with sweet potato, we loved the shrimps. All the sauces are cooked with love that you will need a lot of bread to enjoy it properly. Aubergines with smoked yoghurt were also pretty special Desserts are also great. Loved the cheesecake. Definitely I’ll come again as soon as I’m coming back to Lisbon❤️ Don’t forget to book it in advance!

This was one of the best food experiences in my life. Very cozy and small place, you need to reserve a table beforehand. Service was excellent! We started with the orange salad and aubergine with smoked yoghurt. Aubergine had a very tasty and rich flavor. My favorite out of all the delicious dishes we ordered was the lamb. I had never eaten such a tasty lamb before. It was melting in my mouth, such a good taste. I would have ordered more from that, but I was too full😅 The service, food and atmosphere was top notch, highly recommend here to everyone.

We had a fantastic dinner at this establishment! The bread and cheese were a good starter. We then dove into the orange salad and the tomato-fig salad which were both delicious. For the main portion of the dinner we tried the tuna, chicken, baby squid, cod fritters, and sweet potato. We didn’t have a single complaint with any of the dishes. This was a great experience on our first night in Lisbon. We will definitely be back if we are ever back in this wonderful city.

From beginning to end this place was simply disappointing. We came here from a YouTube recommendation and it was nothing like it was portrayed online. The place is super cramped, poorly organized, and in general has a feeling of poor hygiene. The table we sat at was sticky in it’s ‘clean’ state which should have been enough of a red flag for us. But then service was also slow and disorganized. When the food finally came after a long wait it either barely edible or needed to be sent back to the kitchen. The pork cheek was tender but incredibly salty. The oxtail was impossible to bite through. It needed at least another 3 hours of cooking. And then the bone marrow that should have been simple came with rather mediocre bread and the marrow itself wasn’t seasoned at all so it was quite unpleasant to eat. In general I didn’t understand the vibe but maybe i caught them on a bad day. Unfortunately I won’t be coming back to find out.

Incredible place. Food was amazing, full of character and not that expensive. Everything we ordered was very tasty. We loved the pork cheeks, duck liver. Only the "famous" orange salad was quite underwhelming. Will definitely visit again when in Lisbon again.

An all-round great experience! Brilliant food, great setting and really friendly staff. Would absolutely recommend to anyone - definitely make a reservation in advance though to avoid disappointment!

A must visit in Lisbon. But be sure to make a reservation in advance. Food was really specially. Most notably the kimchi cabbage and octopus. Friendly service, nice vibe. Good wine/beer. Sort of place you’d consider going back to during the same trip!

This is a unique, tiny restaurant with their menu on the wall (in English, too). This was highly recommended by a friend but a little hard to find at first. We ordered wine/beer & cod croquettes to start. Then the chicken in pepper sauce, coriander rice. After we started eating, we understood why it was strongly recommended- delicious!!!!

We came to Sal Grosso upon the recommendation of a friend, and making reservations was definitely needed as the restaurant is tiny! Menu is written on the wall - my friend and I shared a pitcher of white sangria and it was so delicious, refreshing, fruity. Definitely the best white sangria I have had. For food, we started with the duck liver mousse, the octopus and sweet potato, and the pork belly salad. Flavours were delicious, and all the plates were nicely balanced with richness and acidity. We also got the calamari, which was crispy and super fresh. We shared a passion fruit creme brûlée to finish the meal, which was a really nice and not too heavy dessert. All of the food at Sal Grosso was 10/10, and I would definitely return if I came back to Lisbon. Staff were really friendly and welcoming. Definitely be sure to make a reservation!

Great restaurant for tapas. Definitely get a reservation before coming though as the restaurant is quite cozy. All dishes that we had were excellent while simple enough where you can identify the ingredients. Not all dishes come with a garnish and may be too rich to eat on their own so it might be good to get some sides.

This was incredible! Everyone was very nice and the food was INCREDIBLE. Is always busy so you should book. 2 mains for sharing and 2 sides are good for 2 people. But we were really blown away so we ordered extra pastel de bacalao. Excellent portions. Staff was very nice!!!

The food is incredible! It’s a really interesting menu. We tried 4 dishes and each was better than the last. A reservation is a must: the place is small and popular, it fills up super fast.

Reservations are a must. Tiny place with so much deliciousness. Eggplant with smoked yogurt, all seafood fishes were amazing (we didn’t have any meat here due to one person in our group being pescatarian) Also, they serve the best cod fritters in the city. Life changing.

Nice hidden spot with menu written on the board which you know is legit. So far one of my top restaurant in Lisbon for price and quality of food. The grill octopus with sweet potato was the best so for which great texture of octopus and sauce was amazing. At the end of the meal they serve me a local pineapple liquor that they homemade. Great experience overall. Do note the small size of this spot. Location is great as you can visit alfama after meal here.

11 Sep: We chose Taberna Sal Grosso for our first dinner in Lisbon. Being a rather small "hole in the wall" spot, we had booked a reservation, 3 weeks earlier, and was given a 21:15h slot on a Monday night (closes 22:30h)! It was one of the best meals of our trip! The youthful staff, both front-of-house and kitchen, were gracious, enthusiastic and worked at a quick pace, to cook, plate and serve to their patrons. This outlet was full-house right till closing. Located at the fringes and just a little away from the main dining/shopping area of Alfama, this was "hidden gem", all on its own. The menu was scrawled on two large blackboards, which changes with the seasons, as fresh supplies are very important, here. As may be seen, their item prices barely exceed EUR20, providing affordable quality food to a growing youthful clientele. We picked off the blackboard the mandatory Pasteis da Bacalhao, slow braised OxTail, grilled Octopus, Salad, rough-chopped Beef Tatare, Bifana, Calamari Frito (lulas fritas), downed with a white wine from Alentejo and a red wine from Douro. A highly satisfying meal.

One of the top places in Lisbon, highly recommend! Tuna, duck livers and bone marrow were the best. Definitely will be back. P.s: Don’t forget to book a table as this place is small and very busy.

One of the best meals I've had in all of Portugal! The waitstaff were attentive and welcoming. They'll bring you a drink outside if you have to wait a bit (and you will, so make reservations). They will seat you with other people as it's a very tiny space. The menu is written on the board. Note that the prices are higher than previous years, but still very reasonable. I had the chicken in pepper sauce, migas, and broccoli. All had plenty of seasoning and quality ingredients. 👌 Highly recommend!

One of the best meals I’ve had in Lisbon. I came around 12:15pm in a Friday afternoon and was the first in line. The ones with reservations were seated first and I waited just about 10-15 minutes to get seated after hostess made sure there was a free table (so yeah make reservation if you can; there are less than ten tables) The shrimp was pretty big and delicious. The summer salad and grilled asparagus were delicious! White sangria was memorable because it was so refreshing and good. Service was great; would come back again

Awesome tiny restaurant with a rather small menu. Everything tasted so awesome. The oxtail and the smashed sweet potatoes were to die for. Was worth waiting more than an hour until we got a table. Make sure to make a reservation. Very friendly, English speaking staff. In the end we received a Ginja on the house

A very local one with a note of modernity. Sal Grosso is quite hidden in the streets of Lisbon but there’s always some crowd around the place during the dinner time. It seems impossible to have dinner without reservations so a visit needs to be planned in advance. The plan itself is quite small (for around 30 people max) and the tables are really close to each other. However, one doesn’t really hear other people talking. The staff is quite friendly and takes orders quite fast. All dishes are medium-sized and meant for sharing. We really loved tartare (amazing balance of salt and acidity) and passion fruit creme brûlée. When in Lisbon, do plan dinner here. It’s worth it!

Had a lunch here and thought it was generally good. For two people we ordered a bit too much food (4 dishes) so we were stuffed by the end. While I liked the pork cheek I didn't like what it came with. The octopus is a bit pricey and wasn't the most flavoursome. Aubergines and cod were delicious. The service was great and the venue is nice.

It is a small and cozy restaurant. All food are so delicious. We really like the kimchi, fried squid, cod fish and lamb burger. The white sangria is very refreshing. Reservation is needed.

Luckly I make a reservation a day before. The inside is a bit small but comfortable atmosphere. They served the food very quickly. You can see the all menu from the black board. My recommend is fried baby squid because the outside is crunchy and good taste! Also Portages Kimchi was interesting taste !

Tapas, but more like "small plate" style servings of really delicious portugese food. We ate like 6-7 plates for 5 people and were pretty satisfied. The quality of the seafood was very good, would absolutely recommend the grilled octopus with sweet potato mash (the highlight of our day, we even ordered more mash potatoes) the baby squid, pan seared tuna and oxtail were also very well cooked and tasty. We also had some grilled prawns and the sauce was like a seafood soup in itself and the burger was very value for money. We didn't make any reservations, and the place was fully booked for days. However they let us wait 15 mins and seated us when the people who reserved didn't arrive. The server was super friendly throughout the wait. Had a great time there.

A very nice intimate restaurant with cool atmosphere. The service is greata and everybody is super nice. The main reason for the 5 stars however is the food. Amazing flavours with an authentic portuguese vibe. Would recommend to anyone who comes to Lisbon. For the quality that you get it is also affordable.

Our meal at Taberna Sal Grosso was really great. We didn't have a reservation but we were still able to get a table with only a short wait. The burras was our favorite dish, however we loved it all.

It was definitely worth it to book our place one day in advance.. Super cozy and warm restaurant. As tourists, It wasn't easy to understand the Portuguese menu, and so the staff recommended us with the most delicious dishes. Thank you.

Absolutely amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever had such a great meal. The bread was warm, the cheese was creamy, the wine was dangerously smooth and both the octopus and cod were delicious. I highly recommend

Okay. You can't go to Lisbon and not come to this place. It is by far the best dinning experience, the food is delicious, the owners/chefs/servers/all-in-one-everything (Jorge and Luis) are the sweetest people, super friendly and helpful. They are the soul of this place and will make you feel most welcome! Because of word of mouth, everyone wants to come here, so I recommend booking in advance! After our first experience, we booked another one straight away! I wish I had taken more photos of the food, but because it looked so delicious we couldn't resist for a second. Thank you guys!🙏❤

A very small and lovely restaurant, with tasty and homemade food, generally good portions to share. A must in Lisbon, but just don't forget to book early.

My Lisbon foodie friends recommended this place, so I hosted a big dinner for 30 people here as the special closing evening on a group retreat. Expectations were high as the group had enjoyed great food all week - but this was by far the best place we ate. It wins on ambiance (cozy and intimate), service (personable and friendly), value (George should raise the prices!) and most importantly food (made with love, super tasty and very memorable) Highly recommend a visit regardless of the occasion. I can’t wait to go back.

What a fabulous meal in a tiny, authentic bistro! Make a reservation or take a chance. We sat with two couples we'd never met before. Our small group included people from 3 continents. It was a joyful meal.

The food and the service was great. It is a bit like tapas idea, so sometimes you will have to wait for a dish. However.. the interior could really use an upgrade. The lamps, a color on the wall and the gas tanks in the corner.

We just stumbled upon this small restaurant close to the Train station. Everything we ordered was delicious. The staff were really friendly, some of them have to sit down next to you and take the time to explain whats on their menu which was really helpful. The only thing that I didnt like is how limited the space is inside the restaurant. The space was too small and we have to share the table with two other strangers watching us eat.

  • 5/5 Luke S. 5 months ago on Google
Absolutely worth being on your one day in Lisbon itinerary. Tapas style shared plates, excellent authentic Portuguese food, friendly staff. Partner and I couldn’t agree on which we liked most because they are all so good.

Had an incredible dining experience! The octopus was a masterpiece – perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. The smoked yogurt was an unexpected delight, elevating the meal to a whole new level. A must-try for anyone who appreciates exquisite cuisine.

Tiny basement spot with sweet service and a great vibe. Sharing tables included advice on what to choose from other diners; our highlights were rich stewed oxtail, octopus with sweet potato and a couple of spot on puddings - chocolate mousse with salt and olive oil, and a passion fruit crème brûlée. Extremely good value for food prepared with love. Worth planning ahead, they squeezed us in at 9.15pm after we checked back with them 3 times!

This was the only place we made reservations for before our trip to Lisbon, and so glad we did! Every bite was a delight. Eggplant was transformed into a velvety masterpiece. Octopus, seafood rice, calamari, all amazing. Passion fruit creme brulee was a perfect ending.

  • 5/5 Joel A. 1 year ago on Google
Incredible experience here. We showed up pretty late with no reservation. They not only made the effort to get us a table (asked another group kindly if they could share a table with us) but poured wine for us outside while we waited. That is excellent service. The food was equal in excellence. Octopus and traditional cod were particularly good. We highly recommend this place, but make reservations because it’s a small establishment.

  • 3/5 Kathy C. 10 months ago on Google
Lisbon. See pics on the food we ordered! I wish the server would correctly recommend the number of dishes to order. We felt, along with the couple who sat beside us, that the server suggested one dish too many. She was even asking if we wanted any sides to go with it which the other couple unfortunately took her up on it. She also didn’t warn us that 3 out of the 4 dishes we ordered had rice on it & again let’s not forget she was even asking after if we wanted sides. I think part of good service is also watching out for your customer’s best interest vs just order taking or worse ,up selling.

This has been one of the best restaurants in Lisbon we went to. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious! The garlic prawns and eggplant with smoked yogurt were out of this world. Fast and friendly service, nice atmosphere. Make sure you make a reservation in advance.

Found this restaurant from Google. Takes a bit walk to this restaurant. It was crowded already before the restaurant is opened. A long queue and we weren’t reserved a table. Fortunately there was a table available near the entrance. The restaurant is small, but with great atmosphere, menu is on the blackboard is a bit hard to navigate. But the staffs are very nice and not hesitate to give you recommendations. The price of the food is about 20% more expensive than the original price we found from the Google review. We ordered orange salad, wild boar sandwiches, deep fried baby squid, cod bratas and pork cheek. The food was OK, is not a Wow, especially the pork cheek is a little be out of our expectations. The one that surprised us was the orange salad. And we didn’t have dessert. Overall it’s an averagely good experience. But if you do want to try, make sure you book the table.
