First of all, this place is NOT "free" like Google maps claims. But the entry fee is only €4, and probably worth a look around. It's an amazing structure. They have a balcony view from above the front door (under the circular stain glass window) out to the street. On the other side of the stain glass window is the balcony looking down been to the pews. When the organ is playing it sounds amazing from the balcony above (I guess it's the way the sound travels within the building). On the second floor is a fascinating treasury museum, but they don't allow you to take any pictures in that area, so I'm sorry I don't have any to include with my review. After visiting the upper levels, you can come down the stairs and walk around behind the front area. There are several shrine rooms with various religious displays. I think I spent maybe 45 minutes to an hour to see most of what was on display. And, as with most of the tourists sites, there's plenty of souvenir and food shops around and down the hill from this cathedral.

The Lisbon Cathedral, also called Sé de Lisbon and the Cathedral of Saint Mary Major, is the oldest church in Lisbon. It was partially destroyed in the 1755 earthquake and later underwent major renovations. On a visit to the cathedral, there are a few things to see and do. From the upper outdoor balcony, you get a slightly elevated view over the city streets (it is worth a quick look but there are much better viewpoints of the city, as you will see later in this guide). The Treasury contains religious artifacts (photography is not allowed here). Inside of the cathedral, see the nave and walk the Gothic hallways to see the small chapels and stained-glass windows. Outside, watch as Tram 28 makes its uphill journey through the city, making this one of the most iconic spots to photograph this historic tram.

8 euro to visit but it's worth it for the oldest cathedral in Lisbon. The information on your self guided tour is limited. Some things have basic English translations but many don't. This is a working church so they expect you and your family to be quiet and respectful. I would not recommend this location for children. You get to see several tombs up close with amazing stone work. The exterior balcony has a terrific view, and the interior is breathtaking. A small museum upstairs has interesting relics. Overall this is a wonderful mature contemplative experience that really complements the monastery in Belem and the national museum with its religious artifacts. Be aware Winter hours are shorter than listed on Google and their own website. Generally get there before 5pm local and you should be good.

Historic landmark you need to visit while in Lisbon! It is bustling with tourists so go early in the day. It's not a very tall structure so it's accessible for most but keep in mind there is no elevator. You don't have to pay to enter, but paying for access gives you entrance to whole Cathedral as well as the upstairs level. It's too bad pictures are not allowed in the museum / artifact area. Oh well I guess you will have to check it for yourself!

You already know that Lisbon is pretty and nice city to be strolling around throughout the week. But I just want to remind girls and ladies out there who wants to travel in this city “wear your sneakers on or flat shoes!” Don’t wear high heels if you don’t want the heel’s stuck on the cobblestone

Another amazing place in Lisbon. View is very beautiful even though there is a construction site near it. It's a very big cathedral and it has mini chapels inside for different saints. Ticket was cheap as well. There's an area where photography -including mobile photography- isn't allowed though other tourists were left to take many pictures of this area which is why I wasn't happy about it. It requires hiking as well but you can take the tram, bus, car, TikTok or even bikes.

Visiting the Lisbon Cathedral means traveling through 800 years of history. From the high choir to the main chapel, from the central nave to the ambulatory with its radiant chapels, passing through the baptistry or the Patriarch's dressing room, it is worth discovering every corner of this building of undeniable historical, architectural, religious and spiritual value. Get to know some of the most important spaces in the Cathedral.

This cathedral has some great architectural work. The treasury has a lot of interesting relics and other pieces. The rose window has beautiful stained glass that you can see up close. The sculptural work on top of the numerous tombs is very impressive. We are excited to return once the archaeological excavation of the cloisters has finished as it should bear some incredible findings.

Very glad to have visited this historic church in Lisbon. 5 euro ticket at entrance however I do believe it is included if you purchase the Lisboa City pass which includes many other museums and attractions.

Amazing cathedral! Its very pretty inside, with amazing stained glass. The entrance costs 4 euro and it includes the little museum that is upstairs. Its a must when visiting Lisbon since its one of the most famous landmarks in the city. Very iconic.

The oldest church in the city of Lisbon, built in 1147, this cathedral has survived multiple earthquakes and has been renovated and restored several times. Featuring mixed architecture the Sé de Lisboa is interesting in a way, but far less grand than those in major cities elsewhere and only requires a brief visit.

The Cathedral of Saint Mary Major is Lisbon's oldest church. Built in 1147 it is a religious and historic icon and landmark. It has been renovated and restored and survived many natural disasters over the centuries. Hence the architectural style is mixed which is evident inside and out. The interior is beautiful as a combination of decor, statues and fittings has combined to form it's unique bearing. Worth checking out if you are Lisbon and a history religious buff.

It's kind of ridiculous that a Catholic church is closed on a Sunday! Beautiful Romanesque building and some interesting items in the treasury. Not quite understandable why taking photos is forbidden there. Entrance fee 5 € (2024),with Lisboa card 4€.

Very old cathedral to view - we visited here end of February on a weekday in the later afternoon. It was 5€ per person & there’s a good amount of areas to explore. Upstairs the stained glass and treasury are interesting. Overlooking the floor below it’s a good view of the architecture & design. The treasury is impressive but they do have someone there to yell at you if you try to take pics. (Every other church we visited allowed pics so interesting that it’s different here). On the main level the pillars and archways make you feel very small and provide great photo opportunities. The organ is beautiful & there’s a lot of information provided at the side on boards, explaining the history of the church being the oldest in Lisbon, having mostly survived the 1755 earthquake. As most churches here, this one is also very beautiful and impressive to image how it would have been built so long ago. Definitely recommend a visit if you’re religious and/pr love architecture.

A beautiful Cathedral, but it can't compare to other churches you can find in Europe, or even in other parts of Portugal. Prices are cheap and there are some neat artifacts inside. Definitely visit if you are spending time in Lisbon. You may be underwhelmed if you have visited other cathedrals, but still worth the trip.

Shows the rich history of the cathedral within the city and how it has survived many earthquakes and changed over the years. Would have been good if you could walk all the way to the top, but still nice views of Lisbon and the water from inside.

The view of the suspension bridge and part of Lisbon street from the top was quite nice. I also liked the details of the ceiling in one of the rooms of the church. The church was quite bigger than I imagined it to be. Worth a visit.

Paid €2.50 adult to enter the cloisters. There are steep steps up to the exhibits on the first floor showing the clothing of years gone by amongst other things. You can head out onto the balcony at the front of the cathedral and get good views over the square and a beautiful overview of the interior with the Romanesque arches and the stained glass rose window. Enjoyed wandering around the transept with vaulted arches and looking at more of the colourful stained glass windows.

Lovely ancient church but the cloister is closed. I think it's probably still worth a visit but I was looking forward to seeing the cloister. They have an interesting collection of 17 and 18th century robes and reliquaries. Inside the seu, I think the 12th century sensibility (possibly even a smidge Romanesque) is still apparent in the architecture. It feels weirdly tall which I found unique. There are several interesting medieval sarcophagi that you can admire up close. It will be great once they finish the excavations and you can see the cloister, the iron age, the Roman, and the Muslim layers.

Very interesting cathedral, definitely worth seeing (especially if you're staying nearby like I did). The ban on taking photos in certain parts was somewhat deflating and, overall, it was perfectly fine and worth seeing, but nothing truly outstanding.

One of the oldest cathedrals in Lisbon. It doesn't look impressive from outside, very impressive from inside. This place is not very crowded, which is a plus point. The exhibits are very unique and beautiful. Must visit place in Lisbon.

Disappointing, really disappointing. There really is no reason to visit this church if you have ever seen any provincial gothic church before. As a matter of fact it's more Romanesque than it is gothic. It is a small, dark, dungeon-like edifice that is as plain on the outside as it is on the inside. It now costs 4 Euro to enter, which is an outrage, and another deterrent for entering this singularly unimpressive temple. I mean, even the rose window is off center... Don't go out of your way.

A wonderful and magnificent cathedral dedicated to St Vincent. It has many amal altars. It is here St Antony was baptized. It has a museum on the upper level with many vestments and other religious items. Further renovation works are going on. After an earthquake in the 1770s the church was rebuilt in its original place. A must visit in Lisbon

20minutes to see everything on show, €5 per person. Architecture inside and out is amazing, the treasury does not allow photos but the view from the balcony is beautiful. Worth seeing if you have an interest in architecture, history or religion. Not suitable for kids or wheelchair users.

Wonderful spot for reflection and prayer in the heart of Lisbon. Important to note that there is a 4€ unlike what google maps suggests. Despite the dissapointment of the fee, the cathedral is still a beautiful building, with different chapels to pray in, and a viewing balcony showing specatucar views of the city. Only a stones throw away from tram and bus links, it's very well connected to the rest of the city and is sure to be a highlight of your trip to Lisbon!

The “Sé de Lisboa” is one of the most iconic building in the city. It is located in the beginning of the “bairro alto” and is easily accessible by tram (highly recommended trip, by the way) You can visit the interior to see its wonderful architecture and very peaceful atmosphere. On the second floor there are some windows and a balcony where you can admire some beautiful views of the city.

Passed this church several times before but never have chance to visited, sometimes there are grand wedding ceremony. Finally visited it today when I walked down from the view point above. Free to see the church but €4 to see their treasures. Interesting points to me: 1. It is the oldest church in Lisboa; 2. It is where Antonio de Lisboa received baptizado; 3. On the wall of stairs to the treasure room you can still see Sinal da Cruz -- a mark of Cross which is believed made by St Antonio to dispel devils.

The cathedral is easy to get to but is now surrounded by roads and buildings so difficult to get a sense of the size or even shape of the building. Inside there is an exhibition of future plans which look like the cloisters will be excavated and then open to the public so that'll be impressive. The ground floor area was very solid and unpretentious and it was great to be able to go up to the gallery and look down inside the church. There were also views from a balcony and a museum with reliquaries and vestments. The tombs in the cathedral were interesting in that the effigies of all the women showed them reading books and all the medieval tombs I saw had dogs on them too. The knights buried were shown in full armour and with swords but not with their legs crossed like crusaders which surprised me. A lovely building, well worth half an hour or so and around €6 I think for the entry.

The solid and imposing Se Cathedral is Lisbon’s most important and iconic religious building. Since the 12th century the Se Cathedral has been entwined in Portugal’s early history, which bore witness to the baptism, marriage and passing of Portugal’s nobility and elite. The exterior of the grand old church resembles more that of a fortification than religious centre, with massive solid walls and two imposing clock towers.

Has a great view on its small balcony right beneath the big stained glass window. Inside are interesting artifacts which are all related to Christianity and the Catholic Church. The stained glass and the depiction of saints on the first floor are beautiful. Has a whole museum upstairs which you can buy a ticket to visit, it contains the artifacts, you can also go up to the balcony with the same ticket. A small part of the downstairs can be visited without the ticket but I would still buy a ticket for this, as it would just be a regular church experience without the ticket. We could not get the student discount since we were not Portuguese students, the price was still reasonable though.

The Lisbon Cathedral, commonly called Sé de Lisboa, is the oldest church in the city dating back to the 12th century. This impressive Romanesque and Gothic cathedral has undergone renovations over the centuries after damage from earthquakes and fires. Climb the church towers for panoramic views over downtown Lisbon and the Tagus River. Don't miss the ornate rose window, intricate stone carvings, and the Treasury with sacred artwork and relics. The cloisters and medieval courtyard provide a peaceful respite from the bustling city. Experience the rich history and architectural splendor of Lisbon at this remarkable cathedral.

Beautiful cathedral with an incredible history, spanning Roman, Islamic and Portuguese times. The castle has been a public utility place, a mosque and now a church. The Lisbon Cathedral is a monument to the post-earthquake state of Lisbon, Portugal. A true engineering marvel of the Portuguese renaissance. Entering provides amazing views of city, but not the best. It has a large museum inside filled with lots of majorly important items from the roman catholic church such as popes clothing, ancient biblicial books, golden crosses, challices, etc. The cathedral is also filled with countless paintings that are hundreds of years old. They are something to marvel at themselves
