The courtyard of the Monastery is very calm and beautiful. The stone carvings are fine and delicate . Well worth a visit but it is important to understand that you first need to buy your tickets from the machines in the entrance to the Archaeological Museum before joining the queue to enter the Monastery. There are no signs to warn you of this and we saw numerous people being turned away after being in the queue for quite some time.

The architecture of this place is truly stunning. The finest example of Manueline architecture anywhere. It's hard to notice, but every column on the lower level of the cloister actually has a unique pattern and design. And then every side of the cloister has a different arch design on the upper levels. Pretty crazy how much detail and ornamentation is packed into the arches and ceilings with just one texture and tone to work with. Definitely worth the €10.00 entry fee. Buy your ticket online and completely skip the ticket line, you can walk right in.

This monastery is an absolute must see in Lisbon. The sculpture work around this building is amazing. There are so much detail and history that has been carved into the rocks of this building that is definitely deserves a careful look.

Be sure to visit all three areas — the cloister, the gardens and the (free entrance) church. A morning visit is best as there are less people and the light just hits the stained glass perfectly. Tickets can be purchased at the info center in the park right across. As of Dec2023, it is 10 for adults and 5 for students. Additional activities in this area include the Modern Art Museum right next door and the Monument to the Discoveries.

Stopped here based on recommended spots in Lisbon. It's split into two parts, one is where you paid to enter and see the entire monastery and the other just inside the church which is free. It's about 10 euros to check out the paid portion, which is still worth it. The lines move pretty quick. Definitely a great location to check out.

Nice but in peak season you need to consider a waiting line of 1h at least, under the sun. The place inside is quite nice but the access is granted only in common part, the price of the ticket is too high for what you can visit. I feel it's not worthy the wait to visit a square corridor. Visit the church, it's free of charge and it's much better.

This is another must-see in Lisbon. The Monastery is massive, with incredible architecture and a central courtyard. It is a UNESCO heritage site and it is not hard to see why. I highly recommend getting there early and buying your tickets online. The queues are significant, particularly during high season. If you don’t want to wait in the queue, you can try to go after 1:00 PM as the crowds usually die down by then.

The exterior of the monetary is very beautiful. There was a long line when we arrived but the line moves fast. We had not bought the tickets already so I tried to get them online. A bit of hard work. The inside garden and fountain are were pacifying and relaxing, especially in the heat of the summer. Place for enjoying the quiet and making some beautiful photos.

This is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and for good reason. The architecture, the scale, the details on everything, the beauty of it all... they are amazing and truly awe-inspiring. Even from the outside, you can tell this is a truly special place. There's a lot to see here, so to be clear, you can go into the church for free, which was about a 5-10 min wait for us during the mid-afternoon (around 3pm). You can also go into the cloister, which is a separate line and requires a paid ticket. The wait for the cloister was about 1.5-2 hours at that point, so if this is a must see on your checklist, go early in the morning to minimize your wait in line. There is zero shade anywhere close to the monastery, so the wait in line is with the full sun beating down upon you for the entire time. At least at Belem Tower, there are nearby trees where the kids can wait in the shade and they are still nearby while I was in line. Here, not so much. Just be prepared. Perhaps the cloister is super amazing and worth it for some people, but I thought the church was pretty fantastic, so it's worth it to see that much at least.

(Translated by Google) Built next to Restelo beach, where there was a chapel founded by Infante D. Henrique, the Jerónimos Monastery is one of the most beautiful examples of Manueline art and the most imposing relic of the maritime epic, its cloister is a true jewel for its proportions, originality, lightness and ornamental exuberance. One of the most beautiful in the world. The church is a wonder, there are buried, D. Manuel, Dona Maria, D. João III, and Dona Catarina, D. Sebastião, Vasco da Gama, and three great figures of our Portuguese literature. Don’t be afraid of the long line outside if you didn’t purchase your tickets online in advance. It goes quickly. As far as the visit, we have never visited a monastery before so it was a unique experience for us. Tickets were $10/pp so worth visiting it. I recommend it.

Magnificent and resplendent structure along the main drag and just back from the Belem Tower. Due to a military ceremony we could not get inside to see more of the architecture and interior but it was a great day with the sun shining and the scale of the building and intricate design was apparent from the outside.

If you have Lisboa card, you don’t have to wait in the line for ticket office. You can go to the entrance directly. It was splendid building and the inside garden was beautiful. The stand glass are so colorful and shining very beautifully. This is one of the most wonderful place you should come with Lisboa card when you come to Lisbon. Worth visiting and highly recommended!

An absolute must see especially the cloister. The intricate sculptures and decorations are stunning! Buy the ticket in advance but do note that even if the site where you buy it says “skip the line” there is no such thing, you will still need to wait in the queue (for us it was around 30-40 min - but absolutely worth it). To behold the massive size of monastery, after you exit go to the other side into the park behind the big fountain ⛲️- it’s a perfect spot to take a picture and just enjoy this marvel of human ingenuity.

Don't waste your time and money for this overly hyped tourist trap. 10 Euros for entry ticket and waited in a long queue for more than an hour under hot Sun. The building inside has two floors and a couple of tombs, that's it. The inside view is beautiful but definitely not worth the waiting time. Lisbon itself offers much more spectacular places than this empty building.

Come here to see the structures, which is what the monastery boasts the most. Not too much signs about its history, but it’s still worth a visit even though there’s not too many rooms to see. The cue line definitely gets shorter as the day goes on, about after 2:30 or so. Definitely also visit the other parts of the monastery, like the church (it’s free).

Amazing place. You just can't help but wonder how was it possible to achieve such fine craftsmanship back then, with all the elements looking like if they came out from a production line but you know they were made by hand. Astounding roofs, beautiful walkways. Don't worry about the waiting line, it's usually very long but moves fast.

Jeronimos Monastery is obviously very beautiful place. Very beautiful, BUT. But, there is huge line at the entrance and if you don't have e-tickets, at the end of 30 minute wait, you will find that ticket line is in the other part of the building. So, when visiting Jeronimos Monastery, first search for ticket line and only after that stand in big line for entrance. Moreover, entrance price is 10 Euro and value for money is very low. P.S. if like visiting graves of famous people, Vasco da Gama is burried inside chapel that is actually free to enter with separate entrance and free of charge

We were there in the morning and did not purchase tickets in advance online and had to spend 15 minutes in the first line to get tickets and then an hour in the second line to get inside. It is a cool place to visit with lots of history, but it is not worth waiting in line for hours. When we walked by in the afternoon, the second line was very short. So I recommend going there in the afternoon.

Unfortunately, this important and symbolic point of Portugal didn't quite meet our expectations. There was a meaningless queue at the ticket office because there was only one person working. There was also a queue at the entrance due to the groups they were letting in. The entrance to the church and monastery was separate. We initially waited for the church, which had a longer line. I recommend going knowing that the entrance to the church is free and deciding whether to buy a ticket for the monastery after exploring here. The rib-vaulted ceiling of the church, where Vasco da Gama's tomb is also located, is impressive and worth seeing. Other than that, there isn't much. Unfortunately, due to the crowds, you can't spend much time inside. You walk around, examine the surroundings, and walk back from the right side. There is a treasury section inside that you can enter by paying a fee, but it didn't seem to promise much. You see Gama's tomb on your right as you exit. There was no too much line for the monastery on the date we visited. After leaving the church, we crossed to the other line and showed our ticket to enter immediately. Unfortunately, for €15, you can only visit the courtyard of the monastery, not the monastery itself. I'm saying this without any exaggeration. Apart from the courtyard of the monastery, there is hardly anything else to see. The courtyard is not very impressive either. Normally, monasteries have a peaceful atmosphere, and you relax as you wander around. Unfortunately, there was no such atmosphere here. There were people taking videos/photos and making noise everywhere. Moreover, shortly after we entered, a crowded group of school children came with their teachers. They roamed around making noise and disturbing everyone, but the only warning they received was the "shh" sound repeated a few times by their teachers. They were not warned by any monastery staff. In short, I recommend visiting the church. As for the monastery, look carefully at the photos, don't have high expectations, and decide accordingly.

(Translated by Google) Jerónimos Monastery or Jerome Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, pronunciation in Portuguese: [muʃˈtɐjɾu duʃ ʒɨˈɾɔnimuʃ]), is the former monastery of the Order of Saint Jerome, located near the Tagus River in the Belém region in the city of Lisbon, Portugal. This monastery was secularized on December 28, 1833 based on a state decree and its ownership was handed over to the generous institution of Real Casa Pia de Lisboa. [1] This monastery is one of the most important examples of Portuguese Manuelin architecture in Lisbon. This site is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the Belém Tower which was located not far from the monastery in 1983. History This monastery replaced a church that had been standing in the same place and was dedicated to Santa Maria de Belém. At the church, the monks of the Order of Christ provided assistance to the seafarers who were stopping by. Amazing monastery, huge building with kinda Gothic architecture. The ticket is 10 euros and from city center to there tram/bus 15E that costs 1.5 euros one-way. Inside is quite big but no so much to see, is more about the history and architecture I believe.

This Monastery is located on Tagus river. It is one of the finest examples of Portuguese Gothic style in architecture. The construction started in the 16th century and lasted 100 years. Today, it is classified by the UNESCO as protected human heritage. Few minutes walking from the monastery is Belem Tower. Admission fee: Church free. Cloisters: 10€ (with a visit to Belem Tower)

Absolutely beautiful and it's a must see if you're in Lisbon or Portugal in general. Beware the lines are going to be super long. This is where the Lisboa pass really came in handy because if you didn't buy the tickets in advance you would have to probably wait at least an hour just to get to the ticketing office and then an hour just to get into the monastery. If you have Elizabeth pass you can go straight to the line that leads into the monastery. Inside is magnificent architecture and a beautiful courtyard. It's one of the highlights of our trip to Lisbon

Wonderful monastery that enchants you with its beauty and history. You can visit it in two ways. 1st with a daily card that is for all means of public transport (but only part of the monastery is free) you buy there of course a ticket to enter the museum and the inside beyond the temple. The second way is to buy a card that includes admission to some museums and is at the same time a ticket for public transport. My opinion is to get the Lisboa card even one day has a lot to see around the area that is worth the money. the monastery is one of them! Don't forget only part of the monastery is free

You can spend around 15 minutes walking through this place. It is a nice building but almost devoid of any art. The stonework is interesting but the decor bland, to say the least. Certainly not €12 of value. Very disappointed.

Breathtaking architecture. I'm glad we came. It was low season for me so there was no really wait. The only thing is the ticket booth to get tickets is some distance away. So best to locate that first before walking awestruck to the entrance of the monastery like I did just to have to turn around and go back.

(Translated by Google) Required tour. The place is magestous. The very large Atrio with runners around with ceiling gotica architecture, where you can take wonderful pictures. It has a museum and the Church belongs to the monastery with several vaults of a single architectural wealth. The grandeur of the Jeronimos shows how rich Europe is in culture and faith. From there you can walk about 30 minutes to the Belém Tower for a return to the past. Parking lots ahead.

Wonderful cathedral with a lot of sculptures. Ticket is 10 euros which from my pov is kind of overpriced since you only go around the corridors. There are no descriptions about the insides and also it's not interactive at all. Still a nice 30 min walk You must also buy the ticket from another entrance , then come back to the monastery entry and show the ticket. Also here there could be very many improvemens for clarity and directions

The Jerónimos Monastery or Hieronymites Monastery (Portuguese: Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, is a former monastery of the Order of Saint Jerome near the Tagus river in the parish of Belém, in the Lisbon Municipality, Portugal; it was secularised on 28 December 1833 by state decree and its ownership transferred to the charitable institution, Real Casa Pia de Lisboa. The Jerónimos Monastery replaced the church formerly existing in the same place, which was dedicated to Santa Maria de Belém and where the monks of the military-religious Order of Christ provided assistance to seafarers in transit. The harbour of Praia do Restelo was an advantageous spot for mariners, with a safe anchorage and protection from the winds, sought after by ships entering the mouth of the Tagus. The existing structure was inaugurated on the orders of Manuel I (1469–1521) at the courts of Montemor o Velho in 1495, as a final resting-place for members of the House of Aviz, in his belief that an Iberian dynastic kingdom would rule after his death. In 1496, King Manuel petitioned the Holy See for permission to construct a monastery at the site. The Hermitage of Restelo (Ermida do Restelo), as the church was known, was already in disrepair when Vasco da Gama and his men spent the night in prayer there before departing on their expedition to the Orient in 1497

The architecture of the monastery is stunning beautiful. However we could only visit the corridor and some pieces. Although they are well detailed and we can take some nice pictures, I think that it doesn't worth the 10€ ticket for like 30-45 minutes of visit. The waiting line outside is very long, luckily with babies we had priority to cut off the line.

Beautiful Monastery and definitely worth a visit. We arrived quite early (around 10AM while it opens at 9:30AM), and there was a bit of a line. I see other reviews saying that the line was over an hour - it definitely was under 20 minutes for us. It still looked very long, but we were surprised at how fast it moved. So if you're looking to get a quicker entry, I'd recommend coming early in the day based on my experience. We didn't get to see the cathedral (free) but did get to see the cloisters (€10). I don't believe there is an option to buy tickets in person, but they have a QR code you can scan at the front of the line for you to buy online. Just scan the code and get in line, and finish the purchase while waiting. For us, we had a Lisboa Card, so the entrance was free. However, please note that if this is the first attraction you're using the card at, you'll have to redeem the QR code for a physical card a few steps away. The Lisboa Card info desk is not part of the Monastery and you'll have to walk across the street to redeem it. There were no issues using the card and we spent around 30 minutes inside.

It's OK Very little signage for info. Nice pictures but it wasn't worth the hour long wait in line watching people cut in front of you. You never leave school do you. I bought tickets on line while I waited in line. It worked well. I wasn't sure how long the wait was so I delayed buying tickets until I was sure I was going to wait.

It's a beautiful piece of architecture. However, we thought it was overpriced at €12 per person. We bought them online so avoided the queue for tickets. There's not a huge amount to see, walking around takes about 15 minutes. We queued for over half an hour, and then we were told we had to queue again to see the church. Wasn't worth it.

It's quite a disappointment really. Open at 10, buy ticket across the street across the i booth Get in line around 9:30am If you want to tour the cathedral, ask for the right ticket. We spent $12 euro and ended up just walk in to see the courtyard. That's all. 1. We waited for an hour (at open) to get in line. 2. The ticket they sold us only for the courtyard. It's nice but not worth 12euro and not much to see. Unless you joining a tour to see the cathedral, don't bother. Left line is to courtyard, right side is for the cathedral. And you have to have the right ticket.

This is a tourist attraction and we were in the line to get into the monastery for over an hour! It wasn’t a pleasant one waiting. But when we got inside, it was totally worth it! I wonder how they built it cause it’s a work of art👌 Loved every moment here on how the monks lived and the church. There were graves and is amazing how they have kept this for centuries. I highly recommend.

Well-managed crowds, incredible views, amazing stonework, and a gorgeous, free-to-enter chapel make this a true highlight of my time in Portugal. I highly recommend it, partially because, despite many tourists coming here, it's not too crowded and you'll still be able to have a wonderful experience.

According to a Manueline Renaissance design by the Cantabrian architect Juan de Castillo (1470-1552), commissioned by King Manuel I of Portugal (1495-1521) as a commemoration of the discovery of the Indian sea route (1498) by Vasco da Gama Sodré (1467 -1524). It was financed with 5% of the taxes levied on oriental spices. Of the first late Gothic period (1514-16) directed by the architect of French origin, assimilated Poetuguese, Diogo de Boitaca little remains. There was no queue when we arrived on a Tuesday morning and it was nice and quiet inside. If you have the lisboa card you should pop in for a quick walk around. It's very nice. Didn't spend so long here, just maybe 30 minutes.

Not bad, the combination ticket it not bad, there is an odd thing with the Museum of Architecture where you have to check all bags (even handbags) but it's informative, worth a look. The Monastery is lovely, not a lot to it but genuinely lovely and definitely worth going. There are a lot of area closed off but I hope that they are working on restoring so they can open in a few years.

There are two lines for ticket and both are the same. People usually wait on the right queue I do not know why. There are six ticket machines but only two operating. I guess because of the covid. Worth to visit. Easy to buy ticket. I did not wait too long.

Beautiful building and lots of history. We didn't visit the monastery (you can with a city pass, or it's €10 otherwise) but we did go inside the church (free to visit) and that was spectacular and imposing. Set across from a beautiful park with a fountain. I'd say a must on a visit to Lisbon. Beware, packed with tourists, and the tram there was absolutely packed, which in Covid times made me very uncomfortable.

Must visit place in Lisbon. Beautifully crafted stone and wood details! Stunning archers and galleries on 2nd floor. Recommend to buy €10.00 ticket to visit the court yard, trust me it's worth it. Church (1st floor) itself is free to visit. Magical place, have never seen anything like it.

Nice to see, but you did not miss anything if you missed it. (Building is impressive tho and the visit does not take more than 45min, the row outside is much longer! ) Ps the visit to the church is free and has a different row and is more impressive.

Such a masterpiece of architecture and arts. It’s breathtaking! From exterior to interior, every wall, window, arch, and ceiling is so beautiful and elegant, full of details and creativity. This is a must see place in Lisbon. The church inside is also very beautiful. Please be prepared for the line up. I went there in the morning and had to wait for a while to get in.

Pretty inside but not worth €10. Even if you have a ticket, expect to queue. Once inside all there is to see is a square which you walk around on two floors. Don’t waste your money, go to Belem tower instead. Also, if you want to look at the church too - you have to queue again.

Get there early or you will have to queue (though it does move quick) to get in fully exposed to the Lisbon sun. Make sure you get a ticket before hand. But totally gorgeous on the inside. One needs reminding it was built in the 1500s!!! Church part is free but they do ask for donations if you wish. Could have done with some more material describing its history so if you keen on that, come with your own material.

It's pretty inside but so much smaller than I expected, and I think it's not worth the 10 euros and I feel it's a bit overhyped. The church right next to it is free however and actually quite impressive. In any case, if you're in this particular area, it's worth walking down to the water to see the Belem Tower as well. Taking a bike or scooter highly recommended.

Hard to rate a monastery, however, it was quite exuberant. If you plan to pay for entrance or enter for free, be prepared to wait. The line could be a 45 minute wait or more; the heat in the summer can be unnerving to those not accustomed to that kind of heat. The area is big for tourists as the vicinity has several cafes, restaurants, and other tourist attractions.

This is not what i think of when someone describes living a "monastic life!" Gorgeous, to be sure. Would have appreciated a little context and education about what happened here, how the monks lived (we didn't get to see their sleeping spaces, for instance - just the public areas).

Took 1.5hours to get in. Get tickets online. It's a shame you don't get to see much of the place. There is a lot that you can't get access to. Can see the church part on the way out which was cool. The architecture is very good in the monastery but very little details available on its history. Overall it was good but the wait was ridiculous.

Buy your tickets online ahead of time so you can at least skip the ticket line. If you don't purchase tickets ahead of time you have to wait both in the ticket line and in the line to get in. The line is long, but the Monastery is so worth it! Go early if you want to avoid the crowd, we went in the middle of the day and it was manageable though. We went through the Monastery first and then popped right into the church. The architecture is just stunning. Well worth a visit and long lines. My only note is I wish it had some more history or context to read while you're walking through. Despite this it is still a beautiful place to see.

I highly recommend visiting it! Beautiful architecture from the 16th century. It mixes the 3 architectural styles: Manueline, Renaissance and Plateresque. The surrounding area has a lovely garden nearby the Tagus River.

A proper place to visit and find your peace! It is situated next to a nice park and very close to the Monument of the Discoveries!

(Translated by Google) A beautiful, sacred place with a distinctive identity in the Gothic style. The other side is the Renaissance era. The inside is even more beautiful (Original) สถานที่สวย ศักดิ์สิทธิ์ โดดเด่นเป็นเอกลักษณ์สไตล์โคธิค อีกด้านเป็นยุคเรอเนสซองส์ ด้านในยิ่งสวย

Very cool old monastery, worth a visit. Not much in the way of information about the site but what was there was informative.

Great place with nice architecture view from inside and outside. I recommend it to anyone who visits Lisbon. Also, has some Pharos antiques and historical marbles from Roman’s era. Try to visit it early because it gets packed. Also the Belem area has many things to do.

    Stunning architecture. Unique space.

  • 5/5 Christina C. 2 years ago on Google
Late Gothic style (Manueline) architecture, showcasing impressive stonework, especially in the inner courtyard. The materials were simple, but the lasting craftsmanship was ornate and engaging. We're glad we popped in for a tour when we came to this end of Lisbon. Note: as with most places in Lisbon, it's worth getting your tickets online to avoid the longer lines.

  • 4/5 Jeffrey River N. 2 years ago on Google
Beautiful architecture. The intricacies of this building are a delight. Entering probably depends on what exhibits are on display and how big the lines are. We chose to just walk around the outside, but also visited the free chapel.

Felt like it was in the church of Germany, Austria. Breathtaking 😍😍

  • 4/5 Federico B. 2 years ago on Google
I recommend doing the €6 ticket online. Go there as early as possible so you don't have to queue. I expected a bigger place/longer visit but in 30 minutes you see everything. If you go to belem you should come here

  • 4/5 Andre H. 2 years ago on Google
The building is magnificent, 10 euros but you can use side door to visit church free.

  • 4/5 Aron S. 2 years ago on Google
It’s a gorgeous building with pretty good access. The signs were all in English but there weren’t that many signs. I would have liked a little more information about the history and uses of the monastery over the centuries. An audio guide might would have helped. Well worth a visit to see the gothic architecture.

Very good historical monastery. It has amazing architecture. The problem is that there are no clear signs on where to buy ticket onsite. Many people have been waiting for one hour only to find out that the ticket office is at the first entrance. At the ticket office, there was one machine. Two are out of order. There is no other line for cashier.

  • 5/5 Gary W. 2 years ago on Google
Some amazing architecture. Definitely one of the big ticket items in Lisbon in a town generally short on big ticket items. If you're here, don't miss it. The adjacent church is free and has a separate entrance.

  • 5/5 Vit M. 2 years ago on Google
Very beautiful monastery, entrance for 10 € (adult) is worth. When buying the tickets, there are 2 queues, left one to pay by card only, right one provides both, cash and card payments. Not sure why but most of the people stays in the left queue... :-)

  • 5/5 Daniel U. 1 year ago on Google
For the entrance you need to pay 10€ for a normal ticket. Honestly, if you love the oldie architecture and history, you would enjoy this place. It's beautiful and makes you wonder "how is possible this was built in that time in past?".

  • 5/5 Luke L. 1 year ago on Google
This was such a beautiful with Lovely structures; so much detailed and was put on every part of the building and the ceiling. If you're interested for a visit that I would highly recommend it to come earlier the day before the lineup to get much longer especially during a very hot day since there's no cover nor shades for waiting outside in line

  • 5/5 ernesto p. 2 years ago on Google
There is only a little portion of the monastery that can be visited and it takes less then 30min, however I found it quite astonishing. I suggest to buy the tickets online to save some time at the tickets office. I highly recommend to visit this cloister.

It's the place to see in Lisbon, both for the beauty and the refinement of the elements that make up both the church and above all the cloister. The church attracts tourists both for the interior or for the columns that look like trees carved with fronds to form the ribs, but above all for the tomb of Vasco da Gama

  • 5/5 Alexandra de L. 2 years ago on Google
Breath-taking architecture, even more splendid thanks to the afternoon light. Half price for student, you must stop there if you are in Bélem!

  • 5/5 Dominik S. 1 year ago on Google
Beautiful place! Book your tickets in advance though since waiting times can be quite long and there’s no shade.

Magnificent structure! Among the few place you must visit while in the city.

    Beautiful architecture. Not too crowded.

  • 5/5 Florent 1 year ago on Google
It is a beautiful place, to visit absolutely. Queue organization needs to be improved. There is a first queue to buy tickets, then a second queue to visit.

  • 5/5 Daniel Nordstrand F. 1 year ago on Google
We had read a lot about long queues so we were expecting the worst. But we were positively surprised. We had bought tickets in advance for the first time slot (9.30) Saturday morning. We arrived around 9.15 and there were maybe 10 people in front of us. When we reached 9.30 there were maybe 30 people in line and we all got in swiftly. Contrary to what you might have read, we presented our tickets on our mobile phone and that was no problem. Staff was kind and helpful. We brought our baby and was advised to place our stroller at the entrance as they cannot be transported to the second floor where the exhibition starts. Yet I saw other people who just brought strollers to the ground floor and skipped the second floor. There is another line for the church that opens at 10.30. After our visit we got into the line of the church some 15 minutes before it opened. This line was not long either. And furthermore we got to skip the line because we had a baby. And then there is the monastery. That is really beautiful and worth a vist

Okay y’all if you only have money or time to do one thing in Lisbon, it’s this. DO NOT MISS IT. This is the ONE thing you HAVE to do in Lisboa. While you can find excellent and intricate tile or marble mason work in other places in the world, this is by FAR the most beautiful that I have ever seen. I would highly recommend going at a time when the marble work is sunlit. At 530pm in late February, the sun was illuminating about half of the courtyard and made for beautiful photographs. I am not sure if at noon the overhead light would be better. Don’t forget to stop at the top of the stairs and get a good look at the painting of St. Jerome on your way in or to stop by the rectory on your way out!

Maybe the best touristic spots and location in Lisbon. Place is gorgeous, full of history and spots for amazing photos. It’s well organized and it does not feel crowded at any point. Line is a bit long, but works well.

One of the most impressive historic places I have visited in Europe - and a strong illustration of the power and richness Portugal gained through the Colonisation it drove over centuries. The monestary was developed and improved over these periods and today is mostly famous for the Manuelist aspects. But also the older parts are worth noting and of course the church (separate listing)

Visiting the monastery proved to be a rather underwhelming experience. The long queue, stretching under the scorching heat without any benches for relief, added to our disappointment even before entering. After waiting for an hour and a half, we finally made it inside, only to realize that there was nothing of particular interest to see. The monastery consisted of just two floors, both offering an identical view of the garden. Within a mere 3-5 minutes, we had thoroughly explored the entire space, leaving us wondering if the wait was truly worth it. To make matters worse, if we wanted to visit the church, we were required to endure another hour-long wait. Considering the lack of variety and the minimal time needed to see everything, it's difficult to recommend the monastery as a worthwhile destination. The absence of benches or seating areas further detracted from the overall experience, leaving us feeling frustrated and exhausted. Unless you have a specific interest in the church or the garden, it may be best to consider other attractions that offer a more enriching and fulfilling experience.

Really enjoyed viewing both the cloisters and the chapel. It's slightly annoying that there are separate queues for the two and wait can be a little long, we waited roughly 30 minutes. Overall very cool though, although they could have done a bit of a better job explaining the history.

  • 5/5 Ivan V. 8 months ago on Google
The monastery is fantastic looking but the tour is only for a section of it. Still great. Beautiful. Buy tickets in advance online and get in line with plenty of time before your allotted time slot.

  • 4/5 holls c. 8 months ago on Google
The monastery itself is stunning, but the queue to get in during peak times is at least 30 minutes long. There are two queues - the right to get into the church for free and then the left for the queue to the monastery which you need a ticket for. Beautiful place both inside and out, just a shame I went when it was so busy.

  • 4/5 Alessandro B. 8 months ago on Google
Beautiful building from the outside. We wanted to visit it but we were really discouraged by the long queue. I would suggest buying tickets in advance and possibly show up there when they open in the morning to avoid having to stay under the sun especially during hot summer days.

  • 3/5 V K. 7 months ago on Google
This is an amazing place but any visitors should be made aware that you will be expected to queue (currently in searing heat) for up to 3+ hours. If you are elderly, ill or just not able to take the physical rigour of this - forget it. It is a health and safely issue that the public are expected to suck up. The actual visit takes about 20 minutes. Buy your ticket online for €10 because if you don't you will be forced to queue twice or worse you will brave a 3 hour queue only to be sent back to do it all again. You have been warned.

  • 4/5 Dylan N. 7 months ago on Google
The wait is long but it's worth it! Went on the weekend and the wait was just over an hour. I think they try to make the inside experience nicer by limiting the number of people inside (less crowded, looks better) You can buy tickets in line, £10 for 2 adults

  • 5/5 Preetam N. 7 months ago on Google
Beautiful and very peaceful and calming when once you're inside the monastery. Long wait times and a long queue outside. Recommend carrying an umbrella to protect from the Lisbon sun.

  • 4/5 Russell K. 6 months ago on Google
Two sections, the cloisters that requires tickets that can be bought online, of the church that is free. Even with tickets online be prepared to wait a long time if you arrive after a group tour gets in line. Its okay and a fantastic structure but not worth a multi hour wait.

If you’re staying in Lisbon please add this on your list. Take the train and visit Jeronimos Monastery it’s so beautiful words can’t describe how beautiful this place is. You need to go early in the morning the line can get pretty long.

  • 5/5 Kris J. 5 months ago on Google
Visited this place on a weekday in November at 16h30, no queue and not a lot of visitors. You can easily buy a ticket online and you’ll get a QR code in your email ( nog instant, but about 5 minutes ). Amazing place ( see photos)

  • 5/5 S R. 5 months ago on Google
The carvings are amazing and I was surprised at how many people didn't look at them in depth. There is a queue for the cloister, get tickets from over the road before joining and a separate queue for the church which is free to enter. We arrived around 2.30pm and the que was much shorter than it had been when we passed it in the morning.

Very nice place, this area is full of tourist attractions. Highly recommended. The ticket booth is on the opposite side by the park, or book online.

it was a coincidence, I was only in Lisbon for one evening and this place was right near my hotel. I woke up early to visit before leaving Lisbon and it was the best decision. Encourage everyone to buy tickets in advance!

It is an amazing place to visit. Whether you do a tour or just go around on your own. Such wonderful architecture and stunning scenery.

  • 5/5 Kitty H. 4 months ago on Google
Amazing sacral architecture. There is no way to put the art that went into creating this monastery into words. Get the Lisboa card or get your tickets ahead of time. The ticket office at the monastery is rather far away and that way you can just get in line once you have arrived at the entrance.
