Of the 5 hostels I stayed in on my Portugal trip, this was by far the worst. First, you should know, there are many stairs. This is common in Europe, but I think it's important to point out, there are a lot of stairs in this building. The building is pretty rundown. There was a hole in the ceiling of one of the staircases with a warning sign about watching for falling pieces. The staff was not very friendly and the place was not clean. Our room had a window on a courtyard, with no fresh or circulating air. It was super hot and stuffy. There was one night when police came, I don't know why. I would not recommend staying here.

Worst hostel ever! Arrived late post a delayed flight. Communicated it would be a late arrival either an early morning arrival and they were given our flight number but the booking was cancelled once we had landed. Arrived to the accommodation and appears to be a dungeon with drunk older males haggling females at the entrance. The staff were helpful in rectifying the cancellation. Made our way to our room up another two flights of stairs. Booked a twin room and got bunk beds with towels that were hand towels. Our room was unsafe to say the least. The air con didn’t work, the room was sweltering hot and the door didn’t lock to the balcony that was shared with multiple other rooms. The blind covered half of the window and half of the glass was uncovered meaning that two females were unable to change in privacy. We felt invaded if we were to sleep as the glass was unable to be covered. Went to the toilet after and there was no toilet paper in three toilets and someone had left their excretment in the toilet and had not been cleaned. There was urine all over the floor. Other hostel guests shampoo and shower products were strewn all over the floor and showers making it unable to have a shower. Not surprised that all the 5 star reviews are male. But as a female felt unsafe, scared and disgusted that the amount I paid for the hostel was absurd given the state of the hostel. Would not recommend unless you wanted to catch a disease. We quickly booked a hotel for $150 euro more and was so happy we did. Do not book here. It is not safe I wish I took photos to prove this utter disappointment

It’s kind of like they put bunk beds in an abandoned building. Loud bass until 10p daily. Very similar to staying in a frat house. Coed bathrooms/showers — doors didn’t close completely or lock. At no fault of the hostel, the other guests were very loud all through the night — coming and going drunk until 4:30a. Many guests left their dirty dishes all over the property, toilets were not flushed, and trash in the sinks. The beds were comfortable, but the locker doors lifted upwards making it difficult to access your belongings. Somewhere to sit in the bedroom would have been useful for guests with top bunks. No curtains. Very close to city center, although alleyway in front of the building featured razor wire and welded shut doors.

I just stayed here one night and it was a great place to stay right in the city. The staff were really nice and helpful. My room was a big one down on the street with air conditioning, so this was very welcome in mid July. Clean and comfy beds, I got a single bed on a mezzanine floor, there was just one shower and toilet for the large room, so I got up early to take advantage. I’m just knocking one star off for the breakfast as it was a bit mediocre for €3.50 and they didn’t have or even seem to know what breakfast tea was…. (A disaster for a Brit like me)😀

If you’re a young person looking to meet new people and do some partying, or just some exploring in a great location, this hostel is for you. I stayed here for 4 nights and i couldn’t be happier to have chosen this place. Everything is nice: clean showers, toilets, beds. All staff i got to meet were so friendly and accommodating, willing to help at every moment. As a solo female traveller, i felt very safe here. If you visit, the free walking tour and bar crawl are a must. I definitely recommend this hostel and if i’m ever back in Lisbon (which i’m sure will happen), they will be my first pick.

super zentral, nette Zimmer mit jedoch etwas ungeschickten Stockbetten. Es ist nicht super sauber, aber grundsätzlich sehr angenehm, nettes Personal und perfekt, für ein paar spontane Tage in Lissabon

Rooms are absolutely overcrowded, toilets & shower rooms are so tight, hard to move your arm and legs… Not suitable if you looking for a peaceful night sleep.

The place is okay. The room we had is a 14 person dorms which is not a problem in itself. The problem here is that there is one shower, one sink and one bathroom for all these people in this room. In addition, it has a private entry. Which means that to go to the kitchen and all the shared places, you have to go outside, ring the bell and someone will open. In my room, they were only one plug for two beds. Fortunately, my sister was underneath me so we shared it. Next, my lock didnt fit on the lockers so I slept with my passport and money. Honestly, it might be better if you are not in the 14 dorms and the smaller ones, but at this price i would never recommand.

The room in the basement is actually the worst room i have stayed in my whole life. The so called "air" made me want to throw up everytime I entered the room. It's very humid and not ventilated at all. It's really disgusting and I actually got sick from it. The toilet reminds me of toilets i have seen in prison movies and the smell would probably be the same. The one star is just for the location, which is perfect. Just 2 min walking to bairro alto.

Hello! So I want this to be detailed and devoid of any inflammatory remarks. I think people should just know the facts about a place before staying, so here they are. 1. Staff was incredibly helpful, worked with us to get into our rooms earlier than check in which was incredibly generous, and they were more that happy to respond to any and all questions or concerns. They are really carrying the weight of this place. 2. Location is awesome. No need for any further elaboration. 3. There is NO AC. We got a room here in the middle of july. There was no air conditioning. I know Portuguese buildings are older, and have history, and are hard to update which can cost a lot to regulate temperature, but simply opening a window in the middle of july doesnt just make the room not 100 degrees. This is its biggest flaw by far. I couldn't stay here in the summer again, but I'm also a weakling when it comes to heat. 4. Rooms are standard. Narrow ladders so be careful on the bunks. We had one bunk that was broken, but the front desk blocked it off and made note of it immediately after i notified them. All and all this place is amazing for those of you who dont care if its 90 degrees in your room, and just need a place to put your head. The front desk staff is brilliant. The showers are good. The view from the top floor is honestly gorgeous, and it's in a great location.

tl;dr: Choose an independent hostel instead. We booked two beds, but staff only provided us with one key card. Asking for another we were told that there weren’t enough cards for everyone. This complicated our stay a whole lot, even though you only need a card to get into the dorms. Sitting in the lobby we overheard other groups of even more people having the same problem, but some could negotiate for another card. Not an acceptable behavior by the staff. The beds were only okay. Slightly uncomfortable mattresses, only one ladder for three beds in our six person dorm (you can climb the frames in an exhausting way) and the metal frames loudly creak even at moderate movement. The organization in the kitchen is not optimal. Need a sharp knife? You need to annoy the three people in front of the stove, all trying to cook their food at the same time. A sign in the lobby forbids externally bought alcoholic beverages, which are also not allowed in the rooms. The views were nice, the WiFi spotty in some places. Showers were great, but could really need a mirror. The bathrooms are small and can easily get cramped. Also more or bigger mirrors instead of the small tiles would be nice here. Overall this place looks nice from the outside, but the small annoyances and strange decisions by the staff add up. Instead of this franchise, choose an independent hostel and support the local community that way.

The 12 bed room is along the street so it can get very noisy as the neighbourhood is lively. The room and toilet have a weird and funky smell and the room's ventilation can definitely be improved. The ladders are narrower than usual and slightly weird to climb. There are no charging points beside each bed so it can be a slight hassle. The location of the hostel is amazing.

Very nice hostel with good services. If you’re looking for a nice stay to go to with friends, this is quite nice as very near the main attractions of the city center. The downs are common to hostels: can be very noisy (including the doorway of the room and its floor). There is only one laundry machine that accepts only big coins (the lobby is cashless) and you have to buy your own washing products. But overall very fine experience.

10/10 the location, close to everything we wanted to see. The person from the front desk was friendly and attentive. The bed, wasn't comfortable at all. We struggled having rest. The pillows and the mattress were too thin. And of course the cleaning in the bed was really poor. I ended up full of bed bugs bites around my legs and my arms. And the detail of blood stain I one of the blankets was awful.

It was honestly very disappointing, I genuinely found the only redeeming quality to be the location and the pub crawl that's organized by Way2Go (definitely worth it). I arrived initially to a power outage in the entire hostel and later when I went to check in at reception they told me their website is not working (KEEP THAT IN MIND) and said I was "in luck" because they still had one bed available; no apology, nothing of the sort. Later as I walked into my room 107 I was greeted by 2 sweet Italian girls.. and a fat cockroach running across the floor. Pretty poor stay in general, wouldn't return. Much better places for the money in the surrounding area. 2 stars

Incredible. My first hostel experience and it was way better than I expected. Met amazing individuals from day one, the area to connect was very, very welcoming and inspiring, the staff and how helpful and welcoming they where made the entire experience one of the best to remember. Of course some impressions were more powerful than others, like how organised and clean the space was and certainly the remarkable Michael that would get "exceeding service expectations" to a whole new level of his own. Great experience and I would be glad to go there again if I'm in Lisbon. Thank you for everything. Very highly recommended

Have a person who was nice and help me if what I need to be there for one night. But the hostel its in Portugal and don't have enought people who speak Portuguese, have some guys (who apparently work there) and make the place uncomfortable, the house its old, but everything works. In the recepcion some works gave a information and other another information. The location is great and easy, but I don't think I would go back there. I travel a lot and this is part of my job, evaluating and recommending hostels.

Safestay? It was not. The staff were nice enough to allow me to use the facility prior to check in. I had a bottle of wine with me (I’m on holiday). I was reminded multiple times that there is “no outside alcohol”. I wouldn’t have stayed here had I known this. I dried my clothes and headed out. Location is great with the exception of a construction crane that was operating close by bright and early every morning (very loud). I arrive later this evening, complete check in, and retrieve my clothes from the dryer. As I made my way back inside I was met with a staff member who was holding a 10” kitchen knife as defensive. I was extremely startled by this. He asked me how I came inside. I told him that I had checked in, got my clothes and gave him my room number. The staff member continued to hold the kitchen knife. I told him he could put the knife away as I was harmless and a guest at the hostel. He finally puts the knife down. Aside from this, breakfast (laughable) was terrible. Everything (which wasn’t much) was low quality. There wasn’t even any eggs. Staff stated they ordered some but that they haven’t arrived yet. My advice, stay somewhere else. Spend your money on another hostel.

Overall the hostel is okay. Unfortunately, the showers do not offer any space to put your things down. The upper beds are very difficult to reach because the ladder is very narrow. Also, the breakfast is not worth the price, so it's better to bring your own things. But at least the service was good, same as the pub crawl and most important: the location of the hostel is really great.

Quite disappointing. Location is not ideal despite being in the center. It would be convenient to soundproof the rooms and clean the bathrooms more often. There are much more convenient hostels in the city.

Keeping the 4.0 rate. Why: Pros: good location Almost clean (almost beacuse the bathrooms have bad smell) Nice bed clothes Nice outside environment (lovely to wake up with the birds and sunlight) Good security stuff, like alarms in the doors or the bracelet for guests. Clean and good showers. Nice crew. Cons: In one of the rooms there are 2 beds that are just separated by a wooden wall so it's like you are sleeping next to your roommate. Very very small toilet space. Check in is very late at 15:00 even if they have the rooms cleaned you need to wait. No space to store things to be close from you in the bed, just a cabinet under the bed. _-----_----------- Similar to other safestay hostels so is a good choice if you are in a budget.

A beautiful building inside and out, in a local-feeling neighborhood in the center of the city, next to everything. The people working there are so friendly, fun and ready to help you and they make you feel very welcomed. It was so enjoyable chilling in the balcony with such a nice view, or inside the living room. The breakfast was also delicious and really fulfilling. The only disadvantage was that the beds don't have curtains and that the room was cold. I will definitely chose it again.

There is guy from Brazil working there with curls. He doesnt give people the feeling that they are Welcome. And he doesnt want to help guests. He also want to controle everything. He looks nice but isnt. Maybe its better die hun if he find another job. Because he is not friendly to guests.

Super friendly and spacious hostel in the center of an area full of bars and social life. Like everything else in Lisbon be prepared for a bit of climb. Once you are in front of the hostel, more climbing is needed as there are stairs to the entrance. Inside of hostel - more stairs to the rooms. Rooms are nice, with nice views and windows that can be opened. Toilets are clean. Shower rooms are in the hallway. Each contains a shower and some space in front, which you can use for (un)dressing. You'll be identified as a guest by a bracelet which you'll have to wear all the time. Be prepared to show it to the front desk once you enter the hostel.

Took a week holiday in the hostel. Was one of my best experiences. The staff is really helpfull and great. Big thanks to Michael, Thais and Elton. Working really hard and great service and of course sometimes they are very busy. Besides I met some really cool people from all over the world. The facilites to meet people in living room and terrace are great. Of course its basic but its a hostel. Viva Lisboa :)

Nothing fancy. Good for staying a few nights. Some rooms and doors are quite old. Social atmosphere is average. If you're looking for a new social atmosphere, there may be other better options where the hostel takes out the guests. Overall, it was comfortable and fine and nothing special.

  • 1/5 Kimberly W. 6 months ago on Google
Would not go again. The beds have no curtains, are sooo loud and there is literally no privacy. People come late at night and leave early in the morning waking everyone up all the time. The location is nice, but there's no vibe. Happy to leave...

After years with traveling and a lot of different hostels, I would say Safestay Lisbon is amazing. The staff is helpful and friendly, the areas are clean, and the backyard is perfectly calming. Also the pubcrawl they arrange at the hostel is worth every penny as it also help you find other travlers.I will for sure keep using Safestay on other trips to. Highly recommend this place. I will be back in the future 😀

We arrived yesterday night, but unfortunately didn't find a nice welcoming from the receptionist guy, his name was michael or mike something like that, when we arrive we asked if we could take two beds for the night, he asked if we have reservation but we didn't because we wanted to know if we could pay directly (some times is cheaper) he was very sharp saying they dont accept cash, as we needed to have debid/credit card to complete the reservation because something related with taxes, we understood that part and accepted it , when we were proceeding to book with the debit card, he gave us a higher price compared of what was on line. So I told him I was going to do the reservation on line since it was cheaper. In the mean time a french family arrived (an this is one of the main reasons why I'm writing this complaint ) and he totally changed his mood he was very kind and helpful with them if something that really annoys me is not having the same treatment as others. Since the begging he was having attitude with us with no reason, like if he didn't want us to stay at the hostel, I don't know why. Anyway followed by that we paid the beds , even do when there was possibility to stay in upper and down bunks together he gave us totally an apart bunks in different rooms (and as we arrived we noticed there was availability for both staying close) cleaning of the beds was not bad. I cant say same about toilet and showers and the wifi was not reachable, he gave us only one key to access even tho we where to people. I understand there are certain things that are out of hands from the hostel team but what I can't comprehend is a different treatment when we are same clients. Hopefully this will be change and this person gives a better customer service to everyone.

After a very frustrating mixup because of GeoStar (don't recommend booking through them), they were very understanding and made an effort to accommodate me. The worker was really friendly despite me having a meltdown and crying lol but I appreciate how kind they were to me. Also everything is super clean and very pretty.

Location is great, a lot popular tourist destinations are in walking distance. The breakfast tastes great, it is every day the same so it can get boring quickly. The rooms and toilet's are clean and look very modern. You do sleep with multiple people in one room but if you up to that it is a great place. Also, free wifi!

Clean and cheap hostel in the heart of Lisbon. Location is great. Bathrooms and bedrooms are clean and comfortable. There was no shower though (maybe only on our floor🤔). For £3 or so you can have breakfast there. There's free storage for your luggage under your bed. Overall, you need a place to stay for one or two nights, this hostel is a good choice😊

I arrived at 12:30 AM from a Warsaw plane. I had plenty of euros in my pocket. I was told I can't check in after midnight. & there was free beds open for the hostelworld & booking.com algorithm but not for me unless I pay with credit card. But I couldn't pay with credit card. I had cash. So I was turned away. Without WiFi or a SIM card, new to the city, I have run around looking for another hostel in the middle of the night with my backpack. Horrible experience. Unprofessional. Fix your system.

This hostel cancelled us a book without any explanation. We asked them if is anything wrong arriving in another date than the expected because of a car accident in our way to Lisbon, and they told us that everything is ok and no problem with our date of arrival. Our surprise takes part when we arrive to the hostel and they have booked our room to other people and left us in the street. No apologize, no empathy, just absolut disrespectful to their words and their clients. One star because I cannot give them a 0. And of course one official complaint to the customer service. Very bad amateur service.

Great localisation, nice atmosphere and really helpful stuff. I would totally recommend staying in this hostel. It has a pleasant common areas and is soo close to nightlife in Bairro Alto :) The cheapest room on the ground floor is not 5 stars, but all the rest are really good.

Extremely busy time when I arrived, however had no further issues on the check-in as the front desk team did the extra mile to save me time and ease everything. They even offer me a glass of water, which is lovely after climbing all those the stairs. The atmosphere was great, music playing all day and a bar open for some snacks and drinks. Something to improve would be key system as they seem a bit old and tricky...but them again the receptionist on duty helped me out with this in a blink of an eye! Thanks guys and hope to see you soon!

Not worth your money. There’s no privacy in the rooms, the bathrooms are rarely clean, and just getting up and down from the top bunk is a massive pain (this is the only hostel without ladders). The location is good but besides that, do some more looking and book somewhere else.

  • 2/5 A Google U. 1 year ago on Google
I wouldn’t stay here again. The staff was friendly and professional, no complaint there, but everything else was inconvenient and subpar. The reception was at the top of a long flight of stairs, far away from my room, the bunk beds were really difficult (and kinda dangerous, I almost fell) to get in and out of because of the narrow, weird ladders, the lockers were difficult to open and close, the outlets for chargers were not close to the beds, the bathroom and shower was small and dirty, the breakfast plates and silverware were dirty because everyone was expected to clean their own things (which I suspect most people don’t). Ok value for the money I guess but not a very pleasant stay and I was glad to leave. I will look for another hostel next time and discourage others from this one until it improves. However, the staff again was very friendly, they explained how to do the laundry and called a taxi on my last day, so I’m very grateful for that!

One of the best hostel in Lisbon, amazing staff who does the job perfectly, cleaning and keep the whole property hygienic. Beds are nice and comfortable, rooms are clean and good, dining areas is nice, fully equipped kitchen, nice and healthy breakfast (3.5€) worth. Flexible activity in hostel and all the staff is amazing and very respectful. Wishing great 👍

The rooms are good and beds are comfortable. Toilets and showers are so good for price you're paying. The kitchen is terrible, so would recommend to dine somewhere else. The location is amazing because it is so close to centre.

I booked a spot in the 14 bunk room which turned out to be downstairs on the street. The room had a weird smell throughout, as did the bathroom, which had no ventilation and only one toilet, one sink and one shower for 14 people (not to mention there was never any hand soap in the dispenser). My bed was unfortunately right next to the bathroom and as there’s no door to the bathroom area, I was woken up every time someone came to and fro the bathroom. Since there are no curtains on the bed, the light woke me up every time too! Additionally, there was no shelf to put my stuff on for the top bunk and there was trash leftover from the last guest in the side of the bed 🤥 the comforter also smelled sour. The ladders and lockers were also both poorly designed. I was very disappointed, especially because there are much cheaper and lovelier options nearby.

  • 3/5 sagarika s. 1 year ago on Google
Location is good but toilets and bathrooms are extremely dirty for which I don’t blme the hostel but the guests itself because rooms and toilets are cleaned everyday but its the people which are really disgusting. So if we all make sure that we are staying in a maintained way then it won’t be so dirty. However the beds are not comfortable at all and there are no curtains as well, when someone turns on the light you easily get disturbed and ned makes noise while turning. I would recommend you to take lower bunk bed rather than upper. Otherwise overall, for temporary stay like 2-3 its not a bad option.

Great hostel, just 10 minutes from the centre, the rooms are big and clean, and the shared bathrooms as well. Breakfast for 3,50€ is decent, normal things. If you don't have a towel you can ask at the reception for 2€ and if you wanna leave your bags at the hostel after check out is also 2€.

Stayed here for a night as I had an early morning flight and the hostel I was originally staying in was booked out. The place initially felt like a great decision to make at a steal price, however, I soon changed my mind. The rooms are clean and my limited staff interaction was nice. The problems with privacy within the room still remain, there are no curtains and if we're in a room of more than 4 beds then having some privacy is something you would expect. The same issue is something I experienced in the bathrooms as well.. the bathrooms are cramped and small with doored stalls but an overall open access, so you can hear people in the hallway while you're in the stall and vice versa which was something I found uncomfortable. The biggest issue I had was with heating. With the winters drifting in and being a hostel for travelers from around the globe, at below 18 degrees, you would expect some heating within the rooms or atleast a close door/window policy in the night. However, the doors near the kitchen area and the windows in the bathroom and on the second floor were open throughout the night making the entire building and the room chilly (despite the room having the windows shut) Overall, it didn't feel like the hostel was managed to be hospitable. it just looked fancy.

Great! Very thriving social scene. Make sure to expect hostel and not hotel. Shared bunkrooms. By hostel standards had nice bath/shower facilities, a functional communal kitchen. Easy to make friends with travellers and find events.

Very nice hostel in a great location in the city centre, quite near to the metro. (Please note that the hostel is located part way up a steep hill, with cobblestone paths. It’s okay if you are ready for it though and have suitable footwear). Excellent staff there who were always very helpful. Nice building with character, and close to lots of cool places like Rossio, Baixa, Barrio Alto and Parque Eduardo VII.
