Such a lovely and well kept zoo with a great variety of animals and beautiful gardens. There are wonderful little kiosks for snacks and drinks as well as a large picnic area if you want to bring your own food. You can easily spend a whole day there if you have small children as there is so much to see.

I have been to many zoos but this in my opinion is the best one so far. Huge variety of animals, most of them I saw so close for first time. Also the cable gondolas offer a great way to see everything from a new perspective. A must visit with kids!

This was, hands down, the best zoo I have ever been to(and I visited many!). The beautiful thing about it, is that all the animals are not in cages (excepts for the birds and the snakes). They are in enclosures but with no glass nor fences around them. It was actually refreshing! The zoo is so well-kept, I was impressed. The ticket is not pricey either and it's really easy to get around.

Date of visit: 12/19/2023. There was a bit of construction & the entrance was not so welcoming! However, the inside was great: Amazing Dolphins Show A wonderful tram ride from which you can see big animals like lions Affordable food items Great seating area Affordable ice cream Friendly staff All in all, a great Zoo to visit. Comparison pool includes zoos in Rome, Dublin, Calgary, Denver, and some other big cities in America! Free Santa pictures!!!

Unfortunately it’s only 3stars because so many animals were missing. The bear wasn’t there, we barely saw the lions. We almost couldn’t see the white tiger. No dolphins, no reptiles. For sure it must be because of covid, but the ticket prices were the same. The price should have been a bit less if you couldn’t see everything in the zoo and some areas/activities were closed. Just saying. The zoo was cute though, I just felt like it lacked so many things. The zoo wasn’t that clean too. But we enjoyed our time there, at least.

Beautiful and very large. Allow at least 3 - 4 hours (more if you have small kids). And don't miss the tram ride AND the dolphin show ❤️

Fantastic place to create beautiful memories. My daughter loved all the animals even being 2yr old. Lunch time was quite warm so most of the main attractions were sleeping. Beautiful vegetation with many matured trees and nice gardens. The dolphins were just fantastic. Everything was very clean and the animals seemed to be happy and well treated. Surely to repeat in a couple of years!

What a fabulous place I don't always agree with zoos but unfortunately it's on of only ways to save some poor animals from extinction. They do have a dolphin show but we didn't go to that for personal reasons. But the place is spotless and the animals are very well cared for. A great day out for the whole family. The metro station is straight opposite the entrance and there are little stalls and cafe bars along the road to the zoo.

One of the best zoos I've been to. They have such a variety of animals and they seem really well cared for. A highlight was the gibbons singing. Only thing that could have been a little better was the amount of information about the animals. This was a bit limited which was a shame given the zoo's focus on educating people about the animals. The dolphin show was incredible! Such a spectacle with the animals doing amazing things whilst clearly having a fantastic bond with their handlers. The park itself is beautiful with so many gorgeous plants. You get a really good view of them all (and some of the animals) from the cable car, which is a really nice addition. The food selection inside the zoo wasn't super great and there wasn't a lot of provision for non-portugese speakers for knowing what was on offer. But they do have more places just outside the zoo in the free part of the park.

We visited here on a Tuesday this week and it was very quiet, which was nice. So many of the enclosures were open, which made the visit a lot more pleasant. I have never liked visiting zoos where everything is behind cages or glasses. I understand this is for safety, but this zoo showed that animals can be on display to the public without there being continuous glass or fencing. The animals on show there were fantastic, and we had some really nice interactions, especially with the chimpanzees by the windows! We have been to a few zoos, and rate this as possibly the best one we have been to!

Lisbon Zoo (Jardim Zoologico de Lisboa) is a zoological garden in Lisbon, Portugal. It was founded in 1884. It was the product of the efforts of Dr. Van Der Laan, owner of the largest aviary in Portugal, with the support of Bento de Sousa, Sousa Martins, and May Figueira. In 1905 it was transferred to its present location in Sete Rios, Lisbon.

The zoo was clean and very well kept. The animals seemed healthy ♡ and it was such a wonderful day spent there. The atmosphere is lovely. I recommend waiting until late afternoon to use the cable cars, as you will skip the long queue. The cable car really is a wonderful journey and you will get to see certain animals you might have missed while you were on foot. Great atmosphere, happy families, ice cream, coffee shops, and amazing animals.. it will be a day well spent for you indeed 😁

Didn't start / end very well due to the parking situation. Putting that aside, it's a must go place, family friendly and will definitely go there again! If you buy the tickets in advance you have a discount of 1,50€ but IMO not really worth the trouble. It's amazing to be that close to animals you don't normally see... I was amazed! The dolphin show is one of the highlights. Easy to spend over 5 hours in it. A few improvements + The sortiment in the ZOOvenir. They sell killer whale toys but there's no killer whales in the park. Also, got the feeling the nicest animals weren't represented in stuffed animals or they were but not on a beautiful way. + The bears have such a big space in the map and then it's a small place that looked like a prison. + Only one ATM had cash and not every place allows payment with cards. + There was no sea lion in the dolphin show, just like before. It'd make the show more interactive.

Amazing zoo. Animals and enclosures look well maintained and happy. We got there on a weekday at 10 o’clock when they opened and it was very quiet. Great to have time and space to see everything. The cable car ride was cool and really different. Surprised at the number of rhinos. Very easy to get to from central Lisbon by metro.

Had a really fantastic time here today. There are really diverse groups of animals from all over the world and they seem to be really well taken care of. The enclosures and pens are all clean and the environment is so lush with lots of pretty fauna. It was really charming to see the farmyard corner where they grow lots of vegetation and to see all the farmyard animals like chickens, turkeys, goats, rabbits and sheep in the same yard co-existing. The shows were incredible, and the two we saw were the pelicans and the dolphins. Sadly we missed the birds in the forest. My only critiques are that the shows were presented in Portuguese and there wasn’t any signs or information in English so felt like we missed out what charming and educational content they were presenting, and the refreshment bars were also only in Portuguese which made it difficult to know what was available and what to order.

Sadness In Cages - Paired With Gross Neglect. The grounds aren’t kept up well. Some buildings literally falling apart, many exhibits are closed, the aerial tram is closed, etc. You’ll also encounter many huge holes in the pedestrian walkways which make the place dangerous for toddlers to run around, as they may stumble and hurt themselves. Many areas in the hilly park have no ramps, instead merely stairs which makes them hard to maneuver with a stroller (let alone a wheelchair). Many of the“restaurants” on the grounds were closed, and the few that were open for business had nothing on their menus we would have considered - even if the food was included in the exorbitant €29 per adult ticket price. Sadly, many of the visitors walking around smoking cigarettes, setting a bad example for children and made the park smell like an old ashtray. Unfortunately, we did encounter trash and overflowing trash cans in all parts of the park. Not even the greenery is well cared for. Most animals which - without exception - looked very had to endure the never ending onslaught of very loud low flying airplanes ✈️ on their way to the airport. The airplane noise is incredibly intrusive in this part of town and it never stops for more than a few minutes at best during daytime. The animal enclosures are either small and dirty, or simply dirty and very tired looking. The only positive I can point out is that there are many of the original buildings and the original layout still preserved, which provides a certain level of old world “charm”. A benefit all the blatantly obvious negligence may provide 😬. But like the rest of the Zoo, these older structures are in dire need of repair, too. The Dolphin show has been mentioned as a standout in other reviews. The level of noise due to amplified music during the show makes it almost unbearable to watch, especially if bringing a small child is part of your visit. 92db measured are plain crazy and completely unnecessary - torture For humans and animals alike. The sounds can be heard far away from the dolphin show and I wonder what the poor people living in the surrounding apartment building think about it. All in all I advise against visiting the Zoo. Not a good experience, and considering how pricing has become disconnected from what’s being offered look elsewhere if you value your time - and money.

The park is bigger than expected and will take at least a couple of hours to see it all. If you take your time you can easily spend the day there. There is a wide variety of animals and the scheduled shows are entertaining and worth the visit. Special note to dolphin show which takes close to 30min and very enjoyable. There are plenty of shades so even in hot days you can walk around without overheating. Lastly you can bring in food and drinks but note food sold inside isn’t overly priced so you might also just get a grab inside.

Amazing zoo, very well kept, the architecture is great, and there is a great variety of animals, unfortunately we didn't have access to the reptile area, and the dolphin show was also closed (COVID-19 restrictions), but we spent a great day. The gorillas being the most entertaining species to see. The zoo is also well located, with an underground parking that's not expensive for the day (around 7,5€ for the whole day), there are also bus stations at the entrance of the zoo. You have a McDonald's inside, and plenty other places to eat, if you need to leave for having lunch they tampon your hand with a ultraviolet light ink. There are also inside the attractions little cafés where you can grab a snack or ice cream, and also vending machines distributed all around the zoo for beverages.

It is a nice zoo but definitely not a must visit. If you have enough time here in Lisbon do visit the place. I Quick tour of the zoo will take around 1 and half hours and if you take time you it can easily take upto 3 to 4 hours

This is a very nice and well kept zoo. The animals look relaxed and healthy. The compounds seem appropriate in size to me. The staff is very friendly. Information panels are in portuguese and english. Lots of food and snack options around the zoo. You can easily reach the zoo by taking the blue line metro but there's also enough parking space. I really enjoyed my visit to the Lisbon zoo.

Amazing zoo, definitely worth a visit when you are in Lisbon. I have been to many zoo's around the world but saw a few animals here that I have never seen before. The dolphin show was stunning, even better than the one we saw at the Valencia aquarium recently! Its included in the admission price as well as the cable car ride. Also lots of shade on the walking paths that helps when its very hot outside. Put aside 3-4 hours (without kids) to see all the animals. Also close to the Metro stop which is a plus 😁

A must visit objective in Lisbon! Amazing experience for us and the kid. We spend half of day here and we did not get bored. Great variety of animals. The top experience was the dolphin show: this was one of the best shows I've ever seen, kudos to the team! So please keep in mind to consult the schedule for dolphin show in advance, after your entry, to make sure you don't miss this unique experience.

A must-see when in Lisbon. The visit left me very happy and in awe of nature. The zoo is quite accessible by public transport and (metro) and very easy to do in 3 to 4 hours. The proximity to animals is good enough that one can see the clearly. Tip: Go as soon as it opens as they residents of the zoo get cover if the day is hot. Additional attractions are: show of dolphins - an absolute must see 3 times a day so you must remember the times and plan around. Enchanted forest show - show woth birds that is also great and cable-car ride which gives opportunity to see the whole zoo although it might not show all animals. I highly recommend the zoo.

(Translated by Google) Located in Lisbon, it is one of the oldest aquariums in the world. His design project was integrated into the program of Celebrations of the IV centenary of Vasco da Gama's departure for the discovery of the sea route to India. It was sponsored by King D. Carlos I, who was very interested in all activities related to Oceanography and deep knowledgeable about marine species, which he collected. It was inaugurated on May 20, 1898 and also started to have the king's personal collections in his custody. From 1901, the Aquarium was under the supervision of the Ministry of Navy. The Aquarium covers two distinct areas, one where the heritage donated by King D. Carlos is exposed and the other where they are live species of fish and turtles, as well as a large number of number of embalmed water birds. It is a space that is visited with great pleasure and has a pedagogical presentation to mark. (Original) Situado em Lisboa é um dos mais antigos aquários do mundo. (Translated by Google) The place would be nicer if it had more maintenance and was cleaner. Many guardians do not clean their dogs' waste. It also suffers from little space. At night the entire garden is completely dark. It must be the only park in the county with no lighting. This is A SHAME for Cascais City Council. This municipality only sees Cascais, Estoril and places along the Marginal. For President Carlos Carreiras, everything else is "guettos" without importance. (Translated by Google) Luxurious zoo. A must-see with kids and more! Peacocks walk right along the alleys between tourists. Huge spacious and well-groomed aviaries, a rich variety of animals, there is an opportunity to ride the cable car and see everything from above, as we did and then identified the main places to visit. Also, if you familiarize yourself with the schedule in advance, you can get to the dolphin show absolutely free! There are food outlets, but we stocked up on food from home, many come to the zoo for the whole day. there is parking across the street from the zoo under the bridge - paid.

Absolutely loved Lisbon zoo, we visited twice in one week. A must when you visited the city, clean, fantastic enclosures, happy looking animals. I will definitely go back when we return. The monkeys put on a freestyle display after catching a pigion, nature is nature after all. Lucky we hadn't just eaten.

Impressive collection of animals and beautiful park. Animal welfare was a high priority, they looked well kept and had good spacious enclosures. The park is big and you can spend a good amount of time discovering everything they have to offer. If anything had to be pointed out to improve is that a dolphin show isn’t of this day and age anymore. It should be stopped.

We went two hours before closing, but I wish we’d given ourselves a little more time. The zoo is really comprehensive and the staff are friendly and helpful. The cable car took about half an hour and is definitely worth it! Be warned the food stands throughout the zoo might not be serving food when you go. We wanted to get burgers, but all they had available was Doritos.

Ah, the Lisbon Zoo, that verdant oasis in the heart of Portugal's capital, is a marvel of both conservation and entertainment. A grand day out, indeed, particularly if one is graced with the effervescent presence of children. From the aquatic ballet of the dolphins—so magnificently choreographed it brings a tear to the eye—to the majesty of the tigers, who roam their enclosures with a quiet dignity, the zoo unfurls its welcome mat most heartily for both the young and young at heart. Yet, it's not merely an exhibit; it becomes an interactive classroom for the inquisitive minds, a sprawling playground where the day's most crucial lessons are taught through curiosity and wonder. Parents and children alike can revel in this communal spirit of exploration and learning. Now, as for the act of picnicking, allow me a moment to extol its virtues. The lawns here are as pristine as they are welcoming. They provide an idyllic backdrop to a mid-day repast that transcends the mere act of eating. Lay down your blanket, unfasten your hamper, and let the surrounding tranquility wash over you as the children dart about, their laughter ringing through the air. You're afforded a blissful pause in an otherwise bustling day of zoological intrigue. So whether your quest is for education or simple outdoor leisure, the Lisbon Zoo offers an unparalleled tapestry of experiences. Here, family outings become co-adventures, and every moment—be it a dolphin's leap or a tiger's roar—becomes a stitch in a day-long narrative of shared experiences. Ah, what a splendid way to spend a day, wouldn't you agree? Oi

The dolphin show is amazing and is the best thing at the zoo! Cable cars look old-fashioned and not too safe but once you are on it, it's actually quite fun since you are able to see the animals without the fences. No shades though. Zoo size is decent but unfortunately quite dated and dirty (both smell and environment) - worst thing is the bug issue, we got so many mosquito bites during the visit.

The environment for the animals to settle in are very suitable for them. It has wide spaces to move around and plenty of fresh air for them to breathe in. Every animal has their own unique personality. One amusing part was the the baby rhino, it was adorable and enthusiastic and left us in a jolly amount of laughs .

Really lovely zoo to visit. You have the option to plan your visit, including all shows prior to attending, which we did, and we'd seen everything after six hours. Good location with the metro just next door at Sete Rios. Loads of options to eat outside of the zoo but still within the complex. Just make sure you get the re-entry stamp. There is a McDonald's, which is the only fast food chain on site, but we took a packed lunch, which meant we could keep going to get all animals seen to. It ended up being a fifteen thousand steps day, but it was fun. Also sad as animals are caged, but that is the concept of the zoo. My favourite was the white rhino. I bought my tickets at one of the self-service machines, and even though it did not print all the tickets, it was fine at the entry booth as they checked. Buying in advance saves you five per cent, which would be my only criticism, so I didn't bother as not big enough of a saving for my foreign card transaction.

This is a beautiful zoo with a large collection of animals. I love how spacious many of the enclosures are, and the animals seem very well cared for. The brochure you are handed on entry references that there is often what appears to be garbage in the enclosures, but it is actually placed intentionally. I guess it pays to read the brochure before writing a Google review. My only complaint is that some enclosures require a very long walk isolated from the others, only to find out the animals aren’t even on display that day. Being Lisbon, even in the zoo most paths are hills so this can feel unnecessary when a simple sign up ahead could help. As well, the only real food option besides ice cream is McDonalds - kind of feels like a wasted opportunity to feature local food. Overall though, a fantastic experience.

  • 4/5 Nelson R. 3 years ago on Google
The zoo is now operating somewhat partially but great to see that living conditions of the majority of the animals are in open space and with "features" that resembles their natural habitat. Some are still waiting to be move to their new accommodation sort of speak but great place to take the kids for a day out. Plenty of beverages placed in and out the place if one fancies grabbing a drink or snack.

Perfect, family has a great time. We came in a day when it was more than 30 degrees Celsius and because of so many trees in the park we could barely feel the heat. There are shadows everywhere. There is a chair lift that goes around the park which is a must. We went multiple times since there was no cueing. Animals are well taken care of, installations are very nice. Staff is super friendly as everywhere else in Portugal.

Amazing Zoo. An unexpected gem. We love zoos and try to visit one in every city we travel to, and Lisbon Zoo is truly one of the best. Siberian tigers, a family of gorillas, rare felines. A terrific reptilian area. Highly recommend!

I didnt expect much from the evening but my way led me to this marvelous place. From a busy street you enter into a world of its on. Right at the entrance theres a splendid Christmas tree that takes you back to the cozy winter nights with your family. A few more steps further theres a mcdonalds that reminds you that you live in a capitalist world. However, just a glance away there is Africa. A crocodile staring deeply into your soul and in its eyes you see that hes yearning for home. But if you listen closely you can hear him recite an ode to Lisbon. A place that anybody can call home

  • 4/5 Nawaf A. 4 years ago on Google
Overall, the zoo has an acceptable variety of animals. They have presentations (short shows) of pelicans, dolphins, etc. which are very good and the dolphins show is a must see, you really don't want to miss it. The cable car ride takes you around the zoo and gives you good views. The maps provided at the gate are not easy to follow and you have to have your own sense of direction to be able to go around. The icecream stands are well located and clean. The zoo is currently having some renovations and some of the areas are closed.

  • 5/5 Vitali B. 4 years ago on Google
Regardless of your age, it's a place you shouldn't miss if you come to Lisbon. The entry fee is steep, but well worth it - the animals have lots of space, amazing environment for each, with lots of greenery. There's entertainment for everyone, a few places to snack outside (you can return within the day even if you go out), and a few places where you can buy water, coffee etc inside, plus vending machines and restrooms. It has a small baby care building, very good for breastfeeding and diaper change :) It is a vibrant, modern and colorful place, a must see.

Nice little dog park recently put up. Though not being large it also benefits from the fact that it has close by a children's playground as well as a physical exercise area where one can do some exercises. Relatively calm at least for now.

This is a nice place to visit and I would seriously recommended it, however, the company running the business is just interested in money and not good values and ethics . During the pandemic, they fired employees with over 30 years working for them just to reduce their social responsibility. It s shameless that those companies don't care about communities but only about profit.

The Lisbon Zoo is Spectacular and Worth Every Second We loved the zoo, and chose to spend our anniversary at this wonderful establishment. It's not necessarily like a zoo to feel clean and welcoming, but we weren't surprised that the Lisbon zoo was the best zoo we've ever visited. Some of the highlights: ✅ It was clean and well kept. Bathrooms were spotless as well. At COVID times, this is essential. ✅ The entry fee was reasonable (can’t remember what we paid, but it wasn’t bad compared to US zoos). ✅ The animals seemed happy. I’m not even an animal person (which doesn’t help explain why I love zoos), so take this one with a grain of salt. ✅ The cable car over the zoo was sooo cool!! ✅ The overall zoo was super planned out and felt like the best botanical garden in Lisbon. It makes me want to go back just to walk around it once more! A few negatives and/or areas for improvement: ❌ It’s not a massive place, and we saw everything in under a few hours ❌ I didn’t like the pet cemetery. I’m sorry, but it was creepy and utterly sad. Overall, this is definitely a place I’d return and bring my kids (if I one day decide to have kids).

This zoo is amazing. All the animals are well treated, they have amazing spaces for them. For example, the lions were all raised on the zoo. All of them were born there. You have a lot of space to rest away from the sun. If you have kids, or love animals, you need to visit it

Amazing day! Some attractions were in maintenance but when the new spot for elephants and lions is ready the park will be even more amazing. Loved it! Brought back memories of my first visit as a child long time ago.

If you are visiting Lisbon you really should visit the Zoo. It has a nice animal selection. Even in COVID times just a few attractions are not available but you will be having lots of fun visiting the main routes. The view from the cable car is also nice to see at the highest point you can have a great view over parts of Lisbon.

(Translated by Google) We visited the zoo in February 2019. Admission is not entirely for a mouthful, although it is a smaller zoo. But it was nicely maintained and I personally agree with the local Mediterranean flora. Due to the visit out of season, we had the Zoo almost to ourselves most of the time, there were definitely no crowds like in Prague, which was very pleasant. Even from an aesthetic point of view, I liked it here (in general, however, I tend to evaluate the Zoo rather positively, maybe it's because I haven't come across any explicitly neglected ones yet). Additional service also good, the only trifle - beer was poured into glasses with a volume of 2 dcl, so the poor waiter quite ran :-). I don't see a single reason not to visit this Zoo, it was worth the higher entrance fee.

Nice place to relax and forget about everything another for 2-3 hours. Even at Saturday (November) was enough quite and few people. Good navigation, places to have a rest, cafes, shop, toilets, and yes, lovely animals, of course. Take camera with zoom. And be ready to walk outside all time, so wearing with forecast. Shame only is in November 2021 top cabine road was closed (guess was too windy).

What a zoo… One of the oldest in this part Of Europe. Before all, what I love about it is that they try to generate income by offering different services (pet grooming, pet care, and pet cemetery). Only thing I did mind is the price of the ticket. Four of us went in for somewhat less than 100€ and famous cable car was not even working.

  • 5/5 Naomi D. 2 years ago on Google
This place is so good! There is plenty to see and the cable cars are actually such a good addition, you can see animals from it that you wouldn't have seen otherwise (we saw leaopard/cheetah/camel from it) you just get a totally different view. I think I saw another review saying the dolphin show was "outdated" too - rubbish, I've never seen anything like it, absolutely amazing! Do not miss that if you go to the zoo, the show times were 11:00, 14:30 and 16:30. Plenty to do in the mean time if you miss one though.

  • 5/5 Charlotte G. 2 years ago on Google

It has good range of cute animals and the space for them to live there seems good and tidy. Very impressive dolphin shown. Would be better if there are more signs to guide you through the routes. Also, some of the bushes need a trim, sometime it's not possible for kids to see

  • 5/5 Kristi K. 11 months ago on Google
If you buy tickets online you get 5% discount. Zoo is super big, even has cable cars. It is all nicely decorated and it looks like animals are happy (unlike in some zoos). Their habitants are spacious. Lisbon Zoo is also actively working on breeding some animal species and sending them back in the nature. Which I think it is great.

  • 5/5 Bruna U. 11 months ago on Google
This zoo is a fun and educational place. There are different species of animals and they look well cared for. Throughout the zoo you can see information about the animals and their situation in nature (if their species are safe, in danger of extinction, etc) and that's good because one of the main goals of places like these should be to educate people. There's a cable car ride which is super fun because from up there you get to see many animals that are a little hidden from a ground perspective. You also get the view from the whole zoo and the city, that's super nice. You must exit the zoo to go to the restaurants that are located at the entrance (I think the only food inside is icecream) which is not a problem since you may come back at any moment. The food tasted really good.

A great way to spend the afternoon. The sun wasn't too harsh, so we got to see the animals step outside of the shade. The teleferique that runs over the zoo is a bonus, and gave us stunning views of Lisbon plus am overview of the zoo layout. We bought tickets online and walked straight in, although it wasn't busy at the ticketing station anyway. You can cover the entire area in about 3 hours. We arrived at 5 but by then all the shows were over so we didn't get to see the dolphin aquarium in action.

Nice zoo with plenty of animals to see. The dolphin show was very well choreographed, maybe the best we've seen. The site also has plenty of shade trees and small food stands thoughout. It even has additional restaurants at the entrance, including a McDonalds. The free cable line cart ride over the zoo was a added bonus for the kids.

Dolphin show and cable car ride over the zoo are worth the entry fee alone. We also visited the reptile enclosure which was good. Its a big place to walk around but there's plenty of stop off points with cafes and toilets to keep you going. Recommended, possibly the best zoo I've been to

Great zoo with beautiful grounds to walk around and explore. They have a standing gondola which gives you a great view of the zoo and city. There are many places to get drinks, ice cream and food. They even have a McDonald's if that's your thing. Watch out for the roaming peacocks they will want a bite of your sandwich or fries.

So many animals seen! That zoo looks truly taking care of the happiness of its guests. Every animal looks well fed, with some places adjusted to their needs (I’m not an animal expert tho, but it looked like) and we could see most of them. The configuration of the zoo makes it easy to visit and we especially liked the dolphins show which is very amazing.
