The is the most user friendly art museums I’ve been to in my life. The floor plan is superb so you don’t get lost. You are guided through a single path to make sure you view everything. Even in the basement where there is open floor plan there is numbered tapes and arrow on floor! Their brochures are excellent. They also explain art movements in details for lay persons. Not only that, their second floor houses collections from well known artists including Warhol. You don’t come here expecting a large body of work from famous artists that you find in Paris London and New York though there are plenty of them represented here. You will ask find will some wonderful work that stand on their own. Start from the top floor and work your way down. Expect to spend 90 minutes if not more. It’s vast inside.

Maybe one of the best museums I have ever seen. Cheap and big. Lots of art and installation. The building is lovely from the outside too. I recommend going here if you're in belem.

Very nice museum, I suggest buying Lisbon card if you plan to visit many sights of the city, in this way entrances to certain attractions are either free or with great discount. You can spend hours and hours a really huge number of exhibits on display.

I have been wanting to visit this museum for quite some time. Many interesting works. I spotted Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, Picasso, Jackson Pollock and more. Unfortunately my daughter with the art history degree was not able to join me on this trip so I took lots of pictures. Had never seen the work of Gerard Fromanger before. Loved it! There was also an exhibition of a pre WWII abandoned Jewish school in Slovakia complete with books including tge children's notebooks that were left behind and rediscovered.

It was one of the best museums of modern art I visited. Incredible large collection of art from the beginning of 1900s to early 2000s. The collection includes Picasso, Andy Warhol, Miro, and lots of great modern artists. Plan to enjoy the visit for at least 2 to 3 hours or half a day.

First of all I have to admit I don't understand art that much. But I feel quite comfortable after spending hours under the sun. And it's quite nice to get a bit rest in this artsy space and get a bit AC. Clean AC, several bar restaurant. It's 5 Euro entrance fee or 4 if you have Lisboa Card, but also if you are a tourist, you totally could skip this place if you don't have much time.

Excellent museum with a large variety of artworks from different well known international and local artists. The vast collection includes Picasso, Warhol, Moore, Dali and many others. Entrance was 5 Euros. I would allow at least 2 hours to get through all the exhibition spaces. If you are a fan of modern art, then this is a must visit.

Beautiful beautiful art museum! If you re interested in contemporary art this place is unbelievable. There are lots of creations and not just paintings. It’s really big and personally I have never seen so many colorful paintings all at once. Definitely one of the best museum I have ever visited :)

Museum with lovely modern architecture, very spacious with a good cheel area and a system of cafes and shops. The collection of contemporary art is unassuming, unremarkable. The new exhibition of the Portuguese conterporary artist is conceptually controversial. Being here, one would like to ask a question: did you become happier after seeing this art? I answered in the negative for myself.

One of the best museums in Portugal especially if you like art from 1900 to early 2000s. They have very descriptive texts for each section (art periods). Interesting selection and always some cool temporary exhibition.

World class museum ..outstanding collections beautifully and cleverly curated..Fantastic spaces very spacious and well designed . The quality and range of work across all modern art is simply superb..One of these put together experiences I have had the pleasure to explore and enjoy. Great value entry fee so much to see it’s worth revisiting many times. Lisbon is fortunate to have such a gifted organisation to curate and display work so skilfully and taste.. Congratulations 👏

On the second floor you can go through a hundred years of modern art in just three hours. Each art style is in its own room with good explanations also in English. The exhibition proceeds in order from the past to the present, you get the whole of modern art in one visit. The place is huge. On the -1 floor there are huge rooms for more difficult to define art and the scale is large. The definitions of space, art and interpretation are really put on test. Highly recommended.

Ticket is around 5€/person. We were having lots of fun there and enjoyed our time. We were right on time, there was a new opening exhibition. So we could frink outside then watched the artwork later. After taking a look of everything, we went to the last room, which we could draw and left our art in a cabinet. Very worthy to go here!

Free entrance on Saturday! Was extremely pleased to find Basquiat, Harring, Warhol, Yves Klein, even Picasso and so much more here. The gallery is massive but not overwhelming so you can still stuff in some other activities in your day. It is well situated as well in the area. Nothing not to love and definitely very worth a visit!

An interesting collection that boasts some Warhol, Dali, Picasso, and a plethora of contemporary work with a large pop art sub section. I found myself spending more time in the basement floor than the top floor that housed the more famous pieces. The top floor goes through the history of art in a chronological order while trying to put its evolution into context. The bottom floor, in my opinion, is more exploratory rather than illustrative or an art history narrative. The background and controversial history of the collector is also interesting! Nice museum. Will return!

World class collection of art big hitters from early modernism through to movements in the 90s. It was surprisingly big and takes some pacing. I would give yourself 4 hours to take your time and have breaks. The public spaces outside are really pleasing and the terrace is cool and breezy in the evening - perfect for a beer and relaxing. There was also another ticket for another space, which in my case was about architecture. Really good too. Overall an excellent art museum.

A wonderful museum, but we got when two floors were closed. Probably best to visit during the tourist season when everything is open. But we liked it, because it was raining outside and it was especially cozy and calm to walk around the exposition. The only problem is that the electric parking spaces are unusable due to the strange safety mechanisms on the poles, leaving no room for a car.

Excellent contemporary art gallery, which charts the timeline of contemporary art from the early 1900s to the end of the century through text and works by major artists. All across a substantial top floor. Also, additional works on the lower floors, with both permanent and temporary exhibits.

One of the (if not THE) best Modern Art museums in Portugal. Despite being a private collection, it is a very cheap experience compared to the value we get: modern pieces from Dali, Picasso, Twombly, Pollock, Warhol, and many many others less known artists from around the world. It is a wide and spacious museum, very visitor friendly, and despite all this it might end “at some point” since it depends on Portugal’s agreements with the owner…so be quick!

Worth a visit. I throughly enjoyed the permanent collection especially the 2nd tier artists, and early works of well known (Mark Rothko etc) and later works of some well known (Man Ray etc) and pieces that I had not seen before (Moholy-Nagy, Ed Kienholtz). Also the sculptural work by Julião Sarmento which I found quite moving although I don’t believe is part of the permanent collection.

This museum was renamed to "Contemporary art Museum". Tickets are cheap 5€ for adult and for students even cheaper. One floor is being renovated but other two are more than enough. Very interesting paintings, interesting info near each entrance to each section of exhibition. Would definitely visit once again

Visited during a rainy day. I was a bit drunk, best mood to appreciate art. Collection is outstanding, rich and well placed, and I also developed a fetish for the girls sitting on the stools that make sure people behave. I behaved. 5⭐ out of 5, would repeat the experience

A magnificent cultural center in a modern Oriental style and with a really good collection of contemporary art inside. It's not too rich, there are only few items of well-known artists like Picasso or Mondrian, but it's very well structured and covers the whole XX century, with clearly segmented styles and movements. Don't spend extra money on the complete ticket including access to Garagem Sul unless you know exactly what are you looking for there - it has very specific temporary exhibitions on display.

One of the best galleries I've been to. Some great pieces and some from artists new to me but that I really enjoyed. Only 5 euros for adults and our 12 year old was 2.50.

Probably my favourite collection in Lisbon. They have a wide arrange of artists, both national and international that is astonishing. You can stay there 2h+ easily and even grab food and coffee in the premises. Also free on Sundays for students and residents.

Excellent museum with a lot of interesting artworks. I truly enjoyed it! Definitely go there and expect to spend at least 1.5 hours. I would recommend adding a bit of text about most prominent works or an audio guide. The price was 10 euros and absolutely worth it. No lines on Sunday.

Great collection and organised by time period. Plus changing expositions. Plus not overrun when I visited. Would go back again for sure when in Lisbon

The museum has temporary exhibitions and a permanent collection that takes you through modern art, its styles, movements and trends. A nice collection of works. However, like most museums, it is a classic one-dimensional and non-interactive media concept.

  • 4/5 Steven N. 6 months ago on Google • 26 reviews
The museum itself had an amazing compilation of Modern Art from different eras and the description of each era made it easy to try and understand what the artist was attempting. However, the staff was unclear about the closing time and we were made to leave abruptly 10 minutes before it closed even though some staff had told us we still had 10 minutes just moments prior. Because of this, we weren't able to complete our viewing as we allocated the last 10 minutes to a specific room and was denied. Make sure to be clear with them if you're short on time.

Very large collection of contemporary and modern art. The price of admission (5 euros) is well worth it. I especially enjoyed the current exhibition (Luminous Matter) and the permanent collection from 1960 to the present day. Every room/ art-style is well explained and you can easily spend hours here. In addition to the museum itself, the building/ cultural center that it is located in is also worth exploring.

The collection is quite sizeable and well-organized. It covers a lot of artistic movements and each movement is well explained. You can easily spend 3 hours there. I didn't reserve enough time for my visit and regret it immensely. Will definitely come back the next time.

Amazing museum! It has a permanent exhibition and also temporary exhibitions, all of contemporary art. All of them are great! It's a very big museum, count on a couple of hours to see everything. The price is quite cheap, 5 euros, and on Saturdays it's free. Definitely a place to visit.

Astounding collection of modern and contemporary art. I ditched the overcrowded Monastery for this visit and I am glad I did! The museum itself is gorgeous and the expography is impecable. Not to be missed.

Mixed bag. It was nice to escape the heat and see some art. Architecturally, the Museu Colecao Berardo doesn't seem fit for presenting modern art. Odd ceiling heights, harsh lighting and a very distracting floor pattern makes it feel like a temporary setup. There are some nice pieces of course, but it doesn't take long to cover it all. There are also much better value entrance fees elsewhere.

I've been collecting art for 20 years and been in literally hundreds of art museums around that world. For 5 euros (an absolute bargain if you ask me), you can get many hours of pleasure in this exquisite presentation. Well laid out, spacious and with brilliant explanations and categories of art movements. I commend the curators for such a delightful art offering. Stef Juncker, Cape Town

There are great artworks in the museum collection. To name few Duchamp, Moholy-Nagy, Picasso, Mondrian, Dali, Miro, Pollock and so on. It may take at least 2 hours to have a quick tour. The museum shop is extremely expensive and their credit card payment option was unavailable.

I've never been a fan of contemporary art, but I've been there once heavily hungover and it was an unforgettable experience. Being alone in the deserted underground area, with all the strange and mesmerizing art works created a strangely oppressive and unsettling atmosphere. It was an out-of-this-world experience, that's for sure! Definitely worth going

One of the best art museums I’ve ever been to. Incredible value. We ran out of time to see everything. If you enjoy contemporary art, allocate at least half a day to this spot. Absolutely amazing.

What a great museum! As well as having works by loads of the big names, what really stood out to me was the quality of explanation. The wall text was fantastically written to take you on the journey through modern art and explain the relevance of all the pieces they had. Definitely don’t miss downstairs, although it looks like a kids education area at first glance they have statues by the likes of Kieth Haring so worth a visit in my eyes

Great place. The museum has a great collection of modern art. It felt like a trip to the past while walking in an art history class about modern art movements. If you like art museums, this museum is for you.
