This
is
a
beautiful
public
space
with
wonderful
views
over
the
Tagus
river
and
the
houses
below,
specially
so
at
sunset.
Although
the
official
name
of
this
space
is
Jardim/Miradouro
de
Santa
Catarina,
many
call
it
Adamastor,
after
the
statue
of
the
sea
monster
that
is
said
to
have
tormented
the
Cape
of
Good
Hope.
The
Jardim
of
Santa
da
Catarina
includes
a
small
tree
shaded
area
with
a
kiosk
and
a
bare
stone
paved
area
around
the
statue
of
Adamastor
and
facing
south.
Big
stone
blocks
contain
the
slope
and
serve
as
sitting
space.
The
recent
design
of
the
space
is
the
result
of
a
project
from
2013
by
Landscape
office
PROAP,
that
aimed
at
solving
the
several
issues
of
rundown
19c
design:
a
structurally
fragile
and
tall
fence,
the
difficult
maintenance
of
the
portuguese
calçada,
and
the
over
stepping
on
the
grass
and
green
areas
for
lack
of
sitting
places
which
created
a
dusty
environment.
This
design
change
enraged
some
Lisboners
who,
with
time,
got
used
to
the
new
design.
CCTV
cameras
were
also
added
for
the
sake
of
safety.
The
crowds
that
one
finds
here
are
very
bohemian,
with
music
being
played
during
the
day,
and
people
lingering,
drinking
and
chatting
throughout
the
night.
There
are
also
other
coffee
options
nearby
as
alternative
to
the
crowded
kiosk.
The
surrounding
palaces
and
houses,
the
unexpected
spectacular
view
and
the
silence
of
cars
that
this
garden/belvedere
offers
makes
this
a
very
unique
and
special
place
to
visit
in
Lisbon.
