This monument stands in tribute to members of the Portuguese army who died during the Overseas War of 1961 to 1974. The monument consists of a triangular sculpture formed by two large black and white pillars to form an inverted V shape, over an eternal flame. Soldiers (look like Naval uniforms) stand guard over the flame and if you time it right, there's a changing of the guards, roughly on the hour.

Commemorate what! Countless living lives were taken by these rulers.we need human peace, not war! The monument is beautiful.

Less crowded than the Belem tower. This is a strong stately monument and worth a walk by. You won't spend a ton of time admiring, but it's pretty cool especially if you can catch it at the right time when the sun is setting!

Worthy to stop by the monument. You could feel the respect for all veterans who served for the country! If you get there around sunset time, you could see a daily ceremony by young portuguese soldiers.

Beautiful monument, the structure amd the water are a beautiful combination. There are also two soldiers guarding the monument. The wall of behind the structure has written down the names of all the fallen soldiers.

Artistic monument close to Belem Tower. We were lucky enough to be there when the Guards were doing the exchange and that made the experience more interesting.

The monument pays tribute to over 9,000 Portuguese soldiers that lost their lives fighting in several colonial conflicts, or rather wars, that the crumbling Portuguese empire was engaged in for over 12 years, from 1961 to 1974. Those who lived in the 1970s must remember the news coming from Mozambique or Angola at the time. By the early 1960s and even more so in the 1970s all European colonial powers (think England and France) got out of the colonial business with varying degree of bloodshed involved. Not so Portugal, that due to its dictatorship regime just couldn't let its overseas, all of them African, possessions go. The loss of human lives was one of the main reasons of the mass immigration from Portugal at the time and the ultimate overthrow of the regime by the junior officers in April 1974. The name of each soldier and officer who died fighting their Empire's colonial wars is engraved in the walls surrounding the central triangular stella. The guard is positioned in front of the memorial and the eternal flame is in the background. Definitely worth your time, if not as a dedicated visit, but surely as a part of your Belem tour.

(Translated by Google) The monument is dedicated to the soldiers who died during the overseas war between 1961 and 1974. On the wall behind the monument are the names of the 9,000 soldiers who died on the African continent. In front of the wall, there is a shallow lake in its center, the eternal flames, in the memory of the mourners. Over the flames are two huge corner pillars. To the right and left there are 2 guard soldiers of the monument. It was nice experience. There could be more about it but the cars planes, helicopters and the weapons compensated for the bit plain part. The bottom part of the museum is good at least on the trenches one. It's possible to get a good perspective of what it might have been and what it was. The boys loved it though. 🔫
