Extraordinary. Each carriage is a mind blowing piece of art. Very well preserved exhibits, displayed in large halls with ability to go around almost all carriages to see plenty of details. Photos don’t do justice - the real life scale and attention to details is something you need to experience for yourself. Information for each carriage displayed in English and Portuguese. Easy to access and move around. It took us about 2 hours to enjoy the museum. Ticket counter offers various discounts. Only thing to bear in mind - gift shop closes at 5.30pm and even being a few minutes late, they did not let us in.

Amazing museum hosting many carriages from Portugal’s Monarchs. Take some time to understand the construction of them, using wood and leather belts to give more comfort to passengers. Some came from France and UK. Must visit! After the visit, go around the building and see from some glass windows the work of some restorers. I included some pictures of this.

It is what it is - so if carriages/horses are your thing; then you will love it. Sign in with the Lisbon Card is using the one touch terminal (slows everything down). And they force you to check your bags. You can get close to the carriages and they have several unique ones like “postal” and “prisoner transport”.

This place is AWESOME!!! so much history here. The coaches are so ornate, so varied. All of the stories and accessories. The private experience was exceptional. The only downside I can think of was that the museum was extremely hot.

The Museum of Coach in Lisbon offers a captivating journey through history with its impressive collection of vintage carriages. Rich exhibits and well-preserved artifacts make it a must-visit for history enthusiasts. Engaging and informative, it provides a unique glimpse into the transportation of the past.

Super interesting visit to perceive the evolution of the carriages through time. Don’t miss the second floor. Access is not well signed but security is happy to help in directing visitors.

Interesting place to visit if you want to know more about all types of carriages from the most opulent to the simplest one. The museum’ architecture is quite interesting. An 1,5 hour to visit is more than enough time if you are not passionate about the subject but you will learn a few things.

Really enjoyed this museum. For one thing, it’s light traffic compared to some of the other attractions in the Belem area so got to enjoy it in peace. Pretty fascinating to see the ornate carriages up close vs on TV. There are actually 2 coach museums across the street from each other. The main one is the modern white building though it doesn’t have a big sign. The other one is much smaller in a old building and has a sign on the front. I went to both but the bigger exhibit in the white building is better.

We were casually scooting around and found this gem!! It was so cool to see all of the interesting carriages and learn about their history. It wasn't crowded so we could stroll as we pleased.

This is not somewhere I would normally go, but because we were in the area and it was included on the Lisboa card, we went. It's actually pretty interesting and the coaches are very impressive, although after a while you get a bit of a lessening return on seeing coach after coach after coach. Ample toilets on site. Entrance is opposite the ticket booth (it isn't readily apparent). Entrance is also not all that friendly looking.

We visited the Coach Museum without any expectations and the overall experience was great. The exhibited objects are very well preserved and make an awesome connection to Portugal’s history. I would have liked to see more technical information though but the overall experience was great.

When I landed in Lisbon I didn’t know there was a national coach museum. I heard positive feedbacks about it so I decided to go. Very nice exposition, I really enjoyed. I would have loved to learn more about ‘why’ there is such a big museum in Lisbon related to coaches but the exposition itself is very interesting. It takes less than 1 hour to visit .

This is an awesome place. Something absolutely new for me. I thought coach is something boring, but it will be interesting for kinds and adults. Besides being a transport for nobles, coaches were a common utility transport means.

Prior to visiting Lisbon, all my friends insisted I visit Museum of Coaches. I found this advice puzzling, to put it mildly. Until I actually visited the museum. It is absolutely facinating. The coaches are beautifully and meticulously restored; abundant plaques and interactive touch screen displays immerse you into the intricate nuances of Portuguese and European history. Each and every couch is a sight to behold and remember! Allow yourself at least 2-2,5 hours to soak in the experience.

Lovely unique museum. You have to see the historic carriages to believe how ornate and intricately carved they are. Expect to spend 1-2 hours. Exhibit information is posted in Portuguese and English.

A fascinating museum of coaches that go from extravagant century old coaches used by former rulers and royalty through to more modern commercialised ones in more recent centuries. If you haven't seen these types of coaches in person before, it's quite amazing to see them in real life in all their former glory. The detailing on some of the royal coaches is something to behold and appreciate. There's usually no line to enter, and the museum is free to enter with a tap of the Lisboa card.

Museum of Coaches, Belem Portugal: Belem is a head spin for a day trip. The long summer queues means a pear-shaped itinerary. We only had 45 minutes for Museum of Coaches – or 1 level of exhibits. It was truly baffling with how transportation was like for royals and a good reality pinch of how lucky we are to live in modern times where wheels are fast ands furious. The coaches evolve and are fascinating to see how art, creativity go hand in hand with coaches. #eatstylishtravelstylish

€8 or free with Lisboa card. ( Lisboa card is really good purchase. €21 /24 hr includes many free access entries to Belem area attractions. Really worth it. I highly recommend start your timer in early afternoon because the you can return and come back next day morning instead of rushing all in one day) Gorgeous and fabulous 17-19 century coaches of many styles, lux and purposes were on display at second floor of coach museum. Inside, viewing the coaches was like a kid looking at candies. They were mostly opulent and super delux that some simply put my ideas of coaches to next level. Unfortunately I only had less than one hour on site. I love reading the details and stories of each coach and learn its functions. But the staff kept on coming to me to remind me that the museum was closing in 45 min… 30 mins… 25 min.. 23 mins….. just on and on. Really frustrating and annoying as I clearly still had more than 40 mins before closing time. I don’t understand because the museum was not big and give me 5 mins, I will walk from one end to another. In brief magnificent collection is coaches. Really lovely and beautiful!!

What an interesting place to visit. Never been to anywhere quite like this before. Originally the coach museum was opened by Queen Amélie in 1905 and the oldest coach in the museum is from the 16th century! Definitely worth a visit for anyone coming to Lisbon. Entry is 8€ for an adult, cheaper for concessions.

Very nice museum. There a place where you find a lot of interesting coaches! The money worth visiting the museum. It's a must if you are in Lisbon. You need max 2 hours for visiting but If you are in a rush you can doi it in one hour. The main station is not far, Cais do Sodre. Have a grea time here.

We visited at the recommendation of a friend and were unexpectedly surprised at how much we enjoyed it. The coaches were impressive to see and we loved reading all the information and history for each one, as well as seeing how the styles developed over the years. It only took us about an hour to walk around the whole space, but the carriages were really ornate and beautiful!

  • 3/5 Walter P. 2 months ago on Google • 44 reviews New
The coaches were really cool, with incredible and intricate designs. It's also a unique premise in general, as you really don't see a lot of attention dedicated to coaches. However, for as amazing as the designs of those were, the museum itself was disappointingly barren and boring. Still worth seeing if you're in Belém, but maybe spring for the other, older museum not too far away. They should have one entry fee instead of being separate, though.

A new, more spacious building, allows visitors to see up close the most beautiful and intricately detailed coaches of Portugal's Royal family, political and church leaders and Noble families. A must see to take back in time.

It is an amazing museum. You can go around the world but you will definitely not get across a carriage museum on every corner. Moreso this is a stunning one with old royal carriages from the 18th and 19th century. It is very interesting to see how fancy, how decorated they were, one being more amazing than the other. It is an absolute must see and the entrance fee is so reasonable that I'm very glad for deciding to check it out. Do not even think, just go and visit and you will see something so unique that you might not encounter anywhere else.

A museum unlike anything we’ve experienced. Really cool to see the history of coaches and sedan chairs, as pretentious as it all was. Not sure what is going on with the building, it could be a modern piece in and of itself. Very cold lighting, feels unfinished, and unfriendly. Could be displayed in the SF MOMA. Coupled with the descriptions of coaches being on the floor, makes for a strange, distant experience very unlike their previous museum location.

Well designed museum, wide range of well maintained carrigaes or royal carts of you will. And a few other modules of motor and car design as well. On the second floor, a full history detials for the portoges monroches era and timeline of the monroach, how long each king tenure. A most visit museum in Lisbon.

This is a unique opportunity to see the evolution of horse-drawn carriages over a few centuries. The intricate detail of the wood carving is amazing. The explanations serve as a history lesson about some of the monarchs of Europe as well as coach construction. Accompanying displays of clothing and equipment in use provides a look back in time. The richly appointed uniforms are a sight to behold. You can almost feel the pomp and circumstance. While a bit on the quirky side, it is a once in a lifetime experience. The only glitch was the credit card reader being inoperable.

As we didn't want to wait in the queues for the Belem tower and the monastery we visited this place which is nearby and also free with the Lisboa card. Very interesting carriages. Worth a visit

I was a bit skeptical but on a cold winter afternoon I made my way to the museum. And I was in for a royal treat. Interesting stories from the history of Portugal but also the story of how the coach became the more comfortable berlina coach, there was a convertible model and even a "limo"...the car did not invent much I must say. After you are finished with the visit in the modern building head over to the old part of the museum(using the same ticket) which was the royal riding arena for games. The king and the nobles would sit in the gallery while the noblemen would exhibit their skills. The very ornate ceiling and the story of the games will definitely entertain you.

Great exhibition of royal coaches and vehicles dating back to the 16th, 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries, along with a wide assortment of artefacts, weapons and uniforms of the day that let you take in the history and the politics of the day in all their lavish excess. Booking is fast and easy, and the space lay out and arrangement make it cosy and easy for the visitor to wander around and enjoy the exhibits on display and the art rooms. Highly recommended upon your visit to Lisbon.

READ THIS. Only giving 2 stars for the exhibition and collection, because the personal is very rude and unprofessional. If you want the guide, don't visit the museum on the morning, you can only get the guide on the shop by the price of 8 euros. I wanted te guide, but they told us that the only way of getting this was in their shop, that was closed during work schedule, so you can't even have a free and small guide. I really wanted the guide and a book with more information about their carraiges, but the personal is not interested in working. They have suficient personal but doesn't want to work on shop. The security girl wasn't even doing her job, she was with the phone all the time and didn't let us make a claim, laughing of us and then cutting our word when we wanted to talk with the guy that sells he tickets. The elevator doesn't work, they won't tell you until you ask them. They are rude and slow. I recommend you to go in the afternoon starting on 3 pm, cause they will make excuses about everything. THE COLLECTION DESERVE THE VISIT NOT THE PERSONAL OF THE MUSEUM.

Where else will you find a museum that showcases carriages of kings? I was very very impressed with the whole collection! A must visit if you were ever entertained by European history. There is some parking available, the whole tour might take 1-1,5 hours. At the end of the tour you can take a horse carriage roundtrip in the neighborhoods of the museum (this one is 5eu/person)
