It was a magnificent site and I was appalled to see this “church with no roof “ which is still so beautiful and grand. It’s amazing that even after about 260 years and 2 earth quakes and tsunami, these walls and arches are still standing on the ground. The museum is amazing as well and exhibits are very impressive. I believe this is one of must see site in Lisbon. Strongly recommended.

The convent is very impressive and walking around there is lots to see. The engraved stonework around the sides to the stone window frames. It was fairly busy but seemed peaceful. When toy go to the far end into the building you see statues and decorated walls. On the floor are glass platforms and you see steps and passages which unfortunately are closed off

This is a small, but interesting museum. Due to the fact that its located in a ruined medieval convent it feels somehow more authentic. Fairly cheap price of admission, but there is not so much to see that you'd wanna be there for more than an hour, tops. Still, charming and vaguely impressive.

The most fascinating part of this cultural spot is the story behind it, all you see in this pictures are the parts that survived a fire. Is incredible how the structure remained intact. Also has a museum where you can explore even fossils.

Had a interesting visit learning and discovering history. We went for the Lisbon under stars light show and it was great. Little bit too crowded and could have had a bit more details. Ruins itself is pretty simple and fast to observe, but overall a good visit.

This convent is located in a beautiful area of Lisbon and so worth a visit, even if you don't go in. They close early so the evening I was there I didn't go inside, but I believe it's only €5 and after seeing the pictures of the inside on the other reviews, I figured it wasn't worth making a special trip back. But I'm sharing pictures of the area. Lots of places to eat and this is a very social area of town. If you walk around behind the convent there's amazing views of the adjacent neighborhood and historical cobblestone everywhere. It's quite fascinating to see the various "layers" of elevation between neighborhoods. Lisbon is either an architectural dream or nightmare, depending on how you look at it. But for a tourist it's a fascinating place to see, visit and experience. Older structures like this convent area critical component of the city's personality and charm. 🙏🏻

Found a lady here doing some fine sketches of exposed items. 🤩 They have nice historic collection and some modern art, that don't fit in this collection. Seen some nice asian whishing to learn about european christian art.👍⚘️ Security guy at the entry was although not polite.

A beautiful standing witness to the 1755 earthquake. Impressive architecture. Chambers of history going back to the BC. Entry fee is 5Euro. A quick tour, not a big convent/museum. Can also enjoy the star at the night show.

This is really amazing. It's basically ruins of a convent after the famous 1755 earthquake. Inside is the floor and part of the roof structure along with some art pieces. A few rooms remain as well as some of the decorative pieces. They've also got a film playing in one of the rooms to give you some of the history. The Lisboa cad gives you a partial discount for entry.

An attraction that has been extremely under estimated! I love this museum so much. It is not big, but it is telling you a very interesting story about the past, about its history in Lisbon. The entrance ticket is cheap but extremely valuable. There were some highlights of my time here - first of all I met the mascot, I couldn't remember how long I played with him. He is very cute and friendly and clingy with me!! Second I was amazed by the 3D movie they made for this museum. It is a "must-see" of this place! It is within the indoor display area but on the left side of the entrance. Do not miss the short movie, do not skip the movie, make sure you watch it full (it is rolling) with a 3min ish break in between. The movie was made in 2 languages and mixed spoke (Portuguese then English). The story was so interesting that you would fall into it easily. The special effect was made to fit the actual wall in the room. At the end of the movie, you can even see the mascot walking through on the screen. Slow down, take some time, Carmo Convent is definitely worthy of visiting.

Adult ticket €5 and student €4. You will enter in a magical place with Roman Gothic Ruins from 1755. There was a museum inside where it was forbidden to take picture. Carlota the cat is a nice addition in the attraction. There was a nice video show about the history of the church. The restroom was nice and clean.

The Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a former Catholic convent located in the civil parish of Santa Maria Maior, municipality of Lisbon, Portugal. The medieval convent was ruined during the sequence of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, and the destroyed Gothic Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on the southern facade of the convent is the main trace of the great earthquake still visible in the old city. The Carmo Convent and its Church were built between 1389 and 1423 in the plain Gothic style typical for the mendicant religious orders. It is located in front of a quiet square -Carmo Square, very close to the Santa Justa Lift.

This museum is totally worth the price of admission which I believe was five euros. My wife and I had plenty of photo opportunities outside (courtyard with remnants of where the church was destroyed. The inside was much more museum like and had interesting displays including pretty graphic well preserved mummies. The culmination was a video in the chapel which outlined the history of the convent beautifully. Worth the visit.

We enjoyed our visit to the ruins and the museum. The preserved ruins with interesting stonework is a great start as you stand beneath the remains of the vault that collapsed in the great earthquake of 1755. The museum has many interesting artifacts along with a short film about the history of the convent. Afterward we strolled around back of the ruins and climbing just a few steps we found ourselves at the top of the Santa Justa elevator that many wait in long lines to enter.

Truly impressive structure. Together with the museum and its collection, a great example of Lisbon’s history. Renovation works were taking place when we visited (July 2023). Ticket price relatively cheap (EUR 5).

It is so amazing to walk through history. They are doing some repairs to the structure and the informative video/light show of the history was very cool. For me one of the most interesting sights in Lisbon. The ruins themselves are well worth the entrance fee and after that you'll be able to spend some time in the museum with several interesting exhibits, besides others the two well-known mummies.

This historic building shows visitors the power of the 1755 earthquake. The Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was founded in 1389 and the church was constructed between 1389 and 1423. The church sustained heavy damage after the earthquake and much of it remains unrestored, making this one of the most unique churches to visit in Portugal. The Gothic arches still stand but the roof was never rebuilt.

Very large convent in scale, with grand columns towering above you as you look up. Amazing to think how grand in stature this would have been. It's going through a big renovation project, which will help restore it to some former glory. Nice displays inside, with very detailed descriptions.

Very unique look because of the earthquake as well as some super cool stuff in the Archaeological Museum part... Very worthwhile if you're in the area, though the modern art installations were stupid and looked more like garbage than art. It's saved, in the end, by the cat that lives in the gift shop though.

We read about this church and were curious so we walked up the hill to determine if we would want to go inside. We paid the 5 Euro (seniors) and went in. At first you think it’s just going to be the empty, open air remainders of the church but at the opposite end is a museum that was very engaging with a top notch film in a theater-like room with comfy chairs. We both agreed that it was well worth the 5 euros.

(Translated by Google) They are one of the main of the catastrophe that was the earthquake of 1755, in Lisbon. The Carmo Ruins ... are what remains of the Church of the Carmo Convent, founded in 1389 by D. Nuno Alvares Pereira. Belonging to the friars of the Order of the Carmelites, and D. donated his property to the convent and entered it as a religious. It was the main Gothic church in the capital, having the earthquake and fires destroyed the church and its stuffing. Work began on reconstruction, in the reign of D. Maria I, being interrupted in 1834 with the extinction of religious orders. In the mid-nineteenth century it was to keep as they were, since it was the taste for medieval ruins and monuments. They continue to be today one of the symbols of Lisbon, attracting many visitors. The convent is since 1836 military installation, being soothes of the National Republican Guard. a church body and choir, whose roof resisted the earthquake, has been requalified and works as Archaeological Museum. A very cool experience to be inside these ruins and look up through the arches. It's not a very big exhibit and can get crowded so if you're able to be there right at opening that makes the experience go better. Be sure to go to the top of the Santa Justa Lift and look out and across to the convent. This is free and you are able to go out on the platform without any cost and see some spectacular views.

The novices have not yet taken the vow of silence and sell the extremely yummy treats for the convent. If you like almonds this is a place you should not miss. Make sure to have some of the local currency on hand to buy the amazing baked goods that they sell. We also found out that the bars were installed to keep the rowdy school boys from naughtiness.

This is a fantastic site to visit. It was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake that devastated much of Lisbon and was only partially restored. You can visit the outside for free, but entry is very cheap and definitely worth paying. There is much history collected and displayed here, though curiously, not all of it relates to Lisbon or even Portugal. Still, for the price, it's worth it to have a look inside. Clean bathrooms are available inside. We walked by several times and there was always street vendors selling their wares next the Convent (jewelery, paintings, etc.), so other than the convent itself, there's lots to see. There are also many local eateries very close, and it's also within walking distance of many other attractions and shops.

Visited in June before borders were open to tourists and on a week day, so I had the place to myself, and it was lovely. The remnants of the building are really cool and massive, but I also enjoyed looking at the artifacts in the chapel museum area. I especially liked the azulejos depictions of the passion of the Christ. This is a great peaceful site to pass some time. Totally worth the €5 to me.

Ticket charge is €5 ( discount for Lisboa card) and Mask & Corona Green Pass mandatory. The Convent recreated after the earth quake in 1755. Most of the architecture dates back to the 1300s, but Manueline (Portuguese Gothic) windows and other details were added later, in the 16th and 18th centuries. Egyptian mummies, 3500BC sculptures, Siva linga are available To the right of the convent is a gate leading to the Santa Justa Elevator and Terraços do Carmo, terraces now occupied by an open-air café and bar, offering a view of the castle and over Rossio Square.

This was a fantastic Gem hidden in the heart of Lisbon. We were just walking around the city streets scouting a place for Dinner when we found it. Again, this is another place where it is mainly a self guided tour. But there was fantastic history to see in here. These are such valuable pieces of History that need to be cherished and cared for. A MUST see if visiting Lisbon in my opinion.

It has an archaeology museum inside, very cool and so much to see. There are a total of three mummies inside two of which are children and fully visible, if you are sensitive to that or are travelling with children I would be vary of that. Otherwise amazing experience, the open space area is also very nice to take pictures in. You can check the tickets on the website I believe, I found the price reasonable for such an experience.

Another must-see historical site in Lisbon. These ruins are of a convent that was destroyed in the 18th century earthquake. While restoration work is done today, after the quake, the ruins were left as a reminder to the city of what had been lost. The ruins are impressive, with an excellent museum on site. I recommend getting to the convent early in the morning to avoid the crowds. Oh, and enjoy the convent cat who is always available for photos.

very interesting and unique place. if you visit, don't skip the animated story of the convent, which explains all the facts you need to know about this place both in portuguese and in english. we went in the middle of the day, and despite it being august 2020 (covid usually means longer queues), we were able to go straight in and visit without any crowds. also, we saw a kitten. that's a plus in my book.

I went to see the show Lisbon under stars, which was absolutely magnificent BUT the security guy ( 2 of them actually) treated me and my friends so bad, telling us to leave like we were dogs inside a meat house. It makes me so sad to be a tourist and to hear the beautiful story of Lisbon and suddenly be treated really bad afterwards. Please please take a look on the way those guys are treating people. It's really not OK. I'm so disappointed.

(Translated by Google) It is currently the Archaeological Museum of the city. But the Convento Do Carmo is an old Gothic building that, like many other things in Lisbon, was seriously affected by the earthquake of 1755. The entrance fee is € 5/4. Although, once inside the space is smaller than it seems from the outside, see the semi-ruined nave, with the arches, the stone, the archaeological remains ... And with the sun entering through the recesses of the building, with the peace that you breathe in there, it is one of the things about Lisbon that is worth not missing.

Amazing architecture. Surprised to see Egyptian mummies there but interesting. Good watch for the price of €5 for adult. I’m not a history geek so the museum part wasn’t so much of fun for me but the architecture was good enough for me.

  • 5/5 Bistra I. 2 years ago on Google
Wow, that was such a pleasant surprise! Magical building and a very interesting archaeological collection including an Egyptian sarcophagus with a mummy and two Peruvian mummies. The square in front has several very cute cafes so it also makes a nice break.

Lovely little museum in the ruins of a church. You can do it in less than an hour and it’s great to poke around. The video is good, it regularly runs so even if you join halfway wait 2 minutes and it starts again. The cat is a charming addition 😻

I loved it! The ruins stand magnificent and you can also see beautiful things in the museum. One more thing I loved about it is the square in front of it, where you can have a coffee or an aperitivo while listening to street musicians.. This place was one of my favorites in Lisbon❤️

The space is moving, being a ruin and archeology site itself. It is beautiful! The undertaking to attempt to collect and catalog arch. pieces of history is ambitious and a bit overwhelming. There does not seem to be an order to it. But it is still interesting and worth a visit.

I think this was my favorite experience in Lisbon. Absolutely worth the 5 eur. we found just a small queue ( Monday at 14:00). The architecture is amazing and very peculiar but it doesn’t stop there. There is a small bit pretty museum included in the visit that space from Paleolithic age to the last century. I suggest you at the end of the museum visit to enjoy the light show in the last room ( in English and Portuguese ).

Lots of great history to take in. Minor restoration on-going, but it isn't a big deal. The only distraction was Instagram ladies trying to make a sacred site into a sexy photo shoot ( problem throughout Lisbon )

  • 4/5 Ruth B. 3 months ago on Google New
Ruins of a convent, preserved from further deterioration. Clearly a beautifully built building. Also a small range of artefacts on display to view. Part of the building was under restoration during our visit, so it was clear how the small fee was being used.
