This museum is my favourite in Lisbon, exhibiting artefacts from the stone-age to the present. There are interesting displays of all periods (don’t forget to pull out the drawers beneath displays), an excellent and comprehensive collection of city paintings, beautiful tiles, an intricate model of the city and a lovely garden which includes a café and an exhibition space for contemporary Portuguese artists. All well worth the visit. But the most interesting area is the kitchen and the tiles which show a portrait of an eighteenth century slave cook. In the first half of the eighteenth century there were 150,000 residents in Lisbon of which 22,500 were slaves, 15% of the population, and this woman was one of them. Who was she, this cook? What is she thinking? She’s not looking at the fish she’s scaling but looks out and away. She seems lost in a reverie of memory - of longing, of loss. Astonishingly, her portrait has sailed through time and now graces the kitchen wall of Palacio Pimenta, the Lisbon Museum. the information beside her states - “The tile panel shows a black woman, in all probability a slave, cleaning several fish… the panel was found in a building near Martim-Moniz Square on the inner wall of a chimney though it is evident this was not its original location.” Apart from these bald statements of the panel’s origin we know nothing about the portrait but the tiles were placed in the kitchen when it was restored in 1984. I can only guess this is an acknowledgement to the deep roots of slavery in this city, and the significant role captive and free African-Portuguese played in building Lisbon. There is little to say it but I can only hope that is why she is placed there. It is an astonishing memorial that deserves attention.

A good and relatively small museum to visit if you want to learn about the history of Lisbon. It’s well structured and covers Paleolithic, Neolithic, Copper Age, Bronze Age, Romans, Islam, Medieval times and finally 18 century. It’s divided by each mentioned period and there is a short film and text available as you enter to each area to teach you more. Staff were lovely. Entrance ticket costed 3€ per person. It’s a good place to start your discovery of Lisbon as it will give you a good historical background of it. Wish it would be bigger and could offer more artifacts.

This was a cool museum with some great artifacts. We liked learning more about Lisbon history, from prehistoric time to the moorish occupation to the roaring 20s! But the real star was the gorgeous gardens. It was quite hot when we went, but we spent more time in the outdoor area, with the peacocks and eucalyptus trees, than we did inside!

(Translated by Google) One of the many museums that deserves a mandatory visit, is the museum of the city of Lisbon installed in the Pimenta palace, a manor house from the 18th century, where the history of Lisbon is presented to us from its occupation, until the beginning of the 20th century through of artistic iconography, with particular emphasis on certain important historical events, namely, the 1755 earthquake and the reconstruction of the lower pombaline. In addition to the museum, this palace has two beautiful gardens, one dedicated to the artist Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, with leafy and exotic trees, which were decorated in faience with monkeys hanging from the branches, as well as faience benches mushrooms, snails, swallows, reptiles, all in giant size to fill our eyes. A magnificent work by Joana Vasconcelos. Around the flower beds, peacocks stroll with their young, some are on the tops of the trees with very young babies who come and go from their mothers' breasts (it touched me to see how carefully they protected their young. In the other garden of the palace, besides other beautiful statues, there is the real statue of the writer Eça de Queiroz, who was in Largo do Barão de Quintela, where she was vandalized. In its center there is a beautiful lake ornamented with beautiful statues, and with a beautiful kiosk / bar that reopened relatively recently with very friendly and kind people to assist us. The terrace is very pleasant and is located around the lake. The space is intended for the public service of the museum visitor, and not only: also for those who want to enjoy an afternoon well spent with friends enjoying tea, or other drinks and not only, (the kiosk has a very varied menu ) and all this with the advantage that entrance to the gardens is free. To visit the museum, the regular ticket has an affordable price of 3 euros! For all this this place deserves to be visited!

Lovely gardens with peacocks and quiosque. Really enjoyed the summer 2022 temporary exhibit about Lisboa in the 1920s. The attendant spoke Portuguese and English (maybe additional languages?). Exhibit information was primarily in Portuguese with English subtitles/summaries.

Very quiet on weekday afternoon. It’s wonderful to step on the old palace wooden floors and see the old furnitures and arts. There are dozens of peacocks wandering around in the garden, very small ones too. There’s one with albinism who likes to show his feathers all the time. I would come just for the peacocks!

Nice small museum that provides the history of Lisbon back to the Stone age. There aren't many tourists at this museum, so it's a pleasant place to visit to pick up some knowledge during high season. There's also a nice little outdoor cafe and the garden area. It's a good place for a quick nosh when visiting the museum.

A complete and detailed tour through the history of Lisbon from the Paleolithic to the XXI century, for 6 euros roughly, also guaranteeing you accesss to this museums' other "siblings" in Lisbon's Downtown (Baixa). P.S.: Do not touch the exhibits.

This was a wonderful museum with so much information and interactive options. We learned so much, enjoyed the outdoor portions (be sure to see the peacocks), and enjoyed a chance to learn more about our beautiful vacation spot.

A museum with artefacts from Lisbon's history, some sections are more interesting than others. I enjoyed the model of Lisbon before the quake in 1755 as well as hobby model of Lisbon around 1900 made by a fireman an amateur model builder. Make sure to see the garden with peacocks and an art installation of ceramic animals. Entrance to the park is free!

There is beautiful garden there, free to enter trough the main museum's entrance. Quite and peaceful atmosphere. About 20+ peacocks there and you can take a seat and watch them closely. I did not visit museum due the renovation works. The ticket is 3 euro, Lisboa card is not accepted.

The museum is still being renovated, so there is not much to see on the first floor. The garden with the modern art is nice; so are the peacocks.

Perfect place to take some rest from the busyness of the city. Take a walk and end up in the back garden where peacocks will be welcoming you. High trees are perfect to shade you while reading on the benches and statues and flowers will make it feel like you’re on a timeline journey.

A tiny musuem, depicting history of Lisbon over years. Lots of panaramic paintings/photos and scale models are provided to facilitate imagination of the city development. Also, the appearance of the city before and after the catastrophic earthquake in 1755. The musuem has a tiny garden where few peafowls live freely. Free entrance for residents on the first Sunday of the month.

Wonderful experience! An old and splendid kitchen, loads of historic pieces, lovely gardens and plenty of peacocks walking around it. There is an amazing interactive model of the city of Lisbon. Staff (apart from one) were all very welcoming and approachable. We heard Lisbon’s history from a staff while saw the city model… we were delighted! It made our visit extra special. I recommend a visit to this fantastic place.

Truly liked it here. It was so peaceful since not many tourist around. There was so much history and I loved how the museum presented the history timeline with artifacts, art and tiles etc. Unfortunately the exhibit upstairs was closed for renovation. The garden was so peaceful and I enjoyed spending some time watching the beautiful peacocks in the yard!

Very interesting display of Lisbon's history in a beautiful old building with a nice quiet garden with peacocks and cute sculptures. At the moment the antique history part of exhibition is closed, but everything from the great earthquake onwards can be seen. And it's absolutely worth visiting!

Such a nice museum building where you learn a lot about the city's history and development through time. A really good place to learn about how the Lisbon earthquake of 1755 changed the city. Wonderful garden worth a visit and a drink at the quiosque with all the beautiful peacocks surrounding you.

Beautiful garden with many peacocks walking around, and the surprise was a hidden garden, a project from Joana Vasconcelos with Bordalo Pinheiro ceramic animals. Wow! The permanent exhibit is a must see as it tells part of our history from the pre and post earthquake. The new Lisboa Ainda exhibit, what I was to see in the first place, is the vision of the quarantined Lisbon by 4 photojournalists, nice to see as well.

Lots of really interesting exhibits, although you won't necessarily learn too much about the history of Lisbon, particularly from the time of the earthquake onwards. The Roaring Twenties exhibition (until 11 Dec 22) is excellent.

Everyone visiting Lisbon for the first time should visit this museum before anything. Very well organized, telling the city history since it’s ancient residents (Paleolithic). I truly recommend. Don’t forget to visit the garden.

If you love history, the Museum of Lisbon is a simple yet wonderful introduction to the history of the city. The 3D model of pre-1755 Lisbon is impressive made extra special by the incredible and informative docent who gave us the highlights and history of certain historical buildings that still exist today. The museum itself is also historical and beautiful.

Best kept secret in Lisbon. Out of the way. In a charming setting with peacocks everywhere. The archeology , history and culture of Portugal is displayed at its best.Roaring Twenties Exhibit ends Dec 11. They should make it a permanent.

It is an old school kind of museum, I have to say it is a bit boring and the time line is not very clear for people who know zero about Lisbon. In essence, the objects of the exhibition lack context; it might make sense for Portuguese school children who learned history in school and see the object in real life. But for tourist it is really puzzling as it has minimum interaction, and I get more confused about the city history (and the country’s as a whole) coming out from it. The weirdest part is that 1755 earthquake was not actually mentioned that much besides the miniature. Overall, it is pretty cool to see the peacocks at the garden, but not recommend if you are tourists and want to know more about the city history. It might be totally different for locals so it is only for the reference of foreigners.

The museum tells the history of the city of Lisbon. A visit to the museum helps to understand the development of the city, prior and after the 1755 earthquake. The staff there were also amazing, you can communicate with them in English. Most of the information about the collection is also translated in English, so that international visitors can understand what the museum collections says.
