Really fun museum collection of puppets, marionettes, and international masks. Especially good sections about traditional puppet theater in Portugal and Mali animal masks. Items are very well displayed. Our visit was less than an hour. Note that access from street level involves one flight of stairs outside and more than a flight inside. We felt like we were the only ones in the museum on a summer Saturday.

Really nice little museum. We spent an hour and a half wandering around the exhibits here and took lots of great pictures. Tickets are only €2.50 if you're under 26 or over 60 so really excellent value! Full ticket price is still only €5 and I would say it is definitely well worth it!

A great museum that takes you on a trip around the world. The world of puppetry in Portugal but also from far away. Mixed with stop motion and how this art is evolving. A great collection which is worth the visit

Small museum inserted in a very old monastery building in Lisbon. The puppet collection though small, is incredible in its portrayal of different origins, traditions and handling of puppetry. Workshops for adults and kids are available throughout the year. Accessing the museum itself is not easy, since there are no parking spots in the building. The main entrance has a very long stairway, though special access for low mobility can be requested. Once inside it is very walkable and bathrooms are wide and clean. Objects are identified in PT, ENG and FR and there are various puppets and animation interfaces meant to be held and played by visitors.

What an amazing museum! Puppets exibited are so diverse and creative, I was completely fascinated... There is a big collection of marionettes, hand puppets, masks and stop motion puppets that will give you insight into the art and craft of both puppet making throughout history and performance practice through videos that you can watch. They also have a good and diverse collection of books about puppet theatre that you can buy. If you like theatre, you have to see this museum. 100%

Incredible puppets collection from Portugal and some others countries. Overpassed my expectations by far. Confirme by looking at some 3D I’ve posted.

Absolutely whimsical collection that transported me into a more or less obscure realm. I adored the fact that I felt as if I had hit the rewind button and turned into my child self. Giggled all the way through!

Honestly one of the best museums I’ve been to. Actually interesting and fun and comical. There are several rooms with marionettes from all over the world, as well as some interactive exhibits. The gift shop is also wonderful.

Great museum to visit. They have very beautiful puppets with some interactive games for children. A must stop in Lisbon. In addition, it is cheap. Also, the Bulding itself is nice to visit.

We were pulled in by reviews of it being scary and it was fabulous. So many great examples of puppets and from a variety of places. Really interesting - would recommend. Only a few scary ones!

A nice trip around the world of puppetry, and "memory lane", of course. Also very educational in terms of understanding how it used to entertain children and grownups alike, in a time way before the internet, all the way to the modern puppet animation techniques with stop motion. The old convent where it is located has a huge stairway as the only way in. If you have trouble going up stairs, be prepared.

Well-thought permanent exposition. Should be interesting both for kids and adults. Temporary exposition was very different (modern puppet animation) and smaller (one big hall) but no worse in any sense

A very well designed small museum. At the time of my visit there was a temporary exhibition named « made in China » that contained puppets of theatre from far east, also including paper shadow puppets. The permanent exhibition includes puppets from around the world and a section specifically for Portuguese puppetry industry. There were some active interaction sites which includes choosing some videos to display and also one that You could actually play with some glove puppet. Overall it was a nice experience and I strongly recommend to visit.

What a weird and wonderful place. It might only take 1hr/1.5hrs to go around but it's pretty cheap and a good way to see something a bit more unusual. Most of the information panels have English translations and there are guide booklets for other languages too.

If you’re a puppet nerd, don’t miss out on this one. There’s great variety of puppets from Portugal, Europe, Southeast Asia, South America, and Africa, with some videos to see them in action on actual shows. I take my time in museums and this place took me an hour and a half.

Way more interesting than the name would suggest. It has pieces from all over the world and in several styles, including tribal costumes and masks and stop motion animation props.

I've stayed in Santos a few tubes but never been in the museum. But it was lovely. Such a range of puppets from different countries. As well as static puppets there were done video clips like one from Vietnam? Showing puppets in water. We also enjoyed seeing the temporary exhibition of animal masks and puppets . Very colourful and Interesting visit. Not just for children.

What a surprise to stumble on this lovely little museum in Lisbon. The puppets they show are from around the world; from Thailand to Germany, throughout the ages. I never realized how many different styles of marionette or puppet there really are. Some are shadow puppet, some are teeny and some are larger than life size. I really enjoyed how the puppets were displayed in groupings. They were wonderful historic videos from performances when the puppeteers themselves were active.
