Basílica de Nossa Senhora dos Mártires (Basilica of Our Lady of the Martyrs) is located along Rua Serpa Pinto in the Chiado neighbourhood. It is one of several interesting historic church buildings you can visit in the area and according to their website is open from 9am to 6.30pm (Mon to Fri) and 10am to 6.30pm (Sat & Sun). There is a mass schedule on the Basilica website as well if needed. The Basilica history dates back to the reconquest of Lisbon in 1147, when a chapel was built here to house the image of the Virgin carried by English crusaders. The chapel was given the name Our Lady of the Martyrs in memory of all European soldiers who died in retaking the city and defending the Christian faith. The present church you can see today dates back to 1784. It was constructed by Portuguese architect Reinaldo Manuel dos Santos to replace the previous building destroyed during the 1755 Earthquake. You'll find subtle Baroque exterior along with a nicely decorated interior. The nave is lined side alters and fronted by an impressive main alter. There is also a delightful ceiling fresco, the work of Pedro Alexandrino de Carvalho, whose work can also be found in Sé (Lisbon Cathedral) and other important historic buildings around the city from that time.

Simply a beautiful Church built-in 1147, check out all the details on their walls. I was shocked by how it was so well preserved and so nice at the same time. It is amazing how people used to work years ago. As soon as I walked in I felt so at peace and I loved it.

Unfortunately, I could only see it from the outside, from which it is very beautiful.

We attended the vigil mass on Saturday evening. The Cantor also played the organ and had a beautiful singing voice. The people were friendly and the interior what's lovely. I wish that I spoke Portuguese. I couldn't understand the homily.

Very well-kept church, with beautiful frescoes. It has relics of knights who participated in the conquest of Lisbon. Very beautiful lighting, which highlights the beauty of the church.

Nice church- shame about the priest. I attended mass and went up to receive communion when the altar boy insisted that I place it on a silver plate first. Never seen that before. When I didn't do it the priest ushered me away with a bat of his hand. I was mortified.

There is plenty of seating to help you relax. Unfortunately a bit uncomfortable, hence 4/5 stars.
