The
Church
of
St.
Nicholas
is
located
in
the
Baixa
district
of
Lisbon
and
open
most
of
the
day
so
it
is
convenient
to
visit
if
passing
through
the
area.
Historically,
the
church
was
originally
built
in
1280.
However,
what
you
see
today
is
a
reconstruction
that
took
place
after
the
devastating
1755
Lisbon
Earthquake.
Rebuilt
between
the
1760s
and
1850s,
the
church
building
you
see
today
as
both
Baroque
and
Neo-Classical
features.
The
facade
is
unassuming
while
the
interior
is
more
ornately
decorative.
There
is
a
lovely
series
of
beautiful
ceiling
paintings
that
depict
the
live
of
St.
Nicholas.
The
nave
is
laid
with
coloured
marble
fitted
with
niche
chapels
holding
sculptures
of
various
saints.
There
is
a
gilded
sacramental
throne
in
the
chancel
at
the
front
of
the
church
that
is
very
nice
to
see
as
well.
Interestingly,
near
the
back
you
will
see
a
multi-language
monitor
screen.
You
can
use
to
learn
about
the
history
of
the
Church
of
St.
Nicholas
including
what
happened
during
the
1755
Lisbon
Earthquake.
There
is
information
about
the
church
reconstructions
as
well
as
important
artefacts
and
ceiling
paintings
that
you
can
see
as
well.
