This Bell Tower, also known as Torre do Galo da Ajuda, is located next to the Ajuda National Palace and has its origins after the 1755 earthquake, which leveled the city of Lisbon and destroyed the Royal Palace which was located opposite Cais das Colunas, in Terreiro do Paço. On that occasion, King D. José I and his family were at the Palace of Belém and did not suffer any damage. However, the King, after visiting the deep damage found in the broken city, decided not to live in stone and masonry buildings. Thus, he ordered the construction of an existing farm on the land in Ajuda, a residence built in wood and light materials which became known as "Barraca Real".
