I cam at 1:00 am for an emergency as i am suffering from fever, headache and sore throat. Lady on the counter she was good in English asked for my NHS number and told my turn will come after 7 hours approximately. I was having fever couldn't be able to face cold weather so i went home. Somehow after 7 hours i cam In the morning and again she noted my name and asked to wait and did not gave any time approximation. I don't think so my turn will come before 5 hours.. There are bunch of chairs to sit but its an open place and air and coldness 🥶 is extreme.

I would NOT consider Portugal a third world country. Given what I experienced in this hospital, you would assume otherwise. Horrendous conditions. I had severe pain in my stomach and was sent to URGENT CARE from another hospital. Got here, the place is a big mess. The walls are mouldy, there's no desinfectant in any disposer. Once it was my call, they have me a yellow wristband and told me to follow the yellow line. What i experienced there was even worse. People were sitting & laying all over the floor, people in hospital beds were just "placed" between them and never looked at again. I asked the girl next to me how long she's been waiting. 8 hours so far. EIGHT HOURS in severe pain. Honestly, if you want medical help: don't go there.

It's very crowded, but apparently, other hospitals are sending patients. I went to accompany my mother in law as my father in law had a heart attack. It is very difficult to have info on the patients. People in general are very rude and don't like to treat you well. Apparently, it's something normal for them, and they do not realize it. It's really sad as you're passing through a difficult moment, and they are not trained to deal with people. Luckily, the Dr. was very patient and tried to explain my in-laws much better. Another thing different here from America is that you can not stay with the patient overnight.

Horrible, third-world experience. My friend broke her ankle and she got put in the pre-surgery ward for 5 days, without date for surgery, sleeping in a corridor full of people for nights, and not allowed her phone, book, or any belonging, as part of the rules in that ward. Next to her, rows of sick elderly people also lying in stretchers in the corridor. She wasn't allowed out, not even for a wheelchair walk - she almost went crazy for days. The staff are rude, stressed, and the experience is completely inhumane. Avoid at all costs.

I had a very bad experience in this hospital today. I am a tourist in Lisbon and I needed to see a doctor urgently. At first, I went to a private clinic (it looked good, but they told me that consultation costs around 150 euros, so if I want to save money, I should go to the usual public clinic and they gave me the address of the Hospital de Santa Maria). Well, I went there, wait around 3-4 hours in a queue of course (but it's ok because it was free, I thought), then the doctor took me and told me just to drink ibuprofen and go to my doctor at home when I return home (without any explanations what is it with me, no diagnoses, nothing). And in the end, I should pay 130 euros because I am a foreigner! and NOBODY warned me before an appointment. Woman at the reception explained my why, but only AFTER when I already paid. So why did I lose these 4 hours and the same money as in a private clinic but with much worse service - I don't know.

I'm an American visiting Lisbon and went to the emergency room for bad ankle pain. The first thing that came out of the receptionists mouth was that I was in Portugal and should learn Portuguese. She then told me that since I'm an outsider I should go to a private hospital since I don't contribute to the country. The lady next to her laughed the entire time. Very rude workers, outdated and unclean facility. Go to a private hospital if you can!

It was busy as expected but the nurses and doctors were very nice and helpful. Doctors speak very good English. You could see they try to do their best under the circumstances. Especially seeing nurses try to cheer up people waiting for surgery was very emotional. Just a note since I went to the ER on friday night I waited about 2.5 hours. But it is ER so be aware about that.

Honestly not good. I came in to obstetrics and gynaecology emergency. The hospital is old, bathrooms are disgusting and bedside manner is awful. Nurses were actually lovely but the one of the doctors showed no empathy and was not nice at all. After explaining that my portuguese is not 100% she made no effort to try to slow down or explain better. Dr didnt introduce herself, didnt explain what was going on or what her thoughts were. No communication or empathy for the patient. If you can, avoid. Definition of patient care not being centred around the patient. I was there for a total of 7 hours, which is long but they were busy so understandable. There must be better care somewhere in Lisbon as this is not it

Today the SNS told my husband (who are COVID positive and very ill) to call Santa Maria hospital to see if we could book an appointment to be seen by a doctor. I called this morning and the woman on the phone was extremely rude. I was informed to go to the emergency room. I went to the covid emergency where my husband and I waited STANDING UP FOR 3 AND A HALF HOURS WITHOUT BEING ATTENDED. My husband felt so much worse and we had to leave to go home unattended and still very ill. An absolute disgrace. After 2 years of COVID you would think a hospital can be a little more organised.

I arrived to the emergencies with fever and infection in my throat. After waiting some time, in the desk, they asked me about my direction, and the personal data, and also I showed my European Health card. I’m in Lisbon since one week and I’m planning to stay here long time, but of course I still need to do many papers. The woman in the desk, gave me a paper and she said that I have to send an email because if I don’t, the “appointment” from today will be 130€. I was shocked because when I had to go to a public hospital in other countries with the EH card I’ve never had any problem, but ok, continue. She started to ask me about who is my family doctor and where is my medical centre, and I told her that I still don’t have, but I have the EH card. -Ok wait there, they will call you.- I was waiting there (not too much to be honest) and when I went inside, where the doctor was, she started to ask me lot of questions, again the same as in desk. I was trying to answer her but my Portuguese is not good, so I was taking my time to answer, plus my sore throat was a lot, and she started to be a bit nervous and finally we started to speak in English. What was my surprise? SHE DID NOT ATTEND ME BECAUSE I DO NOT HAVE FAMILY DOCTOR. What she did basically, is give me one paper to go to the medical centre tomorrow (because today is closed, and probably tomorrow too) and ask for a family doctor and then, they can attend me. After she did this, I asked her if at least she can see me, because I have fever and infection and my throat is completely white. She said -NO. You have to go tomorrow here.- So basically, in this hospital, they didn’t attend me with 39.1°C fever and an infection because I don’t have family doctor. I know this is not normal because I know people who have been there and they attended them with any problem, but is not my case. So I went there sick, and I came back home sick, with no recipe for the medicine, and with three useless papers.

I came with a respiratory problem, I waited 12 HOURS and in the next day they sent me a mail asking for the consultation money! At the emergency, with the European Health Insurance Card is free everywhere and here THEY ASKED FOR MONEY and they didn’t mention before it will cost. Also, except 2 nurses, everyone was really hostile and aggressive and they also didn’t speak any English. Pacients were calling for nurses and NO ONE came ever. So many people standing because we were too many people

(Translated by Google) It is shameful and frustrating to have family members in the hospital and you do not even bother to answer the phones. One day ago a family member of mine had to be operated on urgently for a serious illness ... I tried all day to get news about it, because due to the Covid-19 Pandemic it is impossible to have visits, and to get 0 answers, they gave 2 numbers , one of them doesn't even exist ... just incredible ... thanks for the incompetence, keep going !! Only in Portugal! Again, thanks for nothing. (Original) É vergonhoso e frustrante ter familiares no hospital e os senhores nem se darem ao trabalho de atenderem os telefones. Só mesmo em Portugal! Mais uma vez, obrigado por nada.

The waiting lines are bigger than my hatred for this hospital . The website just lies in regard to waiting times. The space is disgusting The staff is just disrespectful There is absolutely no info or no one to request info to. You just sit. And wait. 2h, 3h , 4h . If you are coming here bring food, water, power bank and don't bring anger issues.

Good Afternoon. I go to Hospital de Santa Maria since 1967/68. This is a great School of Medicine: Great Doctors, great Staff. I strongly recommend it. After all, it is our main Hospital in Lisbon...🙏🏽👍💜 Well, good morning, I have a new post, which contradicts almost all I wrote before...It concerns the SU, I mean, "Serviço de Urgência"...where I had to go, on the 8th November 2023, as I fell in my kitchen and bumped my head so, it was Trauma 🙀😠Sorry about that. The Service was not ideal! Esoecially one of good Doctors "Tarefeiro, as I was told", from Moldavia, who was very tired, scrubing his eyes and hands, as he was telling me about my condition, caring less about what I had to say as a patient. I have even joked with him, in order to be compreensive, funny, to help him show a better mood, but that was no good! He behaved even worse. For him, I had nothing at all...Oh Lord have Mercy! For the record, he told me that he had more patients to see and slamned the door behind my back...and I was in pain... So nice, don't you think??? I think that someone or something must be blamed for this nasty and sad situation; but surely not the patients!!!! Later on, I was seen by two nice good "Baby Doctors" 💙👌as I named them, as they were very young but competent and caring. Her names are Dr Margarida, and Dr. Inês from "Medicina Interna" at service at S.U. on the 8thNovember. Thanks to them I was seen properly and in a good manner. Congrats!👏👏 So, and because of these two good female Doctors, I'm not withdrawing my review stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟or else. I still think that Hospital de Santa Maria is our School and our 2nd home....🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽💙🌻🍁🌾👍🐲😃

The telephone is a simple prop because they never answer it and when a person has the possibility to go there to make an appointment the upstairs is auditing and the downstairs people have no competence to do so. Wow! I have been in ER in Italy and it was hell so I went here with the same idea. It was actually a really good experience. I did about 4 different analysis- had an IV and consultations and it all took 4 hours. Waiting time was super short. Doctors and staff were all super nice to me - it does help if you can speak a little Portuguese though because not all the staff did but overall place was super Clean and they offered snacks. It generally felt like they cared and wanted to help which was not my experience at all in Rome.

While the hospital itself might be a little dated and indeed it was quite crowded there is nothing to complain about their service quite the opposite. I had excellent emergency care. A very young doctor, Dr. Rafael, a plastic surgeon helped me and i couldn't be happier.

Absolute joke for a hospital. Came with a broken leg at 1am, left with a broken leg after 6 hours of waiting in a cold, between coughing and screaming older patients. Probably the most terrifying experience of my life and I’ve lived in third world countries. Don’t even bother if it’s an emergency. I’m very disappointed that this is the quality of healthcare in Portugal. I do have to say that doctors and nurses I’ve interacted with were indeed nice considering the circumstances and even tried to speak english.

The service is terrible, and this is just juggling with people's health. 4 days into being committed, I still don't know what's going on with a patient, and no one can seem to persuade the doctor to speak with the family, and no one seems to know anything about his state. Then there are looks and stares and a general feeling that you're nagging the staff for daring to ask what's going on. Forget public hospitals in Portugal, this one in particular. Go for a private one - they're not perfect but they're not this bad either. I'll surely be voting for any party that wants full privatization of the SNS from now on.

Very difficult to find your way to the consultant appointments and it wasn’t clear what to do. However the staff were very helpful but only if you speak simple Portuguese so you can ask for what you want. But the consultant was really brilliant and spoke perfect English. Glad we went to this hospital. Plenty of paid parking outside but you may have to wait if a busy period. You will get somewhere to park though.

If you have respiratory symptoms I would avoid it's emergency at all costs, specially if it's a day with bad weather. You will wait for hours in a waiting room outside, sun or shine - which will not contribute to your health. Additionally, they will not give you a bracelet/identification as in the regular Emergency or any time expectation.

This place is horrible, the way they treat people and leave them in hallways unattended should be illegal. 50+ people were waiting not even enough chairs for patients to sit. I've never in my life seen anything like it. People were coughing up blood in the waiting area, yelling in pain, and body fluids were on the floor/walls in the waiting area. I waited five hours before I decided to go to another hospital because I think they would have left me to die there. During that time they never even checked my vitals. I had appendicitis which can be life-threatening!! Of course, I don't blame the healthcare workers at all. There is clearly a crisis and they are being overworked and underpaid. I'm sure people are dying because of these issues!! I've read up to 14hr wait time this is not ok!! I also heard the security guard tell a patient "nobody wants to see you leave and come back tomorrow"... UNACCEPTABLE

The Goverment doesn't help the Hospital so i don't know if they have funds, the facilities outside look miserable, someone has to stop this and paint the walls and reconstruct areas of the Hospital fast fast it seems from 1950 looks and we are in 2022 with high tech technology. Doctors are great, staff mainly is great and is a good Hospital but the Building is a joke. Somebody stop this Madness and paint the walls outside. I leave one star just because of the buidling structure all else is mainly great.

We were on a trip to Portugal and really needed to see a doctor fast cause I was in pain. We arrived by emergency and had to wait MORE THAN 4 HOURS, i don't know how they interpretate "EMERGENCY" but if i had known it, i would have asked for a consultation, as it would have been faster. It was not only for us, the people around us had to wait as long or even longer. It was horrible to see. Also the hygiene was not as it should be in a hospital, people could walk anywhere, no closing doors, chaotic systems .. this is not what hospital should must be like. Unbelieveable.

I went to the emergencies on a Wed and got out in less than 2 hours, after seeing a general doctor and a dermatologist right after. All the staff was able to give me clear directions and instructions. Most of them spoke English and understood my basic Portuguese.

The obstetric and haemotology team at Hospital Universitari Santa Maria in Lisbon have been superb, the most capable within Portugal. The Hospital Universitari Santa Maria is an old building, a huge hospital, but don't let appearances deceive: their management and clinical teams are good. General wards are of much more concern, so avoid transfer out of obstetrics if you can: hence the score of 4 rather than 5. In January 2023, when my wife was 7 months pregnant our unborn daughter became seriously ill, with imminent risk of death, and my wife's haemoglobin became life threatening (it went down to 3g/dl at one point). She was admitted to but denied all treatment by Maternidade Alfredo da Costa (MAC) - I will do a review for MAC who deserve a zero score - so my wife went from MAC in an uncontrolled discharge to Hospital Universitari Santa Maria. The obstetrics team at Hospital Universitari Santa Maria did absolutely all they could, were honest, really caring and professional. Unfortunately our baby died shortly after delivery, as her condition was not survivable - the hospital team really tried, with ten different doctors working on her at once in a perfectly sychronised team. My wife was also in a critical condition, and it is through the care from the obstetrics and haemotology team, that she is alive today - if she had stayed at MAC it is certain that she would have died. I would recommend Hospital Universitari Santa Maria to anyone looking for obstetric care in Portugal. Our only complaint is Santa Maria recorded the death as a still birth to help their stats, when it definitely was not: the baby was alive and kicking immediately before the caesarian and we have two witnesses there was a heart beat after separation of the umbilical: our daughter died because she could not breathe properly - an early neonatal death. Doctors falsely completed the operation notes, so she has no name, no birth certificate and no death certificate, when an early neonatal death gets all those things in Portugal. This misrecording is probably rampant, so don't compare the low risk of pregnancy in Portugal with the UK.

I stayed here after getting my face bashed in with a beer mug. The nurses I spoke to were delightful, but the stitches were a hatchet job. Some of them were correctly done (only a few mm long), but some of the stitches stretched up to 2 cm. What good is local anesthesia if the needle enters below it? When I was about to leave, I passed out on the floor and was given fluid, cookies, and water. My two stars are therefore awarded because of the great nurses, not the mail-order doctor.

it is a great shame how the healthcare system works in Portugal. Unless you are in critical condition, expect to wait 6-10 hours for a doctor. I waited for an hour before they did an X-ray and after another 6 hours of waiting for the doctor I left because I was told that I would have to wait at least 3 more hours. They didn't even want to give me the X-ray

The lack of organization and work method is regrettable. The user seems to be extra, and every employee who passes by in the corridor has something to give. There may be contradictory information that could put the user at risk.

I remember that this place used to be very friendly and responsible, but now, the reception staff say your name in a very impatient tone, and tease other receptionists with a contemptuous attitude that if you are not seriously ill, you should go to the family doctor. , I really can’t understand, why would I come to the hospital if the illness was not serious? When you finally get in line, you will be told when you enter that there is no doctor, and you will be asked to leave and go to another hospital. This is obviously the largest hospital in Lisbon, so why is there no doctor?

I believe that organization for visits should be managed and carried out in another way (pointing out the person's name and calling to collect the password, or taking the password and then, at opening time, calling for registration) and in terms of visits to the users who are here, I believe that if it is one person per hour (this refers to the UTIC Department; 1st visit from 2pm to 3pm and the 2nd visit from 5pm to 6pm) different rules should not be applied just because they are someone who works in this hospital and have the possibility of exchanging with the person who entered previously, meaning at the time of the first visit exchanging 15 minutes before its end. Because we all arrived here with the same objective and above all to see our own, I hope that these injustices and indifferences, when it suits some and not others, are no longer applied, as I move on to the complaints book without thinking twice.

The worst experience of my life... They can't speak English and you need to wait for more than 5 hours to see a doctor. Because on the emergency there is only 1 doctor that can speak English. Doesn't matter which colour you will be classified. I was there for one week and stayed all the time on the corridor, so I didn't sleep at all. The doctors don’t communicate with their patients. You will not get enough food in the hospital, you need to buy yourself. Nurses are not friendly because they need to take care of too much patients. You have no privacy because you sleep in the corridor. There are a lot of visitors every day and they all see you. If you need to stay in bed the nurses will only put a small curtain when they wash you or if you need to go to the toilet. You share 1 shower with more than 20 persons, so you need to shower quick. The hospital is also dirty. Please go to the private hospital and prevent a nightmare...

I ended up in the ER because of a chronic allergic reaction in my eyes, and I cannot say enough good things about the staff of Santa Maria's ER. I can honestly say the visit was actually enjoyable, not something you'd ever think you'd say about going to an ER. Everyone I met from check-in to check-out was kind and compassionate. I was in excellent hands the entire time and was in and out in under an hour. It was incredible. I have been singing the praises of this hospital ever since. I wish the staff at the hospital in my home city treated patients the way the people of Santa Maria do. If you need medical help in Lisbon, this is the place to go!

I don't even know what to say. You literally have to lose an arm to get medical help. If you're from a different country they'll let anyone else who's Portuguese get medical help before you do. Even if you came 3 hours earlier. Its disgusting how they treat sick people, they let the beds stand in the corner of the waiting rooms where everyone can look at them struggling. Maybe I'm privileged because I'm used to German health care but this can't be. Especially in an ER where you should get immediate help.

(Translated by Google) I was yesterday with my mother of 89 years in the emergency room and the doctor tyke "Eduardo anything" beards, did not value the problem did not care of interning with her indication to do so. Negligent, disinterested doctor, snob, a lousy professional. If it were his mother or grandmother, he would have another understanding and move mountains to help. My mother needed to be examined by a gastro doctor for having very violent abdominal pains and this maze discharged her. I only said bad things about the health minister instead of doing his job. Well the minister is another incompetent. I've been watching the offices for a while, and instead of the doctors calling in the patients, their cell phones are in their hands, busy doing what I don't know. Then they think they earn badly, and many of them also work privately. I regret that there has not yet been a government to prevent this shame. Either you work in private or in public on both sides should never be accepted. Greedy Go abroad if you don't like being here. Portuguese we are handed over to incompetent, inhuman and corrupt people. Out with all these people from here. Bom a ministra é outra incompetente. Portugueses estamos entregues a gente incompetente, desumana e a corruptos. Fora com esta gente toda daqui.

(Translated by Google) Absolutely unreal! ... Security only allows access to consultations 30 minutes before the appointment (which would make sense), but then we went to the appointment and found queues of 15 or 20 people and a service rhythm of 1 person every 15 minutes. Throughout the day people accumulate in the lines inside the building, on top of each other. DGS should look at this instead of conditioning the work of the restaurant trade, which accumulates far fewer people in a much larger space. (Original) Absolutamente irreal!...

But I've always had doubts, because I've seen the post open Saturdays and Sundays countless times when not with people coming in the back and / or being served in the rooms on the lower floor and most of the times they enter the bottom parts. I even wondered if they were friends of their friends who had the privilege of taking advantage of the center. I say this because I've never, ever, never been served at this station and the phone never works, just to decorate the table. I made my transfer to a station in Lisbon and I have full attention and I can be attended without any problems.

In this critical time of the Pandemic, when I had a health concern, we thought it would take forever to be booked for tests, however, my appointment was set for 3 days after initial contact with a doctor. The staff in this hospital are amazing! My Portuguese is very poor but they made sure that there was someone with me who spoke English the entire time I was there. In 3 hours I had 2 doctor consults, an MRI, biopsy, ultrasound and another test. Dr. Isabel Duarte is amazing as is all her staff! The doctor ensured that she explained everything clearly and then went out of her way to go through it again with my husband. We are new to Portugal, we had heard terrible things about Government Health Care but we feel that the service is far better than what you find in the states (we have used their health care) and comparable to the Alberta care system which is excellent. All of the staff we encountered were helpful, friendly and caring. I’m sure you won’t find better care anywhere.

Great Hospital! Excellent Medical Staff! The only thing is that Politicians don't even give funds or make policies to Paint the Wall's of the Hospital and it's Infra-structure that looks so outdated of this great place making it's services decrease in time! The Management of the Hospital is not being done accordingly so the services get worst but the doctors are very good. The food is terrible is not made in accordance with each patient disease and adjusted to it's recovery for example someone that breaks a bone needs more calcium food or someone has an infection a specific food and that doesn't need a big funds to cook, the hospital should have top chef's food. The Hospital needs a qualified technical and management team to adjust services to it's great doctors and nurses.

You know what's amazing about this Santa Maria Hospital in Lisboa? I was yesterday for an emergency in the Cirugia Urgente Dep. and had to wait 5 hours until it was my turn. 5 hours for me to watch and see what an amazing job they all do. Hundreds of patients a day and each has their individual emergency problem. And then it was my turn at past 8:30 pm. And a door opened and a young Dr. is smiling at me and apologizes first for the long waiting time. Then he and 2 other Dr. look at my problem and carefully choose the best solution for me. I went home without pain, sleeping well the first time since days. I was so amazed seeing all the hard work they do in the hospital and when I enter the room after all the many emergency cases, they still have the smile and very professional and thorough treatment with patients and warm hearts. Amazing!

Hi, I would like share my latest experience in the hospital Santa Maria Lisboa Department of Eergency, on 15 of march 2023, i have been there with my wife. We were there around 9:30 am and waited until 9:00 pm but they didn't call our name. My wife had pain (civer pain), was crying, laying on chairs, nobody listened, I had requested to start check up or give pain relief remedy but had simple answer no n just wait, we will call. Around 8 o'clock in the evening we ask about how they r working, we show our hospital armband with green color and they said may not be possible today but you can wait... After 9 o'clock we decided to return home without check up. It was not my first time there because we have been there 3 times already but this time it was bit bitter experience. I have been in Portugal about 7 years, had good experiences in previous visits. But now, I don't know who is responsible for this situations, because Hospital Santa Maria is the prestige of Lisbon (might be whole nation). It's time to think about to change something inside in the hospital, I am sure that it is not because of staffs (Doctors and medical assistants), there might need to change something in management team/administration or need to take some strong decision on it. I can see now condition in this hospital is being worsed day by day. If nobody will not think/take action on it then one day nobody will trust you. Thank you Best wisher

I paid 120€ to see the doctor as my nose had been broken they made me wait 6 hours did a CT scan then when I went to see the specialist he refused to do anything saying I needed a rhino surgery I went to a doctor a week later in zurich to be told that's ridiculous and he should have done it then as now it's to late, they where so unorganized with half the doctors not doing anything apart from chatting about there weekend and clocking hours. Don't go here, they are useless.

Went to this hospital last weekend and was well looked after by the doctors! The man who checked me and the woman who performed my X-ray were both so lovely and ensured me that i was in good hands as they saw that I was nervous being in the hospital. There was a long wait as I spent more or less 5.5hrs there but that is to be expected in a hospital. Overall a very nice service and most of the staff that I came across spoke english.

It's been a week now that I've been trying to contact the Santa Maria hospital to find out information about a patient and I've never received any assistance. I called at various times of the day and the only thing you hear is the recording that refers to some services, but none of them actually answer (I've tried them all!). It is unacceptable and a total lack of respect for anyone trying to find out about their family or friends!
