It's located on a roundabout next to Parque Eduardo VII and a few minutes walk from the shopping centre of Amoreira . This is the monument to the Marquis of Pombal, the prime minister responsible for the rebuilding of Lisbon following the Great Earthquake in 1755, showing him standing on a column with his hand on a lion (symbol of power) and his eyes directed to the downtown area that he rebuilt.

It is one of the most popular tourist spots in Lisbon, Portugal. This is also a historical place. Hundreds of people come here every day with their family members and friends. Many people gather here during the summer and there are also live concerts for the New Year's celebrations. Highly recommended

This square with a huge roundabout is very suggestive. The statue of Marquis Pombal that dominates the entire area from the top of the column up to the Tagus. For the more dynamic people, I suggest climbing to the top, up to Jardim Amalia Rodrigues where you can admire a view of Lisbon and the Tagus river. Maybe is an imperial place

Once being at this beautiful square, you will be amazed at the scale and beauty. You can Look at it for a long time, especially well in the Christmas period when the area is decorated and illuminated. It is a pleasure to stroll in the evening, with fewer locals and tourists, one can admire the tranquil environment when noone and there are only few cars.

Very cool monument to the man who rebuilt Lisbon after the fire and included a cool monument to himself in the city planning. Get up close to see the awesome calcada of a carvel in the sidewalk in front of the monument

A monument to the Marquis of Pombal was erected in the center of the square. The statue represents the Marquess of Pombal, who was the governor of Lisbon between 1750 and 1777. He is depicted standing next to a lion, a symbol of power and leadership. The Square in a Glance The square is surrounded by several corporate headquarters of important companies, including the largest Portuguese banks and some of the most famous 5-star hotels in the world. Marquis of Pombal Square is a good area to find accommodation. It's peaceful and very well connected to the rest of the city.

What to say about the Marques de Pombal Monument? I really love this monument in Lisbon, set inside a very busy roundabout, set in the middle of the business district, right in front of the Parque Eduardo VII. It celebrates the Marques de Pombal, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, responsible for rebuilding Lisbon after the earthquake of Nov. 1st, 1755. It's simply magnificent, and I highly recommend it.

I love historical places, took great pictures. I wonder why Athena/Minerva is sitting on a throne. Is she the protector goddess of Portugal?

A symbolic entrance to Lisbon, marked by 2 stone columns in Tagus river. Lively site. Enjoy the river and the boats crossing to the other side. Check out the stone sculptures on the right. If you have luck, you may even find the artist himself stacking the stones in fine balance.

This can be the tiniest beach I’ve seen. However it is a great starting point for a tour of Lissabon. The tourist information is nearby and from here you can see some of the good landmarks. It is also a very romantic place in the evening.

(Translated by Google) 🇪🇸 🇵🇹 When Portugal was a maritime empire, fleets of up to five hundred ships departed or arrived, at the same time or in turns, at the port of Lisbon, which was for centuries one of the most important in the world. Already then, the Terreiro do Paço (now the Commerce Square) opened the arms of the city to them. And today, the "Pier of the Columns" / Cais das Colunas are the extremities, we would almost say the fingers, of that hug to the river, like a girl who washes her hands on the banks of it.

(Translated by Google) The Statue of the Marquis of Pombal is located in the square with the same name, formerly called Rotunda, it was here that the decisive events that led to the proclamation of the Portuguese republic took place on October 5, 1910. The square pays tribute to Sebastião José de Carvalho and Melo statesman who led the country to the era of the Enlightenment, having ruled between 1750 and 1777. His image is at the top of the column with his hand resting on a lion symbol of power with his eyes turned towards downtown, the city center of Lisbon that Pombal rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake.

(Translated by Google) The Praça Marquês de Pombal [ˈpɾasɐ mɐɾˈkeʃ dɯ põˈbaɫ] is a square in the Portuguese capital Lisbon that is located between Avenida da Liberdade and Parque Eduardo VII. In the middle of the square is a statue of the first Marquis of Pombal, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, inaugurated in 1934, after whom the square itself is named. The column is 36 meters high and the statue on top is nine meters high. With the construction of the Avenida da Liberdade after the 1755 earthquake, it was now possible to expand the city further north. In order to allow Avenida da Liberdade to end appropriately and at the same time to provide opportunities for branching out in different directions, the incumbent Prime Minister and urban planner Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the Marquês de Pombal, decided to create a new urban square. In 1882 there was a proposal by the population to honor the Marquês de Pombal in the daily life of Lisbon, so it was decided to erect a monument for it. Due to some financial and political problems, the Lisbon city government only started this project in 1914. The foundation was founded in 1917, but the bronze statue was inaugurated only 17 years later, on May 13, 1934. Mai 1934.

A trip to Portugal is not complete without a visit to Lisboa and surroundings! The beautiful open plaza Cais das Colunas is on the iconic tram route and a great stop to jump off and explore! Go up the busy street and visit the first pasteis de bacalhau restaurant (YUMM!) Portugal is famous for a lot of things and this is one of them! Enjoy the tasty foods on the steps while watching the waves rhythmically crash, sea gulls around and listen to a street musician play in the background. From Lisboa just a small trip to Belem, you can visit the maritime museum, take a stroll along water and visit the tower of Belem. And while walking in history, treat yourself to another one of Portugal's tasty treats: pasteis de nata. In Belem is the first house of pasteis de nata, known as pasteis de Belem here.

(Translated by Google) This historical column, where the Praça do Commercio, the Trade Square meets the Tejo River, is the pier Cais das Colunas. Stairs made of marble descend into the water towards the pillars and the pillars disappear there. It is really nice to watch the river that looks like Çanakkale or Istanbul Strait from here. This was the point where a noble entrance to the city was made. Famous state people and figures set foot in Lisbon from here. In 1957, Queen Elizabeth entered the city from here. These simple columns bearing the water trail that gave this pier its name were designed by architect Eugenio dos Santos and were erected as part of the reconstruction of the city after the earthquake of 1755. Although there is no clear document on the exact date of the pier, it is said to have been built in the late 1700s. The columns were taken in the late 1800s and erected again in 1929. Again, within the scope of the subway construction works between 1999 and 2008, the columns were removed from here. These columns, replicating the columns thought to be at Solomon's Temple, represent wisdom and devotion. (Original) Praça do Commercio yani Ticaret Meydanı'nın Tejo Nehri ile buluştuğu bu tarihi sütun iskeledir Cais das Colunas. Mermerden merdivenler sütunlara doğru suya iner ve sütunların orada kaybolur. Buradan Çanakkale veya İstanbul Boğazı'na benzeyen nehri izlemek gerçekten güzel. Burası tarihten şehre soylu bir giriş yapılan noktaymış. Ünlü devlet insanları ve figürler buradan Lizbon'a ayak basmışlar.

The « Express Lisboa Viva » is an Absolute Joke: you pay 12€ for nothing. Dropped off the papers on Friday, was supposed to be ready on Monday, today Wednesday and still finding Excuses ´the Card isn’t Ready, come back tomorrow’ 🥺

Heart of Lisbon, everything is nearby Metro, Bus, restaurants, shops, markets etc, beautiful roundabout with park and underground subway. Seems every new arrival must visit this place.

Set in the centre of a very busy roundabout is the brilliant white column topped with a statue of the Marquis of Pombal with a lion at his feet. This is a must see when visiting Lisbon.

Super cool landmark in Lisbon. Don’t miss out when you are in Lisbon. Especially with the sunset as background! Only thing you have to care is the traffic when you are walking around the statue.

This was a very important historical figure for modern-day Portugal. Learning about him and his part in history at the story of Lisban was very helpful in knowing his significance. The monument is full of symbolism and is very powerful. I've enjoyed learning about this man and his participation in the history of the city as we know it today.

This very large and impressive square honors a much conflicted by history persona. Huge statue surrounded by residences, cafes, storefronts and hotels. It is the location for hop on hop off buses. For us it was an easy walk to our hostel.

We went there between Christmas and new year. There were quite many fun activities, such as photo boots, ferries wheel, Christmas food etc. Super fun for the kids and families.
