Amazing building, used to be a church and you can see how much work had been done to build it. You can go around the building in different level inside and outside and have a good view of the building as well as the beautiful Lisbon.

Impressive views from the top of the dome well worth the climb up. You won't be disappointed! Also includes the resting place of many notable Portuguese people throughout history.

Beautiful building! Please take the time to visit, you won't regret it. A little bit of history, beautiful architecture and design, incredible 360 view from the top. The view alone is worth it. Sit up there for a while and enjoy the air. Keep in mind, there are a lot of stairs and it is colder/windy at the top so take the time to snap some pics on each floor if you need the rest and maybe bring a scarf or sweater.

Absolutely breathtaking. There is a little bit of a climb on the hill to get to the National Pantheon, but wow is it amazing. Free to enter if you have the Lisboa card, the views inside are great. Keep in mind you can go upstairs, but there is only one stairwell going up and one stairwell going down. There are few places to sit down inside, so keep aware. Once climb up to the top, you are treated to a wonderful view of the city below. This is the only example of Baroque architecture in Lisbon as far as I know. Well worth the visit!

Stunning monument to the great and good of Portugal. Amazing view across Lisbon from the terrace (albeit very windy). Temporary exhibition on the relationship to French Pantheon was very insightful.

A must place to visit. A place where you have a great panoramic view of the city and its harbour part. The building itself is beauty aswell, and with its important role in the history of Lisbon, with important people graved being located there. It even is a more must visit. Its near a busstop or 5 min walk from a tramstop.

The National Pantheon (€4 per person) was originally the Church of Santa Engracia built in the late 17th century in Baroque style. It was then converted into the National Pantheon in 1916. The building is massive and imposing with a massive centre dome. It is the resting place of many important historical Portuguese figures with tombs and cenotaphs that you can see in the ground floor corner rooms. You can also walk up several series of staircases that take you to higher levels of the Pantheon, where you have elevated views of the nave area down below. Walk all the way to the top and you can enter the rooftop area where you also have remarkable views of the surrounding Alfama neighbourhood and Tagus River. Views are very impressive here when sky conditions are favourable.

This is a magnificent example of grand classical architecture. Visitors are granted free access to climb all the staircases up into the dome. The interiors views were magnificent. One is permitted to to go out on the roof where one has a fine view of a beautiful city. The admission price was trivial. Well worth a visit.

I arrived at this place by pure luck. I love walking around the cities I visit to discover things by myself. And while walking around beautiful Lisbon I bumped into this magnificent building. I went in and they asked me if I wanted to visit inside. The building reminded me of the Pantheon in Paris which I love so I decided to buy the ticket and come inside. The first thing that caught my eye was a photographic exhibition of people of determination ( or Special Needs people as they're called in Europe). I was touched by the images and the content.. After I walked around in the ground floor and saw some of the tombs of Presidents and famous Portuguese Writers and Explorers I decided to go up the stairs. I ended up in the most fantastic Miradour in the whole of Lisbonne. 360 degrees of sheer beauty. The whole of the city right under your eyes. I was so happy to be there I sat down facing the glorious morning sun and stayed there for 2 hours. There was hardly anyone there The next day I brought my son along and he was delighted with the place and took beautiful photos. We both absolutely loved this place. Worth a visit a 100%.. I would go back there any time.

Originally it was the Church of St. Engrasia. It was only under Salazar's rule in 1966 that this building became the National Pantheon of Portugal. More than 10 famous and respected writers, presidents, football players are buried here.... There are also cenotaphs (empty coffins erected in memory of the deceased, whose body is buried elsewhere) such personalities as: - Vashko da Gama -Luis di Camoes -Nuno Alvarez Pereira, -Pedro Alvarish Cabral - Afonso de Albuquerque - Henry the Navigator. Now about the history - in 1568, by order of Infanta Maria, daughter of King Manuel I, the church of St. Engrasia was built. And even earlier, a monastery was located on this place. But in 1681, that church was destroyed and the construction of this current building began.... It was built for only 300 years, even the expression *construction of Santa Engracia* arose - something that is being built for a very long time....

We have visited Lisbon many times before and ashamed to say we had not ascended up the steep streets to see The Pantheon . Wow! It's amazing and beautiful. Free access for disabled ( take ID or some documents). Bit tricky over the cobbles on my mobility scooter but So glad we saw it on this trip

I think that this place is one of my favorite buildings I've been in while touring Lisbon. It's meticulous and really open. There's not a lot of furniture clutter so you can just truly appreciate the beauty of the building. I went by it several times during my stay. I enjoyed seeing it while I was there for the market which is just outside of it on Saturdays.

Fantastic monument to some very influential people in Portugal. Very grounding experience as you walk into the space. It used to be a former church and was transformed. You can get up pretty high in the museum, definitely worth visiting each level. There is also passageway to the rooftop which has pretty fantastic views of Lisbon! Put it in your list to visit if you have the chance, tickets were very manageable and we're about 6euro I believe

Spectacular! The church is really big, inside is really nice with tombs of Portuguese celebrities of the past and the present (Vasco da Gama, Eusebio and so on). The First three floors are walkable and the view is nice but the main spot here is the terrace, the fourth floor where you can see Lisbon Port and the sea from above. The entrance is free on Sunday for Portuguese, otherwise is 4 euro (there are other reduced entrance) options. Recommended.

The National Pantheon is set beneath the historic Alfama hill, on the opposite slope from downtown. It's huge classic Baroque dome is visible from many parts of Lisbon. The Pantheon is in fact the Church of Santa Engratia which was started as early as 16c by orders of Princess Maria, daughter of King Manuel. However, it was finished only in 20 c and saw a very turbulent history - the first Church collapsed, then the main architect of the second Church died leaving it unfinished, then it was converted into barracks and arms factory when religion was banned in 19c. Finally it was finished in early 20c becoming a National Pantheon. Famous figures of Portugal modern history are buried here, whose tombs you can visit in side rooms, while historic figures from discoveries period have their cenotaphs here in the main hall, but are buried elsewhere. Interiors are really amazing, very rich all in marble. Do climb the Dome - great views of those interiors from above, and then exit outside on the terrace to admire Lisbon and Tagus river views.

This is a good experience in Lisbon only €4 per person and you can go to the roof terrace and round the dome. Very good price for doing this as been to many cities and you have to pay a lot more or extra. Beautiful building inside and out

A bid of an odd collection of tombs, especially considering that many of them are empty. But the building is impressive and the terrace on the top has wonderful views and is a nice place to relax. Definitely worth the entry fee.

Church of Santa Engrácia feels, and looks like a poor second cousin to the Dome of Les Invalides in Paris, on which it was clearly modeled. It holds the remains of some Portuguese national heroes and important personages. It's free to enter unless you wanna go up to the top of the dome which you do have to pay for. Overall, nice enough, but underwhelming.

The national pantheon is a huge, fantastic piece of architecture. Situated centrally, impresses you from outside with it's massive yet artful structure. The ticket is included in the Lisbon card else it is 8€ Once inside, you are greeted by a very large circular hall and tombs and stairs on one side to go up to the rooftop gallery. Rooftop gallery offers 360 views of the city and sea. Also, an impressive dome keeps you entertained. The stairs are little difficult, no elevator and keep going up. It is so tall that sometimes you feel vertigo looking down on the circular hall inside. There's also a tomb of vasco de gama here.

The National Pantheon-Church of Santa Engrácia is the only example of Baroque architecture in Portugal. It stands on one of the hills in the eastern part of Lisbon, facing the river. Beautiful interior and exterior, nice views over the city from the roof. Definitely worth a visit!!

Amazing, imposing and impressive building with beautiful views of the city after a worthwhile climb to the top. I can't speak to the significance of the people buried here, but because of their hyper specific role in Portuguese culture and the lack of any context given by the Pantheon, this place falls flat in terms of the potential informational/historical value. It is indeed saved by the amazing grandeur of it all, but don't expect some sort of museum.

Located in the Alfama neighbourhood, we visited at the end of February, on a Tuesday in the early afternoon. Was 8€ per person & worth it! Tickets may need to be purchased in advance in the busy season, however it was pretty quiet when we went. We didn’t wait in line and walked right in. You can explore the main level and read the snippets of information surrounding the construction, originally being a church and later changed to the national pantheon. And eventually turned to a national monument in 1910(after the ending of the monarchy & start of the republic). There are also many national personalities buried here, mostly recent including poets, a soccer player, philosophers etc. As you travel up stairs, there’s varying levels to stop and overlook the center of the pantheon. At the top you have the choice to walk around highest point of the dome or travel outside to overlook of the Tagus River and Lisbon. It’s a great representation of the Baroque style & beautiful to see, especially when the sun shines in.

One of the main tourist destinations is the National Pantheon,I was amazed by the size of the structure both inside and out. On some days, there is a market in the above street. Also don't miss the stunning marble artwork behind the monument.

  • 5/5 Sibole S. 3 years ago on Google
Loved the architecture. If it were still a church I would have taken the time to enter as I have spent time sitting on the steps. I heard a couple of tourists: "is it a church" she asked and he answered " no, people live in it". This made me smile. Living opposite the Santa Apolonia station I passed there daily. The basilica always drew my eye.

Interesting and beautiful place showing monuments to portugese heroes and legends. Worth a visit. You’ll learn Lots The 4th floor also has beautiful views of the city!!! Friendly service and reasonably priced. They give 50% off for students

Really excellent views from the top. I would say that this place would be more interesting to the Portuguese tourist maybe. Vasco da Gama is entombed there. The Monastery of São Vicente de Fora is right up the hill and to me, is much more interesting and with better views.

Interesting place with a fascinating history. I strongly recommend reading its history before you visit this place. Make sure you go to the roof of the Pantheon. It has a magnificent view. The area is not crowded. The entrance price is five euros as of June 2022.

Just an incredible building with amazing views from the upper open terrace. So very worth the four euro charge.

Church of Santa Engrácia feels, and looks like a poor second cousin to the Dome of Les Invalides in Paris, on which it was clearly modeled. It holds the remains of some Portuguese national heroes and important personages. Its free to enter unless you wanna go up to the top of the dome which you do have to pay for. Overall, nice but underwhelming.

It’s only $5 to visit but it’s a fairly quick tour, TONS of stairs to climb to get to a great view of Lisbon up on the rooftop. Not for the faint of heart, but that’s the most interesting part of the visit! The pantheon itself is mostly seeing the tombs of famous Portuguese people: Amalia Rodrigues, Eusebio, etc the plus of this entire experience is that there are NO LINES of tourist to fight through!!!

It take s a little effort to reach the National Pantheon on the beautiful Lisbon cobblestone streets. Once inside (paid entrance) you have access to the top with great views of the city.

Impressive and beautiful building. Famous Portugese people have been laid to rest here like the famous explorer Vasco Da Gama.

It’s impressive! You walk across it and keep thinking—how did they build this? The architecture is outstanding, and the place is hypnotizing. I wouldn’t say it is a MUST in Lisbon, but if you already saw the “classic”, the National Pantheon is a great place to go. If you are resident, it’s for free on Sundays morning.

Beautiful and fascinating building. It's definitely worth the price of admission to experience its splendor and the amazing views. Also, good exercise climbing to the top.

Thrilling adventure around the cathedral’s inside dome terrace…I must confess there was a vertigo moment in trying to take incredible photos from high above the beautiful tiled floor. On top of this experience, you get to go outside too and see incredible city vista of river and rooftops. Grand architecture marvel that is easy to walk to and fun to see.

Very beautiful views and building. Lots of, optional stairs, to reach the rooftop and upper, interior balcony. It is well worth the climb! Good place to cool off and take your time enjoying the serenity. Only 4 EUR to get in and there was no line in the morning. Great place to stop by!

This is a magnificent building both inside and out. Lots of history if you take the time to read it. Take the stairs to the various landing and you will be rewarded with terrific viewing of the interior spaces. At the top you can exit to the roof for some gram vistas of the city. Overall worth the price of admission. We give it four clams on the coveted Five Quahog Rating Scale.

Very beautiful pantheon. Not too much to see inside besides some memorials for famous Portuguese personalities. The roof terrace was beautiful and had an amazing view over the city. Entrance is 4€ for and adult but there was a 50% student discount.

Amazing! One of the few places in Lisbon that there was no queue. Included entry on Lisbon Card and amazing views out over the Tagus and the city. The view inside down to the floor from the gallery was a tad scary but beautiful. Totally recommend

supper beautifull!! (note no flash photography) maybe we went on a Tuesday and it was raining + it wasn't tourist season so it wasn't too crowded.

  • 4/5 Ivan D. 5 months ago on Google
I'd only recommend going there if you've got the free entry with Lisboa card as there isn't much to experience apart from the views and polished tombs of important people to Portuguese history.

Amazing to walk to the top plaza for magnificient views and photo opportunities. The condition of this monument is inpecable and shows the important magnitude of those burried there.

It is beautiful inside, a marble patchwork marvel, well worth a visit. The dome gallery is like a mini St Paul's and it opens onto the roof terrace with spectacular 360 degree views. Over 180 steps up though so prepare yourself. Worth 8 Euro entry but it would be free with a Lisboa Card.

👍👍 Beautiful place. It's such a pleasure to be here in any season in full sun or under the moon. The Belem tower is awesome ! This fortress in the middle of the Tagus has been the starting point for the navigators who set out to discover the trade routes. The expansive spirit is still present here. En...
