A little jewel off the beaten tourist track but well worth the trip. The displays have loads of African and Portuguese exhibits that I have not seen in other places.I especially liked the African masks and the Angolan lids for pots where the top is carved to represent a proverb- cooking meeting common wisdom! They have a section covering the Amazon which can be seen by appointment and for groups bigger than 5. The video looked enticing so I will try and schedule a visit. Loved that they have an energy saving system where lights switch on/off as you move between areas,an innovation that I think many more museums should use, sustainability should cover all types of buildings after all. Definitely a good 2 hours spent for the visit.

A lovely little museum. It's a single large room with a well designed exhibition. There are explanations, but most are only in Portuguese. It's out of the way for tourists, so we we had the entire thing for ourselves, which is really nice.

Thank you for allowing us in just in the nick of time. It shows that the assistant at the entrance cares that anyone can learn about ethnicities and cultures. Even though the museum only had one exposition it was very good and by that I mean it was informative and separated into various countries and categories. At the entrance there is a place with lockers to put food or other objects that can't enter the expositions. Overall it was an amazing experience and I couldn't ask for more.

Maybe if you can see the semi-open collections will be interesting. The permanent exhibition is small and is very diverse, not really telling a story.

(Translated by Google) The National Museum of Ethnography with a collection that brings together objects from various parts of the world. The permanent exhibit of the Museum includes the shadow theater of Bali, the dolls of southwest Angola, the pot covers with Cabinda proverbs, Mali masks and puppets, Portuguese folk musical instruments, the river of honor splints and the Franquelim sculpture that results mostly from collections studied through an intensive program of internships that the museum has been promoting. Also noteworthy is the possibility of visiting two reserve spaces, the galleries of rural life and the galleries of the Amazon.

This nondescript museum is under construction at the moment. We had a superb guided tour through the warehouse. A real must-see of local and colonial artifacts. Ask in advance when the guided tours take place.

(Translated by Google) A space that evokes ethnic and cultural roots, it lacks an improvement in multifunctional and multimedia resources. Good about museography and collection. The exhibitions are interesting, and worth the visit. However, make sure you're there in time for the guided tours to the collections (which normally are closed to the public)! The guides speak English, but knowing some Portuguese doesn't hurt. The unique collection of wooden agricultural implements demonstrates the transformation of Portugal in the last 60 years in an eye opening way! The food in the snack bar is "home made", and worth a try.

We visited the museum as part of the Lisboa card and it was the best experience so far. Compared to the crowds of people and waiting in lines, there was peace here. There was only one other couple besides us. The cashier was very pleasant and introduced us to both exhibitions that are currently underway. I recommend to visit.

The entrance is complimentary with a Lisboa card. There was a temporary photography exhibition about resilient women who support their families and communities. I rather enjoyed the exhibition. The permanent exhibition is also quite impressive. Given its modest size, I would say that one hour is sufficient to view it, if you are pressed for time. The staff are courteous and there are lockers for your bags (not all museums in Portugal offer this service), which is convenient for tourists like us.

Just didn't understand why one exposition was closed, so people can only see the main exposition on the bottom floor, the temporary one, but the one on the 1st floor is closed, and I think only opens for visits. It's sad that they don't share all the beauty they have, for everyone, all the time. Hope this can be seen as an improvement. Staff is nice and friendly. I believe the museum is bigger than it looks, if they open all the spaces.

Small museum, takes about 90 Minutes to look at everything. It's worth it if you want to do something that doesn't take a lot of time. Download the Google lens so you can translate the Portuguese descriptions. Not everything is explained in English.

  • 4/5 Nuno F. 2 years ago on Google
The permanent exhibition is rather small given the scale of the building the museum occupies, which tricks you into expecting more. Nevertheless the pieces shown are very interesting and we'll organized, and the top-notch lighting really favours the overall impression. Although every item displayed has the corresponding explanation, they could benefit from more historic and geographic context. The lady in charge with selling the tickets, offered no explanation/guidance whatsoever on what was available to visit so we had to find our own way to the temporary and permanent exhibitions.
