The museum is clearly closed for refurbishment (and I have reported this to Google) so not sure why it’s still shown as open. The collection is completely inaccessible and the foyer being used as a ticket office for the Jeronimos Monastery.

Cute little museum located right next door to the Jeronimos Monastery. Be careful that you don't confuse the line for the monastery with the line for the Archeology Museum.

Part of the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. Museum is good place to visit while you are visiting the monastery.

Get your tickets to the Monestary here! If you have time, this is a decent museum to get a sample of Portugal's past. It helps you compare and contrast to other places, as there are Roman, Egyptian, and other artifacts in this small museum. If you are here for less than three days, you may choose other more notable museums/sights (like the amazing neighboring Monastery and Cathedral). I wish there were clearer expectations of what is exhibited in the signage outside. The exhibits were nice, but not extensive nor expansive. The history of jewelery was my highlight. If you have visited Rome or Cairo before, you will not be impressed. You will leave more knowledgeable on Portugal though!

It is closed. Didn't bother to update website or Google. Not sure how a visitor is supposed to know this? Not a happy camper. But the monastery and church next door were terrific!

Terrible. Don't waste your time or money. The Egyptian collection is meagre, the Lusitania religions exhibit okay but poorly laid out. The staff, rude and surly.

The museum is small and majority of things are in Portuguese. The staff is rude, aggressive, and discriminatory. They are not open to communicate. When we were buying tickets we provided them an official EU disability card from Belgium but they rudely started to say that “it’s not acceptable as 60% disability since it’s not written on it. This is Portugal so Portugal laws apply.”. They keep repeating things like this. We understand that there could be differences among EU countries but the poor and disrespectful communication of the staff was really unnecessary. They could have explained it much more calmer and understanding way. This poor experience ruined our visit. We definitely DO NOT recommend this museum.

Small meusum with three sections: Egyptian antiquities, treasures of Portuguese archaeology and Religions of Lusitania(Portugal during the Roman era). The Egyptian antiquities part is all in Portuguese and no English but photography is allowed. The treasure of Portuguese archeology is photography prohibited but English is included. Only the Lusitania part is where you can take photos and it has English text support. Less than half an hour to see the whole meusum. I don't think it's worth the time. Only because it's located next to the Jerónimos Monastery I decided to see it.

Great, the one single place I was eager to see in Portugal's capital is closed... Not one year, no just make it three years! It's a shame that treasures of thousands of years are hidden from the public for this long!!! Maybe they should just stay in the places they were found in the first place and not stoel and put behind bars!!! I've seen museums doing restaurations and still keep the majority of the exponates open for the public.... Well, that will cut my visit very short and I'll make my way to the Prado in Madrid - Spain is much cheaper in every way anyways...

(Translated by Google) The National Archeology Museum (MNA) is the main national archaeological museum in Portugal. Located in Lisbon, the museum was founded in 1893 on the initiative of José Leite de Vasconcelos. The museum is located in the western wing of the Jerónimos Monastery, where the former dormitory of the Monastery was located, in the 19th century Neo-Manueline style facilities, provided by government decision of 20 November 1900, beginning its transfer in 1903 and opening doors in 1906. The MNA results from the effort of José Leite de Vasconcelos (1858-1941) to create a “Museum of the Portuguese Man”. With the sponsorship of Bernardino Machado, it was created, by royal decree of December 20, 1893, as “Museu Ethnographico Português”. As a century-old institution, it has been subordinated over the years to several entities and has seen its name change four times, becoming, since 1989, the National Museum of Archeology of Dr. Leite de Vasconcelos. In more than a century of existence, this Museum has become the reference institution of Portuguese Archeology with regular correspondence with museums, universities and research centers worldwide. It was designed by José Leite de Vasconcelos to be the “Museu do Homem Português”, a dream that has intensified with his archaeological investigation. For José Leite de Vasconcelos, "what, therefore, should be sought mainly in the Museum is the scientific method of classification and arrangement, so that objects fall, so to speak, more to the visitor's intelligence than to the eyes. Do not be surprised if, next to of a beautiful flint, bone or ivory instrument, if you see a shard, or if at the foot of a marble statue there is a broken description: it is that sometimes, just for a shard, by the nature of its paste, by its surface smoothed or rough, by its border, by its ornamentation, a date and a historical affiliation could be determined, and only by the fragment of an epigraphe an important problem could also be solved, the exact situation of an oppidum, the deciphering of a obscure litterario text, the restitution of a word, or even of an old language ". As a centenary institution, it has been subordinated over the years to several entities and has seen its name change four times, calling itself, since 1989, the National Museum of Archeology of Dr. Leite de Vasconcelos. The directors who followed him supported the carrying out of archaeological excavations whose assets reverted to the museum, but they were committed, above all, to the study of the collection that had been accumulated without, however, having been treated, opening the MNA collections “for study and publication, by archeologists and history graduates, with thesis elaboration on, in whole, or in part, unpublished materials kept in the Museum ”. Today, the MNA continues with the same basic vocation, that is, to tell the story of the settlement of our territory, from its origins to the foundation of nationality. This is where Portugal's main archaeological research center is located: for the collections it has, for the technical resources it possesses, for the space it occupies at the Jerónimos Monastery (a real center of confluence of nationals and foreigners, with special emphasis on schools in the Country, who annually seek the educational service of the Museum). The MNA has several services aimed at fulfilling the museological functions provided for in the Portuguese Museums Framework Law, from which the Inventory and Collections Service stands out, which systematically organizes and manages collections according to research needs, as well as exhibitions and assignments of cultural goods, and the Conservation and Restoration Laboratory, which intervenes mainly in cultural assets of the MNA, or which integrate exhibits there, and monitors the atmospheric conditions of the exhibition spaces. The Museum presents the Egyptian Antiquities and the Treasures of Portuguese Archeology, as permanent exhibitions, and frequently organizes temporary exhibitions on different themes.

(Translated by Google) You are in the ticket queue, you see the combined ticket and you wonder is it worth entering the museum or not? If you really like Egyptian history and Roman / pre Roman jewelry yes. It is small but the difference in price 1 or 2 € with the combined ticket is worth it. If you don't like it very much, better not go in. For being a National archaeological museum it is poor but being quiet makes up for something.

An informative small museum housed in the Jeronimos Monastery. It is not very large, but there are some interactive exhibits that allow you to touch certain ancient artefacts. The Stone Age and Roman era sections are quite well done. To enter the section with the gold artefacts one must go through security and put phones in clear plastic bags. There is no real need for this level of security (gold is not affected by cameras) and the actual artefacts are less impressive than in many other museums.

The COVID protocols caused the ticket line to be unnecessarily long (and ironically COVID unsafe). Guests were forced to use ticket machines, one at a time, that take a while longer to navigate than the regular ticket desk. It took 45 minutes for approximately the 12 people in front of us to purchase tickets. I can't imagine how long it took for the 100+ that were in line by the time we left. I can think of a dozen ways to move people through faster without jeopardizing COVID safety. The archeology museum is ok. It's not as Portuguese centric as I expected. The Roman era is interesting. The St Jerome monestery, which uses the same ticket line, is spectacular. The architecture and stone artistry of the building and church are as gorgeous as any in Europe.

The space is quite tight for the size and number of pieces on display. Almost complete absence of description let along explanation on the items displayed and the few attempts made are through unnecessarily complex and abstract quotes. The staff seemed tired, stressed and could barely communicate in English.

The best place if you want to know history of Portugal, starting with the Palaeolithic. The guide was able to interest in what he said and answered the questions reasonably. Definitely something for lovers of archeology if you want to explore on your own. However, I recommend paying extra and visiting with a guide.

Some of the conference rooms have great massive glass walls looking out into the gardens (which is very nice - sometimes a little distracting when kids are playing in the gardens -maybe I need to learn to concentrate more.)

One of the most amazing museum i have visited in my life. Fantastic collection, from antiquity to 21st century. BUt what really amazed me the most is the way these objects are displayed in a simple and harmonious way. In some museums it is very easy to be overwhelmed by the number of displayed objects where as here, you can just appreciate each one of the pieces displayed.

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. We spent a wonderful time there, roaming from place to place, from Asia to Manet, from Persia to Burne-Jones and Eropean furniture to Lalique. More explanation would be interesting but the sheer quality of the selected objects and their diversity was enough to fill me with a wonder I only felt in NY's Met - the human scale allowing to span the whole place in two densely packed hours. A must-see.

Lots of free cultural events, just make sure you get the tickets even if it's a free event. Mostly guidance is only in Portuguese so might be good to know. Sunday afternoons you have free entrance to the museum's which is great

Located in Belem, adjacent to Jeronimos Monastery, this museum is a perfect place to visit if you are interested in archaeology. It has artifacts from Paleolithic to Middle Ages time. There is also the Egyptian section which is amazing, but it is not allowed to take pictures there. Price 5 euro for adults, 50% discount for seniors, youth cardholders and students. for Children under 14 the entrance is free

(Translated by Google) The National Archeology Museum was founded in 1893 by José Leite de Vasconcelos and is located next to the Jerónimos Monastery, in Belém in the city of Lisbon in Portugal, it is a relatively small museum, but it has a very rich collection and houses the Portugal's largest archaeological collection, the exhibitions include articles and objects ranging from the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages. One of the highlights of the Museum is the collection of gold objects, coins and vessels in the room dedicated to Egypt, where you can also see real mummies of people and animals, in addition to a very cool collection of old photographs.

(Translated by Google) Very weak, thank goodness we had the Lisbon card and we have not clapped the 5e that the ticket is worth. The treasures were good. A few very similar Egyptian jewels. Maybe I don't have the knowledge to appreciate it. It took us barely half an hour to see it.

👍👍 Beautiful place. It's such a pleasure to be here in any season in full sun or under the moon. The Belem tower is awesome ! This fortress in the middle of the Tagus has been the starting point for the navigators who set out to discover the trade routes. The expansive spirit is still present here. En...
