Stopped in for a class while in Lisbon. Very welcoming environment. Class was in English and they made great effort to translate anything I needed. So grateful for the knowledge and experience I was able to learn from! Hoping to be back someday!

Great school. Drop in fee 20 euros covered the class and rental of pants and rash guard, amazing. The gym has showers and lockers, bring a towel. High level training partners. Summer is no gi season. Recommend.

Incredibly friendly gym, the instructors are fantastic and super friendly. Very welcoming environment, I really enjoyed the evening classes, both gi and no gi. I had a private lesson with Professor Helio which I found immensely helpful. Would absolutely recommend.

Fantastic school to visit if you are living in or just visiting Lisbon. Extremely welcoming environment, great talent from the head coach and can accommodate all levels. All students in the class were friendly and provided great rolls! OSS

Visited Lisbon for the month of January and trained at this gym multiple times a week. The standard of the mixed and advanced classes (blue belt and above) were incredibly high and very enjoyable. What really stood out to me was how welcoming everyone once, I felt like I was training at my home gym. Great atmosphere and culture at this gym, making myself and my girlfriend feel very comfortable. Helio and Miguel do a great job of running this gym. Next time I am in Lisbon I will definitely be making a return!

Very clean facility and also super knowledgeable instructors in all aspects of Brazilian Jiu jitsu. Self defense, conditioning, competition fighting and more. Definitely recommend training here. Blue belt competitor from the Netherlands.

I joined a class at Five Elements Jiu Jitsu while visiting Lisbon and had such a positive experience. The instructors and the students were welcoming, friendly, and knowledgeable. I would 100% recommend stopping by to try a class.

Amazing Jiu Jitsu club! Everyone super friendly and welcoming of English speaker (learning Portuguese!) and of someone who is a total beginner to the sport. I was apprehensive to try Jiu Jitsu at first but my introduction was made easy thanks to this academy. Big thanks to Helio in particular who has introduced me Jiu Jitsu, a great coach, patient, kind and clearly has a deep understanding of Jiu Jitsu. Would highly recommend for anyone!

I have been training here for months now. Great environment, attention and focus for all the students at any level. Gym is clean and the instructors are amazing, always willing to explain and to help. Classes in English and Portuguese. Always feeling home when I train.

I had one lesson here while on a short holiday in Lisbon. I felt very welcome by the instructor and in general there was a very nice atmosphere in the gym. I enjoyed the teaching style and I felt the instructor really helped to ensure everyone understood the technique properly. I will definitely be back next time I’m in Lisbon!

We couldn’t be happier that our son joined the Five Elements family.. our son is 6 and has already participated in a tournament and attended a seminar with Royce Gracie, that should be enough said.. but Master’s Hélio & Miguel and staff are super positive, in total control and have apparently giving my son a sense of confidence with a great mount & arm bar, though he’s not aggressive. Everyone we’ve met through the school are kind people and it’s international, just go..

Great place to train! I am a blue belt w/ 2.5 years training and I will say this instructor is extremely friendly and great at teaching. The class has all levels of experience. It was one hour of warm up, technique, positional sparring, and the option to roll afterwards. A good balance of welcoming culture and very talented, competitive players. Just what a Jiu Jitsu class should be. Will be returning next time I'm in Lisbon!

I trained at 5 Elements while on vacation in Lisbon and would 100% recommend it to locals and visitors alike. Helio and his students were super welcoming and everyone had very solid jujitsu. Zero ego on the mat and it was clear that everyone was there to get better and help each other improve.

I am in Lisbon, for two weeks and did drop-in class at Five Elements Jiu-Jitsu Academy, place is really clean, coaches are very welcoming, helped me with renting gi, which was really low price in comparison to other academies, all the practitioners on the mat are really good and welcoming guys. Professor Helio did class on English because of me and am really thankful for that. Overall everything was really smooth and had a great experience. Very recommended. Thank you again.

I was in Lisbon for just a few days and only had the chance to join a no gi class at this school and was received with open arms as if I had trained there my whole life. The people were cool and their jiujitsu was good… respectful, very clean and organized space from the mats to the showers. A spot I’d highly recommend and go back to

Location is ok, but there's no free trial, if it is your first time practicing you need to pay €20. The academy had 2 floors with mats, lockers and showers but only 1 toilet for some reason. I was told there was a open mat followed by an intermediate/mix level class but when I got there I was told to go upstairs and participate in the beginners class. This would have been fine as I believe fundamentals are very important, but the class was taught by a purple belt who kept calling an Americana lock by kimura even after one of the students tried to correct him, instead of recognising he was wrong he decided to tell the story about Kimura/Gracie fight 🤷🏼‍♂️ Downstairs is extremely warm and damp without any type of ventilation. I felt a big distance between coloured and white belts, but I can say the students have a good atmosphere between them. The coach who spoke to me and arranged my visit was nice. To summarize, if you live in Lisbon, don't know any other academies and have some money to spare this is an option, even if it's just your gateway to the arte suave.

A little late posting this - apologies! But it was fantastic to train here. The term ‘friendly killers’ seems right; they were welcoming, great coaching overall a good group. Easy to find (although I took a taxi), nice changing facilities and a lot of mat space. Would strongly recommend to anyone visiting Lisbon or living there whether you’re trying bjj for the first time or are a veteran in the sport.

Visiting the beautiful city of Lisbon, I attended a morning class at Five Elements Jiu-Jitsu. Professor Miguel taught the class in english so I would understand. Everybody was friendly and welcoming. It was very easy to attend to the class as I felt like home. I highly suggest you attend a class here if you are visiting Lisbon!

This is a great Academy. The instructors are great and care about our proper technique as much as safety. The children’s classes are fun and engaging for the kids. They build a strong base of respect and collaboration that keeps them interested.

Very friendly gym to train at when visiting Lisbon. The instructors are knowledgeable, friendly and speak perfect English. The facilities in the Rato-located academy are clean and of good standard. They are due to be refurbished to make them even better !

I trained at Five Elements over a few weeks - the environment was super welcoming and inclusive, the techniques were very well explained and emphasised the self defence element of Brazilian Jiujitsu, and the coaches were knowledgeable and attentive. Would 100% recommend and look forward to visiting again.

As I am new in Lisbon, I was looking for a bjj club and I fund a great place with excellent professors and nice teammates. Can't wait to see how this season is going to be. I recommend you 5EJ rato if you want to train, learn and have fun. Kristo.

I visited Portugal from the US for about 4 weeks and wanted to train while abroad. I found this gym close by my AirBnb and messaged Professor Helio, was promptly replied to with very kind words and a welcoming demeanor! Upon visiting the professors and students were very friendly and welcoming. They spoke English very well when they were explaining techniques and everyone was very helpful and supportive, as you except from a bjj gym! Gym was clean and I had a great time training! I recommend this place to anyone and everyone!! Thanks Professors Helio and Miguel!!

Trained here for a month while visiting Lisbon and had a great time. The instructors are extremely knowledgeable and take their time to ensure every student understands what is being taught. It is a friendly and welcoming academy with very skilled and competitive students. There is no ego and everyone genuinely wants to improve and see others improve. Great group and a very tight knit feel. Highly recommend to new and existing students alike. Obrigado Hélio!

I had the most wonderful experience dropping in at Five Elements Rato. From my first email Professor Helio was nothing but friendly and welcoming. Upon arrival all of the students were very friendly and Professor Helio taught an excellent class that was mostly in English (possibly for my benefit). The rolls were tough but friendly. My only regret is that I was only able to train one day but if I am ever in Lisbon again I will certainly make a point to come again. Highly recommend!
