The Praça do Município, as it is known in Portuguese, is aptly named after Lisbon's City Hall located on the eastern side of the square. From its second floor, featuring the colonnade-styled balcony, the Republic of Portugal was proclaimed in 1910. Noteworthy is the fact that a little over 2.5 years prior to the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic, on February 1, 1908, King Carlos I of Portugal was assassinated (along with his son, an heir apparent to the throne), across the street, about 350 feet away, kitty-corner of the Municipal Square (refer to our picture). The square, a few steps west from Praça do Comércio, is a fine example of Pombaline architecture (the dominant style of post-1775 earthquake rebuilding of Lisbon) characteristic to Baixa, the downtown area where the Municipal Square is located, and Chiado. The pavement is truly amazing. Sure, the traditional black and white Portuguese pavement ("calçada portuguesa") is out there, in so many parts of the city, and not even limited to Lisbon squares only but very common to Portugal's urbanscape, but on the Municipal Square it is really beautiful creating awesome optical wavy illusions. In the middle of the square there is the Pillory of Lisbon. Erected after the 1775-earthquake it has barely if ever served as a real public defamation site, with only one person having been executed there.

(Translated by Google) Praça do Município de Lisboa is located in Baixa Pombalina, just away from Praça do Comércio. With a quadrangular shape with a very harmonious paving based on geometric figures with great visual impact, the Square is home to two important landmarks in Lisbon: its Pelourinho and its Town Hall. It is in the 14th century, the first time that the existence of a pillory in Lisbon is mentioned and it is located near Terreiro do Paço next to the Fernandina Wall and which was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake. The current one, in the center of the square, dates from 1886 and is from the 19th century with some Manueline signs, probably from its predecessor. It consists of a monolithic column in marble on an octagonal base with steps. The set culminates with an eight-sided board that supports an armillary sphere. It has been classified as a National Monument since 1910. The Town Hall building is of neoclassical style with a facade topped by a beautiful pediment with sculptures by Célestin Calmels, French artist residing in Portugal. Inside, the central staircase launched by the architect José Luis Monteiro and decorated with works by Portuguese painters such as Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro and José Malhoa is worthy of mention. The original building , a project by Eugénio dos Santos within the scope of the Pombaline restoration in Lisbon , was destroyed by a violent in 1863. It was then rebuilt with a project by the architect Domingos Parente, but in 1996 a new fire affected the upper floors. the restoration was carried out under the direction of the architect Silva Dias that kept the previous design. Praça do Município is part of the Baixa Pombalina complex that deserves an attentive visit for all who want to know the history of Lisbon.

Municipal Square is the location of the Neo-classical City Hall building and a charming Manueline style pillory column. The entire square is surfaced with traditional Portuguese style cobblestones adding to the atmosphere of the square.

Enjoyable stop while exploring the area. The stone work in the ground is incredibly detailed, and the statue in the middle was nicely decorated for the holidays. Also other art pieces in the square made it a fun stop.

Due to its proximity to some of the city's most beautiful buildings, I think the municipal team should boost this square and make it more attractive...here's my advice.

The central plaza of Lisbon, historically serving as the arrival point for ships from Portuguese colonies, where their wares were traded. This location earned the name "Praça do Comércio" or Business Square for this very reason. At the heart of the square stands a statue of José. The surrounding yellow edifices continue to house certain ministerial offices. This square is also a venue for major events such as New Year's Eve celebrations and concerts. During Christmas time, the grandest Christmas tree can be found here. Notably, the sunset from this square offers a breathtaking spectacle.

Square that houses the neoclassical building of Lisbon City Council and a Pelourinho in the center of the square. It is surrounded by Pombaline buildings.

One of our favourites places in Lisbon city to hang out and enjoy the atmosphere. Not very busy on the weekends and a quite place on a Sunday morning to enjoy a nice cup of coffee. A easy walk from the metro and there are some nice shops down the street.
