IOpened in 1884, the Lisbon Zoo was the first park with fauna and flora of the Iberian Peninsula. Several founders - Dr. Pedro Van Der Laan, José Thomaz Sousa Martins and the Baron of Kessler - had the support of several personalities, King D. Fernando II and zoologist José Vicente Barboza do Bocage. The first facilities were located in the Park of São Sebastião da Pedreira, which was given free of charge by its owners. Later, the park moved to Palhavã and on May 28, 1905, new and definitive facilities were inaugurated at Quinta das Laranjeiras. On March 12, 1913, the Zoo was declared an Institution of Public Utility. Numerous consignments of animals from Africa and Brazil have contributed to the Zoo having one of the largest and most diverse collections of animals in the world over the years. In fact, some governors of the former overseas provinces were noted for their contribution to the enrichment of the zoological collection with examples of exotic, little-known and very attractive species. In 1952, the City Council of Lisbon awarded the Zoo with the Gold Medal of the City. The fall of the Estado Novo in 1974 and the consequent independence of the former colonies in Africa meant the breakdown of the strong support given to the Zoo by the authorities in the diversification and renovation of the animal collection. By this time, the number of visitors also decreased substantially and there were radical cuts in state subsidies. Thus, it was necessary to develop and implement a new management strategy for the Zoo, adapting it to the values and needs of the time. In 1990, the new management policy adopted by Félix Naharro Pires, who in the meantime took office as President of the Zoological Garden, had as objectives the modernization of existing facilities as well as services. In this way, specific work areas were created with their own objectives, to improve animal collection and welfare, food and veterinary care. In parallel, commercial services, marketing, public relations and the press were created, in order to energize the Park as a privileged partner of the companies .. Promoting education for conservation among the visiting public was also one of the main concerns, which quickly earned the creation of a service of its own, the Pedagogical Center. Currently, the Zoo represents the role of educator, with the advantage of owning one of the best classrooms in the country, whose animal collection, space and activities provide an attractive and effective learning. The Zoo is no longer a showcase of animals to take an active role in the protection and conservation of Nature. Improved facilities for the animals allowed the birth rate to increase. The Veterinary Hospital opened in 2008 was considered the best in Europe by EAZA - European Association of Zoos and Aquariums. I liked it a lot, it doesn't give you the feeling of being in a zoo, it just seems like you're walking through a park and seeing animals. It took us all day to see it all. There's a very nice dolphin show, also one of the highlights. to eat pelicans and another super cool bird show with a dancing cockatoo🤣. There is a cable car where you stand and you can see the park from above. The entrance fee was 29 adults and 14 children but it was worth it. There is a bar inside from the park and at the exit of the park there are several options to eat. You can leave and re-enter without problem.

Awful at peak times. The metro seems persistently delayed. And when you want to get on it's crammed. Best avoid and use another station at peak times

Horrible station, the blue line metro service is terrible, even though it is historically responsible for transporting workers from Lisbon, the waiting time exceeds 10 minutes. In addition, they replaced all transport card readers with a worse version, which conflicts with other cards and makes the process of coming and going even slower. They go on strike EVERY SINGLE MONTH. Lack of shame on the face.

Glad we visited this very interactive zoo. There is an aerial tram for a terrific overview. And be sure to see the apes.

Beautiful zoo with interesting animals. Not just something for little children, but also for adults. There is a lot to discover and explore. Definitely worth a visit! The dolphin show is remarkable. Don't miss it! A cable car ride gives a breathtaking view over the zoo.

As zoo's go, it is a very nice zoo. Nice trail and some exciting animals to peep at. Just a bit disappointed I couldn't see any dinosaurs but I feel this may have been due to external circumstances that took place 66 million years ago.

Very cool place to visit with kids! Entrance to the park is free, a lot of animals, children are delighted! Usually an hour is enough to see the whole park.

Would it be possible to show here a plan with the exits from the Zoo station? And all the others, by the way... The people are grateful!!!

Station with horrible access for people with reduced mobility, pregnant women, prams and wheelchair users. There is no elevator inside the station, a station that has access to the train. Bad planning.

👍 Well, Baixa-Chaido metro station is located in the city of Lisbon. It is located very well. The Metro has four lines. It goes from Reboleira to Santa Apolonia and also from Cais do Sodre to Telheiras. We need to put mask and keep social distance because of covid-19. We can easily get here by bus,...

😠 Escalators are constantly out of order, train frequencies can exceed 12 minutes. Absurd. This is why people use public transport less and less. Furthermore, the station is located absurdly far from the urban area of Pontinha. Everything seems to be done to force people to walk a lot.
