What a beautifully built palace. I love finding gems like this where there aren't hoards of tourists. We went on a Sunday afternoon and at times were the only people in a corridor. Definitely take time to check out entire palace walk. There is amazing architecture and pieces at every corner. Parking is free Sundays and plentiful!

For some reason it normally goes somewhat underrated which is most surprising given the sheer grandeur and richness of the whole complex, palace and basilique. Just to start with it is the biggest religious building in the world (yes, much larger than Spain's Escorial!). Then it has everything and everything in the superlative: biggest tower bells in the world, with 96 bells that sometimes play in concert; and six giant organs in the basilique, sometimes playing in concert music that is specifically written for six organs, which is very unique. The library is also huge and magnificent, as well as just about everything else in the palace, which houses a good art collection, specially in what concerns furniture.

There are no guided tours and you cannot buy tickets in advance. The explainations are poor, skip a lot of details and leave visitors in the dark. The explainations are only in English and Portuguese, and they often vary with different information. Some of restorations of the objects are poor, and the people at the place look at you sideways if you're discussing what's in it or if you explain it. Props to the lady who talks to us and explained the King's toliet of her own accord. Nonetheless it's a pretty place, but I really do recommend you get a guide, private or even just a local friend who knows History. It's a lot better with context. I wasn't even offered an audio guide.

If you love visiting royal monuments, this place is a must visit in Portugal. You can visit the stunning Basilica for free and get a ticket to visit the palace itself. The palace visit includes the infirmary and the complete royal area, filled with the furniture and decoration used at the time. You will also be able to visit the royal library which includes over 36000 books.

The palace exhibition is interesting and for 8€ is definitely worth it, especially the library, the basilica is free of charge, don't miss it. There is also a gallery that doesn't require a fee and one can enter a tiny garden from the same level.

Very interesting place with a spectacular library that should not be missed! There is a convenient bus stop just across the street. The ticket from Lisbon costs 4.50 euro per person.

I absolutely love this place because of its history, beauty and magnitude. I pass it frequently but for me it's like a first time look every time. A tour is recommended so that you hear the details of the royal quarters to the convents bells to the military quarters Definitely worth wild visiting.

This is such a beautiful building with incredible grandeur. There is an amazing level of detail in everything, and signs explain the rich history in Portuguese and English. To get a complete experience I would recommend a guided tour, though there is still a great opportunity in wandering around and seeing parts without context. There are discounts for many different categories, but entry is also quite cheap.

This is a must visit in Portugal. Huge, imposing, gorgeous and super interesting. Recently (!) received a world heritage status (formerly written everywhere -.- in the small village). Without the gorgeous Cerco Garden outside it's a 60-90mns visit to see everything (including the church). The library, home of bats 🦇, is the big highlight. 6€ it's the price - bargain.

Beautiful Palace to get an impression how the Royals used to live. Some parts have been renovated but the majority isn,t.The library is impressive .Pity that you can,t enter it.The church is very beautiful.I wish the owners good luck with the renovation plans and to raise the funds.

It should be noted that the visit was shorter due to Covid19 measures, and no audio guide was available for that reason. The statues in the atrium of the church are particularly impressive; the palace itself is nice, but lacks a bit in historical and contextual explanations (probably usually covered by the audio guide). But then you arrive at the highlight of the visit: the library. In a beautiful, long room, the thousands of volumes are protected by a local colony of tiny bats (they only come out at night and sleep behind the bookcases during the day so you won't get a glimpse of them). Among the extensive collection, the library houses forbidden books, protected from the Inquisition by a papal bull from 1745. Overall, an interesting historical palace, but the library alone is worth the visit!

Palace is really huge! I just thought it would never ever end. 😊 After visit I felt heavy, but also amazed by work have been done by 40 000 people to build this palace. Most beautiful place in whole palace I found library. Very subjective opinion because I love to read and have own small library. If to photograph, 2h is not enough! 📷👍

This was my third visit to Portugal, but the very first I've visited this Palace. It's set in Mafra, less than an hour drive from the capital. You're pretty amazed when this beautiful huge edifice comes into your sight - terrific white/yellow Baroque Palace. Mafra is a very small town (village), so such a huge Palace is not expected here and looks disproportional with its surroundings. I think its size rivals the Versailles palace. The complex dates back to 18 cent built for King Joao V and consists of a convent on the ground floor, Palace rooms on the first floor, Basilica and Royal Library. For such a complex entry fee is incredibly cheap (6 Euros if I remember correctly) and includes access to everything. Signage is good with explanations of the rooms, however the interiors I found pretty underwhelming - don't expect lavish decors like in similar European palaces. Rooms are huge, but lacking in decorations and look semi empty. Also, the maintenance should be improved - many items are filthy and look neglected. The Library is at the far end of the Palace complex - requires 2 km of walking as we were informed by the staff. It houses around 36000 old, rare and important books, beautifully arranged. However, it is far from the beauty of Coimbra library. Basilica is wonderful, very rich in marble decorations. Count on around hour and a half for a visit.

Mafra Palace is an amazing attraction to visit. It is an incredibly cheap fee and it is totally worth it. The palace is massive, there are more than hundreds of rooms to visit, with different uses such as dormatories, bathrooms, kitchens etc. There is also a big beautiful church with amazing detailed statues and many windows and prayer rooms. There is also a large library full of books with detailed architecture. This palace will not disappoint. Visit if you are in the area!

Amazing palace, worth a visit for sure. You must visit if you are in the area. I would recommend - good price & lots to see inside. Maybe a little more Information on the palace itself & the history etc would be helpful but I’ll do my own reading to get up to speed.

Weekday visit and had the palace nearly to ourselves. Only 12 euros for family of four. Very large indoor site that cascades through vast rooms of religious artifacts, art, trophies, time period furniture, etc. To rear is a free park and flower garden as well. When done, plenty of shopping and food options literally straight across the street from the palace. Parking available on site by hour. Very inexpensive.

A gorgeous Portuguese palace, lots to see, the grandeur of the place is simply stunning. The library is simple stunning and contains one of the largest and most significant enlightenment collections in all of Europe. And the library room is beautiful. The are also lists of rooms you can visit depicting what life may have been like for former kings, priests and there guests. There are priceless artefacts throughout the guided route with occasional information boards.

This is a very complemented place, awesome from my point of view. I mean if your in Lisbon this is the right thing to do if u got just about four hours or so. Beautiful tower bells concert every Sunday at 4pm, great Basilica, and the museum is as the rest of the royal palaces very indepth in the history of the personal life of the ancient royalty. I do recommend the place. Do not forget to buy a sample of the local bakery, they're so well done 😋

Beautiful palace, very good value for money. We used self tours, as we were staying nearby on holiday, and were not sure how to access guided tours. As booking on site seemed to be self toured. I took a star off for this, as I would have liked a guide tour to learn more about the palace history. But the palace itself is still magnificent

Sensational Palace and National Monument. Definitely worth the visit for anyone who has a minimum of cultural incline and interest in history. It features an beautiful Convent/Church and the Nation's biggest library (38000 volumes!). Architecturally, one of the most beautiful structures from that epoch (17th/18th Century). It's in excellent condition 👌🏼

  • 3/5 Pedro F. 1 year ago on Google
Don't get me wrong, it is one of the best places to visit in Portugal. It's well preserved and very interesting to visit, but after visiting similar monuments in other countries it's just lacking a lot... Most of the rooms are mostly empty and when you have items behind the glass, no tags or explanation is available. As each room is not identified (1 identification plaque serves 4 or 5 rooms), it's very hard to use the map that is available to buy at the gift shop. Having been visiting similar monuments in London recently, the difference is huge!

This is well worth a visit!! Only €6 entry and you get to see so much including an incredible library. Very impressive

  • 4/5 Mark i. 11 months ago on Google
It's interesting here! A good exposition of the lifestyle of the past. There is very little information about the objects and events that took place here. In the library (this is a very interesting object), you are not allowed inside!((only at the entrance you can be...(((This is a huge complex...and you can see a small part... But even with these unpleasant nuances, this is necessary see! :)

We visited the Mafra National Palace as part of a private tour and it was amazing (a word I rarely use). We had the palace, essentially, to ourselves. It was the most impressive palace we saw while in Portugal and yet it has not become a tourist hotspot. We highly recommend visiting the Mafra National Palace if you are interested in Portuguese history and architecture. The palace was built as a promise to God by King John V after the birth of his first son. The king was so grateful for the birth of a male heir that he vowed to build a grand palace and monastery in honor of the Virgin Mary. The palace was designed by the German architect Johann Friedrich Ludwig and construction took over 30 years to complete. Here are some of the highlights of our visit: The grand staircase: The staircase in the palace is one of the most impressive features. It is made of marble and is decorated with statues and gold leaf. The basilica: The basilica is a large church with two towers and six(!) organs. The organs are some of the largest in the world and are played every Sunday. The library: The library is one of the largest in Portugal and contains over 36,000 volumes. The library is open to the public and is a great place to learn about Portuguese history and culture. We preferred it to the Coimbra library. Even "unfinished" it was a breathtaking sight. The palace's collection of art and artifacts: The Mafra National Palace is home to a collection of art and artifacts that is truly impressive. We were particularly impressed by the palace's collection of Baroque paintings, and the collection of antique furniture. Overall, we had a wonderful experience visiting the Mafra National Palace. It is a truly impressive building, and its history and architecture are fascinating. We highly recommend visiting the palace as part of a private tour, as this will allow you to get the most out of your visit.

The National Palace of Mafra was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. The Royal Palace occupies the noble floor of the Mafra building and the 2 turrets. The north turret was occupied by the king and the south turret by the queen, and both turrets are linked by a 232-metre gallery – making it Europe’s largest palatial corridor. This building, of about 40,000 m2, housed a Franciscan convent (300 fryers) – and features Campo Santo, the Infirmary, the Elliptical Hall (capitular), the Literary Acts Hall, the Stairway and the Dining Hall.

Beautiful palace, it is so gorgeous and beautiful! It is quite enormous. Shame I couldn’t go into the courtyard but there’s loads inside. I was surprised by the library! Used the Lisboa pass for easy entry! Lisboa pass did not cover the bus/coach costs so be aware of that. Was €4.50 each/one way.

It's the top attraction in the town, and definitely worth a visit. The outside is more impressive than the inside though, which has some rooms that are quite empty - with a reason: the Portuguese king, D. João VI, took most of the furniture with him when he escaped to Brazil, in 1807.

Very disappointing. They closed completely for lunch leaving one entrance open and no notice or signs so it was all very confusing. They blamed it on covid and being understaffed but surely it wasn't necessary for all staff to go for lunch at the same time and if it was then they should have made people aware. Very disorganised!! The entry price was reduced as only one floor was open but even that was minimalist and had lots of things missing. Such a shame that such a once grand and beautiful building has been left to fall into disrepair. The only saving grace was the Basilica which was free and still very impressive!

Great barroque building. Massive actually. Have seen it a few times and even add the pleasure to have been on a few places that are not open to the general public, it's impressive. But also you can tell that it's too much to be fully "used" the budget is limited in Portugal. It's in constant need of repair somewhere. Slowly it's improving I guess. Hope to see develop new and exciting was of using such a building in the future.
