There are twin ornamental fountains on the two ends of Rossio Square, flanking the Dom Pedro IV Column monument. This one is at the southern end. It is shaped like a chalice with standing cherubs in the mid level above seated allegorical figures. Water spills into a circular basin from which four additional mermaid like statue figures rise. It is an attractive fountain monument, as is the sister fountain on the north end of the square. You can take nice pictures of both fountains up close. I like the position on the south side of this fountain where you can see both fountains, the Dom Pedro IV Column as well as the Donia Maria II National Theatre in the background.

This beautiful fountain is located directly opposite Convento do Carmo, at the southern end of Praça Dom Pedro IV, the main central square and beating heart of Lisbon, which is simply known as Rossio. It's one of two identical baroque fountains in Rossio that were imported from France, and installed in 1870. It's adorned with bronze sculptures and mythical figures including four mermaid statues.

Praça do Rossio square, where the fountain is located, is better known as Dom Pedro IV Square among the locals. In the middle of this square, which has been one of the main squares of Lisbon since the Middle Ages, you will see a tall statue of Dom Pedro IV. In 1889, two monumental fountains were built to the north and south of the statue. This fountain is the southern fountain. It is more striking because of its twin, Teatro Nacional Dona Maria II, located opposite its northern fountain. You can examine the architecture of the theater building, accompanied by the beautiful sound of the waters flowing from the fountain.

(Translated by Google) From Rossio station you go out to one of the most important squares in Lisbon Rossio whose official name is Praca don Pedro IV Rossio square used to be a place of executions of bullfighting courts, now it is a popular meeting point for Lisboners and tourists in the 15th century, the Estatus Palace was built here, originally a residence hosting Foreign dignitaries in the sixteenth century The Inquisition chose this building as its headquarters, which is why Rossio Square was used for public executions. In the nineteenth century, the square gained a new surface, traditional here, forming a wave motif. One of the two twin fountains found on the south side of the Rossio Square. Adorned with various statues of mermaids and cherubs, this is most likely the prettiest of all the fountains in Lisbon.

(Translated by Google) In the large and central praca Rossio, these two twin fountains, placed almost at the two ends of the long side, create a scenographic picture very useful for the beauty of the place; they have been cast in cast iron and the style is baroque, with a beautiful play of waters that descend from above, but also rise from the peripheral figures.
