Outstanding hidden gem which should be a must-visit for everyone! This amazing aquarium and museum in one really captures the imagination and gives one a sense of wonder for natural history. Don't skip the Amazing interactive ocean wall and also be sure to spend some time feeding the koi fish, great fun! The Coffee Shop and rest rooms are also really good.

After several years of hearing about the Vasco da Gama Aquarium, this year I finally had the opportunity to visit. As far as the interior there are two main components: the aquarium, and the museum. With regards to the aquarium, as a recreational fisherman, I really enjoyed seeing species that I meet regularly, some more often than others. I thought the route through the various maritime areas of Portugal was very well thought out. As for the museum, given that this aquarium is part of one of the most noble and historic Portuguese institutions (the Portuguese Navy), with regards to the sea it is hard to know more than them. It is full of stories, and a lot of culture. Will also suggest visiting the top floor, where one can find several models of various species, shells, etc. The small garden outside is nice, and has some benches where you can relax a bit. All in all it was a time well spent.

This old aquarium (opened more than 120 years ago) still has a lot of charm and it is extremely educational. It is a great place to take your kids and show them a lot of species that line in the rivers and seas. Currently is going through a major renovation with some empty tanks and some closed areas. Still, it is a great place to visit. Parking is available and it is free on Sundays.

Such a nice place. Great building with very polite and friendly staff. Most of them speaks English and are ready to help. The exhibits are very lovely even if the all concept and layout is a little outdated. All the explanation and descriptions are in English which is a huge plus. There's a museum attached and a lovely snack bar. Many people go to the main aquarium but you really shouldn't lose to see this one.

As an huge fish fan and aquarist I noticed that the tanks where the fishes are kept in are way too small and undecorated nevertheless animals are healthy and well treated staff is also very kind and helpful I recommend visiting this place and leaving a little tip

(Translated by Google) Located in Lisbon, it is one of the oldest aquariums in the world. His design project was integrated into the program of Celebrations of the IV centenary of Vasco da Gama's departure for the discovery of the sea route to India. It was sponsored by King D. Carlos I, who was very interested in all activities related to Oceanography and deep knowledgeable about marine species, which he collected. It was inaugurated on May 20, 1898 and also started to have the king's personal collections in his custody. From 1901, the Aquarium was under the supervision of the Ministry of Navy. The Aquarium covers two distinct areas, one where the heritage donated by King D. Carlos is exposed and the other where they are live species of fish and turtles, as well as a large number of number of embalmed water birds. It is a space that is visited with great pleasure and has a pedagogical presentation to mark.

Aquarium and museum a bit out of center, so not a lot of tourists but lit of local families. The visit was very nice except for the screams of babies and kids. They have a broad collection.

Great aquarium and museum. Built in the late 19th century but still very current. Koy lake outside with the possibility of buying food to feed the fish. Great for kids.

Interesting story about the first exploring expeditions of the deep sea and nice collection of species. It's the oldest aquarium in town, but windows could have been cleaned to a better view of the sea animals.

Enjoyable but BEWARE of paid parking: many spaces on the right side of the parking lot are illegal, reserved for buses even though the spaces are obviously for cars. They will block your tires and fine you 133 euros!

When visiting the aquarium, you should also pop into the cafe at the end of your visit for a snack. The cafe decor is very appropriate and the view is lovely. The aquarium offered several pools and windows to see the different sea creatures and also had lovely architecture.

Vasco da Gama Aquarío near Belém is great with kids, easy and only takes a few hours. Although it is smaller than the Oceanario, Lisbon's other aquarium, I think it is better than other aquariums I have seen in Europe.

Perfect place to visit in Lisbon. It is not so popular then Oceanario, so there is no crowd at all, you will have enough space to explore this aquarium. What was very interesting for me is that you could see planktons here with your own eyes. You will find here a lot of sweetwater and saltwater aquarium, some exhibition related to sealife on 2 floor.

  • 5/5 Salima K. 5 years ago on Google
Kids can have a close up look at different types of fish and can also feed some. It has been done up since I was a kid... it is old but has a warm environment.

The best part is the fish outside and the fact that you can feed them 😁 👍🏼 The rest is a little boring... depends what you’re into, we wouldn’t be big into the reading/fact finding so we probably should have gone to the Ocenario for the ‘wow factor’ instead. Cheap entry fee so can’t complain!

It's a pity that after all these years they still haven't replaced the sea lions and the turtles, but apart from that it's good. I liked the fact that there's a museum incorporated with the aquarium itself, plus it's calm and not crowded, like the Lisbon Oceanarium.

Loved this vintage and historic space! Great price, interesting sea life to see, and virtually unknown, which means it doesn't attract crowds. For littles, they have step stools with handles that parents can carry around for the kids to get up on to see into the aquariums and exhibits. There are also fish ponds outside and for 0,50 cents you can buy fish food and feed them ;-)

  • 5/5 Heber B. 4 years ago on Google
This aquarium is a surprise. It seems a very small place, but there is a great collection. It starts with the last king of Portugal, D. Carlos. He was a curious man that went to the see hunting the wild life of the Atlantic ocean. There's a lot of live dishes too and another fascinating creatures. I loved it.

  • 5/5 Ella A. 4 years ago on Google
For the price, it’s excellent!!! The fish and the animals (the reptile room is a bit hidden so look for it) are so cool and diverse, and the museum is very interesting! Well worth a trip!

  • 5/5 Bryan C. 1 year ago on Google
Sincerely I would recommend it. 5 euros the ticket. If you arrive by car it's plenty of free parking lots in the streets beside the place.

  • 3/5 Steffen W. 1 year ago on Google
Old aquariums, scratched glasses, algae wherever you look. Poor underwater landscape design from the last century. This exhibition would need a lot of love, effort and money. Nevertheless, for an aquarium hobbyist like me, it's interesting anyway. As long as there are fish swimming I'm happy to watch. If you aren't interested in that hobby and you have children, I would also recommend to make a visit. Children are always fascinated by these kind of zoo. If you are traveling by railway, hopp off at Algés (hahaha) station and walk for 15 minutes westbound beside the railway tracks. When you enter the area of the aquario, you see outside a pond, where you can feed a lot of Koi fish. It's really relaxing to sit there under the shady trees and let the time go by.

  • 4/5 Alfie E. 1 year ago on Google
Fear not, they do have toilets, but I can't add that option on here for some reason. There about half way through the place. Honestly was not prepared for half the animals to be 100 years old, dead and pickled in jars, but it was an interesting historical museum. The selection of living fish was less than a bigger aquarium but still an interesting and unique visit. Really cheap to get in as well

  • 3/5 Robert W. 1 year ago on Google
It is a great little aquarium. Very interesting from a historical point of view. I found it most informative. The aquarium is small and covers a lot of the past and a little of the present. We'll worth the enterance price.

  • 5/5 Andrea V. 10 months ago on Google
Wonderful natural museum of aquatics with an array of aquariums on the ground floor. Absolutely wonderful place to take kids to, especially those who are fascinated by animals. Seeing specimens preserved up close (the angler fish and giant squid were particularly fascinating) was wonderful, and there are a lot of interesting fish and other aquatic life in the tanks. It's a bit off the beaten path, but well worth a visit. Plus crowd free after a day battling the hordes at the Monastery and Belem tower.

  • 5/5 ام . 9 months ago on Google
We went all 4, it's not our first and I'll pretty sure won't be the past, the environment is awesome and we have some fishes to see, it's not the Ocenarium but it's a good spot to take the kids and not spending to much on tickets.

I was visiting Lisbon with my family. My kids were tired of walking, we have been doing so for more than 10 days, so we thought an aquarium would be a good option. We all enjoyed the visit to this aquarium. We saw marine creatures we are not used to seeing. Shrimps, star fishes, a gigantic squid, eels, an angler fish, and I could keep on going. This aquarium was a very nice surprise for all the family and it's also good for the price.

We got there at the opening hour (10am) and wew were there alone! it was super cool to see all marine creatures in silence and in a pace we liked. It is a small aquarium (but superbly ready to entertain kids) so if it is rainy or you want to take a chill break it is a prefect place to go!

👍 First think this place requires prior reservation before entering. So if you didn’t make a reservation you can’t do it the day you came. Second they do not provide helmets and gloves. Helmets are not as important but gloves are essential as there are a lot of places were you will need to hold tight...

😠 I visited here during the exposition Musex, a traveling(?) museum exhibit about female sexual pleasure and health. This is a very important topic as many women and almost all men have no idea what goes on with the female body. So, we went. I was infuriated at their handling of this topic. There was...
