You can approach the castle by foot, cable car, car or by little train :) We went by walk, it's not difficult to go to the top, it's nice and green and you can reach it in 10-15 minutes. Before enter the castle you can buy the ticket to the tower. Inside the castle you can drink a soft drink which was very nice on a warm day. The castle is clean and nicely renovated. We also saw 3 weddings on that day. The view from the tower was beautiful. The museum was interesting. We had a lot of fun and we definitely recommend it to anyone. Enjoy it!

The Castle of Ljubljana sits on the central hill that is prominent in the old part of the city. It's important to know that the top of the hill, where the castle is, can be reached on foot, bicycle, and car from different pathways. The least energy consuming pathway is the Gondola lift, located to the north-east of the hill. The use of this lift is only possible by buying a full castle tour ticket. The Castle ticket is normally 10€ if you buy it up, and 13 if you want to catch the lift. An additional fee can be paid for an audio recorded guide. The devices communicate wirelessly with the exhibits so that you can just walk around and the recordings will change accordingly. The Castle is very well maintained but the whole experience remains on the commercials side of things. Not a good bargain for the cost, but nonetheless an iconic tourist destination. Perhaps a lot more interesting and enjoyable are the small streets around the hill of the Castle, with characteristic buildings and the central water canal. At the Castle itself the visit is divided into different exhibition sites, with the high tower being somewhat the highest attraction. The exhibition sites focus on historical events in the history of Slovenia, including the more recent independence from Yugoslavia. A short but steep walk down the hill will take you back to the old town.

I visited the castle twice on my trip to Ljubljana. Firstly, as this is the end of the walking city tour as part of the Ljubljana Tourist Card, and secondly through entry to the Viewing Tower. Both times, riding the funicular to the castle, as this is a much easier route than the walk up the steep hill. The castle itself is beautiful, with amazing views of the city and beyond. There are a number of exhibitions/museums on show which are all good. I'd say the highlight is the viewing tower. The top of the tower has the best views of the city and the Alps beyond. Unfortunately it isn't open during the sunset when I visited, however, there is a great spot just outside the castle, next to the viewing tower. There's also a bar out there, but get there earlier as the tables seemed to fill up quickly.

Being located in the middle of the city, the castle is a very popular tourist attraction. It is therefore recommended to visit the castle as early as possible. Inside the castle multiple restaurants and several nice exhibitions can be found. Be aware that visiting the castle is free, but that all indoor exhibitions require a ticket. The castle and the surrounding paths give nice views over the city and it's worth to watch the sunset from the top of the hill! (Buying a Ljubljana Tourist Card gives free access to the castle, funicular, a lot of museums and the zoo in Ljubljana)

This is a very nice castle with a nice observing tower, however, what makes it so special is the puppetry museum that you get access to when you buy entrance tickets. Very clean and well maintained. Great care for details and multiple benches to sit down, relax and enjoy the beautiful views of Ljubljana. A highly recommended visit and very friendly staff!

Ljubljana Castle, perched atop Castle Hill, dominates the skyline of Slovenia's capital city, Ljubljana. With a history dating back to the 11th century, the castle has undergone various renovations and reconstructions, blending Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance architectural elements. Visitors can ascend to the castle via a funicular or a scenic walk and explore its well-preserved structures, including the Outlook Tower, Chapel of St. George, and the Pentagonal Tower. The castle also serves as a cultural venue, hosting events, exhibitions, and providing panoramic views of the picturesque city below.

3,5 Stars Really cool place. Easy to reach, lots to do and to see. With one ticket you see it all. The photography gallery was closed for no reason. The history museum was mordenised and very digital but half of the screens did not work. There was no information in front of entries when the gastronomy opens. But the place is beautiful and clean.

Very beautiful castle in the center of Ljubljana. You can reach the castle by car. Parking is also possible in front of the castle for free. You can take very nice photos of sunset views even from the courtyard. Tower view is possible only after paying the entrance fee. I couldn't find clear instructions which are paid view points and which are not. Spending evening time watching serenity and old town views. I won't recommend buying tickets because it's not worth it.

Definitively the symbol of the Slovenian capital, which can be admired from literally every point of the center as it dominates Ljubljana. From the castle there are various vantage points from which you can see the city center quite well and, when possible, you can also see the Austrian mountains. To reach the castle you can use the funicular or you can also reach it on foot. The climb is not impossible so I don't recommend using the funicular in order to save some money. I think the Castle itself is only beautiful as a panoramic point, as I don't think the interior is worthy of a visit

The castle itself is beautiful, it is free to enter. 🏰 However, I recommend to buy the ticket then you can enter everywhere, you can visit thw museums, the prison, and also, you can go to the top of the tower to enjoy the beautiful view of Ljubljana. You can see 30% of the land of Slovenia from the tower ☝️😊

A castle with a few exhibits to visit and a nice view from the tower but we hoped to see more period objects, rooms and furniture. The exhibits are really a bit disjointed and you don't really feel the history here. We enjoyed the fast ride up the funicular but the walk down was really more relaxing and better to take in the area and see the city.

Best view of Ljubljana. Some of it has been restored and additions made to the old parts. Well worth a visit even if you’re here for a day or so. The walk up to the castle can be done a few different ways. The steps from the river is the quickest. You can also take the longer sloping road if you have time, it takes you past some old towers and through a nice park.

Wonderful view of Ljubljana in an extraordinarily well renovated and maintained fortress, with several nice restaurants and bars on site. Easy access with funicular, but you should at least enjoy the footpath on your way downhill. Next time have to visit definitely the castle museum, too, closing a little bit too early.

Top place that is well organized and nicely preserved. I like how it is still in use today to show some of the nicest art galleries. There are also top restaurants and cafes. Nice activities for the family (maze).

Ljubljana Castle is a charming and splendid attraction that combines the old and the new in a remarkable way. From its elevated position, you can admire the stunning views of the city and the surrounding landscape. The castle has a long and fascinating history that spans from the ancient times to the present day. It was first settled by the carriers of urn burial culture in the late Bronze Age and Iron Age, and later became the seat of the lords of Carniola, a historical region that covered most of present-day Slovenia. It was also an arsenal, a hospital, a prison, and a poorhouse at different times in its history. It has been restored with care and creativity, preserving its medieval heritage while adding modern features and facilities. You can easily reach the castle by taking a funicular ride that is both fun and convenient. Ljubljana Castle is a must-see destination for anyone who wants to experience the rich history and culture of Slovenia’s capital city. Don’t miss this opportunity to visit one of the most beautiful and fascinating castles in Europe.

A beautiful castle in the center of Ljubljana. You can get to the castle either better or by cable car. Parking is also possible in front of the castle. The castle is modernly equipped, it is possible to take a nice photo with views, even in the courtyard. Entry to the highest tower is possible only after paying the entrance fee. There is also an information center and a gift shop. Suitable for families with children but also for seniors.

A castle that overlooks the town you're visiting is great. A castle like this one is even better. Plenty to see, plenty to eat and never overcrowded. Be sure to get you tour ticket and take your time exploring the prisons, the displays and ultimately the view from the tower (humbling if you're afraid of heights) of Ljubljana and beyond.

Must visit place if you’re traveling to or through Slovenia country. You can access by renovated funicular or by walking. All the castle is fully renovated with amazing staircase leading to tower. From all places you see city center and beautiful Alps.

The city's panoramic view is wonderful from the castle. The road is enjoyable, and in the castle is a wonderful cafe. We drank black tea. It was nice. The staff is so nice and kind. The ambience of the place is relaxing and peaceful.

Incredible castle to visit. Thought we’d be here 30 minutes but spent a couple of hours looking around at everything. The walk up isn’t too challenging and takes only 15-20 minutes from the river in the middle of the city. There are trails and walkways all around and up on the top to enjoy for free. I recommend paying to visit the castle (€16) as there is loads to see and the views are incredible! The way they’ve provided access and restored the castle is remarkable, allowing you to see so much of it. There’s a cafe, 2 restaurants, jazz bar and venue up there, and a small Christmas market in the courtyard when we visited in December. Well worth it.

Main landmark of the Ljubljana. You can visit a part from Free and another one only if you buy a ticket. A must to do in town. We bought a ticket and our favorite place was the city story. It also has a cool puppets museum for kids. Can be reach walking or have a parking in front.

A beautiful castle overlooking Ljubljana. One can walk there or go by car, but the most fun is the elevator located near the centre of the city. It takes you right in the bottom of the castle and you can explore form there. Most of the things you can see there are free, but the highest tower and the inner castle require a payed ticket. There are some great views of the city and there is a large park with several stops for a nice walk. A very fun and interesting place to visit when spending some time in Ljubljana.

During my recent visit to Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, I had the pleasure of exploring the historic Ljubljana Castle. Perched atop a hill in the city's center, the castle offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, coupled with stunning views of the city below. 1. The Ascent The journey began with a funicular ride to the top, which was both convenient and offered a unique vantage point of the city. For those who prefer a more active approach, the well-marked hiking trails provide a lovely alternative. 2. The Grounds Upon arrival, the castle's grounds were immaculately kept, with lush greenery and well-preserved structures. The courtyard was a hub of activity, with visitors milling about and taking in the atmosphere. 3. The History The castle's museum provided an insightful look into the region's history, with exhibits that were both informative and engaging. The Timeline of the Castle exhibit was particularly interesting, detailing the castle's evolution from a medieval fortress to a symbol of cultural pride. 4. The Tower Climbing the Watchtower was a highlight, as it offered a 360-degree panoramic view of Ljubljana. The climb was a bit of a workout, but the reward at the top was well worth the effort. 5. The Puppet Museum An unexpected delight was the Puppet Museum. It showcased a whimsical collection that was a hit with both children and adults alike, adding a touch of playfulness to the historical site. 6. The Café The castle's café was a great spot to relax and enjoy a coffee or a light meal. The outdoor seating area provided a serene setting to take in the views and reflect on the visit. Ljubljana Castle is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Slovenia's charming capital. It offers a rich blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, all wrapped up in an easily accessible and thoroughly enjoyable experience. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply looking for a picturesque spot to unwind, Ljubljana Castle delivers on all fronts.

Fantastic castle. Plenty of history of the castle and Ljubljana itself, from the Romans, Second World War, and current times. The exhibits are full of information and the view from atop the tower is spectacular. I opted to do a guided tour (in English). The guide was amazing, full of information, and the characters that you meet as you move around the castle and go through time, were great adds to the experience and adds that little touch like adding the human experience of the times.

Although it was raining on and off throughout our visit to the castle, it was still worth taking the funicular to the hilltop. There were places to eat and some shops there as well, though we had already made plans to eat elsewhere. It is a great place to get views of the beautiful city below and get some perspective.

A beautiful castle with an interesting and easy to follow audio guide. The art installations were beautiful. It does feel like it’s lost a little of its character as some of the renovations are very modern. The view from the top is great!

The castle's surroundings are beautiful and the sight from the top of the hill is breathtaking! We didn't get into the castle itself, just walked around the park. Cool place. There's 2 ways to get up there by foot; through a long and tiring staircase or through the much less difficult park/forrst5 area from the other side.

Great visit at the Ljubljana Castle. I suggest you walk your way up, very relaxing in the middle of the park. I also suggest you to buy the ticket to explore the castle and to go on top of the tower to admire a wonderful city view.

  • 5/5 Alena 4 months ago on Google
The best part was the observation deck, offering an amazing view of Ljubljana and Mount Triglav. However, the museum felt quite empty with a lot of open space, few signs, and many closed or unfinished rooms. Admission for adults costs 12 euros, and even the museum's toilet is paid at 0.50 euros.

Great place to spend hours finding out about the castle and cities history and also enjoy the views from across the city. It's a short walk or funicular to get to and once your there it has a mix of old and new that has been done very well We went during Christmas time and there was a small market where you could enjoy some hot wine or other snacks but we also spent time in the coffee shop which had a good selection of cakes and coffee available. The views from the top of the tower are amazing. All in all a great place to visit and make sure you give yourself a few hours as there's much more to explore then you will even realise.

Beautiful castle on top of the hill. Its a hard but nice hike when you are going up, but you can take the funicular as well! Audioguided experience with a lot of information. Nice view of the city, especially from the Watch Tower

There are many trails that lead up to the castle, we hiked up one of them, not difficult, can be done on slippers/sandals. Entry to the castle courtyard and surrounds was free. We visited on a Saturday, and at around 11.45am a couple of people played the trumpets at the top of the castle

Good experience. Don't expect to see an ancient castle. They integrated the building nicely into a modern fit for their daily activities. The ticket includes the puppet museum (creepy & lovely at the same time), a view tower (nice view of the city), a virtual castle tour (just a small cinema with 15m run time) and the history museum (5-10m). I guess the castle yard is actually free of charge since restaurants and a Jazz club are accessible from there.

  • 5/5 alvin l. 8 months ago on Google
Well worth the fairly steep hike. The area above the ticket office is free of charge. Only need to pay if you wish to go up to the top of castle for scenic viewing, etc. Or else the open area beneath the castle is well enough. Could as well save up the ticket cost and spend it on dining there instead, which also possess the scenic view.

  • 5/5 Csongor V. 8 months ago on Google
Beautiful castle, very good past time. I recommend getting the audio guide it helps a lot to enjoy the exhibits. I loves the modern additions, concrete and steel walkways, theatre. There was a queue at the funicular but it goes relatively fast.

Worth visiting. Impressive castle om top of the hill, so great views. Also a very nice park surrounding it. You can get there by car, on foot or take the elevator from the city center.

Impressive castle built on the wall of a mountain. Very well preserve with a nice story telling. Would have loved to ascend the castle through the secret passage.

  • 4/5 Maxime M. 2 years ago on Google
The view on Ljubjlana is amazing from the tower of the castle but you have to pay 10€ to get a ticket that includes other things. The different « attraction » in the castle were not well indicated. The modern part is well integrated to the castle in my opinion.

  • 5/5 Omer R. 2 years ago on Google
I love how they integrated the new buildings with the old stones and walls of the actual castle. I recommend buying the ticket so you can see some of the galleries and the view from the tower! On a sunny day you can see a third of Slovenia (not just the city!) I walked up from "student" street and went down using the cart. A bit steep of a climb though.

  • 5/5 Mateja K. 2 years ago on Google
Very nice castle. It offers a nice view on Ljubljana. There is a restaurant and coffee bar at the castle. You can climb up the castle Tower, visit the castle Chapel and former castle prison and temporary exhibitions. Or you can have a relaxing walk in the woods surrounding the castle.

  • 3/5 André M. 2 years ago on Google
It's a mandatory stop when in Ljubljana, and the views from it (and of it, from almost everywhere in the city, but mostly from the river bank) are lovely. The castle itself is a little disappointing, there's not much to see and I really didn't understand what the ticket was supposed to offer you, apart from the funicular ride, since there was no special exhibition to see nor tour to take, and the whole thing is seen pretty quickly...

  • 5/5 Ruben D. 2 years ago on Google
Here you have the best view over the city! Visit the beautiful park as well.

  • 4/5 Oliver P. 2 years ago on Google
It's a nice little hike up some stairs to the castle from which you get a great view of Ljubljana. Most of the castle can be visited for free but some areas require you to buy a ticket to get into.
