My daughter's friend, who is French, brought this monument to my attention. I've been to this roundabout many times, in the central part of Ljubljana, next to Križanka, but I've never noticed it. Obviously, this monument is full of contradictions, because Napoleon was not a very gentle conqueror. Otherwise, this is a monument to French Illyria.

Slovenians are not the only European nation to build monuments to their invaders. This "invader", Napoleon Bonaparte, defeated Austria and in spirit of French revolution, allowed natives to use their own language and culture (which Austrians didn't). This way Napoleon gained a lot of admirers among the nations he invaded, or let's say, the nations he LIBERATED from German or Austrian hands. Slovenians owe him freedom of culture in their native language. And that's huge.

(Translated by Google) Amazing surprise that this Bonapartist monument paying tribute to the one who made Slovenia a French province. The charming Slovenian guide explains to us that the French don't like it Napoleon I...perhaps because they no longer have any national pride or identity. Before, the Usurper was hated by all of Europe and revered by the French, but he was admired by all. May God help the people of France to regain their memory, the zest for life and the desire for the future. Domine salvam fac Galliam!

Consigliato

A very beautiful monument, the work of the greatest Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik. Interestingly, according to known information, this is the only monument to Napoleon outside the territory of France.
