I've done quite a bit of travel in Singapore, Malaysia including Penang. Seeing this as a well reviewed Malaysian restaurant it was worth a visit to see what the fuss in about. It is a simple restaurant with such friendly service that you feel at home immediately. We shared a combination laksa, ipoh chicken noodle soup and char kway teow. The Ipoh Chicken noodle was the stand out dish. The chicken was like Hainan Chicken, it was super tender with a somewhat gelatinous skin. There was a slight pepperiness to it which really made this meal a suprise as the winner of the 3. The char kway teow had wok hai smokiness to it. I was disappointed not to find any chinese sausage or cockles which I would expect to find in this dish, but the flavour was on point. The Laksa was flavourful, and both of these noodle soup dishes did not disappoint. I would have liked to give 4.6 to match the current rating, however I couldn't bring myself to give less than a 5 star to maintain that rating as I think they deserve to keep it. The service is outstanding, as I said it was welcoming beyond any restaurant. I think it was even the chef bringing out the meals which kept them fresh. Even the pot of Chinese tea was tasty. The food isn't perfect hawker style but it is some of the best I have tasted on my travels in Australia and is worth a visit.

23 Dec 2023 Lovely cosy place. Super fast prep and service. Very customer friendly and excellent taste. Ordered kung po beef yummy, special fried rice, chicken Laksa and rice noodles. Laksa way better than expensive gourmet restaurants in Westfield Chermside. Generous serves and leftovers taken away too. Will be back

Been hearing good things about Mama Malaya since their latest change of ownership maybe a year or so ago, and planned a dinner visit with some friends. Ordering 6 dishes for 6 people was a case of eyes bigger than stomach, and we were all pretty stuffed plus took back 2 containers of leftovers. I think we could have safely ordered 4 dishes and that would have been just right. Still, with 6 dishes, rice, and a drink each (coconut juice / teh tarik, all $5 each), the bill was about $23 a head which IMO makes this a super good value feed. We mostly chose from the specials board, and I would totally recommend all of those picks. Special mention to the tofu vegetables, flounder, and Hainan chicken, but seriously all these dishes were 👌Unfortunately my photos of a couple of these dishes were a fail so you'll just have to order them yourself to see their true glory. The only item from the regular menu was the CKT which I don’t quite recommend. It didn’t meet my expectations, being on the dry side (perhaps they used dried noodles rather than fresh?) and featuring thinner noodles (more like what you’d see in pad Thai for example) than the thicker (1cm+ width) ones I’m more used to. I did learn however that the apparently the thinner noodles are more common in northern Malaysian versions of CKT, so this may also explain it. Our order: * Marmite pork ribs 妈蜜排骨, $15.90 * Home made tofu vegetable 茉香自制豆付, $15.90 * Salt & pepper flounder 椒盐左口鱼, $20.90 * Hainan chicken (main) 海南鸡, $14.90 * Braised pork belly w/ preserved vegetable 梅菜扣肉, $18.90 * Char keow teow 炒粿条/炒贵刁, $12.90 Some things to note: * The restaurant is pretty small, so bookings are recommended and I wouldn’t really suggest too large a group. * They close on Tuesdays and can run out of some items by Sunday/Monday, so if you know you want something on those days you can call ahead to reserve a portion. We went on a Monday and quite a few items we tried to order weren’t available. * Card surcharge of about 1.2% applies.

Delicious Malaysian homey food. Great portion and authentic flavour. They are busy so come early if you're with group of people. The only downside is only few parking spots available you may have to park on the street nearby. Nevertheless if you're looking for value for money, and yummy food like your mother or grandmother's cooking, this hit the spot!

Absolutely stunning food! Every single dish is perfectly cooked with excellent service! Home-made Tofu is the best tofu dish in Brisbane I would say. Hainan Chicken is tender and juicy, served with seasoned rice. Fried rice and noodles has wok hay! The staff was so adorable, they'll introduce the food to you if you find it difficult to start with. Nice and clean restaurant, easy parking. Heart-warming service, the staff knows their customer well. You will love this place :)

OMG, this is an amazingly authentic Malaysian restaurant specialising in Ipoh dishes as well as all the other favourites. Please try it guys. Samantha the owner delivers service with a smile, and is really helpful if you have not experienced this cuisine before. It's only a small restaurant but they will be expanding soon. Try the Wonton Laksa, Hainan chicken rice, Char Kway Teow and the spicy Mee Goreng. The Yong Tau Foo and Belacan Beans rock!!! Eating in this simple place took me back to my childhood. I'm glad my kids experienced this food.

We stopped in for lunch because we happened to be driving past. This place is small but it was full of apparently happy diners. We got the last 2 seats and felt at home with the pleasant welcome we got. We ordered the whole Salt & Pepper Flounder of the specials board. We also ordered a noodle dish and a Malay chicken curry. Amazing food! We will definitely be back.

I rediscovered this place recently and have now been 3 times in the last month 😅 There are a wide variety of Malaysian and Singaporean hawker-style dishes, and the food is consistently excellent. Particular highlights so far have been the Roti Canai, Nasi Lemak, Char Kway Teow and, of course, Hainanese Chicken Rice. Friendly service and very generous portions for the price will keep me coming back. Thanks!

Under new management; good authentic Malaysian food, priced really well; and has a healthy menu with good service. The only few things are its limited seatings, old artless interior; and extended wait times on certain food items (fried flounder) but given its Underwood location and price point - it’s definitely a worthy visit! Tip: you can order first so you get it quick!

We loved Mama Malaya. The family had a craving for roti prata with chicken curry. It was fabulous. Light buttery prata with a crispy outside and a yummy chicken curry, will definitely be back! Thank you

Nice Malaysian food. Recommended to try. I like the Braised Pork Belly with Preserved Vege. The lady (owner?) was very talkative and friendly. Reminds me of the local Asian aunties back home in Asia that were always nice to me.

Big portions, delicious food! The only issue I had was the heat - it was very hot in the restaurant that I couldn't stop sweating 😥

Chicken laksa with traditional Malaysia favour. And the 海南雞飯is good too. The rice is cooked with chicken fat oil. Yummy 😋😋😋

Decent place for Malaysian food with huge portions. Come here hungry if you want to finish your meal. I ordered the Combination Ho Fun with egg sauce which was very tasty. Would come back here to get my fix of Malaysian food.

Off the charts value for money. The portions are big and most importantly they are very generous with the toppings and proteins. Authentic taste, comfortable seatings and very reasonable prices. Hard to beat.

“Fantastic, authentic, no frills Malaysian”, as said by a Malaysian friend of mine. Would eat here everyday of the week! Always check out the chalkboard menu items. The “Yong Tou foo Laksa” has eggplant and tofu stuffed with mince pork! Fun variation. Huge portion, serves two of me!

😠 Yesterday I had lunch at Cafe. I ordered a steak. When the steak comes, I ate the sides first and then the steak. The Steak spoiled. It’s really stinks. I spoke to the staff and he replied that I had eaten most of the dishes. He won't do anything, I'm very unhappy, the service was terrible, the meal...
