An unusual and potentially beautiful pub interior but not very clean, rather dilapidated and rude staff. A woman behind the bar was deliberately and unnecessarily rude, barking at us during a food order because the menu wasn't clear and we didn't know what was available. It's a shame when staff show such disdain for their customers. The food however was standard but nicely prepared.

Fabulous unique pub from the outside to the inside. Tiny place, so book a table early. The decor is so charming like you are going back 2 centuries .I highly recommend to visit but keep expectations low. You are going there for the atmosphere not the food unfortunately.

This pub looks very small from the outside but there is plenty of room inside. I had a Rhubarb beer from their many beers on tap. I enjoyed the atmosphere the most, very genuine and very British. I would like to come back one day for food.

Wedge shaped pub, with a rich history, the interior used to be immaculate, sadly the copper on the figures is in need of some TLC. Nicholsons pub, with a good selection on the bar. If you have never been before, it's a gem architecturally.

Busy and good atmosphere - excellent service as despite being fully booked the waitress squeezed us in if we could be finished by 1830. I have forgotten her name but she was super efficient - very outgoing and friendly. The fish and chips we had were above my expectations and were excellent. All round great experience made by the waitress who we made sure was well looked when we paid. The building has plenty of history and lots of ornate marble, so is worth a visit just for that. A London pub at its best.

In busy London, this pub is like an oasis. Spirit of old times. I really appreciate the beer selection. And like a true Czech, I know good beer. And here the beer is really very good. I love lager, but the local Pale and Ale is top notch. You must go here😉

Visited to see its famous beautiful architecture (&drink). It was as expected and very satisfied. But the most surprising experience was that they served incredibly delicious foods! We ordered beef pie and chicken burger. Both of them were amazing! Ordinal common pub menu, but the quality and taste were totally different from Fu####s. Absolutely recommended.

Top marks again. Food was fantastic, the steak & ale pie was delicious. The festive pie was according to my father the best pie he has had. Mashed potato was delicious. Fish & chips were brilliant too. Staff were all extremely helpful & pleasant. Throughly recommend.

We enjoyed our first meal in London in this @nicholsonspubs hotel, The Blackfriar. The pub itself was built in 1875 where the Medieval friary previously existed. It references jolly monks throughout the interior in mosaics, and of course the black friar guarding the front of the pub itself. The food was everything I imagined British pub food to be, tasty and hearty comfort food. I had the steak and ale pie which had a golden crust and was filled with delicious piping hot steak filling. The vegetable accompaniments were cooked beautifully and very fresh. Our party also enjoyed sausages and mash, cheese and bacon burger, fish and chips with mushy peas and garlic butter schnitzel. Everything was very good. London is experiencing some very hot weather and the pub was definitely not designed for this so it was uncomfortably hot. We ended up taking our drinks outside to enjoy where it was much nicer temperature wise. If you are after a hearty meal with a lovely British pub atmosphere then I recommend The Blackfriar.

This is one pub you'd want to stop at whilst in London. It's an unusual building with a ln awesome interior - reliefs of monks on the inner walls and a seating area at the back that marble panels/enclaves. Quite unique and impressive especially for a tourist seeking out an interesting place to have a quick pint. It can get busy and folks are often standing outside with their beers. We really liked it when we've visited London and have been here a number of times on our trips in the past and looking forward when I am in London next to drop in for a drink. (Food looked good but we have not tried any yet - perhaps next visit).

Amazing historical pub in Blackfriars area. The inside of the pub is completely decorated, very nice atmosphere. I had lunch there, I ordered the Steak & Nicholson’s pale ale pie, the food was very good and the beer aswell. Totally worth it!

Excellent pub, stunning and interesting on the outside, even more so on the inside. It's like drinking in a museum (even has leaflets to explain the history) yet still retains the authentic pub vibe. We'll worth a visit and loads of seating outdoors of the weather is nice.

Really nice old traditional British Pub - everything is old. No AC inside however that is to be expected in a bar this old. Nice outside seating area and a large selection of beers including Guinness, Amstel, Peroni, Camden Pale Ale, London Pride etc.

Great pub ...really beautiful and historical. Built in 1875 and was originally a Dominican friary. The architecture and decor is fascinating. Not to mention its collection of brews . The pies 🥧 are recommended, definitely a must try

Famous for its history with very lovely interiors. The fireplace was insanely beautiful. Food was also unexpectedly delicious. Highly recommend the fish and chips - loved the pea smash.

If you want to have a classic fish and chips under a beautiful historically decorated bar. This is the place to visit. If you want to sit in the dining area make sure you make a reservation. Otherwise, the main floor is first come first sit.

Spent a few hours here inside and in the adjacent beer garden watching the Lord Mayor’s Show parade pass by. Lovely characterful pub with great atmosphere and selection of ales and beer. A group of Morris Dancers added to the quirkiness by singing some old traditional songs inside. Very busy but efficient service. Amazing.

Amazing gem of a pub if you want to see something very different on the inside compared to the average pub decor. The beers and food are good as would be expected of a well known pub, BUT the real draw is the alabaster moulds and marble that adorn the interior. Well worth a visit.

Although looking ropey on the outside due to scaffolding, my favourite pub in London is a true gem. Lucky to find it almost empty on hottest day of year, was able to take these photos. Its been packed out on previous visits. Oh, and great beer and food too.

Worth visiting for the decor alone. Relaxing pub with good food and a good choice of beers. Besides Blackfriars station.

Clean the spittoons, boy. Detroit, Chicago, Atlantic City, Palm Beach. Clean the spittoons. The steam in hotel kitchens, And the smoke in hotel lobbies, And the slime in hotel spittoons: Part of my life. Hey, boy! A nickel, A dime, A dollar, Two dollars a day. Hey, boy! A nickel, A dime, A dollar, Two dollars Buy shoes for the baby. House rent to pay. Gin on Saturday, Church on Sunday. My God! Babies and gin and church And women and Sunday All mixed with dimes and Dollars and clean spittoons And house rent to pay. Hey, boy! A bright bowl of brass is beautiful to the Lord. Bright polished brass like the cymbals Of King David’s dancers, Like the wine cups of Solomon. Hey, boy! A clean spittoon on the altar of the Lord. A clean bright spittoon all newly polished— At least I can offer that. Com’mere, boy!

Here for the interiors and old pub experience. Didn’t disappoint! Place has so much character. Wouldn’t necessarily come here for food but the beer and ambience made up for it. Service can be slow because they’re usually busy but staff at that time was really nice.

(Translated by Google) Was there for breakfast with colleagues in 2018. If I hadn't had to go back to DEU on the same day, I would certainly have danced in for a beer again in the evening. I think the shop is very awesome. And the staff was really nice too. When asked, she even brought bacon to the scrambled eggs.

This pub is so great. We happened to walk by it on an evening stroll and I’m so happy we went in. The food is amazing (I got toad in the hole) and very well presented, the atmosphere was great and the staff were very friendly. I also got mulled wine which they offer during the holiday season - so fun. I will definitely come back :)

I was looking forward to the "Award winning steak & ale Pie" but sadly I was disappointed, too much pastry and not enough filling, A Fray Bentos would probably beat it in all departments ... It's also way overpriced for standard pub grub ... Lovely old building though ...

Five of my friends and I visited this pub yesterday. Without no doubt the worst experience of my life, it was denigrating the treat of a staff member, it seemed to bother her that we were Spanish speakers (we speak English). They made us feel unwelcome. Also social distancing measures are not been taken seriously, we were seated 6 of us on table of 4, that had a sign "not in use to keep social distance". We left after 2 drinks because we couldn't stand it. I don't recommend this place.

Cracking spot. Got the train in from Richmond to Blackfriars, I really only wanted to use the toilet but I wouldn’t never go into a pub without buying at least a half, well let me tell you I stayed for 2! The place is beautiful, it’s an ornate touch of Parisian chic in the most unexpected place imaginable. Amazing pub.

What an experience!!!! My day trip in London had one requirement...It must include a pub lunch at A TRUE ENGLISH PUB! The Blackfriar, more than delivered on this wish. This beautiful Ale House delivered more than great food, awesome beer and gin selection from local brewers and distillers as well as international ones. It also delivered a spectacularly beautiful and aesthetically pleasing and authentic “feel”. I had a pie of the traditional English Pie menu. Spectacular. So tasty. And the service...quick, friendly, and professional. I was surprised at finding a Tandoori Chicken and a few modern salads on what I had hoped would be an all English Traditional pub grub menu. Hearty and moorish. But, all it proved was that this pub has everything for everyone and every taste. I reckon this place is an absolute must visit for every tourist looking for English, and every local looking for a special kind of awesome.

Ok pub, nothing that special to comment on. I was not that impressed, not that it is that bad it is just not memorable. To borrow Churchill's comment about Clement Attlee, "a modest pub with a lot to be modest about". I appreciate the pub's clarification on the misappropriation of my quote. One day I will return to see if three stars is fair.

This place should be closed down for the safety of everyone. They aren’t taking the current Covid pandemic at all seriously. Tables too close together. No dividers. Nobody ensuring customers complete the track and trace information. It’s shambolic.
