The Captain Kidd

Bar Pub

👍👍 There are some amazing riverside pubs along the north bank of the Thames between Limehouse and Wapping. This, in my opinion, has the perfect balance of a large, dark wood, nautically-themed interior with a large outdoor terrace. Steeped in history, this building is a gem. On a very hot August aft... People often mention good, river, Wapping, beer, nice, great, lovely, Thames, large, Kidd,

There are some amazing riverside pubs along the north bank of the Thames between Limehouse and Wapping. This, in my opinion, has the perfect balance of a large, dark wood, nautically-themed interior with a large outdoor terrace. Steeped in history, this building is a gem. On a very hot August afternoon, we got to sit in the beautiful bay window with a lovely breeze blowing over us. The only downside, as an ale drinker, is that it’s owned by Samuel Smith. The only offering that I enjoy is their wheat beer. Other than that the staff are friendly and there is a nice mix of visitors and locals.

Arrived early Monday evening approximately 5:20pm into dim lit quiet atmosphere. Traditional old Wapping pub, lots of history and memorabilia on walls. Bar staff engaged in small friendly conversation whilst taking drink and food order, informed us kitchen opens 6pm, suited us fine. Ordered 1x beef pie meal and 1x fish & chips with mushy peas meal. Sat outside in lovely outside space, enjoyed the Thames Riverside seating. Returned back inside to warm up. At 6pm we were told they were out of beef pie, to order something else. Ordered scampi meal with peas. Meals arrived hot accompanied with tartar sauce, asked for ketchup and hot sauce. Meals were lovely. We shared a sticky toffee pudding with hot custard, good portion. Meals were great quality, value for money ratio reasonable. Overall a pleasant quiet evening tradional meal.

Unassuming, grounded confidence that this is an outstanding riverside, dockland tavern. The plain street exterior hides an absolute beauty. A cobbled entry way leads to a fairytalesque sprawl of cubby corners and window bay seats. A generous outdoor plaza borders the river with bench seats looking out over an interesting urban jungle from heritage dock houses to Canary Wharf. The greatest selection of Samuel Smiths beers you'll find are interesting and unusual. A very relaxing place to chill, chat and dream.

Really nice pub. Loads of space downstairs and outside. Yet to check out upstairs for food. Prices were £5 cheaper than I was expecting, so will be back very soon. Cocktails were quick and easy. The most orderly single-file queue for a bar I have ever witnessed!

Went here with some friends for Sunday roast. “Lemon & Thyme Chicken” was 3 pieces of dry chicken breast with no trace of it being marinated properly nor cooked properly. The actual interior is really good, practically the only thing that deserves a star. This place could have so much more potential when it comes to food quality.

We went for lunch on a lovely sunny day. I had fish and chip and peas. The portion of peas was tiny but this is my only complaint. Lovely river view from both inside seating and outside seating. Would definitely go again

The Captain Kidd is a cosy riverside pub being just a short walk from Wapping overground. It has great views across the Thames towards Rotherhithe and beyond. It is a Samuel Smith's pub so it is their range of drinks but I do like their Extra Stout.

If you like the idea of being ripped off by a pirate-named pub, come here. It's a beautiful building, well decorated and boasts a wonderfully large Thames-side drinking area...the good points largely end there. Our reservation was lost somewhere although we had the confirmation email, service at the bar was somewhat shambolic, beer & drinks were pricey, and clearly the galley slaves had escaped as the food took a while to arrive despite no one else around us eating. A few minutes later I was able to locate some napkins, but no cutlery to be found anywhere in the venue. Lucky we'd ordered bar snacks --- which were ok and the portions decent although the nachos were comprised of mostly bottom-of-the bag teeny tiny bits of chips (boo) with lots of topping (yay) and tricky to eat without a fork. To try to wash away our overall disappointment, we ordered 2 glasses of Bailey's/ their brand Irish Cream liqueur. Sadly it tasted of a caramel milk drink with no kick. That's the last time I'll spend any money with these rapscallions.

Pub is very quirky & old, brilliant for a beer with friends. Would certainly recommend for a beer on the river 😊

Great little find, right on the river. It's a Sam Smith's so generally good value for money. About 5-minutes walk from Wapping station. I had a fizzy apple juice which was nice. There's a big outside area but the weather was rubbish so we stayed inside where it was warm. Watch out for the mice who make it even more authentic!!

A good Sam Smith pub offering a great selection beers, however a really poor selection of wines. The loos were also in dire straits, the women’s looks pretty much flooded with water all over the floor around the loos (I only hope it was water). The upside is that there is plenty of seating - considerably more than the Prospect of Whitby, and we were able to get a bench outside in their large courtyard. Staff regularly came round to collect up empty glasses.

Came here for drinks on a Sunday. Granted it was a Sunday, but it still felt particularly dead which was a shame. Cozy setting though! My main issue was that our table was next to the bar, and the bartender seemed to make it a point to sit on his phone right next to us. That really took away from the intimate conversations, as it felt like we had a third uninvited guest sitting with us. Can't speak for the good, didn't get any, but I imagine it would be pretty standard pub food!

Booking system didn't work so our table wasn't reserved, and then no roast on the Sunday we went and then they somehow ran out of mash. Drinks have also gotten very expensive over the years, considering it's a Sam Smith's and the beer quality is lesser anyway. Come if you want average/poor beer but with a nice beer garden and Thames-side view.

Stopped for a drink here Sat, lovely welcoming young barmen. Great service, good prices. Had a blister from walking, they went and dug out plasters for me and couldn't have been kinder. Made a nice change in this sometimes hectic world. Thank you

Eye-wateringly expensive, once-great pub with comically uninterested bar staff. Still a tourist / Insta trap and always busy- particularly when the sun shines (good views of the river from the garden- although the ones from the Prospect of Whitby are far better). Extra star coz it's still a beautiful building

Reviewing this bar, it's another excellent addition to the Sam Smith's pub family. If you're in search of a peaceful atmosphere, this one is definitely worth a visit. Situated alongside the Thames River, it boasts a fantastic beer garden. Well worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Stunning decor! The upper floor is even more amazing with fresh breezes and great views of the river and Canary Wharf. The food and desserts we had were delightful. We had a good time.

Atmospheric pub on the water in Wapping. There's a big garden Riverside that must be wonderful in Spring/Summer. Had lunch with friends with mixed results. My BLT sandwich was not very nice but my friends meals of fish gougins, and spicy prawns were delicious and plentiful. I will return but maybe have the hot options next time.

I have lived in Wapping for over 20 years, there are quite a few pubs in this area but my favourite is the Captain Kidd. I’ve never known for staff members to be so polite and friendly. When I came I didn’t know it was a Sam Smith chain and they explained everything from the food to the drinks to me. I will be returning again and definitely for a Sunday Roast. Thank you again to Molly, Cisqo and Rio to helped me. India x

Ace place. Decent pub garden right next to the Thames, delightful to sit out in while the Sun shine. Fantastic inside with lots of wood and different levels. Had a tasty couple of pints of Samuel Smith's cask ale highly recommended.. Overall a great pub.

Spacious pub with a lovely courtyard overlooking the river. Pub food was fine and the Sam Smith's beer was very nice.

One of the greatest pubs I ever been. Amazing atmosphere of old classic British pub. Very interesting history of that pub. It's not far from there where famous Captain Kidd was hanged. Also the pub is located near Execution dock, where pirates were hanged. Inside you can find a lot of interesting information about pub and captain Kidd. Interior is very classic and beautiful. And the best thing is the view for the Thame River. I will definitely return in summer to enjoy the Riverside garden.

🚇 Wapping 🍺 £4.60 Double Four Lager ❤️ An exceptional Sam Smiths boozer in the heart of Wapping. . The Captain Kidd sits on a quiet cobbled street and is just a short two minute walk from Wapping overground station. From the outside you would hardly know there is a pub here unless you look up and see the pub sign above the entrance. As you enter, you walk through a small courtyard and then through in to this Grade II listed pub. This pub used to be an old coffee warehouse and was converted to pub back in the 80’s when the area went under a period of redevelopment. The pub is named after the notorious pirate William Kidd who was executed nearby at execution dock for murder and piracy. There is a nautical theme to this pub and the decor is very oldie worldie, there are large wooden beams spanning the pub held up by reclaimed timbers which resemble those of a ship. The atmosphere here was great, the pub was fairly busy on this Saturday afternoon with a mix of drinkers and diners. The pub offers superb views across the river Thames and has a lovely outside space to enjoy a drink on warmer days. The service was good and prompt, I had a pint of Double Four lager which was enjoyable and at £4.40 was good value. . This Sam Smiths pub is full of charm and delight and I really enjoyed my visit here, this is an excellent atmospheric boozer and a must visit when in Wapping. . 📊 Information correct on visiting 12/03/22
