Classic pub for a pint or meal, or both. Charming interior appointments include a genuine fireplace, plus indoor and outdoor seating. We enjoyed our beers and some fish and chips, plus the risotto plate. You order at the counter, and they bring the food to you. Prices are reasonable and service was prompt and friendly. Stop by for a enjoyable break.

Extremely unfriendly staff. We booked a table for the France-Hungary football match. (2pm, June 19) upon arrival we were informed that our table was indoors. We asked if we could be seated outside as that’s were we wanted to watch the match and the online booking system didn’t allow to pick outdoors or indoors. The staff had no intention to help or have an apprehensive conversation about the problem. It was 2pm and all of their tables outside were free at that point, 50% of them with booking from 5-6pm. We explained that we would only stay for 90 minutes which is the duration of the match. The host lied and said that all the tables were booked from 2pm. There were 2 tables taken at that point in the garden, as the pictures show below as proof and most of them booked later in the evening. We also suggested that we would immediately move from a table if anyone comes. The answers were unreasonable and illogical and totally out if context not related to the query. They went along the below lines: “Do you know how a reservation system works, have you ever done it?” “It is not our fault that Boris has this and that regulations in place..” Completely irrelevant and illogical responses and just simply unhelpful. At this point we didn’t have the time or option to book another place. We decided to watch the match from outside of the pub from the street. The pub should spend some time with training their staff to have basic problem solving and communication skills. Not recommending this place.

Initially, we only planned to see the exhibition upstairs...Artist: Sandra Mujinga. We didn't realise we'd be able to get a table. So we ended up having a few beers and some yummy snacks. Staff were so friendly and welcoming...all very mindful about social distancing etc. We felt very comfortable. Great outside space. Please venture upstairs when you visit... brilliant artworks! Thanks guys we had a great afternoon. Will visit again.

It's a wonderful place. My friends invited me last Tuesday to Halloween pop quiz. It was fun. The food is tasty, team is friendly, atmosphere is warm, decorations for Halloween are really creative and stylish, they guy who led the pop quiz was also fun. I also adored seeing a pictures of the pub on the wall, I appreciated the pub survived bombardment of London in WWII and now is flourishing. It gives me a lot of hope for my nation, as the Ukrainian. Thank you, dear team, for a nice night.

Excellent selection of drinks, friendly & helpful staff... just wish they had decent vegan food options. Come on team Approach Tavern you can & should do better! So many of us are opting for compassion instead of cruelty & I hope you will soon too. ;)

Ordered the roast pork and it was a decent roast for the price. Also was nice being able to walk into a pub on a Sunday without a booking !

We've been a few times for pints but finally managed to try the food too! We had the lamb, veggie and beef burgers outside and have to say that the beef burger was the highlight. Friendliest staff and nice dog friendly environment always

Lovely food and drinks with the added bonus of an outdoor seating area to the front - which is also heated in colder weather - the back of the pub looks lovely in the evenings - great :)

It's so good to finally be back to the Approach Tavern after such a long time. The quality of the food is sublime, Chef Luca never disappoints you! The new entry Hot chocolate and avocado brownie sandwich with mango sorbet (picture attached) is a real treat, you must try it :)

Nice beer garden. Decent selection of beers. I haven’t tried the food but I’ve seen Sunday roasts being brought out and they looked really good.

Great outdoor seating area on a quiet street. Nice choices for Sunday roast and the food was good. Friendly service. The proximity to Victoria park is nice.

Unfortunately we just didn’t enjoy it today. Food took way too long (just under 2hrs) and it wasn’t as good as everyone said it would be. Unfortunately the pork was just way too sweet. Service was ok. On the plus side the drinks were really good!

Had a great chat with the young guys behind the bar, super friendly atmosphere. Great pints and a good looking bunch, the food was brilliant too. Would go back 100% and would recommend it highly to anyone in the area! x

Lovely stout on cask and probably the largest Sunday Roast I have ever had inside the M25. Great pub but it really could use some painting and plastering and the lavs do smell a bit. Keep up the good work but don't be shy with a spot of maintenance.

The roast was absolutely delicious. The gravy has this interesting soy sauce umami flavour (wish there had been more!) Red cabbage instead of white cabbage and whole green beans instead of peas was a welcome change. Service was a bit confusing (table service or not?) and there were no menus left at the end of the night so our big group had to share one. At 7:09 we went to order dessert and got told the kitchen closed at 7. More communication would be great! As someone who also works at a pub in East London it’s standard practice to go around before the kitchen closes on a Sunday to inform those with roasts to get their desserts in while it’s open. I would really recommend coming here for a roast though! So delicious.

The place was buzzing on a Sunday lunchtime. We had a selection of small plates, delicious. Great beers and staff in a proper old school, Victorian pub.

Stepping into this charming pub feels like entering a cozy haven on a crisp evening. The warm crackle of the open fire immediately sets the mood for a delightful experience. The ambiance, coupled with the inviting aroma of hearty English ales, creates an atmosphere that simply beckons relaxation. The selection of English ales here is nothing short of glorious—each sip feels like a toast to tradition and craftsmanship. But it's not just the beverages that steal the show; it's the ambiance, the friendly staff, and the conversations that flow effortlessly around the comforting glow of the fireplace.

A nice pub with a nice outside however we booked a table for 12 for a birthday, but it wasn't really for 12 and people had to stand all night. The real kicker was a live band started setting up right next to us about 30 minutes in and played from 8 until closing. Couldn't hear a thing, couldn't speak to the friends we wanted to catch up and celebrate with. No one wants to listen to a band on a Saturday at the pub, and if it's booked at least let people know when they're booking a table for a birthday.

Went to The Approach for a pint and food after work. Nice calm atmosphere in the pub. Lots of beer and cider choice on tap. Food menu was written on a chalk board at the bar which was a fun touch, got the soy + harissa chicken supreme, halloumi and quinoa and deep fried artichokes. All dishes were delicious and pricing was good for the great quality!

Lovely pub, food wasn't bad and on a Saturday evening for a birthday celebration and a great location. My favourite point in the evening was when the bartender who I will refer to as 'Tantrum' in a plaid shirt proceeded to serve 4 people on the bar whom arrived after me and told me to 'go in the corner and be quiet' after asking him politely to actually take my order and the woman at the bar's waiting very patiently after he had finished his order. Tantrum then threw a tantrum like a 15 year old who had been told to clean his room after offering to serve the lady before me whom had been waiting, of which she politely passed and asked him to serve me first (I was aghast at such incredible manners and awareness of the situation). Am I being too unreasonable to serve people who come up to the bar in order? Okay, I thought that was the norm on the bar, especially with no more then 5 people waiting. Do you need to react like I just finger blasted your cat while keeping eye contact with you if I politely ask you to serve me so I don't have to wait a further 15 minutes at the bar so you can do your job well and not ignore your patrons and customers? Okay then. Definitely a memorable experience at the very least. Cheers guys, rest of the staff seemed lovely. Oh - I'm a barista and bartender of about 15 years including training and developing people in the role. So a large part of my life has been doing this job and doing it well. 🙂

Absolutely loved this pub, found myself returning there quite often when I was staying nearby. Great staff, solid pub atmosphere. I was a huge fan of the food, and between us my partner and I tried most of the mains on the menu (and a broad selection of the tap beers and ales). Cozy outdoor covered area with dispersed heating. I'm living a solid 40 minutes walk away now but I'll probably take a wander one day soon just to go back.

A great pub opposite the school I used to work at (now closed down). Many a happy hour spent with Warren having taught maniacs. Miss the place. Recently back to celebrate the life of John Taiwo who was a colleague. It's still great.

Four of us went for a meal. One of us a vegetarian but only bean burger on the menu. We had haddock and chips, burger and chips and two home made steak and stout pies. Everything was over cooked. The pies came with hard mash, burnt un trimmed runner beans, tough old beef and no gravy. The pastry was nice. The haddock was really dark and almost burnt, the fish dry as a bone. We complained and the lady said thanks for letting us know, next time you come in we’ll give you a free drink! Err this is not good enough and we are unlikely to return. The guy serving drinks couldn’t raise a smile and wasn’t very helpful. To eat out these days isn’t cheap so when you do you expect a certain quality, this was not the case.

Very friendly staff and nice atmosphere outside. Excellent pub food (we had the fish and chips and the cumberland sausages). Very decent prices as well. Definitely worth coming back.

Fabulous friendly staff. Great food. A wonderful atmosphere both inside and out. An extremely varied selection of wine and beers. Very competitively priced especially compared to other pubs in the area. Good for couples, groups, kids and dogs. All packaged up in a proper old school East End pub style. Love this place!
