While you expect a hostel to be rough around the edges, this is in need of some serious TLC. The kitchen looked like it hadn't been cleaned in weeks, the 'terrace' is actually an enclosed courtyard which is primarily used as a smoking pit - not nice if you're a non smoker so we avoided. The door on the room next to ours banged all night with some over excitable Spanish girls constantly going in and out. While the noise of the guests isn't the hotels responsibility, there was a soft close on our door so it didn't bang, so I'm not sure why it wasn't fitted to all room doors. There were no staff in sight to speak with about asking the occupants of the room to quieten down. The toilets themselves were clean - the toilet room was not. Dust and dirt everywhere. Showers were mouldy. Beds were extremely hard, and were unstable. The slightest movement from someone would send it swaying. Pillows lacking pillow protectors. No sound proofing so could hear everything - for example the water pumps churning water around the building every time someone used the bathroom. Curtains no more than thin sheets covering the window. In short you get what you pay for....

They have to locations and when you book they don't tell you. And when you get you might find you need to go to the other place. The other place is not far, but it has no reception and not eating place. The WiFi is slow and barley opens anything than WhatsApp and Google map. I got there 1 am. They told my bed is in the other building. I aske for luggage room and they said there is enough space on my bed with a lock. My luggage was heavy and they saw it. When I get to the other building, I found my bed is in 4th floor. Stairs in the other building are narrow. Toilets had a very small non useable handwashing sink. The toilet was so small with barley one can fit in. The pressure of water in bathroom was so bad. All photos you see are from their main building. So do not decide about booking before making sure that what room in which building you are going to book.

Great value for money hostel in the heart of London! The location is great, meaning you can walk or easily get a bus or tube to the big touristy spots. The service was really friendly and they are happy to help out! The rooms and bathrooms are relatively clean, not bad for a hostel. We were in the building which is a 2-3 min walk away from the main hostel, really not an issue as you get a key card/code to access both buildings. They also provide a breakfast for 3 pound which is mainly basic breakfast food but can save you money rather than buying out!

I stayed in Astor museum hostel near British musuem. I didn't know that if you choose basic bed then you will in another building 5 minutes away from given location. Room was basic and bunk bed had no charging points, no back support. It's very cheap. The problem was that there was no atmosphere, I just went to my room. There wasn't any common space or lobby to meet people in building. Even the basic thing like water glass or drinking water was missing. Only good thing was location was next to British musuem. There are only 2 toilets and showers and in morning, I had to wait a lot.

After staying here, we genuinely wonder how the reviews are this high. Location wise we can’t complain. However, having stayed in 10+ places over the month, we can attest that the facilities in this hostel are severely lacking - notably when it comes to cleanliness. The rooms are small and bunk beds are not very stable, there was a collection of dust in the corners and on the walls alongside cobwebs that triggered our allergies. My mattress was caved in on one side leading me to slip off the bed whenever I went too close to the edge. Not very soundproof at night and not much air flow in the rooms either. It can get quite hot. Pillows were not covered well and so thin you might as well not use a pillow at all. The shower ceilings were covered with mold and had a strong mildew scent… The staff is quite friendly. Overall, if a bed is all you need then this hostel does the trick but we highly recommend looking elsewhere for a pleasant stay.

The only good thing about this place is the location. Everything else is subpar. The service, the fact that we had to stay in a separate building and only learned about it when we checked in at midnight (and then had to walk in the rain to the right guiding). But the worst has to be the cleaning. The second building’s hallway perpetually smelled to pee. The rooms were filled with dust, and the blanket was absolutely dirty (as you can see in the picture). Disgusting.

My friend and I stayed at this hostel for a few days and it was overall good. Our first impression wasn't that great due to the area seemed a little dirty and hard to find but after a day we realized it is a good place to sleep if you are trying to save money. It's in a good area for exploring the city. Will stay here next time I'm in london

Easily the worst hostel I have stayed in. The rooms and building are atrocious. The photos on the website were not even close to what our room looked like. Ours has old carpet that looked like it had never been cleaned, uncomfortable beds, was dark, and for some reason they installed power bars that have a bright red light right beside your face when using the USB chargers. The bathrooms were generally mouldy and unclean and you have to dry your hands with toilet paper because none of them have any paper towels. The building we stayed in is actually in another location from the main building so if you were using the fridges or kitchen you would have to walk about 3 minutes to another building. They don't tell you that until you get there of course, but they say it is "quieter" even though you can hear everyone coming and going up the stairs and most of the doors slam shut. The location is great, but that is the only redeeming quality of this place. Do not stay here if you value yourself. Even if just sleeping there, spend a few extra pounds and go somewhere else.

Astor Museum Inn was my first stay in London while I was searching for a permanent accomodation. The hostel had a great role in making me less homesick and more enthusiastic about the future here. The hostel is always clean and the rules are simple which keeps it a very efficient place with so many guests. The kitchen is the life of the place, I got to meet some amazing people and hear their stories, so different to mine. The staff, all of them are very professional and equally friendly. Their commitment to the hostel is quite evident because they are just a call away at all times. The hostel is right in the centre of London which makes it more appealing. I loved my stay there and I will miss the happy vibes of Astor.

Great location but don't wait for anything else. Stayed at the second building, the facilities were not good. The rooms are small and bunk beds are pretty old, so much so that when someone even just breathes the bed makes a squeaky noise. There is a shared toilet and shower outside and the shower on our floor was locked the first day. They unlocked it only on day 2. The toilets were also not sufficient for the building. The toilets at the ground floor were not looked after greatly, hence when one entered the building the whole ground floor and even first floor unfortunately smelled like urine... The staff are helpful and they immediately changed keycards when it stopped working on day 2.

Great for pub crawl, partying and Drinking. After 10/11pm you can go outside the hostel and drink & the lovely staff with their friends will join you almost all the time :). Location, great. Kitchen, dirty. Sometimes, some staff take your good stuff and don't acknowledge. When you inquire, they don't care and pass you to each other. Management, weak. Especially when they send you a guy to threaten you even when you are politely raising an issue with the receptionist he comes and gets (even though he is not working) involved and threatens you to call police or kick you out. Under council licensing agreement they cannot discriminate you or kick you out for raising an issue. Discrimination is not racism. Toilets blockages. Overall, this hostel should be converted to luxury on suits one so it can keep up with the value the road is offering.

We were in a private room on the third floor right next to the restrooms. I had terrible nights of sleep because of the noisy water pump you hear whenever someone opens the tap or takes a shower. You could also see light from the hallway through the door. There was only one toilet per floor which is not a lot. The mattress and pillow were really not comfortables. On a good note, the staff was really kind and helpful.

Talking about the "hotel" service, for 70£ for a night the room for two is small, very very dirty, we don't have a private bathroom, the shared toilette is dirty. We can't see the difference between private room "hotel" and hostel! We only pay more money

Beds are comfy, staff are great, showers work well, good sized kitchen, nice lite lounge area with a PlayStation (with Netflix) a few games, books and even a couple of guitars

My first hostel experience and I absolutely loved it. The staff is very helpful and the beds are very comfortable. I especially recommend the breakfast option, it's awesome. It's located next to the British Museum and very easy to reach by Underground. The people I shared my room with were wonderful and it was such a great opportunity to connect to other travellers. I highly recommend staying there and will definitely come back the next time I visit London.

Great location, but building has two sites so reception is a couple streets over from the places I stayed. Bathrooms were a bit unclean but for a hostel it’s on par! Staff were great

I enjoyed my stay here. Safe for a female solo traveler. Clean facility. Bed was good for a hostel. 2 close tube stations and 1 bus stop on the block. Only critique is that I had to pay for a towel. I wish they were included in the rate.

Great location, okay hostel for London... BUT got valuables stolen from my locker stealthily. Everything was put back together and not showing any signs of breaking in. Staff would have known there's value as I asked if the luggage area is safe, and wasn't told about the lockers in front of cctv. So there's a feeling someone from there was involved... Also the fact one needs time to find ways to unlock/lock. No proof yet, but there might be soon. Anyhow, don't trust lockers from low life.

WATCH YOUR BACK. I booked this place direct, I chose it because the room was £18 a night during their kitchen renovation and that was a good deal. My reservation confirmation did not include the price, I was never given a receipt and come to find out, they charged me £70 total for two nights, and of course there's no way for me to prove I booked at a lower rate. Emailed and they condescended saying "its probably your currency exchange rate." Its not. So, I paid above average hostel rates for a room in a noisy place with NO kitchen and ONE toilet for every floor. Also, the key card deposit becomes non-refundable if you don't have cash.

Check in was nice and easy, the staff ready to answer my questions. There was a code for the security door, and I feel this should be written down, as people like myself, will forget very easily. My room was in a separate building from the kitchen and laundry and other common areas. It was a couple streets away, but definitely dissuaded me from using common areas. The rooms were relatively clean, just superficial scuffs and scratches really. The bunk beds ladder was BAD and I slipped climbing down, and the sides of the ladder rungs are rounded, and no sides to it. The plug sockets at the head of the bed are very good, both normal sockets and USB ports. However I did have to ask a roommate how the USB ports worked (press the button next to the ports). The bedding was kind of what I expected, though the cover was rather thin for the time of year. The bathrooms are my biggest issue; 2 showers and 2 toilets for a whole building of people, at least 6 to a room, or more. It was very hard to get a shower because of this. Something I was rather concerned about was one of the sides missing on my top bunk. It would be okay if it weren't up against a bay window, where I could've fallen out of, onto the radiator below. Something like a privacy curtain could be nice, but I didn't expect much of that from Astor. The location wasn't half bad, decent distance to the bus stops so travel wasn't too bad. Had a little trouble finding the building at first, but I'll attribute that to the dark. The breakfast wasn't exactly what I thought it would be, but I managed to cook some scrambled eggs at least. Overall, don't expect a high quality hostel, this is definitely a "bed only" situation, fine for budget travel.

The sanitary conditions of the bathrooms & showers was horrifying. They smelt awful and it was evident they hadn’t been cleaned in awhile. I felt safe, the location was great, however it smelt and was not clean.

worst hostel ever. please avoid. half their rooms are located in a seperate building which doesnt have a common room, and have either a single toilet or a single shower per FLOOR. and i am sure the building itself is full of fire code violations. conjested stairwells and extinguishers used as door stops. i am suprised this service is allowed to run

I’ve stayed in probably around 10 hostels over the last year and none have this bad. The downstairs toilet and shower are absolutely disgusting. Was only meant to stay the one night, left to stay at a friend’s. Told staff at reception about stupid noise that I am aware comes with staying in a hostel but not to this capacity, also partially to do with thin walls too? And guy at reception just said okay 😂😂 Lack of respect to the highest! Do not stay here.. find better

  • 5/5 Brandi B. 10 months ago on Google
Room was clean, though trash needed to be emptied at some point. Not enough toilets (2) and showers (3) for 8 dorm rooms. Shower definitely needed to be cleaned. But- it was roomy, kitchen had everything we needed, location was convenient and not far from several tube stops, free coffee was so appreciated, staff were friendly, everything went quite smooth. Would definitely stay there again.

What a fun place to stay if you don't mind a hostel environment. Friendly staff, very clean, big kitchen, lots of private showers and bathrooms and what a great price compared to the hotels in the area. I highly recommend them!

Amazing place for solo travelers, clean toilets, friendly staffs, very inclusive environment, prime location. Would suggest if you want affordable stay and with city vibe👍 and definitely the staffs require a pay rise just for their smile while greeting.

One of the nicest hostels I’ve stayed in. Location was great - central, but not loud - staff were all SO friendly, kitchen was always clean, lounge was cosy & warm, Aitor’s astrology night was awesome (he knows his stuff!), bed was comfy enough, atmosphere was ideal for those travelling solo as the hostel itself is quite small, bathrooms were above standard, always clean. Thank you Astor Museum - I will be back :) x

  • 3/5 Vivian O. 9 months ago on Google
The hostel location is perfect and the staff is super nice, cheers to Aitor and the lady that sang like the Little Mermaid, they were both lovely. But the rooms are not clean at all, they don’t tell u that you’re gonna stay in a different building (like 4min away) WITHOUT reception or a common area. The toilets were not super clean but they were okay. It was really noise but what else can u expect from a hostel? It needs some serious maintenance cause the both buildings seem like there falling apart…

I'm seriously wondering what's up with all those 3+ reviews. One of the all-round-worst hostels I've been in London/Europe. But the location is indeed perfect, and it's cheap, so for anyone with very low standards it's more than fine.

Good experience to stay in Astor. The staff are very nice, helpful. I felt safe to stay during COVID. They cleaned the room, bathroom every day. When I come to London again, I will choose Astor! Thank you Astor!

Terrible experience. Cheap but bad on any possible front. The dorm was extremely small and with poor lightening, 2 out of the 4 lockers were out of use and no one at receptions cared to fix them, the building stank and the toilets were a nightmare, the lounge and kitchen are too small for the amount of people hosted meaning there was no space to sit, no space in the fridge,

Everything was great for my experience. Granted it's a hostel so if you expect 5*hotel quality accomodation you will be dissapointed. I have requested Female 4bed Bedroom and couldn't have been happier. The bedsheets were clean, each bed has power socket next to it + a light if like me you want to read a book. But the sockets are great help as usually there isnt many power outlets in hostel or they are far away from your bed. The room had a sink and a mirror so that was helpful as well. Generally quiet, location was amazing, right next to the British Museum. The check in process was smooth and the staff was very nice and seemed helpful. Worth the price as the quality is great for a hostel!

Positives: Amazing location, nice staff and accomodations. Negatives: Way too many beds in one room. The rooms become smelly from all the people.

  • 3/5 Swikar S. 2 years ago on Google
Firstly this hostel has an absolutely great manager who was very kind and patient with me as I encountered some problems before my visit. The hostel is also at a very convenient location as well as many theatres and restaurants are merely 10 minutes away on foot. I opted for a 12 bunk room which came with having to share the room with a lot of people which wasn't so bad in terms of my roommates' but sadly did result in a rough night's sleep as people kept coming in and out randomly and my bed just happened to be the one nearest to the door. I do wish that there was an extra pillow or the option to get another pillow though as the one I had wasn't so comfortable. Nonetheless, I had a pleasant stay for the one evening I was booked for. (3.5 but Google doesn't allow half a star)

Nice cosy hostel close to the British museum center to London city. Awesome people in the reception. Small rooms with shared bathroom best option for short and cheap stay.

  • 5/5 C S C. 1 year ago on Google
Location is fantastic. Great service from the reception. Room size is miniscule, cramped and upper bunk was hard to access because of the narrow steps and entry. And the most upper floor is a killer if you have heavy luggage. But the price is unbeatable.

Before my stay, I worried that I would be too old or fussy to stay in a hostel. I was absolutely wrong. The staff were so friendly and helpful, the rooms were comfortable, clean, and quiet, and the facilities were immaculate. I slept really well, I met friendly people, and I would pick an Astor hostel again in a heartbeat!

  • 5/5 Ally 1 year ago on Google
We had a really great experience this weekend! Probably the best deal in London considering how expensive the city is. The staff was very helpful, our room was clean, and the location was perfect.

  • 4/5 Chris B. 1 year ago on Google
Not the easiest place to find but the rooms were nice and the beds comfy by hostel standards. The rooms suffered badly during the heat however, though a fan was provided. Breakfast offering was quite poor, but overall experience was good. Would stay there again and would recommend the place. Special note: one staff member in particular went above and beyond to help me during an issue, despite him being hugely jetlagged. That alone is worth 4 stars.

  • 2/5 Michael P. 1 year ago on Google
Uncomfortable, poor wifi, and there is an annex several blocks away you may be placed in. Poor ventilation, forgetful staff. Do not recommend. Much better hostels elsewhere in London. Astor Museum is a scam. I booked for 7 nights, left after 3.

Great price for a private room in Central London. Staff were friendly and explained everything I stayed in a private twin room, this was situated in another building a few streets away. I don't think however it was explained in advance. May feel uncomfortable walking back at night if your a lone traveller. The other building is also not staffed, however room was very clean as were the shared shower and toilet, would stay again :)

Pros: Location was great in London. Fantastic and central location, right next to british museum, and lockers that can be locked to bed. Cons: squeaky beds, unclean bathrooms, unclean shower rooms, and cramped building.

  • 1/5 Dale N. 3 months ago on Google • 1 review New
Great location. rooms are quite depressing, and we actually booked a hotel 200mt away from it for 10 pounds more each, so price is not the best either. Service was great until we actually had a complain, unfortunately we decided not to stay as the people in the room behaved very strangely and the room smelled very bad. when we communicated this the receptionist was super judgmental and responded quite aggressively to the claim, he said this is a hostel, what do you expect. For me this is a terrible argument as ive been to hostels around the world and hostel doesn't need to mean a cheap place that is unsafe, dirty or horrible. Luckily the manager assisted, and we could come to terms. we paid one night only but we didn't stay any (better to lose some money then having to deal with other issues later) I would highly recommend if you are a woman to check other options as for example in our case, we were supposed to go in a little room with two guys that were a little strange in a building outside of the main entrance so no reps from the hotel were around. Is really not the best set-up.
