I stayed here for several nights in 2014, so my review may not reflect current staff/management, rooms, etc... I stayed in the bunk room in the front. Excessively hot as the fans were broken. Extremely loud all night bc the world cup was on. Someone kept pooping in the showers. Open food in the room drew rodents. Passive aggressive signs were placed to hinder both poops & open foods. I liked the cages under the beds to stow belongings. I also liked having to use a code to enter the room. The staff was fine, except they wouldn't tell me the time of day. I understand disliking Americans, but not all of us even like or agree with the existence the US...

I stayed here for almost 15nights and i loved it! Staff is really friendly and professional at their work. Property is clean and maintained regularly. Rooms are comfortable and housekeeping is done regularly. Thanks a lot Faisal & Daniel for your wonderful hospitality! Cheers!

My stay at the dictionary hostel was quite horrific to say the least. I was supposed to get a 6-bed dorm room but I ended up getting a 10-bed one. It's almost impossible to close your eyes and sleep correctly since the near-by clubs are loud as hell and that the walls aren't isolated at all. I eventually got my room after waiting for 1 hour because it was being cleaned. Cleaning is supposed to be done in the morning, not when your guests arrive. The restroom and the shower where quite disgusting as well. And the icing on the cake : the reception room smells like pee. I do not recommend you stay there.

Stayed here a few years back, the first room I was in in the cortyard could be accessed by the window from the outside, they claimed to have locked the doors at night but, well didnt so anyone couldve just wandered in. The place was under construction at the time, which im not going to complain about too much but was still not the best. No real recreation facilites were available from what I found. I havent stayed in many hostels so I cant say how well it stacks up compared to others but the bathrooms were tiny and some were unfunctional at the time.

So we went here with two friends for three nights We had a reservation to be in the same room (the three of us) and when we arrived they told us it wasn’t possible There was no hot water in the shower. Everything was very dirty. More importantly people in the rooms were rude and inconsiderate, turning the lights on in the middle of the night, taking your bed when you’re out to visit London. And no one cares ! Amazing I won’t come back here and you shouldn’t

When I arrived, the man informed me that my bed wasn't available and they had to relocate me. I wasn't offered a refund of the price difference, however, the guy assisting me was very friendly. The room was clean and the bed was surprisingly comfy. The hostel itself was quirky and colourful! Difficult to rate the location. I wanted somewhere quiet to put my head for the night and this place didn't offer that. There were extremely loud noises until gone 4am. However, if I'd wanted a place to go out partying, it would have been fantastic!

It was far cleaner than we all expected (due to the price). The breakfast was really good and the staff even cooked some things like sandwiches and cheese on bread and that. Our 10-people room was divided in two and our side had a lot of privacy. The staff was really wonderful and we didn't feel unsafe at any point. Also, it's really well situated and you can go almost anywhere in London within a 30-40 minutes period.

My boyfriend and I stayed 2 nights in the private double room n22. The hostel is in a perfect position to visit the city. The staff is kind and helpful. There wasn't the hair dryer in the room but I asked to the reception and they gave it to me immediately. The breakfast is good! There are also a lot of pubs and clubs in the street but the room was quiet, except for the floor that is quite noisy (we heard the steps upstairs). The room was small but clean and comfortable. I recommend it!

Bed was comfortable and decent shower and toilet. Breakfast passable. Unfortunately this hostel is not your thing if you're not used to nightlife as club music booms loudly in your room for majority of the night. Anyhow it's affordable and is in the very centre of a vibrant community in North East London

the staff is excellent, the hostel is young and very cheerful, breakfast included is very fair! I felt very comfortable during my stay, there were many options to do around and I was able to take the bus/metro to the most diverse destinations without the slightest problem. I just missed a plug near my bed lol. I will come back for sure!

Great team, great location and great rooms. I was happy with how they welcomed me! Very nice people working there. I will say that they are out of stock for adaptors and locks but the store next to the hostel got it. I was a little disappointed by the breakfast as they were no vegan option for milk but that's my personal preference. Also you may have to wait for a receptionist to help you but you may meet nice people in the mean time ;)

Great proximity to the markets and nightlife if Shoreditch and Brick Lane. Super easy check-in and friendly staff. Private rooms are great value, stylish, clean and have everything that could be needed. Depending on where in the hostel you are the noise can be an issue. We expected some disturbance (being on a main road) - but reviews suggested that it wasn't too noisy, unfortunately that wasn't our experience. The room we were in was as close as could possibly be to the neighbouring club. That, the seemingly single glazed windows, plus the lack of carpeting on floors/stairs higher up in the hostel meant no rest til gone 3am then being constantly woken up. So, perfect you plan on being out for longer than the clubs are open.

Very good price quality ! The people are so kind, it was his first check in and he nailed it !! (He even speak french!!) We had a bedroom for two, very nice and comfortable. We had good breakfast every morning. The localisation is great, you have a bus 24/24, just in front of the hostel and it goes to Leicester Square, perfect to party all night. I highly recommend it ! Thanks to the team ! ☺️

This hostel is clearly a very budget option so I was not expecting much from the private ensuite room. The room was simple, bunk bed, no table or chair. But I found it very clean and perfect for a place I arrive at late and leave from early. My only disappointment was that breakfast was only offered from 8 am. I had to leave before that.

I was here in 2017, so it might not reflect the current state. The Dictionary Hostel in Shoreditch, London, is a great choice for those looking to immerse themselves in the vibrant nightlife. It’s worth noting, however, that achieving a peaceful night’s sleep might be challenging due to the considerable noise from the street, particularly in rooms facing the road. The rooms, accommodating 6-8 people, are quite compact at 12 square meters and can get warm. On the positive side, the staff, breakfast, and location are commendable..

Sorry I don't like doing these things but we had booked months in advance with this place being on a tight budget we found it was a very good deal, only for our booking where we'd paid full price to then be cancelled by them 1 month beforehand... We then had to find a place end of June for August, so nothing was available or possible on a budget ! All because they must've overbooked the rooms and couldn't then be bothered to answer the phone... I wonder how many other people have had to change plans because of these things. Very disappointed.

The manager was incredibly helpful, however it sounded like there was a generator in the room with me all night and lots of banging about in the middle of the night. It’s okay if you just want somewhere to lay your head, but if you value your sleep spend the extra money and get a hotel room - I was disturbed several times during the night and for some reason there’s a long strip of glass in the door that lets a load of light in. I won’t be staying here I’m afraid.

We booked our stay at this hostel 2 weeks before our arrival to London - through booking.com. The day we were supposed to come, we received a message from booking that the hostel cancelled our stay (it ought to be mentioned we were on our way to airport when the message came). Some employee from the hostel with whom we discussed it over the phone the situation informed us that they cancelled it week ago and it was booking’s fault, which turned out to be lie. I have to praise the booking.com employees for their prompt assistance and for clarifying what actually happened - the hostel is usually overbooking their capacity and then cancels some of those reservations (including ours). The booking.com employee also told us, that we were not the only one who got cancelled on that day - it happened with another 4 reservations. Anyway, our situation fortunately turned out well, since we luckily found a new place with a way better and much more trustworthy staff. London is a beautiful city and has a lot to offer, but be careful where you’re about to book your stay!

At first I wasn’t sure if I should book a hostel as I’ve never stayed in any, but when I arrived I was pleasantly surprised. I was shown around by one of the staff members that made feel very welcomed. The room was clean and most of all I had a great night sleep. Will be coming back again next time I visit London

Value for money was good. The room (2 bed room with own bathroom) was very tiny. One bunk bed and hardly space to move. Towels were forgotten to be put in the room. Service was on the point and quick. Location is good in the middle of Shoreditch. Quite some walking to the next subway 🚇 (old street). Free breakfast was included (egg toasts were tasty) and some instant coffee and tea.

Had an amazing stay at The Dictionary Hostel! Perfect location to explore Shoreditch and easy commute around London. Clean and comfy beds, nice breakfast with plenty of options. The staff were super friendly. Would definitely stay again!

I've been to a fair amount of hostels all over the world so I normally know how to manage my expectations but this hostel just took the cake in terms of how horrific it was. It's dirty, the rooms are badly ventilated, they smell and there are barely any small windows to let sunlight in. The hostel sits on top of two nightclubs, it's impossible to sleep until the music turns off at 2 or 3am. I'm not a light sleeper by any means but even with earplugs AND noise cancelling headphones I could still feel my bed shaking from the bass, it was impossible to rest. The bathrooms are gnarly and there is barely any space to get changed in them. I was in a mixed dorm that was occupied exclusively by men and I did not feel comfortable changing in the room but there was barely any space to do it anywhere else. The "lockers" they offer are more like cages that are stored underneath the bunk beds. They're pretty useless if you want to actually lock them, other than that there's literally no space in the room to leave your stuff. There are no independent bed lights, no plug sockets and no facilities in the hostel itself that make the stay worth while in any way shape or form. The communal areas, if you can call them that, are unwelcoming and not taken care of. The hostel does not have a traveler vibe, it's more of a long term rental spot for people that are transitioning from one house to another or who are financially struggling. On top of this, when I arrived noone showed me around, or told me anything about the hostel. The staff also decided to rearrange the room I was staying at throughout the day, causing great inconvenience. I find it hard to understand why they didn't block off bookings for one day in the room and sort it out without hassling guests, it was very unprofessional. I booked for 5 nights and only ended up staying 2, I booked another hostel nearby and DIPPED. Don't waste your money on this property, there's literally no upsides to it.

I stayed here for one (possibly two) night in May 2018. It was my first ever intercontinental, international stay in a hostel. I stayed in, I think it was a 16 or 12 person mixed gender room on the 2nd floor. There were lockers under the bunk bed to lock your valuables. I believe there was wifi, which was fast. There was also some free breakfast. I'm talking milk, eggs i think and granola, as well as toast. Not bad. Yes, there was some loud music playing, but it stopped playing at night for bedtime and started back up again in the morning. They have a collection of books on the lobby floor wall.

I stayed here for one night with three mates and couldn't recommend it more. All staff were incredibly friendly and helpful even before we had arrived, and the location couldn't have been better. We will be back!
