We had a beautiful day here. Initially booked for butterfly house (adult £6.50 and children under 3 are free) and it was very nice. There were many butterflies flying around and a small glass house with cocoons hanging. After that we went to the small Aquarium (adult £5) and my daughter enjoyed it soo much. They had a few museums for free which was very interesting Global Collection, Music instruments (with a lot of collections) and more. My daughter enjoyed walking through the small animal farm too. Outside they had a space to have picnic and a small pretty flower garden. We enjoyed it a lot :) The only critic i have are the prices in the cafeteria. It was very expensive! Next time we would bring our own food and have a nice picnic there.

My visit to the Horniman Museum and Gardens was an enriching and captivating experience. As a woman with a deep appreciation for culture, nature, and the arts, I was delighted by the museum's extensive collections of anthropology, nature, and music. The exhibits showcased a wealth of knowledge and creativity, presented in engaging and interactive displays. Exploring the anthropological artifacts allowed me to delve into diverse cultures, their traditions, and their unique stories. The natural history exhibits unveiled the wonders of the natural world, from stunning specimens to interactive educational features that brought the exhibits to life. The music collection was a harmonious journey, offering insights into different musical traditions and instruments from around the globe. The museum's commitment to providing interactive experiences truly made learning enjoyable and accessible to visitors of all ages. I left the Horniman Museum feeling inspired, enlightened, and with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the rich tapestry of humanity, nature, and music. It is a place that seamlessly combines education, entertainment, and exploration, making it a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a fulfilling cultural experience.

We had an absolutely amazing time today at the museum. My kids, 5 and 2 years old, were really intrigued by the specimen of the animals and the aquarium. The butterfly house receptionist was a bit aloof but the man working there was really friendly. He showed us a very long hanging caterpillar and made a butterfly origami for my daughter. She is holding on to it as her treasure. Thank you. The cafe is very efficient and clean and the food is one of the best in the parks and museums we’ve been to. The Guineas cake was superb. They are still serving delicious mull wine and mull cider as well as baileys hot chocolate. I went for a spiced pumpkin soup which was scrumptious for a cold day like today. The kids enjoyed their pasta and fish fingers. We also appreciated the drinking water stand where we refilled our water bottle. We really felt that a lot of thoughts have been put into making our visit enjoyable. Thank you so much to all the staff. One thing that could be improved is the online booking system. We kept having issues with it and ended up having to go to the visitor centre to get our tickets.

Fabulous museum and gardens. Cannot believe I didn't go before and amazingly it's free. Museum is really interesting and educational with a bit of everything. Natural history, science, fashion. Great for kids and adults. Really fun place. There's also an aquarium which has a small £3 entrance cost for adults. Very nice too. The gardens are magnificent, with great views over London. Also has a market on Sundays.

This is such a lovely museum. I took my two grandchildren aged 3 and nearly 6. They absolutely loved all the exhibits in the Natural History section. The aquarium was really well presented with a great variety of fish and aquatic plants and animals. The Dog and Cat Interactive Space kept them occupied for over an hour! Excellent value for money as there’s so much to do and see. Great restaurant (see pic) with good food at reasonable prices.

Great museum and gardens about 10 minutes walk from Forest Hill Railway Station. The museum, which first opened in 1901, has an excellent permanent collection covering areas including anthropology, musical instruments and natural history and has a small aquarium and a butterfly house. There is an exhibition on at the moment about tea which runs until 7 July 2024. Well worth a visit.

Bit of a hidden gem! The Horniman Museum and Gardens is off the London tourist route and makes a great family day out. The Museum houses some wonderful artifacts and the Gardens offer a relaxing environment with some stunning views of the city. Well worth a visit.

A gem of a museum and the gardens are worth a visit too. There's a lovely little Market selling veg , produce and crafts on a Sunday, plenty of bike parking for cyclists and best of all (apart from special exhibitions) it's Free !!

First time visiting here in August. Would definitely return. Such a great museum and free too! Many gems within this museum. We particularly loved the Aquarium. I only wish it wasn’t so far 😃 (I live on the other side of the river) or I would come here more often. Would definitely recommend as a day trip for families.

Cracking day out with the kids. The aquarium is pretty good (can get very busy and crowded though) but the rest of the museum has plenty of interesting artefacts and the natural history area is great. Best in summer so you can enjoy the gardens too, which are beautiful.

This place is fun and cozy for families, couples, individuals, everybody. It features a small zoo with fluffy cuties and a view of London’s breathtaking landscape as a surprise upon your visit. In the zoo, there are rabbits of all sizes, alpacas, roosters, goats etc. Kids seem to love what they see here( so do adults) Animals also seem to be in good health/mood. It was quite of a relaxing experience to enjoy the sunbathing on the grass, especially during summertime. There is also a small cafe stall and a ice cream vendor outside the zoo. Good news, they have beer on tap available. The public toilet in the park is pretty much the cleanest park toilet I have ever seen in my life, with toilet paper and hand dryers that are working! This is Japan level kind of nice. Unbelievable! The museum per se is good too. Through the collection he possessed, you can tell how much money the owner had made from buying things from China and selling them to Brits centuries ago. There is also a room with stuffed animals, big or small. It is a bit similar to Natural History Museum.

First time here and what a fab day out it was! Free entry and only a small fee for The Butterfly House and Aquarium, both of which were great! The different museums are very interesting and lots to see. A great place to go as a couple or family and I will definitely be going back. They also do different events throughout the year which I will be trying out a few of them. Highly recommend to all.

Great place for any age! Besides being free for general admission the museum offers a broad range of historical and biological knowledge. There’s an interactive area for children where you can see a real beehive. The cafe has a decent selection of food on the pricier side. The gardens have sections ideal for children as well as areas where one can relax. On top of that there are a lot of little signs that give useful information about what the plants actually are. Definitely recommend this place for a day trip!

Had a lovely time visiting Horniman. We went to the cafe, aquarium, and walked through the park. It was midweek term time but worth noting the cafe was still heaving with lots of parents with young kids. The aquarium is small but fun and great for babies. There was a fair amount of maintenance work being done in the garden but still nice to walk through.

This is a museum that reflects the quirks of it's founder (the heir to the Hornimans Tea fortune) who was unrestrained in his passion for collecting items that are mostly anthropological or musical instruments! Entrance is free. Make sure you see, in the 16 acres of gardens, the totem pole and the bandstand with it's great views. Forest Hill Overground station is close by.

I’m so very lucky to live so close to such a gorgeous museum and gardens. The museum itself is like a small natural history museum with lovely Victorian exhibits and also the famous Walrus! Lots of new and interesting exhibits also with a wonderful music room. The animal walk and butterfly houses within the grounds are also a Must see!

Such a lovely place to leisurely walk about. Beautiful views, the animals outdoors are fun, the aquarium is quaint , the museum is impressive. I really like the way everything was displayed- very interesting items. It is small enough to do in a few hours or a day to enjoy it all. We did not visit the butterfly garden due to our own time crunch.

Such a great day in a beautiful location in Forest Hill. My favourite exhibition was the aquarium. It was just awesome to get close up to see the many different colourful fish, frogs, sponges and corals. It was amazing! There are several areas around the museum to look at from natural history to world history; so fascinating. To top it all off, there is a wonderful spread of gardens outside with an animal area and the most beautiful array of flowers and plants from around the world and throughout history. It is such a unique and gorgeous place. Although we didn't take any children, it is a super child friendly place. Really enjoyed it!!

The Horniman Museum is a fantastic destination for family outings, offering a captivating blend of wildlife exhibits, an indoor aquarium and a variety of cultural treasures. It provides an engaging learning experience for kids, and a great outdoor area for picnics or sporting activities as well as a mini animal walk and butterfly enclosure, making it a must-visit for families seeking a fun and enriching day out.

Beautiful place. Wide green areas where we can find a great variety of natural plant species. Native and endemic to various countries. We can also sit in the company of friends or family to chat and talk or just to relax and let the natural environment move us into an ecstatic situation. It is simply a privileged place to enjoy it and the living nature.

Great day out for the kids. The natural history section looks a little dated, but is cleverly laid out and has quite a few hidden gems! The giant walrus centrepiece alone is worth the visit. The anthropology displays have been beautifully refurbished and are a fascinating window into the world for both young and old. There’s a fantastic little aquarium, a butterfly house and even a few live goats, sheep, alpaca, rabbits and guinea pigs to see. By the time you’ve done all that, walked through the beautiful gardens and had a coffee in the gorgeous cafe, you’ll be ready to put your feet up!

There is bound to be something that surprises you here. A great day out with little ones. Aquarium, gardens and mini zoo are enough to keep them entertained. Take a packed lunch if on a budget, the food is good in the cafe but prices are high.

Beautifully park, well maintained and with tons of activities or things to do for kids and families. Burgers and ciabattas are very decent plus kiosks everywhere with beer, ice cream and cafe all around the park. Parking is not easy compared to other similar parks around but given the amount of stuff you can do here, it is worth the trouble! The view of the city is second to none, compared to other local and quiet parks around that is.

We visited on Thursday 10th for a home education workshop, a visit to the aquarium and also the new Cats and Dogs exhibition. The space was used well in all areas, loose covid restrictions but staff and visitors were still respectful of distancing etc. Wheelchair access is very good (parts are very steep and inaccessible but on the whole it works well) and each area we visited was clean and tidy. Staff are always helpful and friendly. The gardens are stunning. We love the Horniman Museum and recommend everyone to pay it a visit.

Visited with a friend on a Friday morning. I found parking on a road at tue rear of the museum there are a few roads where it is possible to park for free. It was a rainy day so perfect for a museum wander. I hadn't been since 1995 so it was great to look around and immerse myself in its weird and wonderful curiosities. It isn't the biggest museum but there is plenty to see. We got tickets for the Dinosuar evolution exhibit which really well put together with animatronic dinosaurs and artists impressions of what tuey looked like in their day. Despite being in term time there were a lot of children a class or two from a school I guess. Not a complaint as its great seeing kids interested in history etc but very loud. The staff were friendly and very informative.

It's a fun place to go rain or shine. This museum has a wonderful animal, cultural, and musical exhibit as well as a Cafe, animals nearby, and a market with hot Savory foods. It's popular so watch out for all the kiddos, they just come running every which way. I recommend the butterfly exhibit they have for some calmness if the museum is too full at the time.

A fascinating and compact museum offering thoughtful displays of natural and social history. I could have spent a day in the music room looking at the hundreds of weird and wonderful instruments from around the world. Plenty for adults and primary school aged children to enjoy. Great opportunities to learn in a visually stimulating environment. If I lived locally I would become a member.

Love this place, been visiting since I was a little girl. I didn't go to the museum as purely visited for a good walk and enjoy the gardens , view the London skyline you can see in the horizon, a spot of lunch in the beautiful conservatory and see the mini farm. The museum is free entry but you have to pre book for obvious reasons... I wish you a pleasant time when you visit ( the lasagne was great)

The museum and playground is great. It's expensive. I deducted stars because they didn't have sanitary products in women toilets. When you are with children and don't know the area it's hard to tear children away from museum to look. The staff were lovely today when the covid 19 rules were obeyed.

We came on a rainy day and We did have a great time inside and out side, museum, animal walk, music garden, gardens, butterflies house...etc. lot to do and see. Sunny we would enjoy better but rainy or shine there are still things you can do with little one. Butterflies house was a great fun for my toddler, also the music garden. He enjoy so much there. Oh caution. Butterflies house is tropical so. Even in winter you will feel warm in there, prepare to take off some layer first.

The house-museum of the largest tea industrialist-patron of his time, as I understand they all become philanthropists, as soon as they began to atone for the sins of the suffering of the people on whom they earned. A huge collection of stuffed animals, insects and butterflies, as I understand, he had enough money to afford such a whim, an extravagance for those times. As for a park, the name is too loud, exaggerated, if as for a personal plot, it is impressive. As overall, the collection evoked only positive emotions.

Very busy museum but situated with beautiful views and history. We went to the butterfly House, aquarium and lego Dino room which were extra. The butterfly House beautiful but expected to see more butterfly's around. We saw 10 butterfly's though so was nice. The environment beautiful though rainforest feeling calming. The Aquarium was intreasting I wish there was more than what we saw of course. Very nice for small children to try out though nice layout. Very busy when we went weekend at 12 but worth it for young children. Lego brick room wasn't worth the money in my view it was to basic. For the skill they have to make them it didn't feel value for money. The cafe was of course londons high end prices for drinks to basic snacks. Water is free of course for all customers. The seating area is lovely and family friendly but busy that day. Overall we had gone into another few rooms the place is nice and there is much to see. For sure family friendly and staff are very helpful holiday savours like this are great. Educational something for everyone. Worth support of people looking for something new and fun.

I absolutely LOVED the Horniman Museum and Gardens and thought the aquarium and butterfly house were very reasonably priced (the museum itself is free). I didn't pre-book any of my tickets and visited on a Friday afternoon. If you are in the vicinity it's well worth a visit. So much to see and learn and just enjoy! The natural history hall is AWESOME and absolutely full of stuff to keep young and old naturalists occupied. The aquarium, whilst small, is one of the best kept and presented and child friendly aquariums I think I've ever been to. I was very impressed and just stunned at all the anemones and corals growing. The butterfly house was wonderful- and the staff super helpful and friendly. The challenge to find caterpillars and eggs was tough, I only managed to spot one on my own before caving in and asking a staff member for help (which they happily obliged with, showing me numerous awesome caterpillars that had been staring me in the face! 🤦‍♀️). I actually walked from Nunhead as I visited the cemetery first - tip for anyone thinking about doing the same thing - go back to nunhead and catch the train to forest hills - the walk from Forest hills to the museum is MUCH flatter than the walk from nunhead to the museum 🤣🥵 (the majority of the walk is quite flat until you get to the very last part, which is very steeply uphill!). So if you have half a day to spend, it's well worth the visit.

We really enjoyed visiting here once again. We mainly came for the dinosaur exhibition, which did not disappoint. I used to regularly visit here as a child, and now, being able to bring my child here makes it so special! The Horniman museum has remained a great asset to Forest Hill.

Brilliant day out with the kids - annual membership is a great way to see all the attractions - butterfly house, aquarium, museum and there’s usually one or two exhibits on.

Wonderful gardens, great to walk around on a cold winters day. The zoo there is great for adults and kids with loads of animals to look at and interact with. The museum is also fantastic with the free area having loads of things to look at which is fantastic.

A really important part of my childhood growing up in south east London. Lovely park and the museum is great fun, especially for younger children. A shame you now have to pay extra for the aquarium when it always used to be free.

This museum is supposed to replace the Museum of Mankind, which was located in central London and contained superb pieces which were masterfully showcased. Here too there are some very beautiful pieces. Unfortunately there is a lack of peace and serenity to appreciate these objects at their fair value. The museum gardens would be more suitable for this kind of activity.

This gorgeous museum is an absolute gem. Not too enormous in size so you can cover it all even with toddlers. Some really well preserved displays and a divine Victorian glasshouse. Together with the amazing cafe, aquarium and gift shop, it's an absolute must-see!!

What a lovely place to have a stroll no matter what the weather is doing. I went to see the butterflies and that was awsome a really intimate venue, very well organised and socially distanced disciplined and lovely ladies in the reception area. It was a Sunday and there was a market on in the grounds. I had the best Californian breakfast burrito ever.

I'd completely forgotten how lovely this park is. Used to go regularly years ago when I worked in the school near by. Took my baby girl there last week and was shocked I'd forgotten about this gem of a place. The gardens are beautiful and with the butterfly house and farm animals as well as the museum, it's a fab place for a local day out.

  • 5/5 Stephen B. 3 years ago on Google
Small and packed, if you're on a free only visit to the museum it's quick but loads to see, the displays are well packed. The park is hilly but very cute, with an animal walk, cafe kiosks, and a market on Sundays. We paid to enter the Permian Monsters exhibition which didn't feel like the best value but couldn't deny the quality of the exhibits. Would definitely go back.

The gardens are a lovely breath of fresh air with spectacular views of London. Plenty of open spaces and seating, well provided with refreshments. The museum is part natural history, mainly stuffed animals, which is of limited interest and part ethnographic museum which is beautifully layer out and has some fascinating exhibits including the merman.

This museum was outstanding and way more than you can expect. It has a small aquarium, a natural history room filled with animals and birds and also a cultural exhibition related to other cultures. It is rich and full of what Mr. Horniman gathered while being a tea merchant in the 19th century!

Wow! I was blown away why is this museum is not as popular as the others I don’t know! But it’s definitely one of my favourite. Perfect size to be able to see everything at a leisurely phase, lots of informative bits and bobs. The children and myself thoroughly enjoyed it. The Gardens is also fab, you can have a picnic, have a nice walk around, there’s a mini golf and also a little farm. The Horniman is slightly eccentric compared to some of the larger London museums but they have a great display on anthropology around the world with loads of different sections which I really enjoyed. The gardens are pretty and big considering their location, and it's very conveniently located if you're based in South East London as you can drive and park nearby. There's also an aquarium which is cool (though you have to pay for this) and lots of stuffed animals which would be good for people interested in taxidermy, although this is avoidable if (like me!) you're not so keen on it!

I didn't know about this museum at all until it was mentioned by a friend that we go to visit it. So glad that I went along. By the time I had finished visiting the galleries, I felt as though I had been on a world tour in two hours! Absolutely mesmerising and fairly interactive. It has well set out gardens and a cafe. There is also a gift shop. The museum is free unless you want to go to the see the special exhibition and the aquarium. It even has a market on sundays Definitely worth spending a few hours here. Very easy to get to from Forest Hill station.

Fascinating museum but didn't explore it all. Going on a Bank Holiday was a mistake as it was very busy and quite loud. The exhibits are interesting but a little run down in places and it's confusing to have actual preserved species next to enlarged replicas. The gardens offer a great view of the city and there's a small section to walk through and see some animals (alpaca, sheep, goats among some others) free of charge.

It has been a good few years since I visited but I decided to go back to visit the Aquarium and the Butterfly House. Now, unfortunately I got down to the museum after 1 pm and spent so much time inside I'll have to do the Butterfly House as a separate visit. There is so much to see in the museum from the Aquarium, The World Gallery, The Natural History Gallery, to the Music Exhibition there is a lot to keep adults and children interested.
