I selected this hotel because I thought I'd be showing my wife a taste of classic London at the start of our honeymoon. The pictures and reviews on your site looked amazing. To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. I had spoken to someone about late check in due to when our flight would arrive and they said it was no problem, but when we arrived they said they thought we were a no show and didn't have a room for us. It was after midnight and we'd been traveling since 8am local time. We were exhausted and asked for whatever was available. They had one room with an undisclosed maintenance issue. The room was dirty, up about six flights of steep stairs because the lift was broken, with a broken toilet and no hot water. There were holes in the walls, and stains on the floor. The mattress was not only rock hard, but lumpy. All of the furniture had water stains. It also had what looked to be mould around the edges and stains on the sheets. I found a bug on the lamp shade. That's just how tired we were and there was no way we were doing those stairs again until morning. After a rough night's sleep, I fell down the stairs from the bathroom - hard. All in all, a real rough start to a honeymoon let alone a vacation. Very grateful it was only one night. I reached out to them with these issues with no response. Believe the bad reviews - don't go here.

Appalling. Where do I start? The location is beautiful, as is the outside of the building, but once you go inside it soon becomes clear that this hotel is dirty, unkempt and is staffed by incompetent and disinterested staff. The lights and electricity sockets in my room did not work. The shower was too hot. My room was not cleaned during my 5 night stay. I asked several times for milk for my coffee which never arrived. Corridors and staircases smell. Carpets frayed. Bed had BUGS and I was bitten. They took a £50 deposit (for what I don't know) that the hotel still hasn't returned. Don't be fooled by the photos on the hotel booking website.. It is S. H. I. T. E. DO NOT STAY HERE. Score 0 out of 10.

Not sure where to start, this hotel should not be allowed to operate. It used to be beautiful, however new owners have allowed it to fall into disrepair. Our first room was disgraceful and should not have been open for guests. We were then moved rooms which was not much better. In the end we left for the nearest Holiday Inn as couldn’t face staying there. To list just a few of the issues, other than staff losing our room key upon arrival: - Entire hotel is dirty and smells of damp. The images on google with this hotel are false advertisement, the hotel may once have looked like that but could not be further from that now. - Shower does not stay on, we were informed by staff this is due to a broken water pump and has been ongoing for a while. - Hotel staff were letting themselves into hotel rooms as and when they pleased without knocking or asking for permission. - 1st room filthy: bins hadn’t been emptied, wall paper peeling from the wall, dirty furniture, lamp shades stained and hanging off, carpets threadbare and peeling away from skirting boards, tissues stuffed into door spy holes that were open, window panes inside stained. - 1st room broken appliances: bath tap was stained and broken – permanently leaking with a constant flow of water. Cracked, broken and loose bathroom floor tiles that you could easily cut feet on. - 2nd room just as filthy with stained bed base, pigeon nest just outside window that had been left wide open – pigeon droppings on window sill inside room. - 2nd room broken appliances: mattress was broken, when you sat on the bed went straight through it. Broken ironing board led to a cut finger – to which the hotel had no first aid kit/ plasters on site. Unsure if a hotel can legally operate without a first aid kit on site!!?? - Downstairs restaurant and bar was absolutely filthy covered in dust with half open bags of rubbish everywhere. To really top it off, when we complained the housekeeping staff laughed at us, which was really the final straw before we left for another hotel. This is incredibly sad, especially after the last two years’ of this pandemic in which the hospitality industry has suffered. Not to mention the disappointment as to how this building has been treated – a blue plaque building dedicated to Alan Turing, who was born there. Until the new owners invest in repair and suitable upkeep, I would not recommend this hotel. It is scandalous what they charge, this is beyond being anywhere close to value for money.

The location is 5 stars. Also unique is the experience of being in the birthplace of Alan Turing. The hall of the hotel is magnificent. Said that my room was in a desperate need of renovation. The carpet was dirty and smelly. The vintage furniture was in disrepair and a incoherent mix of different styles. The water temperature of the shower was unstable and very difficult to regulate. A vintage air conditioner had broken vents with electric cables popping out on a side. There are better 4 stars hotels than this.

The photographs do not reflect the appalling state of this hotel. At check in my wife and I said we had a room booked. We were asked whether it was one or two rooms. Why? We were about to be shown to room 1 but the reception staff talked amongst themselves, told us that room was booked for someone else (!) and gave us the key to room 8. It was despicable - dark as the curtains were closed, frosted windows with zero light, dirty, peeling wallpaper, stained lampshades, carpet, ceiling. It was so awful we did not want to sleep there. And certainly did not feel welcome by the staff. A week on we are still waiting for the £50 deposit, apparently automatically released on departure. And there has been no response from the management to our emails. We will persist. But DO NOT STAY HERE. It is not an honest hotel, with pictures or people

Utterly appalling. If I could minus marks I would. The reception was rude, slovenly, and ignorant of politeness. The hotel was in a poor state of repair, dirty, wallpaper falling down, furniture stacked in corners with rubbish. The room you can guess - dirty, cold, items not working, uncomfortable, no hot water, a dribble of a shower with dirt in every corner. Breakfast was as cheaply bought and made you want to leave immediately. The coffee was even poor The attitude of all staff, top to bottom was uncaring, not remotely concerned with the complaints (people queued to complain in the morning), I think simply because they knew no one would ever come back. The pictures are false, the price several 100% inflated. Do not go. Close it down. Get the health inspectors in.

Here is a quick laundry list of what was unacceptable: 1.) There was pigeon droppings IN THE BATHROOM of the first room they put me in. 2.) There were large spot of MOLD on the ceiling and wall of the first room. 3.) They moved me to a smaller room (from a queen-sized bed to a twin) and made no effort at a partial refund or a discount of any kind for the downgrade. 4.) The second room was less than 5' wide and the shower did not work beyond a dribble of water. While I would have moved hotels, this one was pre-paid and it was after midnight. I simply wanted to sleep. The twin bed, while small, did allow that. Won't go back there. Also, the staff/manager seemed put out that I had issues with the bathroom that came decorated with bird droppings.

❌❌READ THE REVIEWS BEFORE BOOKING!! ❌❌ This place is a DUMP! From the outside this place looks lovely. Beautiful building, great location… then you step inside. It could be so much more IF the owners took the time and effort to invest money INTO it and not INTO their pockets. Upon arrival they put us in room 8 - where we were greeted by a loud roaring/squeaking AC unit which was full of mold and dust. Walked into the bathroom to find a water leak in the tub, that their repair solution was to just stick a towel under it to collect the water. No one will know right? We asked to switch rooms and they moved us to room 3, right across from the check in desk. It wasn’t the greatest either, but better. We were so exhausted that night we just crashed. When we opened the curtains the next morning I happened to touch the glass in the window, which turned out to be plexiglass. But it’s gets better…. It’s tapped in with masking tape and one slight push and it’s out. Great way to protect your guests and their belongings! Paper peeling everywhere, carpets worn out and stinky. I don’t know how this is listed as a 4 star hotel let alone even in business with the disarray this place is. Do yourself a favor and GO ELSEWHERE.

All other reviews are 100% accurate. This hotel is at best a 3-star. It is a rundown hotel that is severely over priced. The cleaners came into our room without knocking at 9:30am. The room is horrible and very dated. One night stay is fine if you need that location. Do not stay here unless you absolutely have to.

No lift for 4 flights of stairs (not convenient for disability what so ever) 1/3 toilet paper supplied. Broken windows/tiles/bed/plug sockets/wallpaper Missing lamp shades Dirty basin towels with old make up stains Quilt consisted of an old blanket not an actually duvet. Stains on the chair Smell of weed 'Cleaner' entering room during stay while out without actually cleaning (bin still had rubbish so clearly wasnt cleaner) Fire alarm going off at 03.45am! Some of the male staff members were pleasant however. But the room was definitely NOT as pictured!

DO NOT STAY HERE! when we arrived we were given a pokey room, the toilet still had pee in it from god knows who, the toilet roll was empty, the bed was broken in the middle, like it had seen too much action over the years. The base of the bed was mismatch and stuck out a foot one side. We asked to be moved the guy asked if I could show him the bed, and tried to tell me it's where the devan base wasn't pushed together properly. Um I think not mate there is no spring left in that area. He then just walked off, I went looking for him at reception to be told, 30 minutes wait until the next room is ready. The next room was OK, everything is really old and stained. Jumped in the shower to find it didn't work unless your skin can withstand molten lava temperatures. Had to keep turning it on and off just to get some manageable water. It was like faulty towers, none of the staff seemed to give two hoots and spent most of their time on their phones. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone!! The only good thing was the location. Absolutely shocking for a 4 star I would rate this even a 2

As a Google Local Guide, Level 8, first let me say that there seem to be excess fake negative reviews of this place, from people who have ZERO other reviews. "Drive by" reviewers should be discounted to ZERO. My wife and I, from Phoenix, AZ, know all about early 20th Century hotels. LOWER YOUR EXPECTATIONS, and look for the charm. Staff is wonderful, beds are comfy, rooms reflect that bygone era. This is not a 21st Century sterile hotel, but a true charmer. The stairs are part of that, so pace yourselves going up to your room. Get over it.

Avoid this hotel at all costs. If I could give zero stars I would have. The hotel is nothing like the pictures everything was run down, dirty, worn out and broken. The showers had no hot water, when I complained to reception about this the staff were extremely rude and told me there was nothing they would do because they were apparently fully booked. I heard multiple other guests complaining about the same problem. We were finally offered another room and that was exactly the same, no hot water and it was infested with fruit flies because of all the rubbish dumped outside the open window! So after magically finding more available rooms it was third room lucky before we had hot water, there was holes in the walls, wall paper hanging off, broken tiles, broken lights, really too many things wrong to mention. The breakfast was an absolute con, it was a basket of bread you could toast yourself with butter and jam and a plate of cheese and cold meat. Not that the staff explained to you to help yourself at breakfast, they basically ignored all the customers whilst arguing with each other in their own language. When asked what they would do to rectify all the problems we found they basically just shrugged and told me I could speak to the manager, who never actually appeared. Save yourself the stress and hassle by avoidong this complete sh*t show of a "hotel".

    - Location and price was fine. - The upkeep of the hotel was appalling is what I can say. Wallpaper coming off the wall , almost certain they don’t hoover as I found rubbish near my bed. - the underground goes under the building so for light sleepers I wouldn’t recommend staying in on the lower levels. - The staff were nice. - the building needs some maintenance and could potentially be a nice little costly spot to stay in

This is my absolute true honest opinion, BEWARE OF SCAMS. Absolutely despicable, terrible cleanliness and a true nightmare. There is no elevator service for the 2/4 higher floors, the elevator gets stuck, the stairs are extremely unbalanced. Moving luggage upstairs was dreadful. The hotel apparently advertises a ‘no smoking policy’. Upon arrival to the room, the first noticeable smell is the stench of smoke. I’ve requested another room and went to see it. It smelt like marijuana smoke everywhere, the bathroom tiles were shattered on the floor, the bathroom won’t flush and the air conditioning had the smell of mold blowing out. I’ve continued searching for different rooms at 11pm all to have one common theme; the terribly thick smell of smoke, extremely uncomfortable beds, lack of cleanliness, and a general atmosphere of dust. I’ve never had allergies, till I stepped foot in this establishment. Calling this place a 2 star hotel would be incredibly much for them. There were spiders in every room, dirty towels with hairs and smelly pillow covers. I went downstairs to the reception and said because the no smoking policy was not honoured, I’d like my trip to be cut short. They’ve agreed and told me to speak to Expedia, they said they confirm my findings and will give me my refund. I left the hotel and a week later get an email saying the hotel won’t refund anything and that they’ve disagreed. I’m a travelling medical doctor, I was in London for a week. The hotel advertises 4 stars, I can assure it is run by scammers. The location is okay. If you’re used to sleeping in extremely unsanitary and uncomfortable areas, this wouldn’t be a change.

Very attractive building in a lovely part of London. So convenient for the tube. We had a very comfortable visit for 2 nights. Our room was serviced during our stay. The staff were great. Decent buffet breakfast.

The hotel was really beautiful, but it was falling apart. The big lamp flickered when you walked by, and the 2 bedside lamps didn't work at all. The toilet seat was broken and our second night there the heat didn't work but the staff on the desk were all very friendly and professional they all had a smile on their faces which is a big tick for me. The young man was very polite when coming into our room to try and fix the heat and when he couldn't he offered us another room or a small electric heater which we accepted as he had told us the other room wad not up to the high standard of the room we wete in. The hotel was in a great location, a tube station just outside and a short walk to the nearest main street and bus stops. Unfortunately I don't think we would stay there again.

The worst hotel i have ever stayed in, stinks of mildew stale water, wallpaper is falling off, the furniture was broken in some way or another, it wasn’t that clean, their were stains from evidence of a leak on the ceiling, the staff barely spoke to you. I also have photographic evidence to back this review up! The only positive is the walking distance from the hotel to the underground…but ultimately not worth overall, find a closer hotel to where you need to go!

I enjoyed my stay. Service and location was excellent. It's more of a 4.5 rating as long as you have no expectations. Though you can see it's an older Hotel the beauty outweighs the worn out carpet and tiles. It's like visiting your great-grandparents house where you could careless about the peeling paint around the oversized bathtub because after a long day of exploring London it was its best feature. The beds are different from American standards. It was like sleeping on an oversized cushion. I have a bad back, and it was the first time I was able to enjoy sleeping on my side. I did buy a fabric freshener that was an antiseptic disinfectant, only because of previous reviews which I used and felt good about. There is a great restaurant around the corner called The Prince Alfred. Make sure you go there. The food is wonderful! Also, make sure you walk to the canal, and check out the free breakfast served in the tea room. It's simple and delish, and the room looks like you just stepped into Alice in Wonderland. To the staff at the Colonnade, I would love to thank you for making our stay nice with your kindness and attention to cleanliness and detail. It was very much appreciated.

Old building in need of a spruce up outside. Stayed 3 nights, springs in bed coming through mattress. Owner had a party Sunday night went on after midnight, complained of the noise, we were told "it IS the weekend". In Spoke to the manager by phone was offered a free night stay to compensate. Which was refused. Would not stay again. Then was accused of smoking in the room. Photos were sent of cigarette butts and a empty cigarette pack in a bin bag. If that came from our room then the bin in bathroom had not been emptied before our stay! Shocking NEVER AGAIN!

Although rather shabby, this hotel has charm & is located in a wonderful cafe culture area. Also, it is a perfect location for just popping into London. Book early for a great price.

Apart from the location this hotel is shocking in every way! The advertising photo’s I believe must be from 20 years ago! The rooms are dirty, poor decoration, thread bare carpets throughout the hotel, faulty electrics (see photo of bulb hanging out of ceiling with burn marks around the casing which was above the shower) water issues (all taps gave us just luke warm water) apparently only one key available to room, faulty locking mechanism on door. Beds and mattresses on landings. A photograph speaks a thousand words! Check out mine attached! Avoid staying here at all costs! The owners need to spend a lot of money renovating this hotel and making it a safe and comfortable place to stay!! It really is such a shame as the area itself is beautiful. Shame on the owners for letting such a beautiful building go downhill.

Ok, it's not THAT bad people. If you booked this on Expedia before reading the reviews here, let me put you at ease. For <£100/night, if you just need a place to sleep while spending all your time around the city, this place is perfectly fine. If you nit pick, you'll find a lot to complain about, but the room had a great view, kept warm in the winter, clean-enough sheets, and a door that locked. If you have a room on the top floor tho, you will be missing water pressure which was the only thing that happened to us that negatively affected our stay. Luckily our friends were one floor down and had decent pressure. There is a pub and coffee shop right next door (both were great) and it's just north of Little Venice (just a short walk down the canal) which also had some great restaurants. If you're a germaphobe, this ain't it. If you love classic charm and can turn a blind eye to cosmetic defects in favor of a cheap room, this is a decent option.
