Designed by Edwin Lutyens in Portland stone located on an island in the road surrounded by the pomp and boast of government buildings. Austere, somber and contemplative; heralding a generational break from the grandiosity and flamboyant gestures of the past. Massively influential and imprinted in the National subconscious as THE symbol for conveying remembrance, respect and reflection on the War Dead.

It’s a reminder freedom is not free, whether in the UK πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ or US πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ or Europe or anywhere else where liberty is valued. It must be defended against tyranny, autocracy and dictatorships. Many have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Iconic memorial for those that have fought and died in world conflicts for the United Kingdom. Poignant and worth taking five minutes out of your day to respect those that have died in conflicts. Located outside Downing Street on the road towards the Houses of Parliament. Well maintained, even though it sits in the middle of a city street.

Remembering our fallen soldiers and those who died during war is the only way to keep us from repeating the mistakes of the past. There is no winner in a war only sacrifices to preserve our way of life. Lest we forget.

Iconic war memorial set in the middle of Whitehall. Once a year on Remembrance Day, dignitaries lay wreaths here on behalf of British service personnel killed in past wars.

Lovingly cared for since it was unveiled in 1920. A place of remembrance for those that lost their lives in the World Wars and others since. Very moving to even walk past it, it must be amazing to be here on the 11th November

The lovely Cenotaph (the empty Tomb). Built in 1920 for a permanent mark of respect to the fallen of world war 1 and now used for the main focal point of the rememberance parade every year, to honour all of our war dead. Standing at 31 feet tall and taking pride of place in the centre of Whitehall, which is a fitting place as Whitehall was home of the war office right up untill 1964. In itself it's a sad reminder of all those lives that have been taken from us in the nature of war, but also a great tribute to all the brave souls. Lest we not forget - Which is so veΕ•y true ❀

Lest we forget, They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.

Amazing experience visiting the Cenotaph. During Remembrance Week & then on Remembrance Day itself. Sombre & uplifting at the same time. No trouble experienced by me at all, despite some scuffles I saw through the news. Quite respectful in fact.

If you are in London around remembrance Sunday then you better be early as the annual parade takes place. If you wait till 1pm you will have freedom to walk the street and see all the poppy wreaths that have been presented. The area is never as quiet as it is on that day, no traffic just thousands of people walking and talking

We went here for Armistice Day. It was obviously very busy but well handled by the Met who had to deal with national extremists throwing water bottles at them.

A special memorial for those lost to war and conflict who fought for the british forces. Adorned by poppy wreathes every November. Sits in the middle of a relatively busy road near to downing street and the war office. Given 5 stars due to its special significance as a memorial. Free to visit.

Everyone should visit this monument and pay respects to our fallen heroes. This is a very special part of London that every time I visit I always make a point to visit here and reflect and think of those who gave so much and sometimes the ultimate sacrifice. We will never forget πŸ™

Such a moving monument to remind us of the sacrifices many soldiers all over the world have fought in to attempt to make this world a better place.

I visited The Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday 2018, 100th Anniversary of World War One 11-11-18, and I can say it was a very humbling experience. Loved every minute of my visit.

Pray for the fallen heroes! The first time I saw this monument was in Hong Kong, there's one exactly the same in Central. And this is the original Cenotaph in the UK. It's a serene and dignified memorial devoted fully to those who fought for our freedom; despite not being a British, I felt proud and grateful to live in a democratic world which shares what is known as common value. Salute!

Thought I'd got a great spot for the remembrance parade until the coldstream guards stood in front of me!

Attended the ceremony for the passing of 100 years since the end of the First World War. Excellent day out. If you want to attend and get a good spot you need to be there and que up from about 6:30 / 7:00. We managed to get first line against the barrier in line with the Cenotaph, 30 minutes later you could not move as the pavement was 10 people deep. Be warned, dispite public toilets being advertised and extras provided, this is not the case and getting to one will be impossible !!! Its a long day in the cold standing in one spot but a small price to pay for the sacrifice made for us.

I attended a wreath-laying ceremony organised by the Salonika Campaign Society. The monument keeps its power to produce both calm and introspection.

I passed by on a bus and saw the flags mounted on the sides of this tomb to our war dead and wondered why anyone would want to desecrate it by burning these flags. But when i saw the photo of the person and how young he i realised that he was never taught the importance of the cenotaph and could never understand his actions. Had he been taught in school, if he ever went to school, then he would never have been trying to set light to the Union Jack.
