The Wellington Arch, was originally called the Constitution Arch. It is a triumphal arch by Decimus Burton that forms a centrepiece of Hyde Park Corner. Constructed in the early 1800s to commemorate Britain's victories in the Napoleonic Wars, the arch stood in a different location. It originally supported a colossal equestrian statue of the 1st Duke of Wellington by the sculptor Matthew Cotes Wyatt, as a result of which it has acquired the name "the Wellington Arch" in the vernacular. Worth a visit. Around it are a few other sculptures.

Both Wellington and Marble Arch were designed/built to celebrate the victories over France. The other purpose was to create a grand entrance for Buckingham Palace and make London look like a true capital of a global empire. It is named after Duke of Wellington who defeated Napoleon in Waterloo. The 4 horse chariot on top which is hard to see from below is the largest bronze sculpture in Europe and the one that it replaced was even bigger. Ironically the woman on chariot above is called Angel of Peace descending on Quadriga the four horsed chariot of war. Well you would do too after the victory.

A big arch close to Buckingham Palace. Lots of joggers around here. Very tall building that you can go up if you so wish. Can be accessed easily from hyde park corner station which is a stone’s throw from the arch. The barriers are not normally there but are in place in time for the Queen’s funeral.

Stunning piece of historical architecture with an amazing statue on the top. Others have written elsewhere the history of the Wellington Arch, so I have nothing to add in that respect. Came out of the pedestrian tunnel through the roundabout and there it was. Awe inspiring. Another example of the impressive architecture and history of which the nations capital is so rich in.

The Wellington Arch is situated in the heart of London at Hyde Park Corner. Designed by John Nash in the 1820s, the arch originally served as the main entrance to Buckingham Palace. It was erected in front of the palace in 1827. However, with the later addition of the palace's east wing, the arch lost its relevance, standing too close to the new front. It was dismantled and eventually relocated to its current position in the 1880s. Crowned with the largest bronze sculpture in Europe, depicting the Angel of Peace descending on a four-horse chariot (quadriga), it became a triumphal arch commemorating Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo. The quadriga sculpture by Adrian Jones, adorning the arch today, was installed in 1912. From the two balconies atop the arch, one can enjoy views of the royal parks: Green Park to the southeast and Hyde Park to the northwest. Inside, there is a small art gallery. Surrounding the arch are several significant war memorials worth exploring.

Worth a visit for something unique. Good views from the top. Incredible to think of it once as a police station.

Surprisingly this arc is open to the public for a small fee of over £5.90. There’s a small museum detailing the history of the arch and it’s role for the city. There was also a contemporary art exhibit at the time for a single artist guarded by a mean spirited man. The views up top the arch is great, I’m sure it’s much better during sunny days.

This was my first encounter or even hearing of the Wellington arch. Walking by minding my own business and saw there was a sign of going up to have a view. Apparently it’s one of the sites own by English heritage, and included in membership price. There is a lift available to access the top floor, staff where quite helpful and friendly. Fee is reasonable for adults but also concessions for students or elderly/kids. Gift shop at the ground floor but limited options however always good to support. There is a lot of art work and history for anyone to come and see

I must have passed Wellington Arch literally hundreds of times over the years in my life, so it was a joy to finally have the chance to explore it. A chance to learn a little about the history of this building, how it was once a tiny police station, with a very cute cat. And climbing to the top (there is a lift that thankfully takes you most of the way, don't worry), you get a wonderful view of the surrounding area!

Fantastic place just outside Hyde Park. For a small fee you can climb up inside though the informative museum to the viewing gallery. Here you will get great views all round and see the bronze horses up close. The English heritage staff were very helpful. The souvenir shop has some interesting mementos to buy. The view along constitution hill is recommended. Well worth a visit when in this part of London.

We walked through here after visiting Buckingham palace and it was a lovely walk through the park. There was quite a lot of people out running, riding bikes and walking their dogs. It was a nice little spot.

(Translated by Google) Most rewarding and peaceful place to walk. The bow in memory of one of the glorious British heroes of all time is very elegant. Let us remember that Wellington defeated Napoleon at Waterloo, and that elevated him to the altars of his homeland. His remains rest in the Cathedral of San Pablo. First time ever here and it was very enjoyable. I’d recommend that if it’s not raining go to the very top and experience the views on either side of the arch. There’s detailed information on the actual ‘Battle of Waterloo’. When back at the start I’d recommend trying the Sloe Gin and the English Mead which are excellent.

This is situated on a very busy roundabout in central London. It's about a 10 minute walk from Victoria train station. Marble Arch is the closest tube (metro/subway) station. There are only 2 or 3 places to cross and it is very busy so make sure to only cross at those points. It was originally built as the entrance to Buckingham palace but later converted to a monument to commemorate Wellington's victory against Napoleon. (Trafalgar Square marking Nelson's victory is not far away). It's the largest bronze sculpture in Europe and has the Angel of Peace descending on a four-horsed chariot of War (a Quadriga). War and Peace I guess! You can go inside and get some good views of London, particularly St James Park and the palace gardens. Prices (as of October 2023) are adult £7.50, child £4, concessions £6.50 and there are 2 family tickets. English Heritage own the site and full prices can be found on there.

Splendid views from the top and very interesting artefacts and displays within. There is a gift shop and reception at ground level. The higher levels contain information and displays about the monument, an art gallery, a display about its time as London's smallest Police station and very interesting information on the Royal Artillery in World War One The stairs are steep and narrow but there is a lift for those who aren't mobile. We discovered that the Household Cavalry don't parade through the Arch on summer weekends because they are at the beach enjoying themselves! Overall, it is an interesting experience.

I’ve always been to the Arch with no time to go into it, again today as there were masses of tour groups. The Duke of Wellington Arch is an imposing structure befitting the life of the Duke and all he did for England. Learning this history is what the memorial is for. Massively worth a visit along with the other memorials in the gardens.

I haven't visited the small museum within, this large arch is sort of isolated on an island surrounded by busy roads. It certainly is impressive, I understand it was a gateway to Buckingham Palace, but was moved in the 1880s. Worth a look, but wait for green lights before crossing the roads !

Wellington Arch is so cool. I love triumphant arches and this one is a must see as well. Constructed 1826–1830 the arch stood in a nearby location, slightly to the east, directly across from Burton's Ionic screen entrance to Hyde Park; it was moved a short distance to its current site at the top of the Constitution Hill road in 1882–1883.

Beautifully kept English Heritage site. Don't miss the exhibition on the first floor, which gives fascinating insights into the history of Arch, including the reasons why it has to be moved across the Park. The arch once had a statue of the Duke of Wellington on top - a man known to polarise opinions in history and today.

a beautiful place to visit in London. A must visit historical gate that is known as the centrepiece of Hyde Park Corner in central London, between corners of Hyde Park and Green Park. it stands on a large traffic island with crossings for pedestrian access.. it's a nice journey to the most unique conrner of london. Lots of people, so be aware of cyclists around the area as it's popular crossing area to reach to the palace.

I arrived by the no 13 bus and walked through an underground walkway to get to the Wellington Arch as there didn't seem to be many pedestrian crossings. The Wellington Arch was impressive and there were more impressive monuments in the area, all were easy to see as the area is open and free to all, just a bit more walking took me to the top of Constitution Hill, which was closed to all traffic and pedestrians due to the end of operation London Bridge (The death of the Queen).

A pretty much underrated historical object and sight. It was almost completely empty on a Sunday morning (11:00 o'clock) visit. I would recommend to spend here at least 30 minutes but it can take longer if you're planning to enjoy the views from above for longer, because there's access to the balcony from both sides. The exhibition is not large and it's accessible through 4-floors by both stairs or lift. It was fascinating to find out more about the story of this object so I can definitely recommend it, especially in English Heritage members.

(Translated by Google) A GIANT JEWELRY IN THE MIDDLE OF PARKS Also called the Constitution Plug or Green Park Plug, this huge gate is located at the crossroads between Green Park and Hyde Park. The construction of this building, whose architect was Decimus Burton, began in 182 and finished in 1830. In fact, it was in another area soon, but towards the end of the 1800's it moved to its current location. The sculptor of the statue of the 1st Duke of Hellington on it is Matthew Cotes. The bronze horse-drawn carriage sculpture signed by Adrian Jones was made in 1912. I had the opportunity to see this arch, along with many monuments around it. Temmuz 2018
