Free admission. Spent nice couple hours here. Beautiful Victorian paintings, I also enjoyed seeing different interpretations of artists paintings of London. The large scale paintings are also stunning! In the basement there’s the Roman amphitheater, very interesting historical site.

Great art gallery in the heart of London. I came on an empty Monday afternoon and was really nice to stroll around and see the great works on show. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There is a lot to see even in such a small space. Would love to see a better gift shop focused on the gallery and history of London.

I saw the Facebook advertising the Noel Coward exhibition, I thought this would be a great exhibition to attend so clicked on it to find out more. It lead me to a website that told me I had to make a booking which was easy to use. I don't mind having to book as it means a venue wouldn't be too full during this time of pestilence. I found the venue and booking in was easy with the email they sent me. The exhibition had beautiful photos, clothing and information about Noel Coward and I really enjoyed myself. I will attach the photos I took to remember such a wonderful exhibition. I encourage others to attend to enjoy the life and times of Noel Coward. Please click like if you enjoyed my review. Thank you so much.

Nice art gallery not very popular. The place it's very cool inside and outside as well. In the lower level there is a Roman Amphitheater with history details, escalations and all historic info. Upper levels host temporary and permanent paintings exhibition. Absolutely suggested to spend lovely time not surrounded by caos as in the main art galleries and museums in London

Some fantastic paintings and nowhere near as crowded as the National Gallery. However the best part is the Roman Amphitheatre deep below the surface. And - it’s free to visit!

The Guildhall Art Gallery houses the art collection of the City of London, England. It is a stone building in a semi-gothic style intended to be sympathetic to the historic Guildhall, which is adjacent and to which it is connected internally.

It is a great quick visit with an environment of peace (as most sites in London are always packed). This location offers the only view into the Londinium Colliseum remains. Therefore', if you are into the Roman past of UK, this place is a must.

Love this FREE Hidden Gem Gallery In London. A short walk from bank station but totally worth a look. It’s filled it’s huge art pieces dating back to the 14th century. The vibrancy and clear order of the painting can make anyone stare for minutes. My personal favourite for solo trips in London. Great staff and friendly security. To the guy who told me about Henry the 8th I hope you see this review, because you were amazing! Will be returning to take amazing photos in the courtyard and it’s FREE!!

We visited on a Tuesday morning and it was east to prebook the free tickets, and there were few others in the gallery or seeing the Roman Amphitheatre. You can see it in 30-60 minutes depending on how much detail you want to see/read, but it is worth a visit as it has some interesting paintings, a few tidbits on London history, and the (tiny) Amphitheatre ruins. It also was fairly accessible with a lift, had a coat check area, and clean toilets.

A lovely spot! A real hidden gem amongst Londons many many art galleries. Being so close to some of the main attractions it is totally worth coming to and it’s mostly free too. Some fantastic drawings on what london may have been and the environment of the gallery is spacious and welcoming and not at all sterile which is great. Good accessibility and some security checks. If you want to know more about London then visit here. It’s also home to some roman ruins, which in all fairness was really boring, but if you’re a super fan of that kind of archeological then you’re sure to love it.

I loved immensely my recent visit to the Guildhall Gallery. The art gallery is very small, chamber, intimate, but nevertheless very nice and, with love and intelligence, furnished. In the basement, under the building of the Guildhall, Roman London's Amphitheatre for Roman gladiatorial battles was discovered, just think about it, dated 43 AD, date fascinates itself. The amphitheatre was not only excavated and archaeological researched but also an exhibition was organized, right at the site of archaeological excavations and using the original ruins of the amphitheatre. What fascinated me and at the same time surprised me is that, the amphitheatre is located under the building of the Guildhall, built long later, how it was done, perhaps the building was moved during the excavations, and then moved back. The gallery itself, although small, left a lot of positive impressions. I would also like to especially note the store at the gallery in which a vast range of high-quality material assembled and would be useful for gritting occasions.

Visited the Noel Coward exhibtion and it was brill, facilities and the exhibition and information was well worth the 2hrs I spent wandering around, no pressure to hurry up and plenty of space, loved all the exhibits of Noel Cowards life and enjoyed watching the videos and interesting info that was new to me, will definitely book to see again!

A little underwhelming, actually. Apart from a nice John Constable landscape, the small number of other artworks was underwhelming. It's nice for a quick visit if you have a spare 30 minutes. The Roman amphitheatre display looked interesting but was closed for a school visit, so I couldn't look around.

I loved the collection of Victorian art most, but the temporary exhibitions are quite interesting too. Of course, the Roman amphitheater was exciting as well and it is worth visiting the nearby Roman Fort and City Wall. You can read on the collection using Smartify. The painting descriptions were interesting and I really liked the exhibition spaces themselves.

The entry is in the back of the location in google maps. They’ve got the biggest oil painting in the country and the amphitheater is a great excavation site. You’d learn a lot. They have tour guides in the noons. Make sure not to miss it. It’s all free of charge

Another brilliant free activity! The square is easily missed and is a wonderful open sunny spot on good days enjoyed by those having packed lunches! Established in the late 19th century it has a mainly Victorian collection of large paintings alongside some interesting ones showing ordinary people doing everyday things under various themes, with a number of choice Pre-Raphaelite items (be aware some are on loan right now Aug 2023 to Tate Britain eg Rossetti exhibition). Currently there's an interesting look at Wrens work best known for St Paul's with his sketches and a big 3D model showing the structure of the famous iconic dome. Wow. The wide-ranging collection of some 4,500 works- over 1,300 oil paintings, date from 1670 to now with some great choices down the stairs towards the Roman Ampitheatre - yep they found the remains of one in their basement when rebuilding after bombing/fire in WW2: so cool! You can even see preserved wood drainage in parts! Particularly strong in Victorian items, including some Biblical scenes, the collection also houses important ceremonial and topographical paintings. it's open Mon to Sun 10:30am to 4pm (Last entry is at 3:45pm) Free guided tours are run by Guildhall’s team of City Guides, available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 12:15pm and 1:15pm and are 30-45 minutes. No booking is required for individuals but groups must book in advance. Main Guildhall rooms are closed and only open once a month on a Sunday (do check when first!) - plus Open House Festival 6-17 September 2023. An enjoyable hour with shop and several cafes and old pubs nearby.

So surprised with this gem! Free entrance, free tour full of information and anecdotes from a lovely guide (didn't catch her name but she was a secondary school English teacher). Such a highlight to my London trip! The ancient Roman amphitheater under the building is a must-see!

Great small museum with some spectacular pieces... Plus ruins of the Roman-era coliseum in the basement, discovered when the new gallery was built in the 1980s. Close to the Tower of London and other City of London sites and worth allowing 45-60 minutes for a visit. Free except for any special exhibits.

This is a gem of a (working) museum. We were here two days before the Lord Mayor Day celebrations, so got to see some of the preparations for the event. In addition to the many functions held here it actually has a wonderful art gallery, that has a good collection of Pre-Raphaelite artwork, among others. There was also a temporary exhibition about Cole Porter which was good and quite popular. The staff were first rate and very friendly. I have to give a special mention to Errol who really went that extra mile to ensure we had a fantastic visit. He's really passionate about the Guildhall and has a lot of knowledge about the history, and present day workings of the institution. It does close early, and the last entry is 3:00, so get there early to avoid disappointment.

It's an ok gallery with a decent collection of paintings, mainly from the Victorian era. In the undercroft section they have a mixed collection of contemporary paintings along with some rather lovely older ones which show London back in the 17th century, which can be interesting if that's what you're into. In one of them for example you can see the old Blackfriars' Bridge. The Roman amphitheatre is less impressive than so many other Roman ruins elsewhere. It only consists of a bunch of stones in a semi circle so definitely don't expect the Colosseum. Despite its initial dated look, the installation around it it's actually still very effective and nicely thought out. It's nice for a visit, staff is friendly and helpful. There is no bar but the souvenir shop sells bottled water. The souvenir shop is cute with a decent selection of merchandise. I only just wish they had more books about their collection of paintings and the amphitheatre.

A nice hidden gem with warm and friendly staff. Free guided tours are available - I had mine with Andrew, who was informative, professional, and knew the provenance behind the displayed pieces. A perfect place to kill a couple hours by immersing yourself within the wide variety of artwork on display. Bathroom facilities well maintained and clean. A bit small in size for my taste but it is otherwise wonderful.

what a great place. had very kind staff and a unique way of displaying the art (grouped by theme). they have a few guided tours in the day, but also participate on the Smartify app which is great to read more in depth about certain artworks. well worth a visit if you’re in City of London area. since the space includes tour of the Roman amphitheater it sits atop, there are quite a few educational and fun gifts related to Roman history in their gift shop.

This was the first Art gallery I went to in London and I loved every minute of it. It was on a quiet morning so I had time to pore over pieces and explore every nook I had access to. I think I ended up spending about two hours in all. I relish every minute of it. I even got to see the ruin of the Roman amphitheatre and Londonderry. The pieces have rich histories behind them, some are displayed together. The staff are also helpful when asked.

Went here for ‘The Big City’ exhibition which I’d seen advertised. My first time in the art gallery and I was *not* disappointed. Not only did they have the exhibit that I wanted to see which was excellent, they also had a Roman amphitheater underneath. I had no idea that such history was preserved underneath the guildhall. All I can say is that I was very impressed.

Guildhall Art Gallery is a venue representing the history of art and the history of London. It is a fantastic venue to visit and often overlooked. I highly recommend going there. You can view permanent free exhibits and run temporary exhibitions. Until 12th November, you can view the ‘400 Exhibition’ curated and installed by The Worshipful Company of Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers. This is a celebration of the company’s 400-year jubilee. You will see a fantastic selection of craftsmanship of embroiders, artists, designers and jewellers running through history, with works shown for the first time to the public. Ticket price varies from £10 and below. If you wish to book a private tour for a small individual or a larger group, please get in touch.

Guildhall Gallery is The City’s best kept secret! This place is never busy, always free to enter and is a great place to escape from the rest of the city. The exhibits are super interesting, currently they have an exhibit on Christopher Wren and one on “Treasure of Gold and Silver Wire” is opening soon. And of course, you can see Londinium’s colosseum in the basement. Every level and sub-level are accessible by lift. There are two accessible bathrooms and the regular bathroom is huge and clean. There are also free lockers and plenty of benches and air conditioning throughout so it’s great if you have little ones. The staff are friendly, helpful and happy to tell you what’s new. I highly recommend for anyone who loves art, history and London.

I was only there for the London Roman Amphitheatre. The Gallery promises and is a lot for those who are into art and have the time to visit it. It opens at 10 am, it is free, but an appointment helps. And a guided tour in the Amphitheatre is more than recommended.

Definitely my favourite gallery in London so far. It's always quiet and peaceful. The staff is helpful and welcoming, the little shop has lovely postcards and you can find many helpful guides to London historical sites just at the entrance. The gallery is full of stunning art pieces, all worth attention and it has available many little benches to relax and think. Added plus is the Roman Amphitheatre, which is treat to see in person. Just the comparison of what is considered huge for ancient times in comparison to present London is an amazing historical lesson for us all.

Fantastic! I came here just for the Roman Amphitheater but was pleasantly surprised by the art gallery. I loved the art and how it was formatted against a dark blue background, which made it visually appealing. There were enough pieces to keep you entertained without it being overwhelming. As much as I love the V&A, trying to see the full collection can become overwhelming. I'm looking forward to coming back when the rest of the exhibit is installed!

  • 5/5 Colin D. 2 years ago on Google
A very decent gallery. Though the collection is smaller than some in London it is laid out well and great to view at less busy times. The remains of the Roman Amphitheatre are just something else though. Really well displayed and well worth the visit. The rest of the related displays about the history of London and its expansion are well designed as well. Large parts of the building offer disabled access. The place is always kept clean and tidy.

  • 4/5 Thats M. 1 year ago on Google
This is not like a usual art gallery filled room after room with paintings. This art gallery has a different setup in that it also contains an archeological site of a roman amphitheatre which gives an idea of what it must have been like back in the days when it was in use. There are parts of the sewer system, first developed by the Romans. Some of the artefacts displayed includes the jewellery which the spectators lost when attending an event at that venue. The gallery has beautiful stained glass windows. It has a gift shop but there is no cafe or restaurant on the premises which can be a problem, especially if visiting on a weekend as most other cafes in the locality are closed due to it being situated in a commercial district. It is free to attend.

What a lovely Art Gallery with free entry. Catch the short but very interesting introductory tour at 1.15pm (check website for time), which included a few paintings snd the Roman Amphiteatre remains in the basement. We were also fortunate to see an edition of the Magna Carta. We were sad that The Bank of England Museum nearby was closed (tube strike day) as this would have been an interesting combination with the gallery. The viewpoint on the roof of 120 Fenchurch Street (free entry) was really worth visiting after the gallery.
