Went on the Open Day. Worth a visit. With a long history traced back to the 14th century. They also have an interesting audio guide which you can listen and view the works online.

Absolutely stunning place to visit. Our guide was so informative and such a joy to be shown around. It is still lived in today and the museum at the end showing some residents in their homes was so lovely to see

The hour long tour was excellent! You only go through about 5 rooms plus the courtyards, but our guide was excellent in giving its very unique history, people and current use in an engaging and occasionally humourous way - going through its initial inception as a burial ground, to the monastery, demolition then manor house building post-Henry VIII, and later turning it into an almshouse for the poor and school for promising boys (and still used for the elderly). Make sure to prebook especially if the weekend as we saw a few people were turned away at the desk because of space. There is also a small museum and chapel that gave details on the history, key people, way of life, etc. For facilities: there are two single toilets at the front in the reception/gift shop area.

The tour of this place is absolutely fascinating! You MUST do the tour, it is worth every penny and more! I have been visiting London on a regular basis for years and cannot believe I had never heard of this place. The history that has happened here! I would absolutely put Charterhouse on your must see list, not just for the history, but for the good that it continues to do today.

Important site for reformation. Free to view chapel and and museum. Guided tours worth it. See where football rules started. Medival carthusian monks' cells. Loads of later Tudor bits.

Fascinating history of a group of buildings which have been a monastery, mansion, school (famous past pupils include scouts founder Robert Baden-Powell, writer William Thackery and theologian John Wesley) and is still an alms house. Small museum and chapel open to all, need to go on a tour to see other parts of the complex. Two tours a day: 11 and 2.15. We tried to buy tickets before on two different devices with two different people with no success but there were tickets available when we turned up.

My visit to Charterhouse in London was a fascinating experience. The architectural beauty of the building is truly captivating, and the rich history surrounding it adds depth to the tour. While the overall experience was engaging, I wasn't particularly fond of the guide's light-hearted jokes—I prefer more formal tours. Nevertheless, I would recommend it for those who appreciate a mix of history and charm in a guided tour.

Travel back in time, as you tread the aged creaking floorboards, and on worn, irregular flagstones. Built in 1371 on a Black Death burial stone. Absolutely fascinating. The Guided Tours are excellently led and exceedingly well informed. A historic building not to miss.

This historic set of buildings, hidden away in Clerkenwell, is definitely worth a visit. I needed to book a timed tour for the three of us, and our middle- aged guide gave our small group a talk first about the history of the site-- a Carthusian monastery dating from about the 13th century. It's had many changes of ownership since then. Our guide was not exactly a live-wire, but certainly knowledgeable, and we could explore all the major rooms and courtyards. There isn't any cafe, but there are loos and a small giftshop. As I love history, especially the Middle Ages to the Stuart period, I get a thrill here from these beautifully preserved buildings and their stories.

Beautiful historical place, dating back from 1348. It started as a burial site for victims of the Black Death, then as a monastery, a Tudor mansion, an almshouse and a boys’ school. The museum is small but very well displayed and the chapel is well worth a visit.

We had one of the most amazing tour guides, she was funny and could answer all out questions. The tour itself was very interesting. From religious wars to the creation of national football rules. Look for Kayden on the weekends to give tours.

This was such a highlight of our trip to London. The garden in front along with the breathtaking chapel and dedication to this place are absolutely worth the visit. The museum and chapel were all free (you can donate if you desire), and they had guided tours going where you can see the entire layout.

This area of the old city covers is steeped in history with various building covering five centuries. It is private property but there are guided tours available on their website. Tours are given by one of the brothers and they have a very wide knowledge of their subject. I would advise anyone with an interest in history to take a trip. Great value.

Amazing visit, highly recommended. I booked an hour long tour of the Charterhouse which was a great experience. It was lovely to see parts of the Charterhouse that was connected to so much history and so many important people. It was also nice to hear how the Charterhouse is still used today. Our tour guide was great, gave just the right amount of information without being overwhelming. I also visited the chapel and museum which took about half an hour in total. Although small, the museum gave great context into the history of the charter house so highly recommend that too.

We hadn't originally set out to visit the Charterhouse, but we happened to be passing (and noted the free entry) and decided to do a short diversion! The lady working the desk did a fab job with the kids, gave them a Halloween trail to do whilst visiting. When visiting you can go into the Chapel area for a look round and then into the small museum area. Plenty of history here to see and read about - and if we wasn't speeding round trying to find clues for the trail I am sure we might have been here a little longer than we was. Worth a visit if your in the area, and the fact that it's free entry is a bonus!

Please note that the review is for the Charterhouse Museum, not the actually house or tour as there were no more tours scheduled on the day we went - I will provide a separate one on my next visit. I really want to say I like the Museum but in fact, we were in and out in less than 10 minutes; as a museum, this place is very small and has some interesting items but nothing exciting. I wouldn’t venture from other parts of London just for it so just make sure you book a tour and visit the Chapel on your trip here.

Beautiful inspiring nugget in the midst of the capital. Building from 1348 (monastery, school for John Wesley, now almshouse) with chapel, museum and shop free to public. Greeted with news of an interactive archeology type hands on view with enthusiatic friendly people to explain bits dug up on site. Happening every Tuesday for couple of months. Tranquil chapel and number of nice things to buy in the shop. Only snag was the smell of delicious food (only for residents) but plethora of cafes nearby.

I’d highly recommend doing the Tour on the basis that I didn’t and it must be good compared to what I saw. Entry is free to the museum and church. Lovely, except it’s a waste of time. Someone, (please put your hand up and admit responsibility) decided to lay out the museum in reverse chronological order. I’m usually a fan of a contrarian approach and creative thinking but this isn’t really creative. It’s just stupid. History can’t just whimsically be understood in reverse. The narrative is pretty linear in one direction. If we’re to overlook this glaringly, monumentally ridiculous error, the museum still isn’t particularly interesting. It’s small and with pretty meagre descriptive displays. I basically understand the rough outline of the place now but the transitions from one period to another make very little sense. The church is small but nice. You’ll be done within 30 minutes. Do the tour. Maybe the museum was so badly curated to force you to do the tour but in any case just do the tour and don’t waste your time with the museum.

A gem of a place. Truly special. Had a tour by one of the one of the residents of the almshouse and it was wonderful — particularly loved the chapel and dining hall. While it’s not the most exciting place, it is one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had in London.

At the north side of Charterhouse Square you will find this assemblage of buildings that used to be a Priory, school and almshouse, going back to the 14th century, later converted to a 16th century mansion house owned by Thomas Sutton who had made a fortune in Newcastle operating coal mines. He bequeathed money for the chapel, almshouse and a hospital. These funds also started a school that eventually became Charterhouse. The school itself moved to Surrey in 1872 and these building eventually reverted to it's original purpose, an almshouse, housing 40 pensioners. It is partially open to the public with guided tours.
