06/03/2022 Sunday museum seeking in central London and Google maps found me this museum for all things Household Cavalry. I booked online for 3pm (£10.80). It did not mention that I would be asked to leave at 3.50. I had not looked all around. It is interesting to see the horse stables and the working day of a Guard. Tried on the winter coat and plumed helmet, great fun. As I left the 4pm inspection was taking place, dating back to when the guards used to gamble and party in the barracks so they get inspected every day to make sure they are being good.

We didn’t go into the museum but the horse guard changing ceremony at noon was absolutely interesting for tourists. Don’t miss out at 12pm if you are around there! You can also take a photo with the horse guard at the gate! There are many tourist and groups during summer holidays! But everyone is well behaved. Kids love it.

Must see if you are a horse person or interested in cavalry. Lots of information on Waterloo and nice exhibits that help to personify the action. They have a glass wall that allows you to view into a working stable and a fun dress up area where you can try on the various uniforms to get a feel of for the weight of them. It is very well done and a good place to watch the changing of the Horse Guard and still have time to go down and see the last half of the changing of the guard at Buckingham palace. You can get very close to the action at the Household Cavalry and get a good spot without having to wait in the sun for an hour. Watch it for 5 or 10 min the walk down the Mall to Constitution Hill by the Canada Gate and see a great view of the end of the Buckingham Palace Change. This is especially good if you have little kids or just don’t want to stand in the sun in a crowd.

Tis small but packed full of history, my eldest son wanted to learn more about the Lifeguards in particular and my youngest loves seeing the troopers when we're in town. If you're planning a visit to Horseguards to get your pic taken it's definitely worth a visit to the museum to learn more about their history. Viewing the stables and wearing some of the uniforms worn by the Lifeguards and Blues & Royals was clearly a hit with both youngsters and adults attending. * only downside of the visit was watching the high volume of disrespectful tourists taking photos of the troopers for their social media and not even having the courtesy to say "thank you" (come on, it's not difficult) still a fantastic experience all together.

Offers a great opportunity to see the guards who outside of traditional combat operations also serve ceremonial positions in London. Several times a day the gusts change and it’s nice to see their ceremony in public.

One of places that is a must to visit. Although I don’t agree with cavalry sitting on horses for I don’t know how long. This horses are forced to stand outside and one of them looked yesterday very distressed. People are coming to take pictures, some are loud shouting because horse moved when they posed to picture. This animals don’t deserve that stress just for the “look”.

We stumbled on this by accident. Trying to get down to see the changing of the guards, we found the changing of the Horse guards. There was a pretty medium size crowd, it was very easy to get a good spot to view. The horses were beautiful and the whole thing is quite amazing to watch. After we saw this we were still able to get down and catch the Guards marching. Never knew this was there, but I think, its a must. Very cool touch of history.

This is a fairly small museum but worth visiting to learn about the history of the Household Cavalry dating back over 350 years. There are displays of the uniforms and equipment and an area (popular with kids) where you can try on some of the uniforms and breast plate armour. The Household Cavalry performers alot of ceremonial duties protecting Royalty, but interesting to learn about the much broader role played by the Cavalry in keeping the peace in earlier times, and their role in modern era an operations in different theatres of war.

Quieter guard change than Buckingham palace but more fun with the Horses. Top tip watch from junction of The Mall and Horse Guard Parade to see the arrival of new guard then follow to parade ground for change. Remember the whole thing takes half hour.

Horse Guards is a historic building in the City of Westminster, London, between Whitehall and Horse Guards Parade. It was built in the mid-18th century, replacing an earlier building, as a barracks and stables for the Household Cavalry, later becoming an important military headquarters. Horse Guards functions as a gatehouse giving access between Whitehall and St James's Park via gates on the ground floor. It originally formed the entrance to the Palace of Whitehall and later St James's Palace; for that reason it is still ceremonially defended by the Queen's Life Guard. Although still in military use, part of the building houses the Household Cavalry Museum which is open to the public.

The Horse Guards on the street Whitehall, is not far from 10 Downing st which is the home of and office to the prime minister of England. The is no charge to see them and it is the closest that you can get to take your pictures which the Kings guards in the country. It used to be the entrance to Henry VIII Whitehall Palace, which was one of the finest palaces in Europe. Sadly most of this fine Palace was lost in a fire in1698 with only king Henry VIII wine cellar survived and still exists today. They're 2 kings horse guards outside the old entrance to this Palace everyday from 10am to 4pm. These guard do change every hour until 4pm where there is a lovely dismount ceremony, which is very popular and you can get some great pictures for free.

Incredibly lucky to be able to visit off peak. One of the most visited attractions in London. TOURIST TIP: try to lark around way before 4pm to see the parade. If you miss it won’t be able to see much. Unless they do the parade on the yard inside. Fabulous sight and tradition to witness

Timing is key if you want to experience the whole thing. There is a changing of the horse guard in the morning and you need to get that time right, if you want to get the full experience seeing the riders and horses "do their thing". The exhibit of the museum is really well done and thorough but the horse guard changing is really unique to watch (if you haven't seen it before). The rest of the exhibit is well done, to showcase the history, purpose and entire background of the group. Keep in mind the deeply entrenches history of horses and English royalty--especially Queen Elizabeth II.

Amazing volunteers, extremely kind n hospitable. One star because we cut them at one of their most disorganized events. We had the bad luck of coming w seconds of a huge parents n children group. They took the entire space by the uniforms not a single horse stall was left for the several people that were not part of that group. So that we could take our time trying uniforms and photographing while they were going w their demonstration. it could have been a lot more organized. As it was we had to wait for them for an extra long time, in order to find a small space for us even though we were there before the group and strollers took over the entire stool area. It could have been much better organized. To make matters worse the soldiers blocked the window so that we could not see them either (too many people filming/looking at them). So... An unfortunate: I don't care attitude from the workers vs a very kind attitude from the volunteers.

A great place to watch one of London's iconic traditions- free of charge! The change of guards has a long story in British History and it is worth reading about. Be there early to secure a good spot as the activity gathers a big crowd, especially on Fridays. Watch the guards handover to one another at the big arena then quickly move to the front of the building and secure a spot around the corners to see the newly apointed guards take position in their spots (few tourists know of this! most stay at the arena). Leave the arena to accompany the old guards back to Buckingham Palace. If you're lucky and your timing is right, you might be able to watch another ceremony on the way! Just make sure to leave before the guards on horses do as the police will stop you if you try to chase them. Walk along the sides of the park and enjoy the parade!

This is as iconic as you get. Like the old red telephone box, Tower Bridge, the old red Route Master Bus and the Household Cavalry Guards they are all apart of London. Great place to visit and a great spectacle to watch, especially when there is a parade on. The pomp and ceremony for the Queen and country is amazing and these guys always do us proud like they've done for hundreds of years now. I've had nothing but respect for these guys for as long as I can remember 👍

Excellent place to visit. I've been going to London for over 35 years and walked past this museum so many times not realising it is there. A great museum showing the Household Cavalry's roles in British history. My little one loved dressing up and drawing a picture for the queen. You can also see straight into the main stables where the horses and guards prepare for guard duties.

Information overload, exhibitions, all original items from concept to Waterloo to present day, great little stables exhibition where you can see through into stable used now. Small gift shop.

Such a fantastic building just off Whitehall and the other side being Horse Guards Road adjacent to St James Park from which this photo was taken. This museum relates to the history and present day of The Queen’s Mounted Bodyguard. This is an historic Regiment performing a guard change on horses each and every day of the week which is a fine regimental sight and one which attracts lots of tourists usually but now with Covid 19 is not so busy. Fantastic pomp and ceremony which is a marvel to watch and please whenever you visit London maybe in 2021 please get along to see this.

Viewing window onto working stables. Dressing up area so you can experience how heavy the uniforms actually are. Three rooms of Museum displaying the history of the Cavalry and the breeding of it's horses. Including the battle of Waterloo. Great for anyone interested in the military and horses. Has a gift shop. The parade ground has a mahoosive Turkish cannon on the edge built in 1524 by Murad son of Abdullah a chief gunner and taken to Egypt by the British Army in 1801. But it is usually overlooked due to the parades taking place. Beyond the parade ground is St James's Park. In close proximity to St James's Park, Whitehall, Cenotaph, Churchill War Rooms, Institute of Contemporary Arts, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, St Martin's in the Field, The National Gallery, The National Portrait Gallery, Leicester Square, Victoria, Westminster Abbey, Westminster Cathedral, Parliament Square. Nearest station St James's Park.

This museum is not wheelchair friendly and although it is unique it is not worth the entry fee. After pushing the wheelchair across the gravel topped parade ground (which was not a good experience) we were me with a tiny museum shop floored with cobblestones which was extremely uncomfortable for our youngest in her wheelchair. The museum itself was mainly empty and very small, there is a small amount of historical paintings and a handful of catalogued items behind glass, but you'd get more from a book and it would cost the same as the entry fee. I went with high hopes and left very disappointed.

A must visit museum. It is not busy at all so that made it perfect for me. It is an amazing opportunity to learn more about the ruch history of the household cavalry. At one point on the museum you can see into the stables of the actual horses that go on parade. When i was there i saw two horses have a little disagreement and me and my mother found it hilarious. There is an opportunity for kids to try on real uniforms that they wear on parade. It is a must visit place if you want a less busy museum and for kids to learn more.

The best place to see the king's guards too close view in London.

We were here for the changing of the guard, which is a great opportunity to see how horrifically stupid people can be when it comes to following instructions like, “Stand behind the line.”

We had a fabulous private tour with Denys Gaskell, the acting director, who provided a lot of interesting stories and details and set us up for fantastic views of the horse guards.

A nice "hidden" spot amidst the chaos of horse guards in peak summer. Gave a good insight into the household cavalry and a nice look behind the scenes.
