You don't usually think of London being Roman but it was too past years ago. Another great example of something free to do. They claim it says Roman amphitheatre on the sign but obviously it doesn't.. another example of poor London signage. Go to the door that I pictured here and they won't point you in the right direction because again there's no sign. Very cool place to spend short amount of time that not many people know of

Interesting information about Londinium, and how an amphitheatre proves the importance of the location. Although the remains are not much, I recommend it while combining a visit to the art gallery that encloses the amphitheatre. Entrance is via the art gallery, and the amphitheatre is underground, beneath a church.

London's Roman Amphitheatre is an incredible glimpse at what life in Roman London would have been like, able to walk between the remains. Would have loved more information inside! It is free to enter and breathtaking to be so close to the ruins

We are very lucky to have such museums for free in London and this is a great little one based in the middle of the City. I can’t help wondering how such wealth was accumulated to afford this collection… but from a historical perspective it is fascinating as it records the Roman history of London and also includes many other significant art works.

Visited 1st thing in the morning, had the place to ourselves. Gorgeous display of art. The Roman Amphitheatre on the bottom floor is a must see.

Never been here personally but between here and the mithraeum 0.2 miles to the southeast was the geographic center of the city of londonium. Which was the roman city of London which stretched from aldgate to the east, and ludgate to the west. London Wall to the north and the thames River to the south.

Who knew this was here? Free to visit an actual piece of history. Blew me away! Lovely gallery in the Guildhall above too

Located in the basement of the Guildhall gallery. The exposed foundation is both around and beneath you, visible thanks to glass panes. Full scale visuals help to give a more comprehensive idea of the scale and shape of the area during ancient Roman times. Definitely worth a visit to the gallery, it's not everyday you find something like this!

Fascinating part of Roman London hidden below the Guildhall art gallery. Free access but note that the gallery doesn't open until 10:30am

Free entry to the Guildhall Art and Amphitheatre. I booked but I didn't need to. Great environment to view an ancient monument. At street level you can see the outline of the amphitheater shown by the thick black line outside Guildhall.

A hidden gem! It is overwhelming the sense of wonder when you go through the door and see it the amphitheatre. The quietest museum you'll ever go to in London. If you're into portraits, you could spend a good few hours looking through the guildhall gallery before going down. There was quite an interesting part on all the different building plans for London that never actually happened e.g. a monorail.

Only found out about this place this year; a lot less famous than it deserves to be! In the basement of an art museum which wouldn't usually interest me, but the art was actually fairly enjoyable too!

Amazing! Able to get up close and see this historical site. Loved how the using a portion of the Amphitheater the exhibit created in a 360 dimension that helped you envision what it would have been like in roman times.

This place is located inside the Guidhall on the lower ground Please have a look at history in the lower depth of London To be fair, I thought the Guidhall was the main attraction But the exhibition gave you a small insight into what happened on this There signs explain the history & the going on at the old Amphitheatre Which makes it fun to learn

Really cool to see. Definitely worth going if you're in the area and you're heading to the toilets anyway. You can see most of what you need to see from the upstairs toilet entrance!

It's an ok place to visit, although it's literally the perimeter of the ruins. The installation can look a bit dated, but it's still very effective.

Well attended, lots of adults and children on the London Bike ride. RollaPaluza stand was very popular with adults and children alike. And the stunt cycle riders were really good too. This is a nice space for public events.

A "little" gem of history under the streets of modern Londinium. Hic habitat historia! ❤️ Shame that more of it is unexcavated and visible to everyone.

  • 5/5 Romà J. 1 year ago on Google
The entrance is via the Guidhall Art Gallery, and congratulations for the display, with so little remains the space looks wonderful.

Hidden Gem. Using light and glass to create a sense of what the space would’ve looked like this is imaginatively done and atmospheric. Would’ve hosted 7,000+ people of the 40,000 that lived in Londonium. Has preserved wood structure as well as original walls.

An absolute gem of a find. Would never guess it's there. Hidden below the Guildhall and accessed via the art gallery. Both are free to access and have a great atmosphere and ambience. You can almost smell the history and open up your imagination to the historical events that took place there 2000 years ago.

(Translated by Google) Incredibly, three thousand years before us the blood of gladiators poured here and crowds of spectators applauded. The British are all very interesting, and even free of charge at the expense of the Anglican state. Great obscure attraction in London. Not sure that the "wireframe gladiators" fit in. The archaeological findings should be displayed in the the amphitheatre. Harder to find than it needs to, no signs outside or inside the gallery pointing towards the amphitheatre.
