Visited August 2022. What an amazing experience - free to enter (book your tickets online first, no walk ins) and really top shelf venue and curated experience. The site is not large, but it is entirely genuine and the effects are brilliant. Beautiful touch with the archeological finds from the site on show before you enter the main exhibit. The main event is timed and controlled, and well run. Well worth 30 minutes to see and experience a piece of London's ancient history!

I didn't expect much. I thought it would be a hole in the ground with stones and such and it was.. and much more! The presentation is impeccable. My wife is a senior architect that worked on the houses of Parliament (yes, I say that when ever I can) and she was impressed as well. They create walls and pillars just with mist and shadows and the lighting is excellent. It was more informative than I expected as well. There is a wall of artifacts and plenty to read. Even if I e wasn't particularly interested in it, they would be glad they saw it.. and it's free, which is rare where I come from. The photos don't do the room justice because I did it in night setting to absorb everything.

I give this 5 stars as it's very interesting and free. But you must book online ahead of your visit. You cannot just turn up. The Mithraeum is a temple to the god Mithras dating from the time when the Romans were in Britain. Where it's located now is not it's original location it was moved there when the Bloomberg building underneath which it sits was built. There is a small exhibition space at ground level and then you take a lift down into the bowels of the building in order to visit the temple. I thought that it was very well presented and the guides at the location are very informative and helpful.

A lovely little museum that preserved a unique piece of history. There also several interesting Rome artifacts that were found that are definitely worthy of a look. Make sure to book online as you may have to wait otherwise if there are too many people (or in my case school children) inside. The access is free and you'll also get to enjoy a unique moder installation that is changed every few months to compliment the mithraeum piece.

How they have displayed the ruin is fantastic. Firstly, in there ticket hall, there is a wall of all of the items discovered during excavation, which is well worth a viewing. The ruin itself, starts with an ‘experience’ as they call it, where they spray a fine mist into the room and then use targeted lighting to create an illusion of what the ruin would look like with columns, sounds effects etc. This part was brilliant, never seen anything like it before. They then turn on all the lights so you can have a proper look and take photos (No flash or videos though) Highly recommend and to top it off, it’s all free!

Not big, but packed full of 2,000 year artefacts, an immersive experience and iPads full of detailed info. Free, but tickets required that you book on line in advance. We spent about 45-minutes here.

A wonderful hidden gem in London. The immersive experience was visually stunning. The exhibit itself is informative and the staff were very helpful and willing to give us an introduction to the exhibit. The visit is free but booking is recommended via their website.

A really interesting small museum in the heart of London, literally adjacent to an exit to Bank tube station and only a short walk from the main exits and Cannon Street too. The museum itself isn't huge, with a small display of all the many artefacts found on site. There were captions for a few giving some insight and of the ones labeled they were all very interesting - however that was 9 out of probably 60 or so. There were tablets next to this which may have had more detail but I didn't see anyone using them so I wasn't sure. You then descend downstairs into a waiting room with a couple of small things to look at. There are some projections on the wall and, even when a little busy, the place has seating and a nice atmosphere. You can view the temple once every 20 minutes - there is a short show in which they play a variety of sounds and use light to make you feel as though you are back in ancient Roman times, before the lights turn on and you can see the temple in full. It is very small, but you can still see the bases of the columns, the shape of the apses, the very well-preserved brickwork at the far end, and where some of the artefacts may have been found. You get another 15 minutes or so to look around - plenty of time as it is very small, before you are ushered back to the waiting room and can look more around the rest. The 20 minute slots help keep it quite empty inside the temple, and as it isn't a busy place the rest is quite spacious too. All in all, it's a very interesting little place - allow 45 minutes to an hour to see it all and use the nice loos - down some winding corridors but nice and very clean. I wouldn't travel to this area of London just to see this from afar - if you go then have a look at other things in the area too to make it worth it.

An excellent and fascinating place to visit. Something that's also great about visiting is that it's free! I had been wanting to visit for quite some time and I wasn't disappointed. The remains of the temple are displayed in a great way with the use of lighting and sound. The incredible Roman artifacts found an the site are displayed clearly close to the entrance. I had read previously that it was recommended to book your free ticket online however, me and my partner were able to get tickets at the entrance on a Saturday afternoon with no problem. Staff on site are very friendly and helpful. The toilets are very well looked after. I will be returning to visit with my family in the near future.

I'm gonna be honest, this wasn't very exciting. Thankfully it was free. You walk in, there's a couple tvs on your right playing videos of some sort, I didn't hear sound but maybe I ignored it, then there is a wall of artifacts, and from there you proceed down stairs. The bottom landing is a waiting area that plays a shirt video, and then the staff open the "immersian" experience. All that is, js a replica of the ruins, they turn the lights off and gradually turn them back on as there is chanting in Latin and a bit of fog. Maybr 5-7mins. I would have actually been mad if this had charged an entrance fee. Instead I'm just out my time and tube fare. If you're in the area go but don't go out of your way. On a good note, I did google the religion/cult for more info so I am a smidgen more educated.

Some pretty interesting artifacts on display, and good explanations of what little is known about the site. The folks working there were enthusiastic and friendly. The "temple" itself is interesting to see, and they did some neat audio tricks to make it sound like you were surrounded by worshippers. They used special lighting and fog generators to produce a ghostly outline of the missing columns and such. Might have been neat if they had displayed some shadow people as well, but I didn't see any.

My friend and I had a lovely warm welcome here. It's nice to see such friendly staff... This attraction has finally righted an injustice done to one of London's most important Roman structures, The Temple of Mithras. For years, it sat in a sorry state on a concrete platform with a few information boards and not much else. Recently, the site was redeveloped, and there was a chance to take another look at the area where the Temple was originally built. The new attraction was built into the redevelopment plan, and the Temple reinstated into nearly its original place. What we can see is a small aisled building, possibly with lean-to roofing on the aisles, a central nave, and an apsidal end where the altar area was. The presentation of the ruins is now moodily lit, although there is a severe lack of information boards to tell you what exactly it is you're looking at. Also, there is an audio show that lasts about 10 minutes. Now my friend who was with me pointed out that this would have been better if actual figures of people were projected into the ruins to give better clarity visually to what we were listening to. Still, a minor grumble... it's still a great FREE attraction if you don't mind the prebooked timeslot and can work around it.

Underneath Bloomberg’s new European headquarters in London there are the remains of a 1700 yr old Roman Temple. The site is 7 metres (23 ft) below the modern street level and they let you go see it! There’s a bit of a 5 minute light and sound show which is a bit random. It’s quite interesting and worth a visit if you like history. Entry is free but you need a ticket. It’s a bit disappointing to hear it’s not on its original site and has been moved and reconstructed.

Great if you just want a quick visit, and interesting subject that archaeologists know relatively little about. Probably not suitable for young children. Took about 20 minutes for the whole experience but Great you can see Roman remains in Central London for free.

This is underground at the level of Roman London. There is an immersive experience to give you atmosphere as well. Well worth a visit and it is free but do book your tickets online.

Well worth a visit. Refreshingly short as it is a very small museum, but fascinating and unique. Nice mix of permanent displays (Roman temple) and temporary exhibitions. Number one tip would be to aim to see the light show at the temple (three times per hour: 20 past, 20 to, and on the hour).

Free museum, small but interesting, they have little packs for kids to do. Samsung pads are in the first hall so you can research all the pieces found at that site which date back to 46AD which is super cool. Staff are great, gave lots of information and were nice.

  • 4/5 James A. 9 months ago on Google
Very interesting visit at no charge. They do a smoke and light show, and I'd much prefer to simply see the ruins in full light. But its still amazing to see a 2000 year old temple under the streets of London.

Free museum with roman temple ruins. Interesting display of artifacts found at excavation site and innovative light effect presentation of the ruins 2 floors below. A wonderful surprise. It was somewhat tricky to find but really worth it. The presentation takes about 6 minutes and there are not many people so you have the place to yourself. Photos do not do justice to the place. Must see in person.

I thought is was only the temple remains to see here, was surprised!! There was an art exhibition in the first room, then a display with some pots and other archaeological finds. There were two other floors, one with some info and light displays as well as head statues, then you wait, for every twenty minutes you can go down and see the temple, where there was a little presentation with lights and sounds.

Awesome to not only have preserved but to open it to the public at no cost. The big suggestion would be to use the “virtual experience” to further educate the outline of the building entrance and alter, describe the years built, how and where people would have sat, rather than exclusively listen to Latin chanting. Regardless, very interesting to view.

The London Mithraeum Bloomberg SPACE is a wonderful recreation of the Temple of Mithras that is located on the actual site. The exhibit creates a cool experience with great lighting, fog and sound effects, making it a truly atmospheric environment. Admission is free, and it is accessible to everyone. However, you need to book in advance online.

Honestly, I think this is a 4.5 star museum rather than a 5...but that has nothing to do with the museum itself. It's the Roman temple that is a little underwhelming. Then again, it's free to visit so I don't think there's any room to complain. I did enjoy learning about the associated Cult of Mithra, but it was a very mysterious group so there isn't a lot of information available to review. What is available, however, is well presented. I also thought it was fascinating that when workers were uncovering the site they weren't able to determine its actual purpose until the last day of the dig...again highlighting how discreate the cult activities actually were. Additionally, I enjoyed the descent down the stairs as the walls highlighted important parts of history in relation to the time it took to cover the temple up with soil. Overall, we liked it and I encourage people to go - especially if they enjoy Roman history and because it is totally free.

I highly recommend this place to Londoners and tourists! It's a bit hidden but worth the visit. Book your tickets and off you go. Tickets are usually available on the same day but better plan this in advance. Amazing sound and light show. Last time I had a private show at 5.30pm 😉 come earlier to read about the temple before the show. They will remind you, bit videos are not allowed, only pics.

I was really looking forward to coming here. However the main show, for me was actually boring. Just some speakers of men talking (incomprehensible if you don't speak Latin) and some lights which illuminate and go out, nothing about the bit being lit or anything. The interactivity is good upstairs on the exhibit wall. The video it shows however form the television again was very poor quality and very pitchy, I don't think it was working well. Nice that the company have preserved this place as its great to keep. Wouldn't return.

We found this to be fascinating. If you are in the area, it’s worth a 20 to 30 minute stop. They do require you to register online for a ticket; but even though all the time slots were booked when we showed up, they let us in. They have created an audio experience with the view of the Underground Roman temple.

A 20th century Roman temple built so cults could worship Mithras. A cult/religion met in secret underground temples. Cults were men only and you needed to be initiated. Very interesting. And the toilets were fancy

Wonderful experience! The immersion presentation was extraordinary - a play of darkness, light and sound - it really is easy to imagine an attendance at the Mithrean cult and Mithras' temple. Recommend!

An interesting detour if you're working in or visiting the city of London. The museum. is small with an introductory display and a rotating modern exhibition. The lower floor has an interactive set of panels and the main event is down a further flight of stairs. You enter a dark space containing the remains of the roman temple dedicated to the Roman god Mithras. There is a very good sound and audio introduction accompanying the ruins' slow visual unveiling. Well worth a visit but bear in mind it is small so can be completed in less than an hour.

Found this spot on an online list of the best free London attractions. It lived up to the hype - especially on a super hot day like today, being able to walk into an air conditioned space, and go down to an even cooler basement temple, all while being able to learn a thing or two was great. - can't say enough good things, really.

  • 4/5 Karen B. 1 year ago on Google
Interesting remains of a Roman temple were discovered when the office building above was being built. It is a bit inconvenient as you have to have free timed tickets for an audio element of the temple, so you aren't free to look at your leisure. It is very convenient for Bank station - if you find the right exit.

  • 5/5 Martin R. 1 year ago on Google
This is a tucked away free gem in London with a short guided tour underground although there is an interesting narrated pre-show. The building is new and is impressive inside. The tour provides a semi atmospheric recreation of the old Roman temple that existed several meters below the existing street level. Reservations not required but suggested. Worth a visit!

Its Free to enter here but you can book free tickets on line This place is located a minute away from Bank Station Bloomberg Building Has two exhibitions in this location. This place has a house two exhibitions the staff ask you if you require an introduction it's worth listening to plus it's free you are aloud to take photos in the building i would advise not to Touch an of the exhibition upstairs The main exhibition is located down a flight of stairs, which is a dark room with a few objects that light up the darken room You can inactive with the exhibition here The main exhibition lasts for 20 minutes but you can leave at any time if you get bored This place is worth a look but not to pay for but depends on the person you

A good time to have visited with how bad the rain was! Easy to book online and a few people in without it being too busy. Staff were very friendly. A different museum to visit and nice bit of interactivity to find out more at your own pace, from the original location and how the temple was lost and found

Definelty worth visiting, some interesting information and for free. Only thing is that they don't have a proper description of the temple itself, everything but.

Brilliant little hidden gem, bet most of the "City" workers who scurried past it every day don't even know it exists, very informative and worth a visit (even better it's free, and you don't get much of that in London)

  • 4/5 Michael B. 2 years ago on Google
More of a pit stop than a day out, but it's free and an interesting diversion if you're in the area. It's in the basement of a modern office building very close to Bank tube station.

Hidden Roman history gem under the streets of The City of London! Excellent visitor experience with atmospheric lighting and sounds. Worth a visit, will take you about 30 to 45 min.

  • 5/5 Amanda R. 2 years ago on Google
Amazing. Simply amazing. Rather spiritual and a very peaceful place. Excellent for inner reflection. At least that is what I found. Also fantastic for history buffs, the Mitharium is quite simply fascinating. Definitely worth a visit

Fab immersive experience bringing to life the Roman temple of Mithraeum. The light and sound show is short but impressive. It runs every 20 mins on the hour.

  • 4/5 Kate A. 2 years ago on Google
Interesting place, very nice toilets! Shame the video is on a continuous loop rather than starting on request, as it's very interesting but hard to pick up mid way through. The actual experience is a little underwhelming. The staff are absolutely lovely and the cleaner is the hardest working man, he keeps everything spotless.

  • 4/5 Mike S. 2 years ago on Google
Impressive exhibition, comprising a wall of artifacts in the entrance hall, the details on London of the time of the temple and the temple itself on the -1 level and the reconstruction of the temple itself. The information provided is well curated and presented and all staff were friendly, professional and welcoming. I'd have given 5 stars except for the fact that the short "show" in the temple didn't recreate for me well enough the ceremony or the purpose of the temple. Despite this I fully recommend a visit, allow 45-60 mins.

  • 5/5 Laura L. 2 years ago on Google

Stumbling upon this place on Google Maps was an unexpected delight. Although I hadn't planned to visit, I highly recommend taking the time to drop by. The interactive experience offered here exceeded my expectations, especially considering that no payment is required. It's a wonderful opportunity to engage and enjoy without any financial obligations. Don't miss out on this pleasant surprise!

A really interesting but brief thing to do! Free tickets which is always great. It does say it takes around 45 minutes to go round everything (includes upstairs and tour) but I think we were done in about 20-25 minutes, and we were taking our time. Definitely worth doing if you have a bit of time to kill in the city.

  • 5/5 Daniel S. 11 months ago on Google
What an interesting find. Well worth visiting and free to enter but book tickets online before going as don’t think they do walk-in’s. Very well preserved ruin of a Roman temple. Very friendly staff who were very knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions.

We went to this site when it opened in 2017 but hadn't been back until now. It is just as amazing on a re-visit! Wonderful display of objects at ground level (with as much or little information as you choose to access). Also at ground level there is a fantastic contemporary commission responding to the site. Downstairs is the site itself including a short "immersive" video experience and plenty of time to wander around on your own. Really helpful staff and even the toilets are great! Plus it's all free. Highly recommended.
