A modern war memorial which stands in strong contrast with the more traditional memorials in the nearby area. Numerous black metal crosses emerge from the earth. At eye level, the crosses remind me of metal 'hedgehogs' used in defensive warfare. As you walk among them - and you really do walk among them as some stick out from the path - you see that the tops of them resemble crosses, or the Southern Cross constellation so familiar to Kiwis. A moving, albeit different kind of war memorial which makes me proud of those who served New Zealand.

The New Zealand Memorial is one of several commemorative monuments found at the southeast corner of Hyde Park. This is an interesting monument dedicated to New Zealanders who lost their lives as part of the commonwealth forces during WWI and WWII conflicts. Designed by John Hardwick-Smith and sculpted by Paul Dibble in 2006, the monument features 16 cross-shaped bronze standards, protruding from the ground in formation. It is a thought provoking image and leaves an impression of the sacrifice made during the wars. The New Zealand Memorial is one of several nice monuments to see in this area of Hyde Park. Others include include the the Wellington Arch, Duke of Wellington Statue, Royal Artillery Memorial, Machine Gun Corp Memorial, Australia Memorial and across the street in Green Park, you can see the Bomber Command Memorial.

This memorial was opened at Hyde Park Corner, London, on 11 November 2006 to commemorate the relationship of New Zealand and the United Kingdom. It featured representations of New Zealand flora and fauna, including the fern. Six of the bronze standards were arranged in the shape of the Southern Cross constellation and its two 'pointer' stars. At night the tops of the standards are illuminated to resemble the stars pointing southwards. The Southern Cross, the dominant symbol on the New Zealand flag, was also used on the tomb of the unknown warrior, which was opened in 2004 at the national war memorial in Wellington.

Stark, somber & connected with the earth. Like a group of Cabbage Trees standing on a back country farmers ridge. A minimalist but effective memorial to the many Kiwis who never returned after travelling around the world to fight to protect the 'mother country".

A resolute memorial at the busy Wellington roundabout. There are details of historical trivia forged on the metalwork. There are a cluster of other war memorials within a five minute walk.

This is a memorial to the war dead of New Zealand both World Wars WW1 and WWII The official name is "Southern Stand" and erected in 2006. Designed by architect John Hardwick-Smith & sculptor Paul Dibble, who are both from New Zealand. There are 16 bronzes in all and each one has either some text or symbols or something relevant to this memorial. There were some derogatory comments about the design of this memorial. I really think it has lovely shape and form and has an artistic "form" which changes whether it be sunny, cloudy or whatever the weather. Sometimes to be over critical of such a subject when there is such meaning and depth behind the memorial of people who lost their lives in warfare and this has been put there as a constant reminder to us all to remember "the fallen" Go there admire it and please remember all the young lives, cut so short which this memorial represents.

An interesting and unusual War Memorial to the brave Armed Forces of New Zealand who fought alongside their fellow Allies for the freedom we enjoy today. The black column are reminiscent of barbed wire holders or tank traps located in No Man's Land and are engraved with symbols of New Zealand and the Armed Forces. Definitely a place to visit to give thanks for their sacrifice. "Lest We Forget".

I like the idea and the reduced interpretation of tombstones. Hold still for a moment and remember those who passed. Reflect and learn from history - for a better future. Best regards Mina Art

I really love this memorial, from the distance or walking among the standards. Each standard is formed from two intersecting plates of bronze and, when seen from above and afar, the sculptures appear like a series of crosses hanging in the air.

The New Zealand War Memorial stands as a poignant and powerful tribute to honour the sacrifice and bravery of New Zealand soldiers. My visit to this memorial left a deep and lasting impression. The memorial's design is both elegant and striking, offering a solemn and respectful space for reflection. The meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail in its construction pay homage to the courage and resilience of those who served. The serene setting provides a tranquil atmosphere for remembrance and contemplation. The careful landscaping and thoughtful layout of the memorial evoke a sense of reverence and gratitude. What made it truly impactful is its ability to convey a profound sense of gratitude and respect for the fallen soldiers. The inscriptions and symbols on the memorial's walls serve as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made for freedom and peace. Moreover, the location at Hyde Park Corner, a site dedicated to honouring the contributions of various nations during times of conflict, adds to the memorial's significance and historical context.

Not universally liked, designed by New Zealanders to be a memorial to all the persons from New Zealand who died in WW I & II. At least it is situated in a very obvious location especially for pedestrians and not too close to the Aussies!
