My favourite London art gallery of modern and contemporary art from around the world, and it is free entrance (donations welcomed) with the exception of rotating special exhibitions. The gallery is in a converted power-station and hence really spacious and designed to really show off the impressive modern art collections. It is rarely too crowded that you can’t appreciate the art (so often abroad I find the galleries too busy). Highly recommend a couple of hours and come back another day and see some more. Always a lot of surrealist art on display (Dali, Magritte). Famous works by Mondrian, Pollock, Picasso, Matisse, Warhol. My favourites are Richter (whole section of his paintings see photos). Nearly always a good quality photography exhibition in the main free galleries to enjoy. Access is good for disabilities with lifts and plenty of wide-spaces. Plenty of sofas to sit down in the downstairs main entrance. Nice gift shop (see photos). Toilets plentiful. There is also a café but not eaten in there for a few years but always seems popular.

I always love stopping here. Sometimes the art is a bit odd....well, modern, but I always enjoy having a coffee on the top floor and taking in the view. Great place for a quick visit, and many of the exhibitions are free of charge.

This was my first time attending an art gallery. Originally going here for a uni assignment, I ended up forgetting all about it and was instead immersed in the art that surrounded me There were a lot of displays that showcased artistic expression and social and cultural perceptions; having read some of the notes behind the pieces, I found it to be quite insightful and enticing I would love to go to another exhibition in the near future

What it is doesn't need suggestions. The building refurb alone is worth a visit to view. It's an amazing building. Definitely know which exhibition you re going in advance. It is quite busy and crowded and you ll tire down quite quickly if you don't. No need to queue up for tickets, you can get them online. Best to do it in advance so you confirm time slot availability

Got a membership for Xmas so thought I’d nip and try out a free exhibition first to get a feel for the place!! What a bloody great day out!! A lovely way to spend an afternoon… so much to see and read about… I felt very cultured!!! I’ll be back time and again no doubt!!

An absolutely wonderful community site in the heart of London. You can stop in for 10 minutes or spend 10 hours being entertained; you can spend pennies, entrance is free but donations always welcomed, or spend 10s of ££s. There is an extensive gift shop- mostly books and famous prints, and refreshments. Or just lounge about in quiet spaces close to well appointed public toilets.

Free entry to most galleries. Convenient location near millennium bridge and st Paul's and borough market close. We had a nice wander around. There are floating jellyfish which are impressive. Galleries have good spacing and decent descriptions beside art. Worth a visit if in the area.

Most of the exhibits weren't anything impressive at all (see photos). The odd few were cool but the majority were not - maybe modern art just isn't for me. Very busy on a Saturday, incredibly difficult to get tickets to the special exhibition even if you're a member - the queue is like 30,000 people online and wait for hours. The member only bars were pretty much full too.

What a wonderful experience. We were here when the surrealist expedition was on. It was really stunning to see painting I've only seen in books, in real life. It's a big open museum. It has a free entry but some exhibits require paid tickets. Membership is available if you are a regular. Loved this place and the kids got sketch books to keep them engaged. Huge gift shops, well worth a visit

The museum itself is a masterpiece of architecture, captivating me even more than the art pieces housed within. The design is cool, making it a standout in its own right. One highlight was the breathtaking view of St Paul's Cathedral from the upper levels of the museum. I highly recommend taking the time to explore the entire building, it's an experience that goes beyond the art collection, adding an extra layer of appreciation for the thoughtful design and layout.

A beautiful museum! The collection is nice, but a but limited. I went like 2 hours before closing and it wasn't crowded. The shop closes at the same time as the museum, so if you want to get souvenirs, make sure you go with plenty of time. What I loved about the museums is that they explain art concepts. I really recommend paying a visit.

I was there today it is really nice and free to get in. But you can choose to make a 5 pounds donation if you like. It also has wheelchair access and a shop you can buy souvenirs. Plus an amazing art gallery and friendly security guards and staff. Plus it is really big. It is also a good place to take the kids or to look around if you are into art or just want to explore. The Building is really beautiful and has an upstairs too. It is also next to the river with boat rides and boats going past outside plus there is loads of places to eat in this area and and bars near by and coffee shops.

It’s a big and nice museum and for me was very new as a modern museum! It take around 4 hours ic you want to see whole galleries and museum and most of them are free of charge , there is a nice shop there which is selling books, posters, mugs, shirts, bag etc, In most of the floor of museum restrooms are available and you can put your extras at lockers of ground floor free of charge( don’t forget to take a one pound coin to use it as a deposit of locker)

Tate Modern is indubitably a must see for every visitor of London. You can come back many times – the access is free of charge, although donations are welcome. This will allow you to find your own pace and itinerary through the labyrinth of exhibitions some of which will make you question your understanding of what art is. The place itself is an architectural masterpiece.

The building is beautiful. The spaces in the room feel open and spacious. The curators have connected pieces in interesting ways to tell you about the history, or message being conveyed. I'm an armature painter and so love how I can get so close to the paintings to see how it was constructed. Very inspirational. Love this place.

This is one of the best art museums that are with free admission. The location is by the Thames River. I can oversee the river. It's beautiful especially in the sunset. Through multiple senses beyond visual, it connects visitors and the art. All exhibitions carry out a strong voice and its own stand. It's an unique experience.

Free to enter, also for tourists. The museum is in an old power building, which makes it a cool architecture. There also is a café at the top, with a great view. The art itself is, of course, great as well, with some really interesting pieces. Some parts of the museum require a ticket, but there are a lot of things to see and experience for free. Stop by if you are into modern art or in general new experiences!

Relaxing morning out. Great exhibition. Home of modern art. Can leave bags and coats in the cloakroom. Cafe available for refreshments. Give around two to three hours to get around the entire place. Plenty of helpful staff around to answer questions. One of the places in London for a free visit, there are paid exhibitions on certain floors where tickets can be purchased.

Tate Modern was on my husband go-to list and he told me the status & importance of it is similar to MoMA in New York City. We prefer MoMA much more, but we would still recommend Tate Modern Museum. It was renovated from an old printing factory and the decor is huge & cozy. The best part of its design in our opinions is the amazing fusion of modern furniture with historical building. The exhibition was limited and some floors were closed due to the pandemic, but it still took us half day to enjoy the art. The river scene by their cafe is one of their signature points for visitors and it's worth to detour.

This must definitely be one of the best galleries in London for modern art. The interesting space of the gallery allows for the presentation of unique exhibitions. It is incredible that the entrance to the gallery is for free. Only, the special exhibitions require advance booking and / or the purchase of tickets. The Tate Modern is easily accessible by public transport . It is one of the must see attractions in London.

Modern art museum set over multiple floors. A few 'traditional' oil paintings but the rest is other forms of art - anything and everything. Some amazing pieces but a few that were just tacky trash. Allow at least 2 hours for a good wonder. Toilets and cafe on site. Good for families with older kids, nothing much for younger kids (under 8)

Some exceptional modern art, with a lot of them incomprehensible and too abstract. A few were really nice in my humble opinion. There was some rooms with graphic content, so keep your eyes open to avoid those, especially if you are with children!

To be honest, I don’t understand or enjoy modern art as much as I enjoy classical art. However, the Tate’s collection is diverse enough to contain some pieces that I liked, and I’m sure everyone else will discover something to their taste as well. I particularly enjoyed the Tower of Babel and Leon Ferrari exhibits in the Media Network collection, as well as the hall on optics, and the pieces by Dali and Picasso. And Anica Yi’s jellyfish/machine/aliens display is wonderfully weird.

Absolutely love the Tate Modern; it was my first time there in a few years and I was surprised to see how much it had expanded - I needed far more time than I'd allowed myself. Tonnes to see, and the feature exhibition in the hall are these jellyfish style things that float and move around; I could have watched for hours. Cafe was great with lots of gluten free and vegan choices; sandwiches were all sold out shortly after midday so if you did want one best to get there early!

It was pretty busy when we went on a Saturday, 5pm, however this did not take away the beauty of the sculptures and art work. The atmosphere was wonderful and it was very well put together and organized. There is also a cafe, restaurant and a few restrooms around the galleries. Best of all, it's completely free! Apart from the temporary exhibitions, which for the low price usually given, are equally as important.

Amazing gallery with a massive entrance hall. There’s usually a free exhibit on in the hall, booking essential at the moment because of covid. You can visit quite a few other galleries on upper levels that are also free. Some you have to pay, or be a member. A great place to while away a couple of hours.

It is a really stunning place, full of modern artistic exhibitions, it reminded me my visit to the Whitney Museum in New York. I would visit it for multiple times. It is also family friendly, lots of fun activities for kids to do, and the kids had much fun too. The view from the canteen is beautiful as well.

Along South Bank, Tate Modern is a well worth stop as it has a number of free exhibits to view and appreciate if you have some time to kill. Really grand and breathtaking building. London has tons of museums and many of them are free. The Tate Modern was by far our favorite museum when we visited here. It’s a quick ride via Metro. It’s kid friendly and they offer so many activities for children and adults too. There are exhibits that you need tickets for but there’s also 4 floors of free and wonderful curated art work. We also had lunch here which was quick yet delicious. The gift shop and their art section where you create your own art and hang it up was very special and speaks to the core of what the museum is about, we could have spent an entire day if we wanted. It’s also a walk away for Millennial Bridge.

Good place to hangout and the art gallery has a lot to see! You’d think that some of the art is quite silly but that’s what gets you thinking into what it could be. The place is huge but lifts can get very busy during peak times. The view from the 10th floor is breathtaking overlooking St. Paul’s and Shard.

The free exhibitions are a bit disappointing but each floor there are still a few free exhibitions are not too bad. There are too many exhibitions you need to book tickets in advance or pay extra, but they seem more worthy. The bookshops and gift shops are quite nice but nothing catches my eye so I didn’t buy anything.

My husband and I have visited Tate Modern twice, each time for about two hours. Overall, we both really enjoy it. They seem to change out the primary exhibit in the main hall pretty regularly and both we've seen have been interesting. The art also seems to change some throughout, while other pieces remain and are fun to see multiple times. The space is well organized and items are well presented. There are also many places to sit, as well as cafe on one of the upper floors. Overall, a great place to visit, especially because it's free! No ticket reservation required.

I love Tate, I’m a Tate member and I feel it is worth it as I get to see everything and don’t need to book ahead. I realise this is a bit of a difficult one to do, although they could manage volumes sometimes. Some of the exhibitions were packed and was really difficult to have a pleasant experience allowing free movement or respect of personal space 😅

Visited during a very wet London Thursday afternoon and only looked at the free galleries. The entry area resembled an aircraft hanger which was an interesting start, the staff were all extremely friendly, polite and helpful. The exhibitions were all well displayed and easy to navigate. I guess everyone's take on them are down to personal choice in my own opinion they were mostly thought provoking, some much more than others, there was nothing there that blew me away but as I say that's just my thoughts. Visited the cafe area the cakes were tasty although rather overpriced and the latte one of the best I've had in ages, well done. Overall worth a visit, will try the Tate Britain next to see how it compares.

One of my favourite places in London. If you like contemporary art - Tate Modern always has different exhibitions and open every day (even on Mondays when most galleries closed) If you plan your visit during a short trip or vacation in London I would recommend to book tickets in advance. Great option to subscribe and get National Art Pass in advance - with this pass you get 50% off for paid exhibitions.

An incredible museum focusing on modern art. It is Britain's national gallery of international modern art and it’s totally worth it spending several hours exploring the exhibitions. Unlike other major museums, And similar to the other modern-art-oriented ones in world, there temporary exhibitions and galleries change constantly so it’s a good idea to visit Tate Modern once in a while.

Visited Tate Modern today for 1st time this year! I'm so happy to be back! Although it is not the same and it is one way on the Collection Route, it is still quite flexible and there is lots to see 🙂 we skipped going to the new building cause we got tired, but the stuff we saw before was worth it, it wasn't too crowded and it was interesting overall. Still one of the best places to visit!

A very beautiful modern arts museum, home to some impressive well-known and not-so well-known works of art. The staff was very kind, the food and drinks were great, and the gift shop had all we were expecting to find. A must-visit if you are going to London even for a few days.

Definitely a great place to visit, various art collections to look at. But bare in mind during COVID-19 and to accomplish social distancing, it is recommended that you book your ticket in advance online before your trip to Tate Modern(Particularly the Andy Warhol exhibition). The Andy Warhol collection was my overall favorite during the season. It is definitely worth a visit for all those who are visiting London or just exploring the Southbank.

Tate Modern is a modern art gallery located in London. It is Britain's national gallery of international modern art and forms part of the Tate group (together with Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, Tate St Ives and Tate Online). It is based in the former Bankside Power Station, in the Bankside area of the London Borough of Southwark. Tate holds the national collection of British art from 1900 to the present day and international modern and contemporary art.Tate Modern is one of the largest museums of modern and contemporary art in the world. As with the UK's other national galleries and museums, there is no admission charge for access to the collection displays, which take up the majority of the gallery space, while tickets must be purchased for the major temporary exhibitions. The gallery is a highly visited museum, with 5.9 million visitors in 2018, making it the sixth-most visited art museum in the world, and the most visited in Britain. Tate Modern is housed in the former Bankside Power Station, which was originally designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the architect of Battersea Power Station, and built in two stages between 1947 and 1963. It is directly across the river from St Paul's Cathedral. The power station closed in 1981. Prior to redevelopment, the power station was a 200 m (660 ft) long, steel framed, brick clad building with a substantial central chimney standing 99 m (325 ft). The structure was roughly divided into three main areas each running east–west – the huge main Turbine Hall in the centre, with the boiler house to the north and the switch house to the south. Initial redevelopment For many years after closure Bankside Power station was at risk of being demolished by developers. Many people campaigned for the building to be saved and put forward suggestions for possible new uses. An application to list the building was refused. In April 1994 the Tate Gallery announced that Bankside would be the home for the new Tate Modern. In July of the same year, an international competition was launched to select an architect for the new gallery. Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron of Herzog & de Meuron were announced as the winning architects in January 1995. The £134 million conversion to the Tate Modern started in June 1995 and completed in January 2000. The most obvious external change was the two-story glass extension on one half of the roof. Much of the original internal structure remained, including the cavernous main turbine hall, which retained the overhead travelling crane. An electrical substation, taking up the Switch House in the southern third of the building, remained on-site and owned by the French power company EDF Energy while Tate took over the northern Boiler House for Tate Modern's main exhibition spaces. The history of the site as well as information about the conversion was the basis for a 2008 documentary Architects Herzog and de Meuron: Alchemy of Building & Tate Modern. This challenging conversion work was carried by Carillion. Opening and initial reception Tate Modern was opened by the Queen on 11 May 2000. Tate Modern received 5.25 million visitors in its first year. The previous year the three existing Tate galleries had received 2.5 million visitors combined.

This is of the greatest art museum in London because they have everything you want to see in the comic strip art work , simple art work and complicated art work. The place is clean , spacious, tidy , modern , sleek , colourful , big and unique place that will always inspire people to be more creative with their artwork such as Henri Matisse with his square snail and Vincent Van Gogh art work which has deeper meaning. The staff are friendly , responsive , respectful , attentive, knowledgeable , informative , kind , joyous , confident and understanding people who are always there to help you. I have been there long time and make me realise people need to have deeper appreciation for art work because they may have a meaning such as with the snail squares picture to show that you can be creative with any shapes to make any animals and insects which can stand out from other art works. Go there because you will enjoy every art work and try to figure out the meaning but if you don’t then you will regret it until you go there to see it yourself in real person. The snail art work is colourful , interesting , modern , sleek , inspiring , creative and vibrant which is good to see if you are looking for inspiration. If you are tourist who arrived to United Kingdom then this place that you need to go , so you can see art work before you go back to your home country.

I'm just not a fan of modern art and brutalism. The museum seems very cold and empty, takes forever to get to any of the exhibitions and it's just doesn't have the right vibe for me.

  • 3/5 Ben M. 3 years ago on Google
So I'm in two minds about the Tate currently. They offer great free galleries. However, the paid exhibitions are pretty expensive and unaccessible if you're a family. I also can't stand behind them after how they treated their staff during the COVID pandemic.

Free collections are plentiful with a good variety to reflect on. Some of the stuff might be a bit advanced for a non-art professional, things can get a bit too abstract. But very accessible with plenty of bathrooms on each floor too! Be sure to go to the cafe for some refreshing cool water and some tasteful tea/coffee!

  • 4/5 Honor S. 2 years ago on Google
Some fantastic displays with interesting and important stories. Took us about an hour to go around a single floor. We went on a Saturday afternoon and it was very busy but manageable. Borough Market is nearby so would recommend combining your visit with a spot of lunch there.

  • 5/5 Kristyna K. 2 years ago on Google
I visited the Rodin exhibition. Nicely laid out (very much like British Museum a couple of years ago) and always there is a great feeling of space. With covid restrictions entering and exiting is more complicated than a Maze - which even the staff found amusing. So be prepared for a hike round the Tate until restrictions are eased.

Strange cross between a museum and a country house. Lots of porcelain on display and would have been good to have more information about it. The grounds are lovely with great views towards the Chilterns. Lots of lovely planting as well

Vast space. The cafe on the ground floor is good for quick break. The galleries are well curated and have great viewing space. Portable seats are available if one wishes to view artwork for long or sketch.

  • 5/5 Jian C. 2 years ago on Google
Yup, you read that right! It's FREE to all! All you have to do is get the free tickets online through their website (no purchase required of any kind) and you gain access to the Tate. Be aware that this place is ginormous! But it's totally worth it. If you're an art enthusiast, then please come to this place. You will not be disappointed. You will probably need more than 2 days to be able to see all the artwork. There's also a picnic spot right in front of the building in a grass area.

Always love visiting Tate Modern. We went and had coffee and cake, then spent the day looking at art and london from the viewing platform. The free exhibitions were more than enough for the day, as well as the amount of time we could spend in the gift shop. I am looking forward to coming back again and going to some of the other exhibitions

Attended the Yayoi Kusama exhibition which lasted half an hour. Then decided to look at other types of art inside the rest of the building. Thankful to be able to pray in the multi faith room. Thanks Tate Modern

Loved visiting for the Infinity mirror rooms, stopped for a quick lunch too, had a nice sandwich and the coffee was great. There were lots of really cool bits of art dotted about but of course the infinity mirror rooms were the highlight it was just stunning. They allowed only 4 people into the infinity mirror room at a time which was great. It really allowed you to enjoy and take it in without a crowd in a small space. We went early in a weekday so the wait wasn’t long at all, but I can imagine on a busier day the line would be longer. I would still recommend going because we loved it and the photos we got were gorgeous. Because they only allow a few in at a time means when it’s your turn you really get to appreciate it.

This is a must-visit place in London. Located on the banks of Thames, just next to the Millenium Bridge. Wonderful experience. Apart from the art work inside, a bonus are the AI air balloons or whatever they are at the entrance. They look like aliens hovering above you. It's just all very lovely at Tate Modern. And it's free entry as well.

  • 5/5 Kim D. 2 years ago on Google
Art should be free and accessible and the Tate hits the nail on the head. A suggested £5 donation is more than reasonable for everything you can go and absorb there. Free cloakroom too, and plenty of loos. Could happily spend a whole day in this place. A must visit for anyone with time in London.

Well tate modern has given me hope. Yes I can be a artist. Becuase my work shop floor looks like so many of the works of art hanging here. I must admit though. The building is beautiful! The food is nice and the staff are friendly. Don't get me wrong there are some amazing things here but I guess my definition of art is different from some other peoples.

  • 5/5 Tom B. 2 years ago on Google
A visit to London isn't complete without a trip to Tate Modern. Tate Modern is Britain's national museum of modern and contemporary art from around the globe, and the world’s most visited contemporary art gallery. Housed in the former Bankside Power Station on the banks of the Thames, the awe-inspiring Turbine Hall is the dramatic setting for new art commissions. The collection is free to visit and you can see great works of art from: Louise Bourgeois, Yayoi Kusama, Henri Matisse, Cornelia Parker, Pablo Picasso, and Mark Rothko – to name a few

A very impressive and large museum. I would definitely recommend setting aside at least 4 hours. I am not a big museum goer but I found the exhibits to be fascinating and quite accessible even to myself. The notes and stories give you a glimpse behind the pieces that would otherwise be lost on me and therefore the pieces become so much more beautiful. My personal favorite place here was the white room.

  • 4/5 Gigi E. 2 years ago on Google
The Tate modern is a must for a lot of tourists. Given that modern art doesn't appeal to everyone I will add only what is relevant to the experience... The building itself is a wonder in terms of space and how well it has been used. Unlike other museums in London you don't get the sense of getting lost in a maze...here is a logic in the placement of the rooms and the collections. My only concern was the lighting in some of the exhibition rooms.

Always a pleasure to visit this institution. It's easy to get to, and there is plenty to keep you occupied once there. Well sign posted and lots of staff on hand to support you. Some nice places to rest and areas to grab a coffee both inside and in the surrounding area.

my first time going the Tate and I loved it. I missed the opportunity to go with school as a child. Primarily went for the Kusama: Infinity mirror rooms which was great, did only get a couple of minutes in each one however. The free exhibit was lovely, all different styles of contemporary feels.

Always a good place to visit. Changing modern art displays, special shows, the regular collection is rotated and rearranged regularly. The gift shops are fantastic for presents for others and yourself. Amazing views across London from the various balconies. Especially from the 10th floor. There is something for everyone. The display in the turbine hall is always a highlight. Most is free. But book ahead for special exhibitions/shows as they can be already booked out on weekends

I love this museum! You need several days to view the museum. My advice is just to pick one section read about it then tackle it. The collection they own is huge, some artwork is really impressive other just makes you question the point of art. But definitely go check it out

A great selection of modern art. Beautiful architecture. Easy to get in compared to all other museums even during a crowded holiday season. If you get hungry try the restaurant upstairs. I was not expecting this amazing view and delicious food.

  • 5/5 Crabson 3 months ago on Google New
Even the free collection gives you a chance to see many interesting art pieces. Also, I've never seen such monumental art exhibits displayed inside a gallery. During my visit there were exhibits with nudity, so it's better to supervise your children. The giant building of the gallery is impressive by itself inside and outside. On the bottom levels, where storage tanks used to be, you can still catch a whiff of generator oil that has been stored there.

Tate Is safe place to spend time surrounded by art and interesting people. You can go for free for regular house exhibitions or get in advance if you want to do enjoy the special ones such as Kusama. Nice coffee shops to do a break while visiting the many rooms there.
